Russia veto France's resolution demanding an end to Aleppo bombing

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS, United States (AFP) - Russia on Saturday vetoed a UN draft resolution demanding an end to the bombing of Aleppo, but its own rival measure on a truce in Syrias war-battered city was rejected. The failure of the two resolutions deepened divisions at the Security Council between Damascus ally Moscow and the Western powers backing opposition rebels in the war.It was the fifth time that Russia used its veto to block UN action to end the five-year war in Syria, which has claimed 300,000 lives. As the council meeting got underway, the Syrian regime pressed its assault on rebel-held areas of Aleppo, where 125,000 people are living under siege and facing almost-daily heavy bombing.French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault urged the council to take immediate action to save Aleppo from being destroyed by the Russia-backed Syrian bombing campaign. What is at stake today is first and foremost the fate of Aleppo and its people, Ayrault told the council. But its more than that -- its the hope of establishing at last an end to a conflict for which we are all, all of us, paying the catastrophic consequences.Ayrault said the council must demand immediate action in order to save Aleppo. In a message directed at Russia, Ayrault said any country that opposes the French measure will give Bashar al-Assad the possibility of killing even more. The draft resolution presented by France called for an end to all military flights over Aleppo and to the aerial bombardments that have escalated since the Syrian army launched an offensive last month. It won 11 votes in favor in the 15-member Security Council, but Russia and Venezuela voted against. China, which had in the past backed Russia to block resolutions on Syria, abstained, as did Angola.Shortly after the Russian veto, the Security Council rejected the rival draft presented by Moscow by a vote of nine against, four in favour and two abstentions.Britain, France and the United States voted against the Russian measure that called for a ceasefire but did not mention a halt in the air strikes.Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who holds the council presidency, said the two votes represented one of the strangest spectacles at the Security Council because all 15 members knew from the outset that they would fail. This waste of time is inadmissible, said Churkin.British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft described it as a bad day for Russia, but an even worse day for the people of Aleppo.China, Egypt, Russia and Venezuela voted in favor of the Russian measure, while Angola and Uruguay abstained.Following the meeting, Churkin insisted that diplomatic efforts on Syria were not dead. No, no, no, he said when asked if this was the end of diplomacy on Syria. Its just the end of one very weird meeting of the Security Council. The Syrian and Russian bombing campaign has escalated since the Russian-backed Syrian army launched an offensive to retake the city on September 22.Since the regime offensive began a few days after a US- and Russian-brokered ceasefire collapsed, at least 290 people -- mostly civilians -- have been killed in rebel-held areas, 57 them children, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. And 50 civilians including nine children have been killed in rebel shelling on regime-held areas of the city, according to the Britain-based monitoring group, which relies on a network of sources on the ground. It said government forces were making further advances on Saturday ahead of the Security Council session. The battle is unfolding in the center, particularly in the Bustan al-Basha district where the army is advancing, in Sheikh Said in the south, and on the northern outskirts where the regime has taken the Uwaija neighborhood, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.The monitor reported heavy air strikes on the rebel-held Fardos and Sukari neighborhoods. An AFP correspondent said the raids mostly hit combat zones in the city.German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned that the mounting tensions between Washington and Moscow over the conflict had created a situation more dangerous than the Cold War.Its a fallacy to think that this is like the Cold War, Steinmeier said in an interview published by Bild newspaper. The current times are different and more dangerous.

More than 140 killed in airstrikes on Yemen funeral

Posted:

SANAA (AFP) - More than 140 people were killed and more than 525 wounded Saturday when air strikes hit a funeral ceremony in Yemen, a United Nations official said, with Huthi rebels blaming the attack on the Saudi-led coalition. The coalition, which has come under increasing international scrutiny over alleged civilian deaths, denied any responsibility for the attack. The toll is very high: more than 520 wounded and more than 100 martyrs, the spokesman of the health ministry in Sanaa, Tamim al-Shami, told rebel Almasirah television. It was one of the deadliest attacks since the coalition launched a bombing campaign against the Shiite Huthis in March 2015.Riyadhs key ally Washington promptly warned it had launched an immediate review of support to the Saudi-led coalition, and that its security cooperation with Saudi Arabia was not a blank check. The UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, said aid workers were shocked and outraged by the attacks that hit a community hall in the capital Sanaa where mourners had gathered. He called for an immediate investigation and said the international community must exert pressure to ensure civilians are protected. This violence against civilians in Yemen must stop immediately, said McGoldrick. In September 2015, a suspected coalition air strike killed at least 131 civilians at a wedding near the Red Sea city of Mokha. The Saudi-led alliance then also denied any involvement. And in March this year, Saudi-led air strikes on a market killed at least 119 people, including 106 civilians, of which 24 were children, in the northern rebel-held province of Hajja. On Saturday, emergency workers pulled out at least 20 charred remains and body parts from the gutted building in southern Sanaa as others scoured the wreckage for survivors. Some of the wounded had their legs torn off and were being treated on the spot by volunteers, he said.In a statement to AFP, the Saudi-led coalition said it had no operations at the location and other causes for the incident must be considered. The coalition has in the past avoided such gatherings and (they) have never been a subject of targeting, it said. The insurgent-controlled news site sabanews.net said coalition planes hit after hundreds had gathered to mourn the death of the father of rebel interior minister Jalal al-Rowaishan and denounced the massacre. The Huthis did not say if Rowaishan was present in the building at the time of the attack, nor did they indicate if other senior figures were attending the funeral.Almasirah said Sanaa mayor Abdel Qader Hilal was among those killed. The attack could further sour already strained US-Saudi ties.We are deeply disturbed by reports of todays air strike on a funeral hall in Yemen, which, if confirmed, would continue the troubling series of attacks striking Yemeni civilians, White House National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said in a statement. In light of this and other recent incidents, we have initiated an immediate review of our already significantly reduced support to the Saudi-led Coalition and are prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with US principles, values and interests, including achieving an immediate and durable end to Yemens tragic conflict.Price stressed that US security cooperation with Saudi Arabia is not a blank check, and called on all sides to implement an immediate ceasefire. The Iran-backed Huthis swept into Sanaa in September 2014 and advanced across much of Yemen, forcing the internationally recognized government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi to flee.More than 6,700 people -- most of them civilians -- have been killed in Yemen since the coalition intervened in support of Hadi, according to the United Nations.Fighting has flared since UN-brokered peace talks between the government and insurgents collapsed in August.People had come from all over Sanaa to attend the funeral, said Mulatif al-Mojani, who witnessed the latest air strikes.A plane fired a missile and minutes later another plane hit the building where they had gathered, he told AFP.Another witness, who declined to give his name, angrily described the attack as a war crime. This was a funeral for one man in Sanaa and now it has turned into a funeral for tens of Yemenis, he said.Ambulance sirens blared as they transported the wounded away and residents said local hospitals had issued an appeal for blood donations. The coalition has come under mounting international criticism in recent months over the civilian death toll in its aerial campaign.A diplomatic source told AFP that intensified coalition bombing aims to break the rebels but warned that this will not work.A UN report in August said coalition air strikes are suspected of causing around half of all civilian deaths in Yemen. It called for an independent international body to investigate an array of serious violations by all sides, after 4,000 civilians have been killed.European states led by the Netherlands were defeated last week in a push to establish that inquiry. The coalition has told AFP it uses highly accurate laser- and GPS-guided weapons and verifies targets many times to avoid civilian casualties. The so-called supreme political council set up by the Huthis and their allies -- supporters of ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh -- vowed to use all means to respond to this crime and urged Yemenis to protest outside UN offices in Sanaa on Sunday. In addition to the mounting death toll, Yemenis are facing twin health and hunger crises. The UNs children agency UNICEF estimates that three million people are in need of immediate food supplies, while 1.5 million children suffer malnutrition. On Friday, it also reported cases of cholera in Sanaa and third city Taez.

Johanna Konta becomes first British woman in 32 years to reach top 10

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Johanna Konta became the first British woman in 32 years to break into the top 10, after she beat Madison Keys to reach the final of the China Open on Saturday.Andy Murray is also through to the final in Beijing -- his ninth final of the season -- after downing Spaniard David Ferrer 6-2, 6-3.The Scot will face Grigor Dimitrov, who got a free pass when Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic withdrew from their semi-final match with an ankle injury.Konta put in a solid performance to advance to the biggest final of her career, beating eighth-ranked Keys 7-6 (7/1), 4-6, 6-4.After a tight first set, Keys serve let her down in the tiebreaker but she rallied in the second despite continued pressure from the Briton.Konta demanded seven set points from Keys for the second set and then stepped up her game in the third, keeping the American on the defensive to take her a step closer to her second season -- and career -- title.I dont think she made a lot of unforced errors or gave me a lot of balls to be able to get on the offense, Keys told reporters after the match.Konta, 25, burst onto the scene at last years US Open where she reached the round of 16, claiming two top 20 scalps along the way.She has gone up another gear this season, becoming the first British woman to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in 33 years at the Australian Open and reaching the quarter-finals at the Rio Olympics. The win in the Chinese capital is yet another one for the record books: she will be the first British woman to break into the top 10 since Jo Durie in 1984 when the new rankings are released Monday.Durie, who reached a career high of five, tweeted her congratulations after the match: Congrats to @JoKonta91 a fantastic year & thoroughly deserves the Top Ten ranking. More to come Im sure.Although typically focused Konta was quick to put aside thoughts of her top 10 achievement, she admitted that breaking another of Duries records felt good.I know Ive achieved something good whenever Im mentioned in the same sentence as her (Durie), Konta said. There was a lot on the line for both Konta and Keys as they chase points to qualify for the first time for the eight-player season finale in Singapore.Konta moves into eighth spot with the semi-final win, while Keys remains in seventh position, but with two weeks to go before the tournament both could be nudged out.Konta will face third-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska in Sundays final, after she beat Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 in the semis.Svitolina -- who upset world number one Angelique Kerber in the third round -- recovered from 3-0 in the second set but was unable to close the gap on the 2011 China Open champion.Meanwhile Raonic pulled out of his semi-final match a few hours before it was due to start.Yesterday during my second match in the evening... I rolled over my ankle, obviously caused it some level of a sprain, Raonic told reporters. The sixth-ranked 25-year-old has been stalked by injuries all season, costing him the chance to bag his first Grand Slam title. He was two sets up to Murray in the Australian Open semis when he suffered a thigh injury, eventually losing in five. The big-serving Canadian was also tipped to make a run for the crown at Flushing Meadows, but fell in the second round after again injuring himself on court.Murray made quick work of Ferrer for a place in the finals. The Spaniard had lost his previous six matches against Murray and failed to get a look in after the Scot went two breaks up in the first set.

Ton-up Kohli steers India to 267/3 against New Zealand

Posted:

INDORE, India (AFP) - Skipper Virat Kohli struck form with a gritty century as India ended the opening days play on a commanding 267 for three against New Zealand in the third and final Test in Indore on Saturday. The hosts, who elected to bat first, rode on an unbeaten 167-run partnership between Kohli (103) and Ajinkya Rahane(79) to gain control of the innings after early losses.Kohli recorded his 13th Test ton in 48 matches after a string of low scores in his last seven innings since his first Test double hundred against West Indies in July. The top-order batsman, who tackled the New Zealand bowlers with excellent footwork, hit the ball to all parts of the Holkar Stadium.Rahane, who seemed to gain confidence from the free-flowing Kohli at the other end, brought up his fifty -- the tenth of his Test career -- with a six off Jeetan Patel.Virat played a very good innings and got the first century (from either side) in the series and Ajinkya too batted well, number three batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored 41, told reporters.Their partnership was crucial and if it carries on tomorrow it will be good for us, Pujara said. The 27-year-old Kohli worked hard in the initial part of his innings but grew in stature after getting past fifty and his assured stroke-making soon dominated the New Zealand bowling.Kohli tapped a rising delivery from Matt Henry to run a quick single that saw a direct hit at the non-strikers end but the star batsman scampered home and celebrated his hundred.New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who returned to lead the side after missing the second Test with a viral infection, juggled his bowling options but Kohli and Rahane held fort. The hosts did not lose a single wicket in the space of 34 overs in the final session as the batting duo entertained the raucous home crowd. We will try to bat as long as possible. The kind of position we are in, we will look to get 400 and if we dont lose quick wickets tomorrow and continue like we are doing, we will keep batting. We hope for a big total and when our spinners bowl we expect some more help from the wicket on day two and three, said Pujara.Earlier in post-lunch play number-three Pujara was bowled off a beauty by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner for 41. He had put on 40 runs with Kohli.India lost both its openers in the morning session with returning Gautam Gambhir (29), who was playing Test cricket after a two-year gap, letting go of a good start.Pace spearhead Trent Boult cut short Gambhirs breezy knock, which was studded with three fours and two sixes, after trapping the left-handed batsman lbw on an incoming delivery.Boult, Santner and Patel, who struck first after sending back Murali Vijay for 10, shared a wicket apiece in the 90 overs of play.New Zealand allrounder James Neesham, who was added to the starting lineup in place of Neil Wagner, said the visitors were in with a chance provided they strike early on day two.I dont know if we could have done it a whole lot different with the ball, stuck at it well...Keeping the run rate below three was a good achievement. Couple of quick wickets tomorrow were still in game, said Neesham on Saturday. The hosts, who took a 2-0 lead after winning the second Test in Kolkata on Monday, have set their sights on a whitewash against the tourists.

Stokes relishes role as England vice-captain after Bangladesh win

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - England cricketer Ben Stokes said he was relishing his role as vice-captain after his brief team-talk during an injury break helped the visitors regroup and beat Bangladesh by 21 runs in Fridays first one-day international.Bangladesh, replying to Englands 309-8, appeared to be coasting towards their target with opener Imrul Kayes (112) clubbing a century and racking up a 118-run partnership with all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. But Kayes suffered a muscle cramp while batting on 81, halting the game for a few minutes and allowing Stokes to call his team-mates and hold a brief talk.England captain Jos Buttler in the post-match press conference said Stokes words were the catalyst in helping the team claw their way back into the contest.Debutant pace bowler Jake Ball provided the twist soon with two wickets in two balls as he removed Shakib for 79 and then bowled young Mosaddek Hossain off the next ball to trigger a collapse.England claimed the last six wickets for 17 runs to dismiss Bangladesh finally for 288 runs in 47.5 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The two guys were in and they were going to win it unless we got them out, Stokes told reporters in Dhaka on Saturday.A talk like that switches everyone back on rather than thinking oh this game is going to go unless we get a wicket. After that, everyone went away and thought, right, lets get two and try to kill the game off.The 25-year old, who set up Englands total with 101 off 100 balls, his maiden ODI century, said he was always ready to reduce the workload of new captain Buttler, who has been standing in for regular skipper Eoin Morgan in the three-match series.Farby (assistant coach Paul Farbrace) mentioned to me how much Jos has on his plate as keeper and captain, said Stokes. He gave me the freedom of, if I think of something, rather than going to Jos, if I think that its necessary then Ill go and talk it through with the bowler, or if there are any field placing.England play Bangladesh in the second one-day international at the same Dhaka venue on Sunday. The two teams move to Chittagong for the third and final match of the series on October 12.

Trump vows not to quit race over lewd talk about women

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Donald Trump rejected calls that he step aside as the Republican presidential nominee over lewd videotaped remarks about women, telling The Wall Street Journal on Saturday there is zero chance Ill quit.I never, ever give up, the newspaper quoted Trump as saying following calls by some Republicans that he quit the race after being caught in a 2005 videotape boasting of groping womens genitals with impunity. The videotape, released Friday by The Washington Post, forced a rare apology from Trump on the eve of a crucial debate with Democrat Hillary Clinton, and set off an uproar in his Republican party.Anyone who knows me knows these words dont reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize, Trump said early Saturday in a videotaped statement posted on his Twitter account. It was believed to be the first apology of his 16-month White House campaign, one peppered by controversies over his treatment of women. But Trump then undercut his words, calling the disclosure a distraction, defiantly attacking the Clintons for husband Bill Clintons past infidelities, and hinting strongly he would have more to say on the topic in Sundays debate in St Louis, Missouri. We will discuss this more in the coming days. See you at the debate on Sunday, he said.In The Wall Street Journal interview, Trump denied his campaign was in crisis, and predicted the controversy would blow over. The support Im getting is unbelievable, because Hillary Clinton is a horribly flawed candidate, he said.On Twitter, he said: Certainly has been an interesting 24 hoursRepublican reaction to the videotape came fast and furious, with some calling on him to step aside and others withdrawing their endorsement.Even Trumps running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, said that as a husband and father he was offended by Trumps remarks.I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them, he said in a statement, adding that Sunday nights debate was an opportunity for Trump to show what is in his heart.Trumps Republican critics want Pence, the vice presidential candidate, to replace the New York billionaire at the top of the ticket.Donald Trump should withdraw and Mike Pence should be our nominee effective immediately, said Senator John Thune, a member of the Republican leadership.House Speaker Paul Ryan, the top Republican officeholder, said he was sickened by what he had heard.Trump was supposed to appear Saturday with Ryan at a campaign event in the congressmans home state of Wisconsin, but the Republican nominee was disinvited. Pence was to go in his place, but he canceled.By Saturday, three senators, at least three members of the House of Representatives, and a former governor -- all Republicans -- had called on Trump to bow out of the White House race. Others withdrew their endorsements.I respectfully ask you, with all due respect, to step aside, urged Utah Senator Mike Lee.Illinois Senator Mark Kirk echoed the sentiment..@realDonaldTrump should drop out. @GOP should engage rules for emergency replacement, Kirk said on Twitter. With the November 8 elections one month away and Clinton leading in the polls by nearly five percentage points nationally, the latest uproar has plunged Trump in the deepest crisis of his turbulent campaign. He had already been seriously hurt by a sloppy performance in his first debate with Clinton on September 26, a damaging Twitter war against a former Miss Universe and reports he may have paid no income taxes for 18 years.Clinton, who is seeking to become the nations first female commander-in-chief, is almost certain to call out Trump about the videotape during the debate. This is horrific, she said on Twitter. We cannot allow this man to become president. In the video from 2005, Trump uses vulgar and predatory language as he describes hitting on a married woman and grabbing womens crotches. The three-minute video captures Trump reacting to an actress he was about to meet as he arrived on the set of daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives, for the taping of a segment in which he was to have a cameo appearance, the Post said.Ive gotta use some Tic Tacs (breath mints), just in case I start kissing her, Trump says to Billy Bush, then host of the Access Hollywood show about celebrities. You know Im automatically attracted to beautiful. I just start kissing them. Its like a magnet, he says.I dont even wait. And when youre a star they let you do it. You can do anything.Trump also is heard bragging about trying to have sex with a married woman.I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldnt get there. And she was married, Trump says. The tape was recorded months after Trump married his third wife, Melania, according to the Post.Ive never said Im a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone Im not, Trump said in his apology.I pledge to be a better man tomorrow.

England earn 2-0 win over Malta in Football World Cup qualifiers

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - First-half goals by Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli earned England a laboured 2-0 win over minnows Malta on Saturday in interim manager Gareth Southgates first game in charge.Southgate has stepped into the breach following the departure of Sam Allardyce, who was brought down by a newspaper sting, and saw his side secure a successive World Cup qualifying victory.Sturridge and Alli struck within nine minutes of each other at a nearly full but subdued Wembley, but England were unable to swell their lead despite monopolising possession and they were jeered late on as they ran out of ideas.I thought first half we played well. We could and should have scored more goals, Southgate said.Their goalkeeper made some good saves and subconsciously I think some of our players looked after themselves physically in the second half.We missed a couple of good chances, but given where we were 10 days ago, I am pleased with the result.Southgate, who handed a debut to Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard, also lost left-back Ryan Bertrand to injury. It increases the likelihood the former England Under-21s coach will call up reinforcements ahead of Tuesdays next Group F match in Slovenia.Southgate will also preside over Novembers qualifier against Scotland and friendly with Spain before the Football Association decides who will succeed Allardyce on a full-time basis.Maltas goalkeeper, Andrew Hogg, hails from London and it was no surprise he was a central figure on his return to the city of his birth. He was called into action for the first time in the eighth minute, plunging to his right to palm away a curling effort from Wayne Rooney.Rooney, deployed in central midfield, was upstaged by his midfield partner Jordan Henderson, whose enterprising running and incisive passing kept Malta on the back foot in the first half. His lofted pass freed Lingard, whose mishit half-volley flashed over, and he teed up Alli for a header that was parried by Hogg, with Sturridge wastefully blazing the rebound over.It was not all plain sailing for England.Bertrand was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury in the 19th minute, which saw Danny Rose come on, while Rooney was lucky to avoid sanction for an untidy challenge on Malta skipper Andre Schembri.England took the lead in the 29th minute with a goal made in Liverpool, Henderson swishing a cross into the box from deep and Sturridge steering a header inside the right-hand post.It was Sturridges 100th goal in professional football. After Hogg had denied Lingard and Gary Cahill sliced wide from a corner, England inflated their lead in the 38th minute.Southgates men circulated the ball patiently before Henderson lit the detonator, charging to the edge of the box and then ceding possession to Alli. The Tottenham Hotspur mans initial attempt was repelled by Hogg, but he followed in to prod home his second international goal.Hogg saved from Sturridge, twice, and tipped a Rooney free-kick over the bar early in the second half before sliding out to block from Theo Walcott, who had been slipped in by Lingard.Walcott and Sturridge gave way to Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy, the Manchester United youngster and Leicester City striker both getting rousing receptions from the home fans.Shy of a Lingard shot that flew wide, England struggled to create chances as the game wore on.Maltas Andrei Agius almost made things interesting with a late volley that England goalkeeper Joe Hart had to turn behind.Alli should have made the game safe when he was picked out by Rashford, but from barely six yards out he sent the ball over the bar.England are stronger than us, but we stayed in a good shape all the game, said beaten manager Pietro Ghedin. We saved a lot of chances. We suffered a lot, but we played a good game.
