England in commanding position against Bangladesh in first test

Posted:

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (AFP) - Ben Stokes gave England a firm grip on the first Test with bat and ball before Shakib Al Hasans 5-79 revived Bangladesh hopes in Chittagong on Saturday.Stokes hit 85 runs in the second innings to steer England to 228-8 at stumps on the third day after his three-wicket burst earlier in the morning helped them dismiss Bangladesh for 248 runs. The visitors now lead their hosts by 273 runs, which could be handy on a pitch that offered spinners plenty of turn, making life difficult for batsmen from both sides.Stokes appeared to have mastered the wicket with his counterattacking innings, which came off 151 balls with six fours and three sixes.Jonny Bairstow gave him a good company as the duo shared 127 for the sixth wicket to bail out England from a precarious 62-5 in the second innings.Bairstow missed out on a very deserving half-century, leaving the pitch for 47 after he was played on by Kamrul Islam, the bowlers maiden Test wicket and only wicket so far taken by a Bangladeshi seamer in the match.Shakib soon trapped Stokes in front to end an highly impressive innings before he completed his 15th five-wicket haul with the scalp of Adil Rashid.Chris Woakes (11 not out) and Stuart Broad (10 not out) remained at the crease overnight hoping to extend Englands advantage before they set the fourth innings target for Bangladesh.Shakib led Bangladeshs fightback before the lunch break leaving England at 28-3 after the visitors took a 45-run lead in the first innings.Englands hopes of building a sizeable advantage were dealt a blow when debutant spinner Mehedi Hasan induced an edge from captain Alastair Cook to send him back for 12.Shakib trapped Joe Root lbw for one in the next over to take his 150th Test wicket before he had Ben Duckett caught by Mominul Haque at forward short leg for 15.Gary Ballance fell to Taijul Islam for nine after the break before Shakib grabbed his third wicket by dismissing Moeen Ali for 14.It was a comeback for the Bangladesh all-rounder, who put his team in trouble by throwing his wicket off the second ball of the morning.Resuming on 221-5, Bangladesh were hoping Shakib, who was unbeaten on 31 overnight, would take them close to Englands first innings total. But he went down the wicket before the dust had settled and paid the price as Bairstow completed a simple stumping.Rashid removed nightwatchman Shafiul Islam for two as Stuart Broad took the catch high on his head at midwicket.Stokes, who finished with 4-26, had Mehedi lbw for one in the next over before a low catch at slip by Cook ended Sabbir Rahmans effort at 19.He bowled third debutant Kamrul Islam in the same over to wrap up Bangladeshs innings as the hosts added just 27 runs to their overnight score for the loss of five wickets in 12 overs.

Messi scores twice as Barcelona earn thrilling 3-2 win againstt Valencia

Posted:

MADRID(AFP) - Lionel Messi shrugged off his recent woes from the penalty spot with a decisive 94th-minute spot-kick to move Barcelona top of La Liga with a pulsating 3-2 win at Valencia on Saturday. However, the dramatic victory came at a cost for Barca as a tearful Andres Iniesta suffered ligament damage in his right knee that could keep him out for several months.Messi netted twice and his opener midway through the first half was allowed to stand despite Luis Suarez straying into an offside position.Valencia hit back with two goals in six second-half minutes through on-loan Barca winger Munir El Haddadi and Rodrigo. However, Suarez levelled and was then upended inside the area by Aymen Abdennour to allow Messi to hold his nerve and slot past penalty-stopping specialist Diego Alves for all three points.Victory moves the champions a point clear of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, who face Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao respectively on Sunday. He may be one of the finest footballers ever but Messi has struggled from the spot in recent seasons, most notably blazing over as Argentina lost the Copa America final to Chile in June. Our best penalty-taker is Leo Messi without any doubt, Barca boss Luis Enrique said.Valencia stopper Alves had saved three penalties this season and from Messi in the past, but was beaten low to his right.Messi took responsibility in the best moment and it is a glorious feeling for us, added Enrique.A bad-tempered encounter spilled over after Messis strike, though, as Suarez and Neymar were hit by a plastic bottle thrown by the Valencia fans as Barca celebrated. We celebrated as it is normal to celebrate a last-minute winner, said Enrique. The game was only 14 minutes old when Iniesta was carried from the field in tears holding his right knee, which buckled under a heavy challenge from Enzo Perez.Enrique was furious with referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco as Perez avoided even a yellow card, whilst a series of other fouls on Barca players went unpunished.Barca confirmed Iniesta suffered lateral collateral ligament damage, but said further tests would be carried out to determine the exact extent of the injury. However, it was Valencia who were up in arms at the officials when Messi opened the scoring on 22 minutes. The Argentines fifth goal in three games since returning from a groin injury sneaked in at Alvess near post, but the Brazilian goalkeeper had been distracted by the presence of the offside Suarez jumping over Messis effort. It is lamentable, absolutely lamentable that refereeing decisions prevented Valencia from taking a point or more from this match, Valencia sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch told BeIN Sports Spain.Valencia turned the game around early in the second half as Dani Parejos cut-back was drilled into the bottom corner by El Haddadi against his parent club. The 21-year-old held his hands up apologetically after finding the net, but there were wild celebrations led by new Valencia boss Cesare Prandelli moments later when Rodrigo swept home Nanis through ball.Valencias lead lasted just six minutes despite Alvess best efforts as Suarez pounced to smash home a rebound after Ivan Rakitics powerful header had been saved by the Valencia stopper.Barca swarmed forward in search of a winner, but had to wait until deep into stoppage time when Messi played in Suarez and he was clearly taken out from behind by Abdennour.Messi stroked home his 14th goal of the season to secure a vital three points in the title race.Earlier, Espanyol battled back from 3-0 down at half-time to salvage a point and possibly coach Quique Sanchez Floress job in a 3-3 draw at home to Eibar.Granada and Sporting Gijon remain in the relegation zone after a 0-0, whilst Real Sociedad moved into the top half with a comfortable 3-0 win over Alaves.

Tearful Iniesta out for 2-3 months after horrible injury

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta will be out for between six and eight weeks, the Spanish champions confirmed on Saturday after he suffered knee ligament damage in a 3-2 win at Valencia.Iniesta was stretchered from the field in tears after just 14 minutes, but fears he could be sidelined for months were eased by tests upon his return to Barcelona. After the first diagnosis carried out at Mestalla, the tests in Barcelona have shown the extent of the injury, Barca said in a statement. The time out is between six and eight weeks.Iniesta could now return in time to face Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season on December 3.However, he will miss Barcas Champions League trips to Manchester City and Celtic next month.Barca had earlier confirmed Iniesta had injured the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.Coach Luis Enrique was incensed when Valencias Argentine midfielder Enzo Perez escaped without even a yellow card for the challenge that caused the injury. We saw very clearly from the tackle it was an injury, and a serious one, said Enrique. We will see tomorrow, but it will be weeks. There wasnt even a yellow card.Barcas season has been plagued by injuries so far as Lionel Messi has just returned from nearly a month out, whilst Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba were injured in Wednesdays 4-0 win over Manchester City.Messi has returned in fine form, though, as his sixth goal in three games since his comeback deep into stoppage time from the penalty spot moved Barca to the top of La Liga.

Wenger blames Cazorla's absence as Arsenal drop points

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Arsene Wenger bemoaned the absence of Santi Cazorla after Arsenal were held to a drab goalless draw by struggling Middlesbrough.Cazorla did not feature at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and the Spanish midfielder was sorely missed by the spluttering Gunners.Arsenal were frustrated by Middlesbrough as they wasted a chance to win for a seventh successive Premier League game and eighth in all competitions. You always miss Cazorla at home. From deep midfield into the final third his pass is always quick, accurate, said Wenger, whose side will be knocked out of first place if Manchester City avoid defeat against Southampton on Sunday.Cazorla, I dont really know when he will be back. We have to see how he recovers on Monday. There was better news on France striker Olivier Giroud who is now set to return for Arsenals home League Cup game with Reading on Tuesday. We didnt make enough from our set-pieces and crosses. So the first thing that comes to mind is whether a guy with more size and physical presence in the box could have helped, said Wenger. But we have just come out of six straight wins so I wouldnt like to jump on this kind of excuse. We have to deal with what we face and unfortunately we are used to scoring. We are an offensive team.We had five or six offensive players on the pitch at the end but we didnt manage to score so its a bit frustrating. Its part of the Premier League. The other day Manchester City had a similar possession against Everton and didnt win.We have to find a way to be efficient even when the games are like that.Wenger, whose side had beaten Ludogorets 6-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, saw the Gunners run out of ideas and it was his own goalkeeper Petr Cech forced into a string of saves. It is a game where you had a lot of possession but there were tired legs and you are prone to counter-attacks, said the Frenchman, who was celebrating his 67th birthday on Saturday. You make it difficult for yourself. 75 per cent possession but you could have lost the game, that is modern football. When you are not sharp, you lack creativity in the final third. I must say, we gave everything but we did not have the legs today. The energy levels were a bit down but we were intelligent enough not to lose it. We were exposed at times. When you cannot win, you must not lose. They had chances but our goalkeeper saved us today. Petr Cech had a good performance in decisive phases. We tried. You dont win on command though. We lacked our creative potential around the box. That is part of it.While Wenger was disappointed, Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka was delighted with the way his side played following a disappointing 1-0 loss to Watford last week.It was an amazing performance from my team, he said. After the last defeat at home especially, it was tough for us.But we worked hard on the training field and today the plan worked really well. For me and for us it is great to come to the Emirates, and for the best Arsenal player to be Petr Cech.I think we should have won the game because we had good chances. We knew that we couldnt park the bus, but they have a lot of quality players. We were organised and our transition play was very good.

An innings, which earned him millions of fans in just few hours.2. 141 vs India in Chennai Test (1999)Afridi was never considered to be a great test player but still he has played one of the best innings ever played in a Pakistan vs India test match. 18-year-old Afridi was playing only in his second test match, against India, in India. Pakistan and India were playing a test match against each other after 10 years so pressure was at its best.India took 16 runs lead in the first innings and Pakistan lost their experienced opener Saeed Anwar and Ijaz Ahmed early. Something special was needed from Afridi and he came up with exactly that. He played the longest innings of his career and scored 141 runs to give Pakistan a defendable total. Pakistan lost last 6 wickets for 11 runs but Afridis heroics helped Pakistan win the match by 12 runs.3. 102 off 45 balls against India in Mohali 2005 ODIPakistan were playing an ODI series in India after a long time and India had beaten Pakistan 3-2 in Pakistan in the previous year, so the series was even more important than usual high pressure India-Pakistan series. The series was level at 2-2 and a loss would have made situation very difficult for Pakistan in 6-match series. But Afridi ripped apart the Indian bowlers and scored his second fastest ODI century off just 45 balls to win the game for Pakistan easily.4. 156 vs India in Faisalabad Test 2006Afridis highest score in International cricket is 156, and it also came against India in test match. He had scored a century in the previous test match as well, and once again India bowlers were smashed by him all over the ground. Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble got special treatment from him as he hit 6 sixes and 20 fours to score 156 off just 128 balls.5. Half-century against Sri Lanka in the 2009 World T20 finalAfridi played many top innings that won matches for Pakistan and none of them won a trophy like 2009 World T20 final. Afridis amazing performances with both bat and ball helped Pakistan reach final. He was man of the match in semifinal against South Africa and then in final he scored a fifty against Sri Lanka to make Pakistan world champions. The story has been written by Talal Dar
