Modi, Putin set to sign energy deals ahead of BRICS

Posted:

BENAULIM (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are set to seal energy and defence deals today (Saturday) that officials say are signs of a deepening partnership between the nations.Putin will hold talks with Modi after arriving in the Indian tourism state of Goa for a BRICS summit also involving the heads of leading emerging nations Brazil, China and South Africa.Among the agreements expected to be signed between the two leaders are Moscows delivery of its most advanced anti-aircraft defence system to India.India, the worlds top defence importer, is undergoing a $100-billion upgrade of its Soviet-era military hardware, as it looks to protect its borders from arch-rival Pakistan and an increasingly assertive China.Modi and Putin will also focus on strengthening energy ties to meet Indias growing thirst for fuel and electricity for its fast-growing economy.Russias biggest oil company Rosneft is expected to acquire Indias Essar Oil in a multi-billion-dollar deal, according to local media reports, quoting officials involved in the agreement. The menu is vast, Indias ambassador to Russia, Pankaj Saran said at a briefing on the talks, without detailing the deals to be signed. It is more than a relationship, it is a partnership and very justifiably it has been described by the two leaders as both special and privileged, as well as of course strategic, he said.It is very deep and very intense and it is poised to grow even further.Saran said he also expected them to discuss Indias tensions with neighbour Pakistan, which spiked after last months attack on an Indian army base that killed 19 soldiers.Modi has sought to isolate Pakistan internationally since the attack that India blamed on Pakistan-based militants.India said it subsequently carried out strikes against militants over the border in Pakistan, prompting a furious response from Islamabad. We have conveyed our views to the Russian side. We are confident that Russia will reflect upon our concerns, Saran said. But Putin is seen as unlikely to weigh into the dispute between the rivals, as Moscow also eyes closer defence ties with Islamabad. Russia and Pakistan carried out their first joint military exercise last month. In beachside Goa, the two leaders will reach agreement on Moscows delivery of the S-400 Triumph defence system, Russian news agencies quoted a Putin aide as saying on Friday, without detailing a timeframe. The S-400 is Russias most modern air defence system and has been deployed to Syria, where Moscow is conducting a bombing campaign in support of President Bashar al-Assad, its long-time ally.India was the erstwhile Soviet Unions closest military ally during the Cold War and a major importer of its military hardware. But in recent years Delhi has turned to the United States for supplies, as the two nations forge stronger ties.Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with other BRICS leaders including Chinas President Xi Jinping late Saturday, before hosting a dinner in their honour to officially start the BRICS summit. The BRICS leaders will get down to talks on Sunday, with enhancing trade ties along with regional and global terrorism issues that are expected to be on the agenda.BRICS was formed in 2011 with the aim of using its growing economic and political influence to challenge Western hegemony.

Motorcycling: Champion Lorenzo sets pace in Japan

MOTEGI (AFP) - World champion Jorge Lorenzo lapped fastest in practice on a crash-filled Friday ahead of this weekends Japanese MotoGP Grand Prix as Dani Pedrosa fractured his collarbone in a nasty spill.Championship leader Marc Marquez was fourth quickest for Honda but much of the focus was on Pedrosa, who decided to fly back to Spain for surgery after a heavy fall in Fridays afternoon session that broke his collarbone into four pieces.Yamahas Lorenzo clocked 1min 45.151sec in cool and dry conditions at Motegi, followed by Ducatis Andrea Dovizioso, who lapped 0.053sec slower with rising Suzuki star Maverick Vinales third. The bike is working quite well and Im in good shape, so Im very motivated to make it a good race, Lorenzo said.Marquez suffered a minor fall in the afternoon as he tested the limit of the hard front tyre at the hairpin but was still good enough for fourth, while his closest championship rival Valentino Rossi was seventh. We are very close, said Spains double world champion. At the moment Lorenzo is the fastest guy. But me, Vinales, Valentino, Dovizioso -- we more or less have the same pace. The hard tyre also caused troubles for Rossi, as temperature quickly dropped in the afternoon in mountainous Motegi, sending several riders to crash. It was a mixed day. This afternoon it was difficult practice because we tried the hard tyre, said the Italian.Along with Pedrosa, Aspars Eugene Laverty also wiped out at turn six. Both men managed to walk to the circuits medical centre. Laverty decided to seek further tests at a local hospital, while Honda decided to send Pedrosa home. He will be replaced by test rider Hiroshi Aoyama, team officials said.I was on the out-lap of my last run in (afternoon practice) when I momentarily lost the rear entering turn 11, and when the tyre found grip again it launched me in the air, Pedrosa, who is set to undergo surgery in Barcelona on Saturday, said in a statement.Marquez, meanwhile, can mathematically claim his third MotoGP title in Japan on Sunday. With four races to go, Rossi is battling to close a 52-point gap against Marquez, who has never won at the Motegi circuit but his second-place finish in 2014 secured that seasons championship.Sundays race kicks off three weekends of successive races in an Asian triple-header, which also takes the riders to Australia and Malaysia, before the season finale in Spain after a topsy-turvy season that has yielded eight different grand prix winners so far.

US bans recalled Samsung Note 7 phones from airplanes

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US officials Friday banned all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smart phones from airplanes, saying anyone attempting to travel with the recalled handsets may face fines and have the devices confiscated. The South Korean electronics giant has recalled all Note 7 phones, including replacements, following reports of exploding batteries and fires, which have led to numerous injuries. Samsung has also stopped producing the flagship handset. But it remained unclear how many consumers have continued using the phones despite the recall and warnings from safety officials to stop using them.US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said an emergency order banning the devices would take effect at 1600 GMT Saturday.Passengers will be barred from carrying the Note 7 on planes, in hand luggage or in checked baggage on domestic flights and international flights to or from the United States, the agency said.We recognize that banning these phones from airlines will inconvenience some passengers, but the safety of all those aboard an aircraft must take priority, Foxx said in a statement. We are taking this additional step because even one fire incident inflight poses a high risk of severe personal injury and puts many lives at risk. The Consumer Product Safety Commission this week formalized the recall affecting 1.9 million handsets in the United States, including one million announced in a September 15 recall and an additional 900,000 replacements. The agency said Samsung had received reports of at least 96 of the US handsets overheating, with 13 reports of burn injuries and 47 incidents of property damage.Samsung has offered refunds or replacement devices, and is giving those customers who want to exchange the Note 7 for another Samsung device an extra $100 credit.

Medical delivery drones take flight over Rwanda

Posted:

MUHANGA (AFP) - Three, two, one, launch And with that, catapulted from a ramp, the small fixed-wing drone buzzes into the air towards its pre-programmed destination, the Kabgayi hospital two kilometres away.On Friday Rwanda inaugurated a drone operation that its backers hope will kickstart a revolution in the supply of medical care in rural parts of Africa, in the first instance by delivering batches of blood to 21 clinics in the west of the country.Maternal mortality rates in Africa are among the highest in the world, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), largely due to postpartum haemorrhage caused by lack of access to simple blood transfusions.Rwanda is no exception, and the situation here is worsened by the topography of a country dubbed the land of a thousand hills as well as intense seasonal rains making the transport of blood by road often long and difficult.Blood is a very precious commodity so you cannot just stock a lot of it in every single heath centre, said Keller Rinaudo, CEO of Zipline, a California-based robotics company that designed the 15 drones and the base housing them in Muhanga, 50 kilometres (31 miles) west of the capital Kigali.Rinaudo hopes his drone delivery system will allow the Rwandan government to instantly deliver life-saving transfusions to any citizen in the country in 15 to 30 minutes.US package-delivery giant UPS and global vaccine alliance Gavi have invested $1.1 million (one million euros) in the Zipline project, one of a handful on the continent seeking to harness the potential of delivery drones to overcome poor infrastructure. For the Rwandan government blood delivery by drone is not cheaper, but it promises to be much faster. The drones dubbed Zips are shaped like a fat-bellied miniature plane with a two-metre (six-foot) wingspan. They are battery-powered with a range of around 150 kilometres, weigh 13 kilos (29 pounds) and can carry a cargo of about 1.5 kilos, or three bags of blood. Flying at up to 70 kilometres per hour, it is predicted each drone could make as many as 150 deliveries a day.At the tent that serves as a launch station, Zipline technicians monitor the drones from laptops while others prepare the payload: small cardboard boxes with paper parachutes that will hold the transfusion blood and be dropped from a height of around 20 metres. As the test flights were carried out curious residents peered through the fence, watching as the drones were flung into the air, returning after dropping their cargo at the hospital, and landing on an inflatable mattress.Zipline plans to open a second base in Rwanda next year meaning the whole of the tiny country will be within range. These flights will save lives, said Gregg Svingen, head of communications at UPS. Today it is blood, tomorrow it will be vaccines.

Antonio Conte not worried about his future at Chelsea

Posted:

COBHAM, United Kingdom (AFP) - Antonio Conte insists he has no reason to fear for his future at Chelsea after bookmakers suspended betting on the Italian being sacked.Conte has only been in charge at Stamford Bridge since July, but he had to answer questions about his job security on Friday following heavy betting on his imminent dismissal 24 hours earlier.Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is notorious for acting quickly when he feels a manager is underachieving and last season he sacked Jose Mourinho eight months after his team won the Premier League. But, although Chelsea have endured some difficult moments in the early stages of Contes reign, including consecutive lacklustre defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal, it would be a bizarre move to axe the Italian after only nine games.Chelsea have made it clear they have no intention of wielding the axe and Conte was relaxed when quizzed ahead of Saturdays Premier League clash with champions Leicester.I take this with a smile. Im trying to find who bet the money Conte told reporters at Chelseas training ground.I have good communication and a good relationship with the club. Its very difficult to talk about this situation. Im focused about my work. Im focused to improve the team. After spending the majority of his managerial career with Italian clubs, whose owners are famous for hiring and firing with remarkable regularity, Conte isnt fazed by his first taste of Englands version of the sack race. The pressure is the same. Its normal to be under pressure, also for the players, he said. When you are in a club you want to win and do good work. The pressure is part of our job. Its the same in other countries. We are working very hard to change the situation of the past, the whole of the last season. We are trying to bring something important for the present and the future. While he remains confident about his future with Chelsea, after failing his first two big tests against Liverpool and Arsenal, Conte can ill-afford to finish the next two matches without positive results.Home games against Leicester and Manchester United will provide further evidence of how far Chelsea have come under Conte, who said: These are two big challenges.Leicester won the title last season and are playing a good Champions League. Then with Manchester United they are another great team, but in this moment we must think about ourselves and not the other team.Contes major problem so far has been a shaky defence that had leaked goals at an alarming rate. The former Juventus coach responded by switching to a formation with three central defenders and the result was a 2-0 win at Hull in their last game before the international break.Conte will stick with that formation against Leicester, but he has to decide whether to keep faith with David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta or recall captain John Terry after he recovered from an ankle injuryYes, John is available, he came back for training in the middle of the week and did all the sessions, Conte said.It was necessary to find a solution because it is not right for a great team like Chelsea to concede so many goals in those games. Now I have four central defenders and one must go on the bench.Conte also needs to get the best out of Eden Hazard, the mecurial Belgium midfielder who this week expressed a desire to be used by Chelsea in the number 10 role he enjoys with his country.Showing no signs of bowing to Hazards wishes, Conte said: Now we are finding the best solution for the players and their talent. In the last game against Hull we played a good game. Hazard and Costa played very well and did what I want. Now we must continue this way.

Aubameyang rescues Dortmund in Hertha draw

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a penalty and hit the bar before scoring to earn Borussia Dortmund a 1-1 home draw against Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga on Friday as both sides ended with 10 men.Valentin Stocker gave the visitors a 51st-minute lead with a calm finish before Aubameyang made up for his saved penalty when he converted at the back post with 10 minutes to go.Both sides ended the game a player down as Dortmunds Emre Mor was sent off for a second yellow card on 84 minutes before Valentin Stockers savage tackle in midfield resulted in a straight red in the final minute. The result means Hertha remain second on 14 points and Dortmund third on 13, giving leaders Bayern Munich, on 16, a chance to climb further clear at the top at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.Hertha were possibly the better side on the night but an injury-depleted Dortmund stopped the in-form capital outfit from drawing level with Bayern at the top.It also set a new club record for Dortmund as they have now gone 25 home games without defeat and they achieved this without the services of Andre Schuerrle, Gonzalo Castro, Sven Bender, Erik Durm, Sokratis, Raphael Guerreiro, and Lukasz Piszczek. After Stockers opener early in the second half, Dortmund, with six players under 22 in the side, dug deep for an equaliser that had home fans rejoicing.Aubameyang had earlier seen an attempted lob tipped onto the crossbar by Rune Jarstein, who then denied the Gabonese striker with a brilliant penalty stop, but the Norwegian goalkeeper was eventually beaten.Bayern dropped their first league points of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Cologne a fortnight ago, four days after their Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid.Carlo Ancelottis side now need a convincing display ahead of next Wednesdays European clash at home to PSV Eindhoven, while Dortmund travel to Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

Joe Biden: 'We're Sending a Message' to Putin

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Vice President Joe Biden dismissed suggestions that the White House has failed to respond to Russian meddling in the US election, saying Vladimir Putin will get the message. In an interview excerpt released Friday, Biden paused and gave a wry smile when asked why the US has not acted a week after US officials formally accused the Russian government Friday of trying to interfere with the 2016 White House race. Were sending a message, Biden said, smiling and nodding his head gently. We have the capacity to do it and the message will be sent. Hell know it and it will be at the time of our choosing and under the circumstances that have the greatest impact.Asked whether the public will know, Biden responded tersely: I hope not.Officials have in the past said any cyber attacks on important US institutions would prompt a response, which could take the form of diplomatic or economic sanctions, or possibly cyber measures.A joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence was the first official accusation by Washington against Moscow in a spate of email hacks.

Pro-govt gains in Aleppo ahead of key Syria talks

Posted:

ALEPPO (AFP) - Syrian pro-government forces used intense air strikes as cover for an advance in the battleground city of Aleppo on Friday, ahead of fresh diplomatic efforts to end the countrys intractable conflict. The United States and Russia, which support opposite sides in the five-year war, will meet in Switzerland on Saturday to try to resurrect the peace process.Moscow has faced rising international criticism over its backing for President Bashar al-Assads onslaught in divided Aleppo, including Western accusations of possible war crimes.Violence has continued unabated in the northern city, once Syrias commercial hub but now ravaged by Russian and regime air strikes in support of a major government offensive against rebels. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitor, said Russian and Syrian warplanes pounded opposition-controlled eastern districts again on Friday, though it did not have any immediate information on casualties. It said pro-government forces had used the air raids to advance southwards from positions in north Aleppo with the goal of opening a route to the airport, east of the city. The intensified bombardment has put a severe strain on rescue workers and medical staff in east Aleppo, home to an estimated 250,000 residents under siege. This recent escalation has been huge and weve had a lot of work, said Ibrahim Abu al-Leith, a spokesman for the White Helmets rescue force in Aleppo. He said rescuers were still working to dislodge people from under the rubble in the Tariq al-Bab eastern district. AFPs correspondent in east Aleppo said some people had been stuck under the rubble for at least two days as rescuers scrambled between neighbourhoods. Some people trapped under collapsed buildings bled to death after White Helmets teams were unable to reach them in time.Since the collapse last month of a truce brokered by Washington and Moscow, Aleppo has been engulfed by some of the worst violence of the conflict. More than 370 people, including nearly 70 children, have been killed in regime and Russian bombardment of east Aleppo since the regimes assault began on September 22, the Observatory said.Dozens of civilians, including children, have also died in rebel bombardment of regime-controlled western districts, according to the monitor, which compiles its information from sources on the ground. The Observatory said at least 15 civilians, including two children, were killed Friday in air raids on a village in northeastern Raqa province, presumably by the US-led coalition currently battling the Islamic State jihadist group in Syria and Iraq. US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are expected to hold fresh talks to try to revive the ceasefire deal in Lausanne on Saturday.UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura will attend, along with the chief diplomats from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar -- all backers of Syrian opposition forces. Iran announced late Friday that its foreign minister Mohammad Javid Zarif would take part in the Lausanne talks. Then in London on Sunday, Kerry will likely meet up with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany.Lavrov played down hopes of a breakthrough in Lausanne, telling reporters on Friday he had no special expectations for progress. In an interview with Russias Komsomolskaya Pravda tabloid published Friday, Assad said he would use a victory in Aleppo as a springboard to capture other rebel strongholds. Its going to be the springboard, as a big city, to move to another areas, to liberate another areas from the terrorists, the Syrian president said. He said his next target could be northwestern Idlib province.Idlib is held by an alliance of rebels and jihadists including the Fateh al-Sham Front, which changed its name from Al-Nusra Front when it cut ties with Al-Qaeda. You have to keep cleaning this area and to push the terrorists to Turkey to go back to where they come from, or to kill them. Theres no other option, Assad said. Also Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a law ratifying a deal with Syria -- first signed in August 2015 -- to establish Russias Hmeimim airbase to launch pro-regime operations. Russia has long provided political and financial support to Syria and began its bombing campaign there in September 2015.Moscow offered Thursday to ensure the safe withdrawal of rebel groups and civilians from eastern Aleppo. There was no immediate response from the rebels.Near Damascus, more than 1,200 people including rebel fighters and their families were bussed out of the towns of Qudsaya and al-Haamah Thursday under a local deal with the government.

US, at UN, urges action 'now' on Mideast conflict

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The United States on Friday called for immediate action to salvage the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the Security Council weighed its next steps to revive peace prospects.US Deputy Ambassador David Pressman told an informal council meeting on Israeli settlements that the continued building of Jewish outposts on Palestinian land was corrosive to the cause of peace. We need to start implementing the two-state solution on the ground right now, Pressman told the meeting organized by Angola, Egypt, Malaysia, Senegal and Venezuela. UN diplomats have kept one eye on the US presidential campaign as they consider whether to move on a Security Council resolution that could nudge the sides back to the negotiating table. The outcome of the US vote on November 8 could lead to a shift in relations between Washington and its close ally Israel.Pressman reiterated Washingtons long-standing view that a final peace agreement must be negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians. But significant progress toward creating a two-state reality can be made now that will help restore hope and lay the groundwork for successful negotiations, he added.Israel must decide between expanding settlements and preserving the possibility of a peaceful two-state solution.Arab governments are considering plans to present a draft resolution to the Security Council demanding a halt to Israel settlements, but a similar measure was vetoed by the United States in 2011.The United Nations has branded the settlements illegal, but the Security Council has not taken action to uphold that decision.Venezuelas Ambassador Rafael Ramirez accused the United States, which has veto powers, of maintaining a blockade at the Security Council and preventing action on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus government, settlement construction has surged with some 15,000 settlers moving into the West Bank over the past year alone.Lets call a spade a spade, said French Ambassador Francois Delattre. This policy is jeopardizing prospects for a future viable Palestinian state that would provide the best guarantee of Israels security and offer a just and durable solution to the conflict.France is offering to host an international conference to be held before the end of this year on relaunching the peace process.Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said Arab ministers are to meet later this month to decide whether to push for a draft resolution condemning Israeli settlements and also to press for full Palestinian membership in the United Nations.Palestine was granted the status of UN non-member observer state in 2012.

12 Egypt soldiers killed in Sinai attack: army

CAIRO (AFP) - An attack on an Egyptian military checkpoint killed 12 soldiers and wounded six others on Friday in the Sinai Peninsula where security forces are fighting jihadists, the army said. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack.Mortar rounds and rockets were fired at the army post, a police official and a medic told AFP.The army spokesman said in a statement that soldiers clashed with the assailants in the northern Sinai.Terrorist elements attacked a checkpoint in the northern Sinai. The clashes left 12 soldiers dead and wounded six others, the statement said.It said that 15 terrorists were killed. But the jihadist IS group, in a statement on the smartphone app Telegram, said its soldiers were safe and sound and had seized arms and ammunitions during the attack on the military checkpoint. The attack took place in the Bir al-Abd area west of El-Arish, the provincial capital of North Sinai, the officials said. The Egyptian affiliate of IS has claimed several attacks on security forces and foreigners in the Sinai in the past.Bir al-Abd has so far been largely spared the violence that has rocked northern Sinai over the past three years.Jihadists in Egypt have killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the military overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.They pledged allegiance to IS more than a year later, and their attacks have persisted despite a sweeping military campaign in the peninsula which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.Earlier this month, gunmen killed five Egyptian police conscripts in El-Arish.The jihadists claimed the bombing last year of a Russian airliner carrying tourists home from a Sinai resort. All 224 people on board were killed.

14 dead as pro-govt fighters squeeze IS in Libya's Sirte

SIRTE (AFP) - At least 14 pro-government fighters were killed on Friday in clashes with the Islamic State group in the jihadists former Libya bastion of Sirte, a medical source said. Fighting today began at 9am (0700 GMT) and the toll to now is 13 dead and 25-30 wounded, hospital official Abdellatif Abdel Ali said. One fighter, who was shot, later died after being operated upon.Ali said the majority of those killed were shot in the head by sniper fire. Forces allied with Libyas UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) have cornered IS fighters in Sirte, 450 kilometres (280 miles) east of Tripoli, since launching an offensive on May 12.After a pause in fighting on Thursday, pro-GNA fighters resumed the battle against IS holdouts in a seaside residential district of Sirte. At least three US air strikes hit IS positions on Friday, an AFP journalist in the city said.A pro-government forces commander told AFP that IS snipers were slowing the anti-jihadist advance. These gunmen are well trained and equipped. The havent given in even with air raids and the seige weve imposed on them, Al-Hedi Issa told AFP. So we prefer to advance slowly in order to preserve the lives of our fighters. The fighting has left more than 550 GNA fighters dead and 3,000 wounded. The IS death toll is not known.

Cristiano Ronaldo Confident of a 'Spectacular' Season Ahead

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Three-time World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo insists he will have a spectacular season despite a slow start to the campaign caused by knee ligament damage.Ronaldo was sidelined for two months by a sprained left knee ligament picked up during Portugals Euro 2016 final triumph over France, forcing him to miss Madrids first three games of the season. He has scored just once in four La Liga games since making his return, but netted five times in Portugals routs over Andorra and the Faroe Islands in the past week.I had a serious injury, I was out for two months. Now I am back and at the start I has less confidence, but bit-by-bit I am feeling better and more confident. I feel that I am back to what I was, Ronaldo told Madrid sports daily Marca on Friday. The season is very long and I am sure I am going to have another spectacular season.Ronaldo is expected to sign a bumper new contract with the European champions until 2021 in the coming days and reiterated his intention to retire in the Spanish capital after becoming the clubs all-time top goalscorer since joining from Manchester United in 2009.I didnt expect to be at Real Madrid for so long. I have already said that I want to retire here. It is the club in my heart. It gives me the opportunity to win individual and collective trophies. What I want most of all is to renew (my contract) with Real Madrid and continue here for many years to come.Despite bagging two Champions League titles and winning the Ballon dOr twice during his time with Real, Ronaldo has still only won one La Liga title in seven full seasons.Zinedine Zidanes men need to get back to winning ways at Real Betis on Saturday after three consecutive La Liga draws have seen them cede top spot to Atletico Madrid on goal difference. However, with still a two-point lead over champions Barcelona, Ronaldo is convinced Madrid can end a five-year wait to win La Liga.It is the competition in which we have to more consistent. It is an important trophy and hopefully this will be the year.Madrid cant go so many years without winning La Liga, but we are confident and motivated that we are going to win it.
