Real Madrid to appeal against EU ruling on 'illegal aid'

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid said Tuesday it would appeal against an EU decision requiring the club to repay 18.4 million euros ($20.39 million) in alleged illegal aid from a land deal.We are going to file an appeal, and I am absolutely convinced we will win, Real president Florentino Perez told a press conference. The case has put the European Unions powerful executive on collision course with the 11-times European champions and one of the worlds wealthiest clubs. The European Commission accuses Real and Madrid city council -- which at the time was run by the conservative Popular Party -- of illegal payment related to the sale of a plot of municipal land.In 1998, the club paid the city 595,000 euros for the land but the deal ultimately fell through because of technical problems. In 2011, the city paid Real 22.7 million euros in compensation.According to an assessor hired by the Commission, this figure was over-stated by a massive 18.4 million euros and thus amounted to illicit aid.Perez, who was speaking at a presentation of Reals plans to modernise the Bernabeu stadium, dismissed the far lower valuation of the property. Its meaningless when you see its been carried out by a company from Barcelona that furthermore is tiny and not an expert, he argued.Theres nothing in this case, Perez said. We are going to file an appeal against the European Commissions assessment.Since 2015, city hall was been run by the left. On August 29, it said it would pursue Madrid for payment of the 18.4 million.

Bravo ready for pink ball challenge against Pakistan

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - West Indian batsman Darren Bravo vowed to give his best shot on the challenge of facing a newly introduced pink ball in the day-night Test against Pakistan starting in Dubai on Thursday. The 27-year-old left-hander smashed an attractive 91 in the West Indies drawn three-day game against Pakistan Cricket Board Patrons XI in Sharjah on Sunday, also played with the pink ball as a day-night affair.Bravo admitted batsmen could not pick up the seam of the pink ball but said the challenge was exciting. Most of the guys were complaining that they were not able to pick up the seam that well, Bravo said on Tuesday. We need to accept the challenge as quickly as possible and go out and give it our best shot. The day-night Test with a pink ball will only be the second in Test crickets 140-year-old history, following the Australia-New Zealand encounter under the same conditions at Adelaide in November last year. The manufacturers of the Kookaburra ball admitted they have changed the seam of the pink ball from dark green and white -- on the balls used in Adelaide -- to a black that was subsequently trialled in first class cricket with improved visibility.Bravo pointed out that batting under lights on a pink ball is difficult.I think when we play in the lights the ball turns more than in the sunshine and thats the difficult time to bat.But its a good experience and the more time you spend in the middle it becomes easier, said Bravo, who backed day-night Tests. They (administrators) are trying the day-night Tests to encourage people to come, they can come after their work and have time to bring their families and thats a positive. Lets hope people come and support Test cricket once more.Bravo admitted West Indies were poor in the preceding Twenty20 and one-day series where they were whitewashed by Pakistan 3-0.Quite honestly, by all means we didnt really perform well in the shorter formats of the game and we are disappointed about that but in the Tests we will try our best to put in much better performance. The guys have worked hard and we are very excited about this Test with the pink ball and then the last two with the normal red ball, said Bravo. The remaining two Tests will be played in Abu Dhabi from October 21-25 and Sharjah from October 30 to November 3.

Don't rule out Federer, Nadal, says Djokovic

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Novak Djokovic said Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal still rate among the worlds best on Tuesday after they both dropped out of the top four for the first time in 13 years.Djokovic said it would be unwise to omit Federer and Nadal from an assessment of the worlds top players despite a new wave of talent which is fast closing on the elite ranks. This weeks updated ATP tennis rankings are missing both Federer, 35, and Nadal, 30, who have 31 Grand Slam titles between them, for the first time since 2003.Its kind of expected to have some new faces in this sport, but I still wouldnt rule out Roger and Rafa and I would not take them out of that context of the best players in the world, Djokovic said at the Shanghai Masters. He said he had never used the term Big Four, used to group himself, Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray, who have dominated the rankings and major tournaments for a decade.Djokovic pointed to Stan Wawrinka, who has won three major titles in the past three seasons, and former US Open champions Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro. And now you have the new wave of tennis players, a new generation is coming up, he said, singling out Australias Nick Kyrgios and the 19-year-old Croatian, Borna Coric.Kyrgios and Coric, these kind of players that are young and motivated to show to the world that they can compete on the highest level, Djokovic said.Twenty-somethings Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem are all in the top 10, while Kyrgios and Lucas Pouille are also on the march and are already in the top 20.Federer, who is missing the end of the season with injury, has dropped to seventh in the latest rankings, while Nadal is down in fifth.

Kohli receives No. 1 mace after India top Test rankings

INDORE, India (AFP) - Skipper Virat Kohli was on Tuesday presented with the ICC Test Championship mace as India were officially crowned the number one side after their 3-0 thrashing of New Zealand.India, who had reclaimed the top spot in the world Test rankings after taking an unassailable 2-0 series lead in Kolkata, won the third and final Test by 321 runs Tuesday to consolidate their position.Batting legend and ICC Hall of Famer Sunil Gavaskar presented Kohli with the mace on behalf of the International Cricket Council at Indores Holkar Stadium.Kohli was only the second India captain after Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the 10th overall to receive the mace since its introduction in 2001.The others are Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Steve Smith (Australia), Andrew Strauss (England), Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla (South Africa) and Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan).India are now four points in the ratings above arch-rivals Pakistan, who enjoyed the top spot only briefly after Misbah received the mace last month in Lahore.Ive got a few Man of the Match awards, so have the boys. This is much more special. The last time India got the mace, I was watching on TV, said a delighted Kohli. The key right now is maintaining our game. Were working really hard on the areas needing improvement and weve been able to correct the wrongs quickly and wed like to continue that and give the people what they want to see.India had replaced Australia at the top of the rankings after their series win against the West Indies in August, only to be leapfrogged by Pakistan later. The number-one ranking has changed hands three times in as many months, indicative of the current competitiveness of Test cricket, ICC chief executive Dave Richardson was quoted as saying in a release.

Football: Uzbeks outclass China to take charge of group

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Chinas bid to qualify for the 2018 World Cup suffered a crushing blow after they were outclassed 2-0 by Uzbekistan in a crucial Group A Asian qualifier on Tuesday. The Chinese, who have invested heavily in football and also plan to bid for the 2030 World Cup, came apart in Tashkent with Uzbekistan scoring twice in the second half through Marat Bikaev and Otabek Shukurov.Tuesdays victory put the Uzbeks in command of their group with three wins from four matches, while China languish in fifth place with only a point to show for their efforts so far.The Central Asians, who have never featured in the quadrennial sporting showpiece, raised their game in the second half and opened their account through Bikmaev in the 50th minute, the Lokomotiv Tashkent forward blasting the ball home after playmaker Eldor Shomurodov had split the Chinese defence with a brilliant pass. The Uzbeks dictated the game thereon and came close to scoring again moments later, but Igor Sergeevs shot crashed back off the post. But with five minutes remaining, the hosts wrapped up their much deserved three points after substitute Shukurovs speculative effort took a lucky deflection off Zhang Chengdong and rolled into the net.Uzbekistan could have boosted their tally in injury time only for Jaloliddin Masharipovs shot to ricochet off the post, but the hosts were not complaining as they established themselves as genuine contenders for a Russia 2018 spot.Iran claimed a sombre 1-0 win over South Korea to jump to the top of Group A.Irans defensive minded approach in the qualifiers has worked wonders and they have not conceded a single goal in four matches. After a couple of unsuccessful forays by Iran, the Korean goal fell in the 25th minute when Ramin Rezaein found himself left with space behind defender Oh Jae-suk before firing in a low ball towards Sardar Azmoun and the Rostov forward scored with his first-time effort. The frustrated Koreans couldnt even manage a decent shot at goal and the result leaves them with plenty of food for thought before tackling Uzbekistan next month.Qatar pipped Syria 1-0 for their first win, lifting them off the bottom of Group A.Hasan al-Haydos struck from the penalty spot in the 37th minute after he was brought down by Zahir al-Medani as the 2022 hosts revived their slim chances following three straight defeats.Earlier in Melbourne, Australia came from behind through a Mile Jedinak penalty to grab a 1-1 draw against Japan to remain unbeaten in Group B.The Blue Samurai rocked the Socceroos with a fifth-minute goal from midfielder Genki Haraguchi but skipper Jedinak retrieved a point in a tense game with his spot kick.We regrouped at halftime and we were told to have a reaction. There looked like only one team winning the game, it was unfortunate we didnt get that second goal, said Jedinak.Japan struck early after defender Trent Sainsbury gave away possession and Keisuke Honda released Haraguchi to advance on the Australian goal.Haraguchi slid the ball through the legs of the advancing Matt Ryan to give the Blue Samurai the shock early lead. But Australia grabbed a lifeline shortly after the resumption when Haraguchi brought down Tomi Juric for a penalty which skipper Jedinak rammed home to equalise. Also in Group B, Iraq notched their first win, 4-0 over Thailand, with Mohannad Abdulraheem stealing the show by scoring all four goals.Abdulraheem struck twice in each half against the hapless Thais but having suffered defeats against Japan, Australia and Saudi Arabia earlier, the Iraqis will need a miracle to make it to Russia.

Poor England held in Slovenia as Germany coast

PARIS (AFP) - England laboured to a 0-0 draw away to Slovenia on Tuesday in their 2018 World Cup qualifier with Wayne Rooney dropped to the bench, while title-holders Germany remained firmly on course for the finals.Manchester City reject Joe Hart produced three terrific saves to deny Roman Bezjak, Josip Ilicic and Jasmin Kurtic, who also hit the post, as Gareth Southgates inexperienced side clung on desperately for a point in Ljubljana to remain top of Group F.Jesse Lingards fierce long-range strike forced Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak into a sharp stop late on as the stalemate ensured both countries maintained their unbeaten starts to the campaign. Its my best game for a while but it was down to a few errors from us, said Hart, who kept a third successive clean sheet in qualifying. We have to improve but we are trying to qualify for Russia. My body is in pieces, Ill struggle to get up tomorrow, added Hart, who has been shunted out on loan to Torino in Serie A.England moved on to seven points after three matches, two more than Slovenia and Lithuania, who defeated 10-man Malta 2-0 in Vilnius.Slovakia registered their first points with a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland in Trnava where Robert Mak scored twice before Adam Nemec capped off a miserable evening for Gordon Strachans visitors. In Hanover, defending champions Germany swept aside Northern Ireland 2-0 with first-half goals from Julian Draxler and Sami Khedira sending Joachim Loews men two points clear in Group C and looking ominous.Weve done our job, taking six points (this past week) and not conceding any goals, said Loew. We scored our two goals very early and that allowed us to win without suffering.Azerbaijan extended their undefeated run with a hard-fought point in a goalless draw in the Czech Republic, Robert Prosineckis team a surprise second in the standings following their shock defeat of Norway at the weekend. The Norwegians were in danger of another highly embarrassing result at home to San Marino before three goals in the final 13 minutes eased tensions in Oslo as the hosts won 4-1.Robert Lewandowski snatched a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Poland overcome 10-man Armenia 2-1 in Warsaw.Hrayr Mkoyans own goal just after the break gifted Poland the lead, but Armenia, who played a man down for an hour after the dismissal of Gael Andonian, levelled two minutes later through Marcos Pizzelli. However, Lewandowski scored for the eighth straight qualifier as he headed in deep into injury time to keep Poland level on points with Group E leaders Montenegro, 1-0 winners in Denmark.Romania are two points off the pace following a 0-0 draw with Kazakhstan in Astana.

Donald Trump lashes out at 'disloyal' Republicans

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Embattled presidential hopeful Donald Trump lashed out against disloyal Republicans in a ranting tweetstorm Tuesday, deepening a split that threatens the future of the 162-year-old party.Declaring himself unchained from party strictures, the White House nominee berated Republican leaders for offering him zero support and promised a bareknuckle 28-day campaign against Hillary Clinton.Trump ridiculed the partys 2008 White House nominee John McCain as very foul mouthed. He called Paul Ryan, the nations top elected Republican, a weak and ineffective leader. It is so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to, Trump said in a three-hour cyber outburst. I will teach themRelations between Trump and party leaders have always been strained -- from the outset many considered the bombastic reality-TV-star-turned-politico unfit to take up the mantle of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan. But the snapping point has been Trumps precipitous fall in the polls after the emergence of a video in which he bragged about groping women. The White House on Tuesday condemned Trumps on-mic boast as repugnant, with spokesman Josh Earnest saying most people would consider the actions described as sexual assault.Trump has apologized for the comments, saying they were just locker-room banter. The latest Real Clear Politics polling average has Clinton ahead by six points across the country, and the latest polls show her ahead in a slew of must-win states for Trump. With his campaign in a tailspin, Trump seemed determined to ram a wedge between party leaders and the radicalized grassroots that propelled his political career. For much of Barack Obamas eight years in the White House, the Republican leadership has struggled to keep hardliners inside the tent. Now Trump is fueling an intra-party war, with streams of Republicans saying they will vote for Clinton and Trump fans vowing to bring down Congressional leaders like Ryan and McCain.Trumps anger seems to have been prompted by Ryan suggesting that fellow Republicans stop defending the party nominee and focus on limiting electoral losses in Congress. In a conference call on Monday, Ryan told congressional Republicans you all need to do whats best for you in your district, according to one person who listened in.But Trumps belligerent reaction is an ominous sign for Republicans worried about losing control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.Disloyal Rs are far more difficult than Crooked Hillary. They come at you from all sides. They dont know how to win -- I will teach them Trump tweeted.Trumps campaign has long had a no holds barred quality but the break with Republicans signals the start of an even more vitriolic campaign.Trump has also alienated allies by bringing up unproven sexual abuse allegations against Clintons husband, former president Bill Clinton, in a debate Sunday watched by tens of millions of Americans. The last few days have seen Hillary Clintons speeches interrupted by people shouting Bill Clinton is a rapistA right-wing website has offered $5,000 to anyone who goes to a rally and does the same.An unsparing Trump campaign ad released Monday showed Hillary Clinton when she had pneumonia last month, coughing at a dais and stumbling as she tried to get into her motorcade after a 9/11 anniversary ceremony.Hillary Clinton doesnt have the fortitude, strength or stamina to lead in our world, the narrator says. Also Monday, Trump suggested to a mostly white audience in Philadelphia, which has a large African-American population, that the election may be stolen by other communities.Clintons campaign will be eager to tether the whole Republican Party to Trumps harsh message -- which is popular with the party base but appears to have little appeal with the wider public.Somewhat of a civil war is breaking out in the Republican Party, said Clinton communications director Jen Palmieri. But I think that Donald Trump didnt become the nominee of his party on his own.She accused elected Republicans of helping to legitimize him, adding, I think they have a lot to answer for and the voters I imagine will hold them accountable (in) House and Senate races.Clinton revived the Clinton-Gore 1992 White House ticket on Tuesday, campaigning in Miami with her husbands vice president Al Gore.Gore has been largely absent from politics since he lost the 2000 race in Florida to George W. Bush by a handful of votes. In Miami he focused on the high stakes of Novembers election. Your vote really, really, really counts. You can consider me as Exhibit A.Clinton will have another potent surrogate on the campaign trail Tuesday when President Barack Obama travels to Greensboro, North Carolina.
