Nadal calls for slower balls to prevent injury

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Rafael Nadal believes the modern game is too fast, increasing the risk of injuries at elite level, and advocates the use of balls which bounce less to slow things down. The 30-year-old Spaniard, who has won 14 Grand Slam titles in his career, has been blighted by injury and believes the game should be slowed down to extend players careers at the top level.Today, we play with much more strength. Almost any player can hit a winning point from any position, the current world number 5 told Saturdays edition of German magazine Der Spiegel.Nadal says the fast pace of modern tennis often requires a violent change of pace and direction which increases the risk of injury. The balls travel faster and when you want to return one, you may have to suddenly stop, while playing at a high tempo, or suddenly change direction, he said. Its times like these that you can hurt yourself, its causing us injuries. The former world number one has not reached a final since winning the ATP tournament in Barcelona in April, his second title of the year.On Thursday, Nadal suggested he may call an early halt to his season, and hit the practice courts to try to halt a slide in form after his first-round defeat at the Shanghai Masters.

Stuart Broad hopes Alastair Cook will return to lead England

Posted:

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (AFP) - England cricketer Stuart Broad said on Saturday the team was hopeful captain Alastair Cook would return to lead the side in time for the first Test against Bangladesh next week.Cook arrived in Bangladesh early to acclimatise but returned home on October 11 for the birth of his second child. An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman told AFP Saturday that Cooks wife Alice Hunt was expected to give birth soon but they were not sure when he would be back.Joe Root led the England Test squad in their first warm-up match of the tour in the absence of Cook, who is set to miss their final two-day warm-up fixture, beginning on Sunday.Broad, who is expected to win his 100th Test cap in the first Test on October 20, said he had spoken to Cook, who promised to return in time.As far as we know hes coming back for the Test,Broad told reporters in Chittagong. I spoke to him today a little bit and he seems very confident hell be coming back.Obviously family comes first, so if anything happens back there Im sure hell stay with his wife and take care of things there.Im sure hell be keen to be at the toss on Thursday morning.England were seemingly still undecided about Cooks opening partner, with Ben Duckett and teenager Haseeb Hameed both remaining in contention.Duckett made his case stronger with a fluent innings of 59 off 63 balls in the warm-up match against Bangladesh Cricket Board XI on Saturday.Hameed, however, was dismissed for 16.Broad hailed both Duckett and Hameed.Hes a hugely impressive player. I bowled to him in the nets yesterday, Broad said of Duckett, who also hit two crucial half-centuries in Englands 2-1 win in the preceding one-day international series. He scores in slightly different areas. Hes quite awkward to bowl to and he sticks to his game plan.Hes had such a brilliant breakthrough year both in red-ball and white-ball cricket domestically and hes been brilliant in Bangladesh so far. So his confidence is very high. But Broad said of Hameed that he had a really nice calm aura about him when hes practicing, and certainly in the middle. He knows his game plan for such a young guy, and has been hugely impressive in the conditions so far, he added of the 19-year-old Lancashire batsman. We are not sure when Cooky comes back, and we are not sure what the side will be for Thursday, so its a great opportunity for everyone to impress, he said.

Trump challenges Clinton to drug test, says vote 'rigged'

Posted:

PORTSMOUTH, United States (AFP) - Donald Trump on Saturday challenged his rival Hillary Clinton to a drug test before their next debate, suggesting his Democratic rival was pumped up on performance-enhancing drugs in a stunning new twist to the brutal White House race. The unsubstantiated attack from the Republican nominee came as he accused corrupt media of seeking to rig Novembers vote in Clintons favor, by reporting snowballing claims of sexual misconduct that have thrown his presidential campaign into chaos.Trump has trampled all conventions in his treatment of his opponent, vowing if elected to jail her over her email practices as secretary of state -- and making Lock Her Up a rallying cry for his fired-up supporters. His campaign has actively fueled right-wing conspiracy theories about Clintons health, seizing on her bout of pneumonia last month to suggest she is concealing a major health problem, and is unfit for office. In a bizarre new attack, leveled without proof, he suggested she had taken drugs during their last debate, and called for her to be tested ahead of their final duel Wednesday in Las Vegas.I dont know what is going on with her, the 70-year-old told a rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. At the beginning of her last debate, she was all pumped up at the beginning. At the end, it was like, Take me down, she could barely reach her car.Athletes, they make them take a drug test. I think we should take a drug test prior to the debate. Why dont we do that? Trump said.Saturdays broadside against his Democratic rival marked yet another escalation of Trumps scorched-earth electoral strategy heading into the final weeks of a race that has defied all political norms. As the Manhattan billionaire tanks in the polls -- abandoned by part of his own camp -- he has spent the week claiming the media and a global elite are working against him, alleging that Clinton plotted to destroy the sovereignty of the United States.Hillary is running for president in what looks like a rigged election, he charged in New Hampshire. The election is being rigged by corrupt media pushing completely false allegations and outright lies in an effort to elect her president.Ten women have now come forward to say they were the victim of unwanted advances by the real estate mogul.Trumps latest accuser, 63-year-old Cathy Heller, told The Guardian that he had grabbed and kissed her against her wishes during their first and only meeting 20 years ago.Trump staunchly denies the womens allegations, insisting in one of a barrage of tweets to his 12 million followers: Nothing ever happened with any of these women. Totally made up nonsense to steal the election. Nobody has more respect for women than meA confident Clinton has meanwhile scaled back her campaign commitments, keeping a low profile as her rival battles the incendiary allegations, triggered by the release last week of a video of him bragging about groping women. But the Clinton camp issued a swift response to Trumps latest comments on the election, accusing him of seeking to erode public faith in the vote. This election will have record turnout, because voters see through Donald Trumps shameful attempts to undermine an election weeks before it happens, her campaign manager Robby Mook said in a statement. The virulence of Trumps attacks on the Clinton camp has raised concerns about whether the real estate mogul would even acknowledge a defeat, and how his legions of supporters would react should he lose.President Barack Obama -- who along with First Lady Michelle Obama stepped up this week as a heavy-hitting surrogate for Clinton -- echoed those concerns at a rally Friday, warning democracy itself was at stake in next months vote. This is somebody who... is now suggesting that if the election doesnt go his way, its not because of all the stuff hes said, but its because its rigged and its a fraud, said the US leader, whose second term ends January 20.In a democracy, you have a contest, but if you lose then you say congratulations and you move on.

US military detects failed N. Korean missile launch

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US military said Saturday it had detected an unsuccessful launch by North Korea of a powerful medium-range missile capable of hitting US bases as far away as Guam.UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from using ballistic missile technology, and this latest test came as the UN Security Council is debating fresh sanctions on Pyongyang following its fifth nuclear test in September. The US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) said the launch, detected just after midday Saturday Korea time, was believed to be of a much-hyped Musudan missile which North Korea has now test-fired seven times -- with one partial success.Pentagon spokesman Gary Ross condemned what he called a clear violation of UN resolutions and urged Pyongyang to refrain from any further actions that might raise already elevated tensions on the Korean peninsula. This provocation only serves to increase the international communitys resolve to counter (North Koreas) prohibited activities, said Pentagon spokesman Gary Ross.We remain prepared to defend ourselves and our allies from any attack or provocation, Ross added.First unveiled as an indigenous missile at a military parade in Pyongyang in October 2010, the Musudan has a theoretical range of anywhere between 2,500 and 4,000 kilometres. The lower estimate covers the whole of South Korea and Japan, while the upper range would include US military bases on Guam. After a string of five failed launches, North Korea test fired a Musudan in June that flew 400 kilometres into the Sea of Japan (East Sea). That test was hailed by leader Kim Jong-Un as proof of the Norths ability to strike US bases across the Pacific operation theatre.Saturdays failed launch was detected at 1203 Pyongyang time (0333 GMT)on Saturday from the northwestern North Korean town of Kusong.Such launches are usually reported within hours or even minutes by the South Korean and US militaries, and it was unclear why Sundays USSTRATCOM announcement came so long after the event. There was no immediate confirmation from the South Korean side.US weapons analysts say successful Musudan testing could help the nuclear-armed North develop an operational intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of striking the US mainland by 2020.The North has publicly displayed an ICBM, called the KN-08, which uses the same engine technology as the Musudan but has never been test-fired.The North Korean state media made no mention of Saturdays attempted launch, but the official KCNA news agency carried a foreign ministry statement warning that the United States would pay a high price for recent hostile behaviour that had hurt the dignity of the supreme leadership.President Barack Obama will come to understand the meaning of the price before he leaves the White House, a ministry spokesman said. There has been widespread speculation -- backed by satellite imagery showing activity at key military installations -- that the North is preparing a sixth nuclear test or a long-range rocket launch -- or possibly both. The latest Musudan test was the first since Seoul and Washington agreed to deploy a sophisticated US anti-missile system on South Korean soil to curb the Norths growing nuclear weapons threat.Pyongyang has threatened to take physical action against the new system, which has also been condemned by China as a US bid to flex its military muscle in the region.

Real Madrid score six goals to earn a thumping victory

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) Real had dropped down to fourth due to results earlier in the day, but roared back to a share of the lead and put a poor run behind them with their best display of the season to blow Betis away. When we play with the intensity required it makes it very difficult for the opponent, said a relieved Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane. We have worked on that, but we need to be consistent. This match is a reference point.Raphael Varane headed home Toni Krooss free-kick before the German also teed up Karim Benzema to double the visitors advantage.Marcelos mishit effort found the far corner for Reals third, but there was no such luck needed for a stunning fourth as Madrid marched from one end of the field to the other in seconds before Isco rounded off a stunning team move.Betis improved at the start of the second period and got their reward through Alvaro Cejudos consolation. However, Madrids quality shone through once more when Isco curled expertly into the top corner before Cristiano Ronaldo got his name on the scoresheet 12 minutes from time.Real still trail Atletico on goal difference as Los Rojiblancos went one better in smashing seven past Granada. The response from the team was tremendous, Atletico boss Simeone told BeIN Sports Spain. The Vicente Calderon was briefly stunned by Isaac Cuencas sensational volley from outside the area to open the scoring.Carrasco turned the game around before half-time thanks in part to some poor goalkeeping from Guillermo Ochoa. However, the Mexican was faultless as Carrasco completed his hat-trick with a thumping finish from Griezmanns fine cut-back on the hour mark.Im very happy to score three goals, it is the first hat-trick of my career, added Carrasco.I already have many happy memories here at Atletico and hopefully I have many more to come.Gaitan had only been on the pitch a minute before he added a fourth and then fired in his second nine minutes from time at Ochoas near post. And Carrasco teed up two more for Angel Correa and Tiago in the final five minutes as Atletico made light of a dependence on Griezmann for goals so far this season.Sevilla are just a point behind in third after ending a 17-month wait for an away league win in a 3-2 triumph at Leganes.Franco Vazquez and Samir Nasri put Jorge Sampaolis men well on course to end that barren run before David Timor and Alexander Szymanowski brought Leganes level. However, Pablo Sarabia proved the match winner off the bench when he curled a stunning winner into the top corner five minutes from time.

Manchester City and Tottenham drop points, Arsenal wins

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City twice missed penalties in a 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday as 10-man Arsenal went level with them on points at the top of the Premier League table after seeing off Swansea 3-2.Arsenal leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur into second place after their arch north London rivals also dropped points in a 1-1 draw away to West Bromwich Albion.Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg saved penalties from Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero -- his second spot-kick failure this week after he was off target in Argentinas World Cup qualifying defeat by Paraguay.Romelu Lukaku then fired the visitors ahead in the 64th minute at Eastlands before substitute Agueros miss. But City, whove now gone three games without a win in all competitions, equalised in the 72nd minute when Nolito headed in Silvas cross as former Barcelona team-mates turned managers Pep Guardiola (City) and Ronald Koeman (Everton) had to settle for a point apiece. We did absolutely everything -- Everton create just one chance which was a goal, said Guardiola. The players have all the qualities to score penalties but we miss a lot. Hopefully we will score more of them in future. At the Emirates, Theo Walcott scored twice in seven first-half minutes as Arsenal defeated Swansea for a sixth straight win in all competitions.Swansea, in former United States manager Bob Bradleys first game in charge, saw Gylfi Sigurdsson score in his 100th appearance for the Welsh club with a 38th-minute curling shotBut Mesut Ozil marked his 28th birthday by restoring Arsenals two-goal advantage with a 57th minute-volley.Borja Baston pulled a goal back for Swansea and Arsenal had to play the final 20 minutes a man down after Granit Xhaka received a straight red card for a challenge on Modou Barrow. We could never capitalise on the two-goal cushion but at least we got the three points, said Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager.Liverpool will go level with the top two if they beat bitter rivals Manchester United on Monday.Tottenham dominated possession at The Hawthorns only for former Spurs star Nacer Chadli to put the Baggies ahead eight minutes from time. But Dele Allis 89th-minute equaliser preserved Spurs unbeaten league record.Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said: We missed the opportunity to achieve three points but in the same way it was a difficult game.Chelsea hammered champions Leicester City 3-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Victor Moses.Defeat meant the Foxes had won just two of their eight league games this season and manager Claudio Ranieri, a former Chelsea boss, said: Our approach to the match was not good. The result gave Antonio Conte, Ranieris fellow Italian, a much-needed win after speculation he was about to be sacked as Chelsea manager. From the start I asked them to play well with intensity and to try to do what we are doing in training, said Conte. This is the best game for us.Stoke won in the league for the first time this season as Wales international Joe Allen made it four goals in his last three games by scoring twice in a 2-0 win at home to basement club Sunderland.Meanwhile West Ham climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win away to London rivals Crystal Palace.Manuel Lanzinis 19th-minute goal proved decisive in a match where Palaces Christian Benteke missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time.The Hammers won despite being reduced to 10 men for the final 15 minutes after Aaron Cresswell was sent off for two bookable offences.Ive been the first one lately to criticise the team and the way we played, but tonight we showed we havent given up and how much it means to us put a win on the board, said West Ham captain Mark Noble.Elsewhere, Bournemouth thrashed Hull 6-1 as Mike Phelans first game in full-time charge of the Tigers ended in an a thumping defeat.Charlie Daniels put Bournemouth 1-0 up as early as the fifth minute. Hulls Ryan Moses equalised in the 34th minute but from then on it was one-way traffic as Steve Cook and Junior Stanislas (two goals), Callum Wilson and Dan Gosling also scoring for the Cherries.Phelan, who took caretaker charge of Hull after former manager Steve Bruce left in pre-season, was scathing about his sides display.I feel very embarrassed, he said. Weve got to grow up...What weve done today is not good enough.

Chelsea register 3-0 win against reigning champions Leicester

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea gave Antonio Conte a well-timed vote of confidence as Diego Costa and Eden Hazard inspired a 3-0 win against spluttering champions Leicester on Saturday.Conte had to endure speculation he was in danger of being sacked just three months into his Chelsea reign after bookmakers suspended betting on his dismissal on Thursday. While Conte laughed off the story, the Italian -- under fire after disappointing defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal -- is well aware of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovichs ruthless nature when it comes to firing managers. If there was any doubt in Abramovichs mind about Conte, this confident performance, which gave Chelsea a second successive Premier League victory, gave a glimpse of the potential force the former Italy coach is trying to build.Costas seventh league goal of the campaign put Chelsea ahead and Hazard added the second before Victor Moses sealed the rout. The last time Leicester walked out onto the Stamford Bridge pitch, they were given a guard of honour by Chelseas players to mark the culmination of their astonishing title triumph. But Claudio Ranieris side still seem to be suffering a hangover from those celebrations. They have made a dismal defence of the title so far and are the first reigning English champions to lose their opening four away games since Blackburn in 1995-96.Having vowed to rotate his team more often to cope with their hectic schedule, Ranieri left Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Danny Simpson on the bench ahead of Tuesdays Champions League clash against Copenhagen.Yet the changes did little to put a spring in Leicesters step and they were on the back foot when Moses smashed over a low cross that almost crept in at the near post.Kasper Schmeichel had repelled that effort at the expense of a corner, but the Leicester goalkeeper was powerless to prevent Costa putting Chelsea ahead from the seventh minute set-piece.For the fifth time this season, poor defending from a corner was Leicesters downfall as Nemanja Matic was given space to backheel the cross and, with Foxes captain Wes Morgan reacting too slowly, Costa was left unmarked to finish clinically at the far post.David Luiz came within a whisker of doubling Chelseas lead midway through the half with a 25-yard free-kick that rebounded off the woodwork.Watching the influential NGolo Kante at work in Chelseas midfield underlined how much the France internationals presence has been missed by Leicester since he moved to the Blues in the close-season.Lacking the relentless tempo that carried them to the title, Leicester were bereft of any menace and it was no surprise when Chelsea punished them with a second goal in the 33rd minute.Once again, Chelsea took advantage of woeful defending as Matics pass drew panicked and mistimed attempts to clear from Robert Huth and Luis Hernandez.Pedro, lying on the turf after slipping, poked a pass to Hazard, who scampered clear as the ball bounced fortuitously off his shoulder before rounding Schmeichel and slotting into the unguarded net for his first Chelsea goal since August.Although Conte was using Luiz as one of three central defenders, Leicester were so poor that the Brazilian was able to contribute most often in attack and Schmeichel had to push away another of his powerful free-kicks.Schmeichel was called into action again soon after the interval, plunging to his right to claw away a Moses strike from Kantes pass.A rare incisive Leicester move ended with Luiz turning Marc Albrightons cross against his own post as he tried to clear. But Leicester remained second best all over the pitch and Moses capped Chelseas stylish show with a fine goal in the 80th minute.Exchanging passes with substitute Nathaniel Chalobah, Nigeria winger Moses ran clear into the penalty area and planted a low shot past Schmeichel before celebrating with an extravagant back-flip.

Raging Djokovic sent crashing in Shanghai Masters

Posted:

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Novak Djokovic smashed his racquet, tore his shirt and raged at the chair umpire as he was stunned in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals by Roberto Bautista on Saturday. The defending champion and 12-time Grand Slam champion was broken once in the first set and three times in the second as he lost 6-4, 6-4 in his first defeat to the Spaniard.Djokovic has been out of sorts since he won his first French Open title in June, losing early at Wimbledon and the Olympics and complaining he had lost motivation. The 29-year-old Serb, whose top ranking is under threat from Andy Murray, hummed to keep up his spirits during his quarter-final escape against German qualifier Mischa Zverev. But the three-time champion failed to keep his cool in a stormy appearance at Shanghais Qi Zhong Tennis Centre as he suffered a rare defeat in China.Nineteenth-ranked Bautista put away two brilliant forehands as he fought off break points in the ninth game, and he then pounced as Djokovic was serving to stay in the first set.A sublime disguised lob set up break point and when Djokovic fired wide to hand over the set, he snapped and repeatedly slammed his racquet into the deck.Djokovic grabbed a towel and cleaned up his racquet splinters as the second set got underway, but tempers frayed again at 1-1 over a serve he felt was long. Are you seeing anything today? Are you seeing anything? fumed the Serb, gesticulating at the Brazilian chair umpire Carlos Bernardes. Then Djokovic, angry at failing to secure a break point in game five, theatrically tore his shirt at the neck and went to change it mid-game, receiving a time violation warning. They exchanged breaks before Djokovic was broken again to be left staring at defeat -- only to save three match points before getting it back on serve in a tense game nine. But a forehand into the net brought up a fourth match point on his own serve, and this time Bautista grabbed the opportunity as he arrowed a pass down the line.Im so happy, said Bautista, after beating Djokovic at the sixth attempt to reach his first Masters final. Im just so happy how Ive played this week.Im feeling really good on this court and I hope to enjoy it until the last point here.Murray, the world number two, and Gilles Simon play later to decide who will meet Bautista in Sundays final.

Messi scores on return as Barcelona win 4-0 against Deportivo

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi took just three minutes to score on his return from injury as Barcelona thrashed Deportivo la Coruna 4-0, but they were upstaged by Yannick Carrascos hat-trick in a 7-1 rout for leaders Atletico Madrid over Granada on Saturday.Barca were already 3-0 up thanks to Luis Suarez and a double from Rafinha when Messi was introduced after nearly a month out with a groin problem just before the hour mark and wasted no time in scoring his ninth goal of the season. However, Barca still trail Atletico by two points after Carrascos treble and Nicolas Gaitans first two goals for the club inspired a storming fightback by Diego Simeones men after falling behind early on.Sevilla are second after their first away win in La Liga in 23 games, triumphing 3-2 at Leganes.Real Madrid can move level with Atletico with victory at Real Betis later. It was a complete performance, said Barca boss Luis Enrique. We have Leo back and it took him no time to be back in top form.Barca have traditionally struggled on weekends following international breaks and fell to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Alaves on their return to action in September. However, they had to wait just 21 minutes to open the scoring when Rafinha exchanged a one-two with Suarez before drilling a low shot that had too much power for German Lux.Rafinha bundled home a second 15 minutes later after Lux had saved Gerard Piques initial effort.Suarez moved level with Antoine Griezmann as La Ligas top scorer with six this season when he brilliantly turned away from the Deportivo defence when receiving Neymars through ball before slotting home the third. The Uruguayan then smacked the post himself on the volley before he was replaced by Paco Alcacer at half-time to keep him fresh for the visit of City on Wednesday.Messi was next to be introduced from the bench and took just three touches to find the net when he flicked another Neymar assist over the helpless Lux.Deportivos day was rounded off by a red card for Laure 25 minutes from time when for elbowing Neymar in the face.Granada travelled to the Vicente Calderon without a win this season, but threatened a huge shock when Isaac Cuencas sensational volley from outside the area saw Atletico concede for just the third time this season.Carrasco turned the game around before half-time thanks in part to some poor goalkeeping from Guillermo Ochoa. However, the Mexican was faultless as Carrasco completed his first career hat-trick with a thumping finish from Antoine Griezmanns fine cut-back on the hour mark.Gaitan had only been on the pitch a minute before he added a fourth and then fired in his second nine minutes from time at Ochoas near post. And Carrasco teed up two more for Angel Correa and Tiago in the final five minutes as Atletico made light of a dependence on Griezmann for goals so far this season.Sevilla host Atletico next weekend in a top of the table clash after ending a 17-month wait for an away league win at Leganes.Franco Vazquezs opener and a second from the impressive Samir Nasri just before the hour mark put Jorge Sampaolis men well on course to end that barren run. However, their defensive frailties looked set to cost them victory once more as Leganes fought back with two goals in three minutes through David Timor and Alexander Szymanowski.Pablo Sarabia proved the match winner off the bench, though, when he curled home from outside the area his third goal in just seven La Liga games since joining from Getafe.

West Indies 315/6, still 264 runs behind Pakistan at the end of third day

DUBAI (AFP) - Pakistan pushed the West Indies hard despite dogged resistance from Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels on the third day of the first day-night Test in Dubai on Saturday.Bravo defied a potent bowling attack to score 87 during a 402-minute stay at the crease while Samuels made 76 as the West Indies closed on 315-6, still trailing Pakistans first innings total of 579-3 declared by 264 runs.Shane Dowrich was unbeaten on 27 with skipper Jason Holder 10 not out at the close of play.West Indies need to reach 380 to avoid following-on, but the duration of their innings suggests Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-haq may not enforce it and bat again on Sunday.Bravo and Samuels were engaged in a resolute 113-run stand for the third wicket as the Dubai stadium pitch did not offer much help to Pakistans attack. When it looked Bravo would remain unbeaten and complete his eighth hundred he fell to a lazy push off left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz and was caught by Azhar Ali at forward short-leg for the debutants first wicket.Bravo hit nine fours and a six during his 258-ball vigil.Bravo had added another 77 for the fourth wicket with Jermaine Blackwood (37) but fiery paceman Wahab Riaz took two quick-fire wickets after Pakistan took the second new ball with the score at 229-3.Leg-spinner Yasir Shah and Riaz finished with two wickets apiece.Samuels hit two boundaries off the first two balls he faced, driving powerfully off Shah and settling down quickly on a flat pitch. He took a single off Nawaz to reach his 24th Test fifty and continued in an aggressive style with 13 boundaries.Samuels looked set for his first hundred since April last year but fell leg-before to paceman Sohail Khan when he missed an inswinging delivery and was caught plumb in front.Pakistan had looked for early breakthroughs after the West Indies started the day at 69-1 and were rewarded when Shah bowled Kraigg Brathwaite for 32 with a delivery which turned slightly and beat the bat.Pakistans big total was built around opener Azhar Alis unbeaten 302, his countrys fourth triple century.
