Saudi's first global bonds worth $17.5 bn: official media

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi Arabias first international bond offering totalled $17.5 billion and was nearly four times oversubscribed, official media said early Thursday, confirming the strong buyer interest which analysts expected. The total sum of the first offering was $17.5 billion, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The total subscription requests for these bonds amounted to $67 billion dollars (251.3 billion Saudi riyals). A source involved in the operation on Wednesday confirmed that the terms have been launched,, and Saudi has divided the total into three tranches with maturities of five, ten and thirty years, respectively, tailor-made for the American market. However, investor interest in the issue extends well beyond the United States, the source said. The Saudi issue will be bigger than many analysts had expected. It will be the largest ever from an emerging-market nation, Bloomberg News said.Saudi Arabia, the worlds largest oil exporter, projected a budget deficit of $87 billion this year after a fall in oil revenues, which still account for most of its income. To cover the shortfall, Saudi Arabia is re-orienting its economy by imposing unprecedented subsidy cuts and slowing government projects. In September it cut cabinet ministers salaries, among other measures. The kingdom last week began meetings with potential investors ahead of the bond issue.According to sources cited by Bloomberg News, it is pricing the five-year bonds to yield about 140 basis points over US Treasuries.Christopher Dembik, global head of macroeconomic research at Frances Saxo Bank, told AFP on Wednesday that the offer is going to arouse strong interest on the part of investors who are desperately looking for yield. The Saudi offer will be certainly slightly above that of its neighbours because of its less favourable sovereign debt rating and a recent global trend towards higher sovereign rates, he said.Saudi Arabia has already issued domestic bonds but that has led to a tightening of bank liquidity, according to Patrick Dennis, lead Middle East economist at Oxford Economics in London. So thats the main reason why theyre now borrowing overseas, he told AFP.Saudi banks loan-to-deposit ratio rose for the fifth consecutive month in August, reaching 90.8 percent, because of faster growth in credit relative to deposits, Riyadhs Jadwa Investment said in a report this month.Borrowing abroad also reduces the drain on the kingdoms foreign reserves, Dennis said.Official data show those reserves declined to $562 billion in August from $732 billion at the end of 2014.The reserves remain very large but their rapid drawdown shows a need for diversified funding, Dennis said.London-based Capital Economics said in a briefing paper that Saudi reserves are now unlikely to fall much beyond their current level in the coming years because the bond issue will finance around a third of next years budget deficit and almost all of the current account shortfall. In April the kingdom released its wide-ranging Vision 2030 for diversifying the economy. At its heart is a plan to float less than five percent of state oil company Saudi Aramco on the stock market. The proceeds would help form what will become the worlds biggest state investment fund, with around $2 trillion in assets. With prospects good for the current international bond issue, Dembik foresees Saudi Arabia borrowing $15 billion to $20 billion annually in the market to help finance its economic transformation plan.

Pakistan wary of dangerous West Indies

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Pakistan can ill-afford any complacency against a dangerous West Indies side when the two teams meet in the second Test starting in Abu Dhabi from Friday.Normal service will be resumed with a traditional red ball and daylight play after both teams fought out a tension-packed pink ball day-night Test in Dubai, won by Pakistan by a narrow 56-run margin.Pakistan dominated the first three days after scoring 579-3 declared, courtesy of opener Azhar Alis epic career best 302 not out, and then dismissing West Indies for 357.But leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo turned the match upside down with career best figures of 8-49 to wreck Pakistan for a paltry 123 in their second innings, giving West Indies a target of 346 to win.Darren Bravo batted out of his skin and when the last session started West Indies needed 114 runs in a possible of 38 overs with Bravo unbeaten on 102 and ready to launch an assault in the final hour.It needed a leaping catch by leg-spinner Yasir Shah to dismiss Bravo for 116 and 26 runs later Pakistan wrapped up the match to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. It will be tough. With the kind of confidence the West Indian batsmen have got, it will be difficult to get them out in the second Test, said Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq.I think both teams are used to the red ball and have more idea of it -- batsmen and bowlers know how the red ball behaves -- spinners and fast bowlers will get more help and there will be reverse swing. The pink ball -- used for the first time in the first-ever day-night Test between Australia and New Zealand at Adelaide last year -- did not help the bowlers in Dubai where excessive evening dew left it wet and soft.Misbah admitted his team missed experienced left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babab who was left out of the first Test.We did miss him, said Misbah. The pink ball used to be unplayable when we used it in domestic matches in Pakistan but here it didnt work like that. That hints Babar will replace one of the three seamers, likely Sohail Khan, while Babar Azam will make way for experienced batsman Younis Khan who missed the first Test due to his recovery from dengue fever.West Indies are likely to remain unchanged as captain Jason Holder takes positives from his teams fight in Dubai. There were a lot of positives from the first Test, so we need to keep that momentum and approach, said Holder. We gave two chances to Ali and paid the price for that so we have to take our chances, said Holder of the two dropped catches of Ali on 17 and 190.The third and final Test will be played in Sharjah from October 30-November 3.Teams (from): Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Azhar Ali, Sami Aslam, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Zulfiqar Babar, Rahat Ali, Sohail Khan, Imran Khan.West Indies: Jason Holder (captain), Kraigg Brathwaite, Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Carlos Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope, Leon Johnson, Alzarri Joseph, Marlon Samuels, Jomel Warrican.Umpires: Michael Gough (ENG) and Richard Illingworth (ENG).Tv umpire: Paul Reiffel (AUS).Match referee: Jeff Corwe (NZL).

Tennis: Kuznetsova into last eight, keeps Singapore hopes alive

MOSCOW (AFP) - Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova cruised into the quarter-finals of the Kremlin Cup on Wednesday with a straight-sets win over Alize Cornet to keep her hopes alive of making the WTA Finals. The two-time Grand Slam title winner, ranked ninth in the world, won 6-4, 7-5 in one hour 45 minutes.Russian veteran Kuznetsova needs to win the Moscow title if she is to make the elite eight-woman field at next weeks season finale in Singapore. If she fails, then Britains Johanna Konta will take the final spot.I was battling with myself throughout the match, Kuznetsova said.I played my normal tennis from the start but after earning the lead I began to perform feebly for no reason. I was going up and down throughout the entire match. In the last eight, Kuznetsova will meet ninth seed Timea Babos of Hungary, who saw off another Frenchwoman, Kristina Mladenovic 6-1, 6-4.The hopes of third seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of reaching the WTA finals were ended after a wrist injury forced her to retire from her second-round match with Daria Gavrilova of Australia.Suarez Navarro started with an immediate break but Moscow-born Gavrilova rallied to take the opening set 6-4 in 49 minutes. Gavrilova led 3-0 in the second when Suarez Navarro decided to withdraw.I think I played pretty well today, Gavrilova said. I lost my serve in the very beginning but I felt like I was still in it. I managed to find the momentum, I had a lot of chances and finally it all worked out.Gavrilova will next face seventh seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the 2014 title winner, who ousted 2008 Kremlin Cup champion Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-1, 6-4.In the ATP event, second seeded Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas made the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 win over local favourite, Evgeny Donskoy.

Cricket: McCullum won't forgive Cairns over fixing saga

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said Thursday he will never forgive Chris Cairns after his ex-teammate set out to destroy his credibility over match-fixing allegations.McCullum was the prosecution star witness in Cairns perjury trial, which ended with the allrounder acquitted of all charges in a London court late last year.McCullum said he felt a moral obligation to testify about claims Cairns approached him with a business proposition about match-fixing in 2008.But the former batsman, who retired earlier this year, said it was his character that came under fire.I felt that I was the one on trial and I found that really hard to deal with, he told Radio New Zealand, saying he blamed his one-time idol Cairns. He added: Im a very forgiving person. I dont keep a lot of grudges... the last thing I wanted to see was one of my former teammates rotting away in jail and Im actually pleased hes not.But I cant forgive the other behaviour, the way... (he) effectively lobbied to put me in the gun publicly and heap a lot of pressure on. Hence I want nothing more to do with him.Explaining the long delay between Cairns alleged approach in 2008 and when he reported it to authorities in 2011, McCullum said: I did not want to rat on a mate. The 35-year-old also criticised the International Cricket Councils handling of his case after he was interviewed multiple times and his evidence was leaked to the media.I felt it was incredibly unprofessional, the way it was dealt with, he said.If were serious about combating corruption within our sport then we need to ensure that when evidence is presented by a player or administrator or whoever, that they are protected. The ICC in June said they since improved their procedures for handling evidence of match-fixing.McCullum, who is promoting a new autobiography, told TVNZ he never wanted to see Cairns again.Im sure hell get on with his life, and Ill get on with mine, and lets hope they never cross paths, he said.Im done with it now and I want to move on with the rest of my life and I sure as hell hope that my career is not defined by my involvement with Chris Cairns.

Football: Bayern thump Eindhoven to break winless streak

Posted:

MUNICH (AFP) - Bayern Munich broke their three-game winless streak with an emphatic 4-1 win at home to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday in the Champions League with winger Arjen Robben outstanding. Thomas Mueller and Joshua Kimmich put Bayern ahead at the Allianz Arena before Luciano Narsingh netted for Eindhoven before the break, but Robert Lewandowski made it 3-1 on the hour mark.Robben, who created two goals, capped an eye-catching display with a fourth goal as Bayern got their Group D campaign back on track after their 1-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid three weeks ago.We started well and created good chances to go 2-0, we werent that dominant and we had to be careful at the back. They showed what they can do on the counter, said Robben. We dominated in the second and deserved the high win. After talk from the German media of a mini-crisis, following three games without a win in all competitions, this was the result and performance Bayern needed. But the German league leaders were aided and abetted by an Eindhoven defence which left acres of space to exploit, especially early on, allowing Bayern 28 shots on goal, while the Dutch managed only eight in reply.Robben, 32, scored his first header in the Champions League, but credited the goal to Thiago Alcantaras superb chip.It was nice to get the header, but it was down to the beatiful pass from Thiago, he deserves the credit, said Robben.Bayern remain second in Group D, three points behind leaders Atletico, who won 1-0 at Rostov, while Eindhoven are third with a single point.Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti had hinted at changes from the side which drew 2-2 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, a Bundesliga performance chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had branded unacceptable.Lewandowski was the only change to the starting line-up in a 4-3-3 formation as Mueller switched to the wing and Kingsley Coman dropping to the bench.Eindhoven coach Phillip Cocu made two changes from their 1-1 Dutch league draw with Heracles Almelo as Netherlands striker Narsingh and Mexico winger Andres Guardado returned.Bayern needed just 12 minutes to take the lead thanks to quick thinking from Mueller and Robben, who fired in a short pass from a corner.Eindhoven goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet parried Muellers shot, but the Germany international snapped up the rebound and slotted home off his right foot. Its my eighth season playing with Thomas, explained Robben.I often know what hes going to do, and we work on things like that in training and we used the chance well.Bayern exploited the space Eindhoven generously gave them at the back.David Alabas cross clipped a defender, but Kimmich tracked the looping ball to header over the line on 21 minutes for his seventh goal in eight games.Eindhoven then tightened their defence and started to attack.Uruguay winger Gaston Pereiro had the ball in the Munich net on their first meaningful attack on 39 minutes, but the goal was incorrectly ruled off side. The Dutch clawed one back two minutes later when Narsinghs superb shot from outside the area crashed in off the post to the annoyance of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to make it 2-1 at the break.Lewandowski fired wide in the first two minutes after the break, but only Neuers reflex save denied Pereiro at the other end.Just as PSV were gaining momentum, Bayern extended their lead.Robben beat two defenders before Zoet parried his shot before Lewandowski headed in the rebound on 59 minutes.Zoets saves, to deny Alaba and Mueller, kept the score respectable before Thiago Alcantaras chip saw Robben nudge the ball over the Eindhoven keeper on 84 minutes.

Football: Di Maria points the way for PSG

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Angel Di Marias first goal of the season set Paris Saint-Germain on their way to a 3-0 Champions League victory against an unlucky Basel side at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.Di Maria grabbed the opener late in the first half and Lucas doubled PSGs lead just after the hour mark before Edinson Cavanis late penalty sealed the victory as the French giants moved closer to qualifying for the last 16 from Group A.They remain level on seven points at the top of the group with Arsenal, who crushed Ludogorets 6-0 in London, with Basel and the Bulgarians both six points behind.A draw when they play Basel away in their next outing will likely secure their progress to the next round, and yet the outcome of this game could have been very different, with the Swiss side hitting the woodwork three times.Fortunately we had luck and Alphonse (Areola) on our side, and good posts as well, midfielder Adrien Rabiot told Canal Plus after the game. You need luck in these matches. But we controlled the game too and the main thing is that we won.The home side were without the injured Thiago Motta, and while the elegant Rabiot started in his place, they missed his ability to dictate the tempo of a game and keep possession. Indeed, a side that had appeared so accomplished in previous seasons under Laurent Blanc again looked a shadow of their former selves for much of this game. Paris have not yet convinced under Unai Emery and they could not afford to underestimate a Basel outfit utterly dominant in their domestic league and who have pulled off some impressive results in Europe. The visitors were the better team in the first half but missed several chances, first when Birkir Bjarnason kept alive a corner at the back post and Michael Lang headed against the bar. Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia then outmuscled Thiago Silva before releasing Renato Steffen, but Alphonse Areola came out to deny the winger before Doumbia fired over the loose ball. Di Maria did flash a volley just past after being teed up by Lucas on a quick breakaway but Basel hit the woodwork again in the 36th minute, this time from a Doumbia header after a Matias Delgado cross. Rabiot was denied by Tomas Vaclik seconds later but Paris were poor, and yet they went in front five minutes before the interval. Cavani tried to convert a low ball in by Blaise Matuidi but his touch turned into an assist for Di Maria, who finished emphatically. Cavani saw a header graze the near post on its way past as he connected with a Di Maria free-kick at the start of the second half. He then robbed Eder Balanta and bore down on goal but could not beat Vaclik. Instead, it was Lucas who made it 2-0 moments later, slotting low into the net after Basel failed to cut out a Serge Aurier centre. It was not Basels evening, and they hit the frame of the goal for the third time in the 66th minute. Marek Suchys header following a free-kick struck an upright and then rebounded off an unwitting Areola on the line.Cavani then added gloss to the scoreline by converting a stoppage-time penalty for his 17th goal this season for club and country after he had been fouled in the box.

Arsenal crush Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets 6-0

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez showed why their value to Arsenal is priceless as the peerless duo inspired a 6-0 thrashing of Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets in the Champions League on Wednesday.Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has urged Ozil and Sanchez not to get greedy after reports they both plan to demand Arsenal increase their wages to 250,000-per-week ($307,000, 279,000 euros) when contract talks are reopened later this month.Sanchez and Ozils current deals expire in 2018, but Arsenal want their prize assets to commit their long-term futures to the club and on the evidence of their swaggering displays at the Emirates Stadium, they should pay them whatever they want.Sanchez was the catalyst for Arsenals romp as the former Barcelona star netted his sixth goal of the season with a quite brilliant first half chip, while German midfielder Ozil smashed a second half hat-trick.Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were also on the scoresheet for rampant Arsenal, who are top of Champions League Group A after three matches and well on course for the last 16.Unbeaten in Europe this season, Arsenal have now won seven successive matches in all competitions.Making four changes from the team that beat Swansea on Saturday, Wenger called for his players to keep their foot on the gas after building some impressive momentum in recent weeks and the response was emphatic. After scoring twice against Swansea, Walcott had a golden opportunity to extend his hot streak when Sanchez picked him out unmarked inside the penalty area. With only Ludogorets goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov to beat, Walcott strangely opted for a cross and his scuffed delivery was easily cleared.Walcotts faux pas was never likely to derail Arsenal for long as they cut through the Ludogorets defence time and again before taking the lead in the 12th minute.Taking possession on the left edge of the Ludogorets penalty area after beating the Bulgarians attempted offside trap, Sanchez looked up and lofted a majestic chip that arched over Stoyanov before nestling into the far corner. While Arsenal were in prime form going forward, they were less convincing at the back and Wanderson threatened with a stinging drive that forced David Ospina into action.Breached again moments later, Arsenal were saved by Ospina, who raced off his line and barely got to the ball before colliding with Virgil Misidjan, who appealed in vain for a penalty.Ospina also had to be alert to block on the edge of the area before Wanderson fired against the woodwork from the rebound.Walcott misfired again when he blasted straight at Stoyanov from close-range, but he made amends in the 42nd minute.Given time to size up his shooting chances 25 yards from goal, Walcott punished Ludogorets slack marking with a superb shot that flashed past the slow-to-react Stoyanov. With their chances of taking even a point looking forlorn, Ludogorets faded in the second half and Oxlade-Chamberlain pounced on Kieran Gibbs half-cleared cross to score Arsenals third goal from 10 yards in the 46th minute.Wengers men werent finished yet and Ozil made it four when he raced onto Santi Cazorlas superb long pass and drilled a low strike past Stoyanov in the 56th minute. There was still time for Ozil to improve his own bid for a bumper new deal as he struck again with a cool finish in the 83rd minute.Ozil completed his hat-trick in the 87th minute when he blasted home with a fierce close-range volley.

Mourinho issues Rashford with England Under-21 warning

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Jose Mourinho does not want Marcus Rashford to be selected for next years European Under-21 Championships if the Manchester United striker is a regular in the senior England squad. The United manager was responding to stories that Englands governing Football Association were keen to include Premier League stars, such as Rashford, in their Under-21 squad for the tournament in Poland in June.Mourinho has no problem with Rashford, who turns 19 on the last day of this month, being a part of that squad - but only if he has not established himself in the senior set-up.We are in mid-October, the Championships will be in the summer, United manager Mourinho said Wednesday.I think we have to wait and see what happens until then. Because if the player becomes a regular in the A national team, if you want to call it that, then to say it is important for his development (to be) with the Under-21s, makes no sense.Gareth Southgate has been promoted from his post as England Under-21 boss to be the manager of the senior England team on an interim basis, with the FA still to announce if the former England defender will succeed Sam Allardyce on a permanent basis after the veteran coach was forced out after just one game following indiscreet comments made to undercover reporters. If hes an Under-21 player in the national team, then he is an Under-21 player and there is no discussion about that, said Mourinho of Rashford. But if he becomes a regular choice for Gareth Southgate in the first team, then we have to speak because we dont want him going.Rashford has five England caps to his name, four of them as a substitute in competitive internationals.Mourinho was speaking as he put the finishing touches to plans for the Europa League group game with Fenerbahce at Old Trafford on Thursday. The game could be the opportunity for Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to feature in the starting side as Mourinho juggles his squad ahead of Sundays trip to Chelsea.Rooney has not started the last four United games and has also seen his place in the England run-on XI disappear under new manager Southgate.Wayne is working well, he is one of those responsible for the atmosphere for the players, insisted Mourinho. He is positive, he is a good example. We count on him to start or be on the bench. He will be there tomorrow (Thursday). As for Mkhitaryan, a 26 million ($34.5 million, 30.7 million euros) pre-season signing from Borussia Dortmund, the Armenian has not been involved since defeat in the Manchester derby in early-September as he struggles to recover from a thigh injury. He was injured and was injured for quite a long time, said Mourinho. Now he is not injured anymore. He has been training with the team without any limitation. I cannot confirm if he plays tomorrow. The only player whom Mourinho confirmed would start against Turkish side Fenerbahce was England left-back Luke Shaw, who has not kicked-off a game for United since the manager criticised hium following last months defeat loss at Watford.Shaw insisted he had taken Mourinhos comments in his stride and was keen to improve.Of course, said Shaw. I said before Im a grown man and I can take what the manager said.Im still young and I need to take on board what he said and improve. Im always going to listen to what the coaches saying have a good attitude about it.Shaw added: I was disappointed with the result but not what the manager said. I take it on board and look to improve. Hopefully I can do that in the next matches.
