UN announces 72-hour truce for Yemen

Posted:

ADEN (AFP) - A 72-hour ceasefire in Yemen will go into effect starting Thursday, the United Nations announced on Monday.A cessation of hostilities that first went into effect in April will re-enter into force at 23:59 Yemen time (2059 GMT) on 19 October 2016, for an initial period of 72 hours, subject to renewal, the UNs special envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, said in a statement. The announcement comes after Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi agreed to the ceasefire in a statement earlier on Monday, a day after international calls for a truce.Ahmed on Sunday said he had been in contact with the Huthi militias lead negotiator and Hadis government. The United States, Britain and the UN peace envoy to Yemen on Sunday urged the warring parties in the countrys civil war to declare a ceasefire.Saudi Arabias impoverished neighbour has been rocked by a deadly war since pro-Iran rebels overran the capital Sanaa in September 2014.However, the conflict escalated after an Arab coalition, led by Riyadh, launched a bombing campaign against the Shiite Huthi rebels and their allies in March 2015.The conflict in Yemen has killed almost 6,900 people, wounded more than 35,000 and displaced at least three million since March last year, according to the United Nations. On Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry met in London with the UN envoy and his opposite numbers from Britain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to discuss the Yemen conflict. This is the time to implement a ceasefire unconditionally and then move to the negotiating table, US Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters after the talks.Previous attempts to enforce a ceasefire in the country have so far failed with the war intensifying after a round of peace talks in Kuwait ended in August without achieving a breakthrough. The Saudi-led coalition has stepped up its air raids following the breakdown of talks and cross-border attacks from Yemen have also intensified. The previous ceasefire, announced in conjunction with the start of the Kuwait talks, was hardly observed on ground, with both sides trading blame for violating the truce.Earlier this month, the UN envoy had said that a 72-hour ceasefire was expected soon adding that he was hoping to draft a new peace plan for Yemen. The coalition has carried out hundreds of air strikes and provided ground troops to support Hadis forces. But it has failed to dislodge the Huthi rebels, who are allied with forces loyal to ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, from key areas including the capital Sanaa. The rebels still control large parts of the north, their historic stronghold areas, and other regions of western and central Yemen.Taez, the countrys third city, is almost completely surrounded by the Huthis and their allies and loyalist forces have for months tried to break the rebel grip on the southwestern city.Government forces have recaptured the south and east but failed to make any significant advances.

Iraqi forces 'ahead of schedule' in Mosul: Pentagon

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Iraqi security forces were ahead of schedule after the first day of an offensive for the Islamic State-held city of Mosul, a Pentagon official said Monday.A US-led coalition has for months been helping train Iraqi forces for the fight for Mosul -- the last IS stronghold in Iraq -- and the military offensive finally got underway early Monday.Early indications are that Iraqi forces have met their objectives so far, and that they are ahead of schedule for this first day, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said. But he warned it was unknown how long the battle would last. A top US general earlier said it would take several weeks or even longer. We are in the first day of what we assume will be a difficult campaign that could take some time, Cook said. After IS overran large parts of Iraq and Syria in early 2014, the United States formed a coalition that launched an air campaign to strike the Sunni extremists and to train local, partnered forces to do the fighting. The coalition has trained more than 45,000 Iraqi troops and launched more than 10,000 precision strikes in Iraq -- including more than 70 in the Mosul area this month, the Pentagon says. The start of the long-awaited assault has raised deep concerns for hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in Iraqs second-largest city, with aid groups warning of a massive humanitarian crisis. The Iraqi government has dropped thousands of leaflets on Mosul telling residents what to do during the offensive. My understanding is that there may be as many as seven million leaflets dropped in the next 48 hours or so to try and educate the population of Mosul as to the safest way to conduct themselves as this fighting plays out, Cook said. There is an effort to try and reach out to the people of Mosul to try and make them as aware as possible of whats to come and the dangers they face.

Iraq forces advance on IS stronghold of Mosul

AL-SHURA (AFP) - Iraqi forces advanced Monday in an offensive aimed at retaking Mosul and dealing a death blow to the Islamic State groups caliphate in the city where it was declared two years ago.The start of the long-awaited assault raised deep concerns for hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in Iraqs second-largest city, with aid groups warning of a massive humanitarian crisis. Some 30,000 federal forces are leading the offensive, backed by air and ground support from a 60-nation US-led coalition, in what is expected to be a long and difficult assault on ISs last major Iraqi stronghold.Iraqi forces readied weapons and ammunition as columns of armoured vehicles headed towards Mosul from the town of Al-Shura, some 45 kilometres (30 miles) south of the city. The Pentagon described the operation as a decisive moment in the fight against IS, but the US-led coalitions top commander warned it could last weeks or more.Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the beginning of the assault in a televised address early Monday.Today I declare the start of these victorious operations to free you from the violence and terrorism of Daesh (IS), Abadi said.IS seized control of large parts of Iraq and neighbouring Syria in mid-2014, declaring a cross-border caliphate and committing widespread atrocities. The jihadists have suffered a string of territorial defeats this year in both countries, and the retaking of Mosul would all but end their presence in Iraq as a land-holding force.Iraqi forces have been closing in on Mosul in recent weeks but the battle begun Monday could be the toughest yet against IS.IS forces are vastly outnumbered, with the US military estimating 3,000 to 4,500 jihadists in and around Mosul. But they have had months to prepare and will seek to use hit-and-run tactics, ambushes, snipers, bombs, berms and trenches to slow down and bleed Iraqi forces. In an online statement after the assault began, IS claimed it launched a series of deadly suicide car bombings against Iraqi forces.Early Monday, federal forces moved from their main staging base of Qayyarah, south of Mosul, as peshmerga forces from the autonomous Kurdish region advanced from the east.Around 4,000 Kurdish peshmerga took part in a push to reclaim villages once inhabited by members of the Christian and Kakai minorities, a statement said.Several villages were promptly recaptured and peshmerga forces had moved to the edges of Qaraqosh and Bartalla, two Christian towns IS seized in August 2014, commanders said.At a staging area near Khazir village east of Mosul, Kurdish forces fired artillery and rockets as smoke rose from houses in the distance. The United Nations and other aid organisations warned that a huge number of civilians were in immediate danger.I am extremely concerned for the safety of up to 1.5 million people, the UN deputy secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, Stephen OBrien, said. The UNs humanitarian coordinator in Iraq, Lise Grande, told reporters that an exodus could begin within a week and some aid groups worried about preparedness. It is estimated that as many as 200,000 people could flee from the city in these first weeks, though there are currently only 60,000 tents available in seven emergency camps, the International Rescue Committee said.In London, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Riyadh had urged Iraqs government not to let Shiite militias enter Sunni-majority Mosul, fearing mass atrocities. It could add fuel to the sectarian fires raging in the region and so we have urged the Iraqi government not to use the Shia militias. That is the greatest danger that we see, he said.Iraqi forces advancing on multiple fronts are some distance from Mosul and are expected to eventually take up positions on the citys edge and lay siege before breaching its boundaries and directly engaging die-hard jihadists. This operation to regain control of Iraqs second-largest city will likely continue for weeks, possibly longer, warned Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend, commander of the US-led coalition. Most of the coalitions support has come in the shape of air strikes and training, but US, French and British special forces are also on the ground to advise local forces. This is a decisive moment in the campaign to deliver ISIL a lasting defeat, US Secretary of Defence Ash Carter said, using an alternative acronym for IS.President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday indicated that Turkey would also play a role in the offensive despite concerns raised by Baghdad. We will be in the operation and we will be at the table, Erdogan said in a televised speech. It is out of the question that we are not involved. As the biggest Iraqi military operation since the 2011 withdrawal of US troops unfolded, a Turkish delegation arrived in Baghdad for talks and coalition defence ministers agreed to meet in Paris on October 25 to take stock.IS once controlled more than a third of Iraqs territory but its self-proclaimed state has been shrinking steadily. It lost its emblematic bastion Fallujah in June, the Anbar provincial capital Ramadi months earlier and on Sunday Syrian rebels retook the town of Dabiq, which held special ideological significance for the group. If Mosul falls, only Raqa in Syria would remain as the last major city in either country under IS control. But even the recapture of Mosul will not mark the end of the war against IS, which is likely to increasingly turn to insurgent tactics as it loses more ground.Just hours after the offensive began, IS claimed responsibility for a suicide car bombing targeting an Iraqi army checkpoint south of Baghdad that killed at least 10 people. The jihadists have claimed a string of deadly bombings in Baghdad in recent days.

Clinton widens lead in latest poll as Trump cries foul

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Hillary Clinton has widened her lead over Donald Trump nationally and in key swing states three weeks before Election Day, a poll showed Monday, as the Republican presidential nominee struggled to find a way back into the race.Trump, whose campaign has been reeling in the face of lewd comments about women and accusations of sexual assault, has doubled down on claims of large scale voter fraud in the US election, despite denials from within his own party. And his team has deployed his wife Melania in a media blitz to try to tamp down the furor over the allegations, with interviews set to air late Monday on CNN and early Tuesday on Fox News. Those words, they were offensive to me and they were inappropriate. And he apologized to me. And I accept his apology. And we are moving on, Trump told Fox, in an excerpt released by the network. The Republican nominee takes the stage Wednesday with his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in their final debate before voters make their choice on November 8.Clinton leads Trump by 12 points -- 50 percent to 38 percent -- among likely voters nationwide, in a four-way contest with third-party candidates, a poll by Monmouth University showed. Among registered voters, her lead is 11 points.Meanwhile, a survey from Quinnipiac University showed Clinton leading in several key battleground states -- Colorado, Florida and Pennsylvania -- and even with Trump in Ohio. A CNN poll puts Trump ahead by four points in Ohio, but gives Clinton a slight lead in North Carolina and Nevada. Her leads in key states corresponds to her advantage of 6.4 percentage points in an average of recent national polls given by RealClearPolitics. The polls indicate that the allegations swirling around Trump have taken their toll. Monmouth University found that six in 10 voters believe he made unwanted sexual advances towards women -- claims he vehemently denies.Trump, who was headed to Wisconsin for a rally, is scheduled to hold two events Tuesday in Colorado. After the first debate, Trump said he would respect the election result. But he backtracked in an interview with The New York Times last month, saying, Were going to see what happens. And since then, he has unleashed a litany of complaints about the nations election system, and also blamed the media for his woes, raising concerns about possible unrest should he lose.Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day, Trump wrote on Twitter, without offering corroborating evidence. Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naiveTrumps running mate Mike Pence sought to ease tensions, insisting his camp would accept defeat if voters reject the Republican ticket at the polls. We will absolutely accept the results of the election, he told CBS Sunday.Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican who oversees election operations in his state, insisted Monday that Trump was being irresponsible for warning of voter fraud. If there is a systemic problem, please identify it. Dont just make an allegation on Twitter. Tell me, Husted said on CNN.For Clintons campaign manager Robby Mook, Trump is desperately trying to shift attention from his own disastrous campaign. He knows hes losing and hes trying to blame that on the system. This is what losers do, Mook said during a press call on Monday. But Trumps warnings may be having an impact.A new poll by Politico and Morning Consult reveals that some 41 percent of voters believe the election could be stolen from Trump through massive voter fraud.More than seven in 10 Republicans believe the election could be taken from them, while 17 percent of Democrats agree with the potential for serious ballot box fraud. The poll of 1,999 registered voters was conducted October 13-15.The nations top elected Republican, House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has declared that he would no longer defend the partys nominee, rebuked Trump over his comments questioning the validity of the election process.Ryan is fully confident the states will carry out this election with integrity, his spokeswoman AshLee Strong said.Clinton is lying low ahead of the final debate, apparently relying on Trump self-destructing.She is trying to avoid issues for the next 22 days in the hopes that this will just end up being about Mr. Trump, his campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told CNN Monday outside of Trump Tower in New York.

Pakistan clinch day-night Test despite Bravo's ton

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Despite a fighting hundred by Darren Bravo Pakistan pulled off a tension-packed 56-run victory against West Indies in the first day-night Test in Dubai on Monday.Bravo kept Pakistans victory bid on hold during his resistance-filled 410-minute long 116 and it needed leg-spinner Yasir Shah to make a stunning two-handed catch to end his innings.West Indies were finally bowled for 289 with just 12 over left in the match.Bravo lingered on his haunches at the crease for a minute before trudging back to the pavilion, disappointed at his dismissal after bringing so close a draw or an upset win. Bravos eighth Test hundred spiced with ten boundaries and a six had brought West Indies within 83 runs of victory and 27 ovesr to bat for a draw after they were set a daunting 346 runs to win.Left-armer Mohammad Nawaz trapped Devendra Bishoo while Miguel Cummins and last man Shannon Gabriel were run out to spark a celebration amongst Pakistan players.Paceman Mohammad Amir finished with 3-63 and Shah took 2-113.The match was a good advertisement for Test cricket as it had a triple hundred (302 not out) by Azhar Ali, 8-49 by leg-spinner Bishoo and two fighting knocks by Bravo.Pakistan had never hoped to strive that much after getting an important wicket of Marlon Samuels with the first ball of the day but Bravo left them frustrated and near to capitulation. This was Test crickets second ever day-night Test played with a pink ball after Australia and New Zealand featured in the first at Adelaide in November last year. The win is more memorable for Pakistan as the match marked their 400th Test since they began the five-day format in 1952.Bravo first added 77 for the fifth wicket with Roston Chase (35) and then another 69 for the seventh with skipper Jason Holder who made 40 not out. Pakistan had taken the second new ball with West Indies 224-6 and Bravo needing four for hundred. Bravo smashed an uppish drive off Amirs first ball to backward point boundary to complete his magnificent hundred after 329-minutes of defiance.Bravo and Holder took the West Indies within 100 of victory in 41 overs after they reached dinner at 232-6.Chase, famous for his 137 not out at Jamaica which helped West Indies draw a Test against India in July this year, gave full support to Bravo as the duo frustrated Pakistan.Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq lauded the win.The way the Pakistan team is playing they are keeping Test cricket alive, said Misbah, who now has 23 wins in 47 Tests as captain.Credit to West Indies, the way Bishoo bowled. Even in the first innings, they batted well. We got out cheaply in the second innings and got out to loose shots. Bravo was wonderful and fought hard. The West Indian captain praised his teams fight till the bitter end.It was a good fight, but still disappointed we dint get over the line. Bishoos spell and Bravos knock were inspirational. Definite signs of improvement in performance, said Holder.Pakistans hopes rested on Shah who was not at his best despite the good turn on offer. He finally got his first wicket when he bowled Chase from across his feet.Paceman Wahab Riaz then dismissed Shane Dowrich for nought to leave West Indies at 194-6.West Indies had resumed at 95-2 and were instantly in trouble when Amir had Samuels caught behind for four with the first ball of the day.Jermaine Blackwood (15) helped Bravo take the total to 116 when left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz trapped him leg-before, a decision Pakistan only got on referral.Pakistan did not get what was expected from Shah in the first session as he bowled faster rather than giving flight to the ball. The remaining two Tests will be played in Abu Dhabi (October 21-25) and Sharjah (October 30-November 3).

Birthday boy Duckett shines again for England

Posted:

CHITTAGONG (AFP) - Ben Duckett celebrated his 22nd birthday Monday by scoring another half-century in Englands final warm-up before a series against Bangladesh, enhancing his prospects of a Test debut.Duckett hit 60 including 10 fours as England reached 256 all out in their only innings, replying to a Bangladesh Cricket Board XIs total of 294 at Chittagongs MA Aziz stadium.Duckett retired after completing his fourth half century in the last five innings to allow other England batsmen to get some kind of practice, although few of his teammates made the most of their opportunity. Its nice to get out in the middle and play a game as opposed to playing in the nets, Duckett said after the match.Haseeb Hameed, who is vying with the left-hander Duckett for a place at the top of the order in Thursdays opening Test in Chittagong, hit 57 off 125 balls before he also retired.Duckett played down the competition between the two batsmen, neither of whom has made their Test debut. We are teammates at the end of the day, so its not necessarily competition, he said of the 19-year-old Lancashire player.Whoever plays sure deserves it. Like he did today, Has can bat for days. Thats the way we play, we are different players. After Duckett and Hameeds retirements, stand-in skipper Joe Root made 24 before becoming the first of three quick wickets for left-spinner Tanvir Haider soon after the lunch break.Tanvir, who finished with 4-53, had Root caught by wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan before he dismissed Jonny Bairstow (six) and Jos Buttler (four).Paceman Subashis Roy bowled Ben Stokes for 25 but Gary Ballance played a patient knock to remain unbeaten on 36.After the match beginning in Chittagong on Thursday, the teams will head to Dhaka for the second and final Test.

Watson part of Aussie team 'tumour': Clarke

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has revisited old feuds, describing Shane Watson as part of a group that was like a tumour on the team.Star batsman Clarke also spoke of his notorious dressing-room bust-up with Simon Katich, who grabbed the then vice-captains throat during a disagreement about when the team song should be sung after Australias Test win against South Africa in 2009.In a television interview with Channel Nines 60 Minutes programme aired late Sunday to coincide with the release of his autobiography, Clarke spoke of his stormy relationships. He denied labelling all-rounder Watson a cancer on the team, a claim made by Mickey Arthur in documents connected to the former coachs legal action against Cricket Australia following the South Africans sacking three years ago after a 4-0 defeat in India.Watson had been one of four players stood down by Arthur and Clarke for the third Test against India in Mohali in 2013 in the so-called homework affair. No, I didnt say that, Clarke said. I said that there is a number of players, or a group in this team at the moment that are like a tumour, and if we dont fix it, its going to turn into a cancer.Asked if Watson was one of them Clarke replied: Shane was one of those players, yes.He admitted the run-in with Katich caused a divide between him and the older players.I think a lot of us were getting wound up, so I think I had every reason to be pissed off, Clarke said. But I dont think my language was appropriate to Kato (Katich). It turned out -- I found out four days later -- that Matthew Hayden was going to retire after that Test match. So I think Haydos was pissed off as well that that happened in his last Test.Clarke who retired after the Ashes last year, said some of his problems started when he was appointed vice-captain to Ricky Ponting.I dont think I was a good vice-captain at all, he told the programme. As soon as I got given the vice-captaincy, I think the perception was I was automatically the next captain, and that built. The former skipper admits he struggled with the public perception of his personality.I hated not knowing why people didnt like me or why the media perception was they didnt like me, Clarke said. The negative stuff I would read, and I felt like I was reading it in bold letters. You know, youre selfish, you dont care about the team, youre an upstart - that was hard to deal with.

Assange's internet cut by 'state party': WikiLeaks

Posted:

LONDON: (AFP) - WikiLeaks on Monday accused a state party of cutting the internet connection of its founder Julian Assange, claiming the connectivity problem was related to the groups publication of documents related to US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.Julian Assanges internet link has been intentionally severed by a state party. We have activated the appropriate contingency plans, WikiLeaks said on Twitter. The anti-secrecy website subsequently told AFP it was aware of the state concerned but did not name the nation it suspected of cutting Assanges internet connection. It relates to our ongoing publications revealing the associations and positions of US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, a WikiLeaks spokesperson told AFP.Three of Clintons paid speeches to Goldman Sachs were released by WikiLeaks on Saturday, followed by the publication of further documents on Monday.Clintons campaign did not contest the authenticity of the remarks, part of a huge trove of documents hacked from the emails of campaign chairman John Podesta by WikiLeaks. The campaign has blamed the Russian government for the hacks, a view shared by the US government, and accused the anti-secrecy website of seeking to help Clintons Republican rival for the presidency Donald Trump.Assange has spent more than four years living in Ecuadors embassy in London, to avoid arrest and extradition to Sweden over an allegation of rape. The 45-year-old Australian and his supporters believe the allegation is a guise to have Assange extradited from Stockholm to the US where he could be tried for publishing government secrets.
