Pound slides on Brexit talk; profit-taking hits US stocks

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The British pound slumped to a three-year low against the euro Monday after Prime Minister Theresa May said Brexit negotiations would begin by March. But Asian and European markets pushed higher helped by easing fears over Deutsche Banks travails, after Fridays late report that the German giant could settle its US toxic mortgage securities litigation problems for around $5.4 billion, instead of the $14 billion originally reported.US stocks, which had already counted in the Deutsche Bank news Friday, fell in profit-taking Monday. But tech titans Twitter and Netflix both surged more than four percent on takeover speculation. Disney has been mentioned as a possible acquirer for both companies, along with possibly Google and Salesforce in Twitters case.Sterling dropped to 87.46 pence against the euro, the lowest level since August 2013, after May gave more details Sunday about how Britain would exit the European Union. The pound also slid as low of as $1.2820 -- before recovering against both the dollar and euro. While the latest dip in sterling has partly reflected concerns over the prospect of a hard Brexit, the currencys depreciation should continue to cushion the economic impact of the vote to leave the EU, Capital Economics Jonathan Loynes said in an investors note.Yet better-than-expected British manufacturing data, in part due to the pounds weakness, helped lift Londons benchmark FTSE 100 stocks index by 1.2 percent. In a key indicator of the strength of the manufacturing sector, the Markit/CIPS UK manufacturing PMI (purchasing managers index) rose to its highest level since mid-2014, according to figures Monday. It is... apparent that sterlings marked weakening is giving an important lift to foreign demand for UK manufactured goods, said Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight. Before Sunday, May had only said that Britain would not trigger Article 50 of the EUs Lisbon Treaty -- which sets a two-year clock ticking until a countrys departure from the 28-member bloc -- before the end of this year. But putting a March date on the kickoff still leaves a huge number of details about the process and end result overhanging.Whilst markets welcome the update (from May), there is still a great degree of uncertainty surrounding what Brexit negotiations will involve, said Ana Thaker, a market economist at PhillipCapital UK.Among other markets, the Colombian peso fell to its lowest level since September 16 after voters rejected a peace deal between the government and communist FARC rebels.Oil prices continued to climb following last weeks tentative decision by OPEC to cut production when the group meets in November. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for November delivery gained 57 cents to $48.81 a barrel.

Azhar sees positive Pakistan progress

Posted:

SHARJAH (AFP) - Skipper Azhar Ali Monday said his team was heading in the right direction after a one-day series win over the West Indies which will lift their rankings and chances for a direct entry in the World Cup 2019. Pakistan took an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series with another thumping 59-run win in Sharjah on Sunday. They won the first game by 111 runs at the same venue on Friday. Pakistan, who play the last match in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, need to beat the West Indies 3-0 to rise one place to eighth, displacing their opponents (currently eighth) to ninth. Hosts England and the top seven teams in one-day rankings on the cut off date of September 30 next year will automatically qualify for the 2019 World Cup. The two remaining teams will join eight Associates to feature in the qualifying round in 2018. Ali said the series win put Pakistan in the right direction of rebuilding. It takes time to improve things. You need patience to lift a team. We started the rebuilding process after the 2015 World Cup and it takes one-and-a-half to two years so we are going towards that, said Ali. Ali replaced Misbah-ul-Haq who along with allrounder Shahid Afridi retired after the World Cup last year. But Pakistan were whitewashed 3-0 in Bangladesh last year in Alis first series as captain and lost 4-1 to England earlier this month. That raised calls for his sacking but Ali felt changes halted the teams progress. No matter how many captains you change if you want to rebuild the team it takes one-and-a-half to two years. Our nation doesnt have the patience, they want to win instantly. If you dont win they get frustrated and want change. As a nation we have to take responsibility. Its easy to look at things in hindsight and call for changes, said Ali. Ali said his team was getting right combinations. We are getting allrounders who have brought depth in batting and we are scoring 300 plus, said Ali whose team posted a big 337-5 in 50 overs on Sunday. We are executing plans in bowling which is good, energy levels are high and with wins you lift your confidence. We have played well in the last five to seven matches, said Ali of Pakistans three one-day and four Twenty20 wins this month. Dismissed for a first-ball duck and nine in the two matches against West Indies, Ali hopes he strikes form sooner than later. My series against England was better and I scored runs there. I am playing well in the nets so it will take one innings to come in form because my confidence level is high.

India may miss Champions Trophy: BCCI chief

Posted:

KOLKATA (AFP) - Indian cricket boss Anurag Thakur warned Monday that a key reform demanded by the countrys highest court may force India to miss next years Champions Trophy in England and Wales. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opposes a recommendation that would prevent cricket from being played up to 15 days after the cash-rich Indian Premier League finishes. The eight-team Champions Trophy begins on June 1, likely to be just days after the glitzy IPL final which is usually held in the last week of May.The 15-day window has been proposed to avoid player burnout, but the BCCI says the break will result in huge financial losses and difficulties in rescheduling a packed cricket calendar.I dont know whether India will be able to play Champions Trophy in England next year or not, Thakur told reporters in Kolkata during the second Test against New Zealand. As per the recommendations you have to give a 15-day window before and after IPL. There is Australia series before IPL and Champions Trophy after it.So BCCI has to take a call whether they will play IPL or Champions Trophy, Thakur added.Indias Supreme Court has ordered the BCCI to implement sweeping organisational reforms proposed by a panel headed by former chief justice Rajendra Mal Lodha. The BCCI -- one of the most powerful bodies in world sport -- rejected some of the reforms, including the 15-day window, at a special general meeting in Mumbai last week. The Supreme Court has accused the BCCI of behaving like lords and told them to fall in line.Thakur insisted reforms were being made after the IPL was dogged by match-fixing and corruption scandals, but warned of the financial impact. He said the BCCI would file a report to the Supreme Court for its next hearing due on October 6.He also dismissed any chance of a first bilateral series with Pakistan since 2012 and said the body was open to the use of the much-debated Decision Review System (DRS) in the future.Forget about playing Pakistan, first lets see whether we are able to play Champions Trophy or not. The chance of playing Pakistan only arises if we participate in Champions Trophy, said Thakur.DRS, which includes the Hawk-Eye ball-tracking technology, is optional for Test matches and only used if both sides agree to it. India is the only side that refuses to use the technology, designed to help umpires make the right call. Thakur said only when the system can be proved to be 100 percent foolproof would the BCCI reassess its stance. If that is satisfactory then BCCI is open to use DRS, he explained.

KOLKATA (AFP) - Indias Shikhar Dhawan was Monday ruled out of the third and final Test against New Zealand with a broken thumb after the hosts took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series in Kolkata. The 30-year-old left-handed opener suffered a nasty hit on his left thumb off a Trent Boult bouncer during Indias second innings on Sunday.Dhawan scored 17 after being trapped lbw off Boult and did not take the field during New Zealands run chase at Kolkatas Eden Gardens.Shikhar has suffered a very minor fracture on his hand (thumb). He has been under observation and advised a 15-day rest. So he is ruled out of the third match, the Indian teams management announced.Dhawan has scored 1,464 runs from 23 Tests at an average of 38.52.Indias selection committee named batsman Karun Nair, who has played just two one-day internationals for the national team, as Dhawans replacement. Indias emphatic 178-run win against New Zealand helped the hosts reclaim their top spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings. The two teams will now head to Indore for the final Test starting October 8.

India reclaims top Test spot after NZ-series win

Posted:

KOLKATA (AFP) - Indias bowlers propelled the hosts to a comprehensive 178-run win over New Zealand in the second Test Monday, to clinch the series and reclaim the top spot in the world rankings.Chasing 376 runs for victory, New Zealand were bowled out for 197 in the final session on the fourth day in Kolkata, with Indias Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja taking three wickets each.Shami claimed the final wicket of Trent Boult, sparking celebrations in the Indian team who take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, after winning the first Test in Kanpur. The victory also sees India jump back to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings after starting the series just one point behind archrivals Pakistan.Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who took five scalps in the first innings, shared 12 wickets between them on a two-paced track at Eden Gardens that offered the seam bowlers of both sides great help.India skipper Virat Kohli paid tribute to his bowlers, but also praised wicketkeeper and batsman Wriddhiman Saha, named man of the match for his unbeaten half-centuries in both innings against New Zealands aggressive seamers.Saha was brilliant, hes the best keeper in the country, hes doing a great job in Test cricket, Kohli said. That hundred in the West Indies really improved his confidence, he understands how to bat with the tail now, he said of Sahas recent performance in the Caribbean.Spinners also played a key role in Indias victory, with Ashwin breaking New Zealands opening stand just after lunch, trapping Martin Guptill lbw for 24. Tom Latham scored a gritty 74 before also falling to Ashwin soon after the tea break.Ashwin got Latham on a well-crafted off-spinner that pitched and spun away from the left-hander, who was caught behind.Lathams 49-run second-wicket partnership with Henry Nicholls had raised the visitors hopes of batting the day out, but Ashwins partner Jadeja soon joined forces.Jadeja claimed Nichollss wicket after his angled delivery got the edge of the New Zealanders bat for an easy catch at slips.Shami got some reverse swing towards the end of the day to rattle New Zealands middle-order with the wickets of Mitchell Santner and BJ Watling.Earlier India, who resumed the day on 227 for eight in their second innings, were bowled out for 263, with Saha scoring an unbeaten 58.The contributions of Saha, who scored an unbeaten 54 in the first innings, proved vital to India putting up decent totals.New Zealand pacers Boult, Matt Henry and Neil Wagner, who shared 14 wickets between them in the two innings, also enjoyed the seaming conditions.Very impressive, the way the bowlers got stuck in hot, humid conditions. We put India under pressure, but credit to them for withstanding it, said stand-in-skipper Ross Taylor.Indias pace duo of Shami and Kumar helped bowl out New Zealand for 204 in response to Indias 316 in the first innings.India secured a 112-run lead in the first innings that proved vital in outplaying the visitors, who lost regular skipper Kane Williamson to a viral infection just before the start of the match.Rohit Sharmas dominant 82 on Sunday gave India the upper hand in its 250th Test at home.I guess anytime you have a 112-run deficit, youre always under pressure. We got some early wickets, but the partnership between Saha and Rohit took it away from us, said Taylor.Half-centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara (87) and Ajinkya Rahane (77) in the first innings also ensured India made a solid start. The final Test will be played in Indore starting on October 8.
