South Africa make slow progress as New Zealand falter

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) – Dean Elgar punished New Zealand for an untidy day in the field as South Africa progressed slowly to a 124-run lead at tea on day four of the first Test in Dunedin.South Africa were 157 for three in their second innings with Elgar on 73 and Faf du Plessis on 16, having added only 119 runs in two sessions.Elgar brought up his half century with a cracking drive that went through the hands of substitute fielder Colin de Grandhomme at short cover in yet another missed opportunity for New Zealand. On a chilly day in which play was disrupted twice by rain and gloom, it was the third dropped catch in the innings while New Zealand also did not review a rejected lbw decision which would have earned a wicket.South Africa added one to their overnight 38 when Hashim Amla was dismissed before Elgar put on 74 with JP Duminy for the third wicket and an unbeaten 44 with Faf du Plessis. He was given out caught behind on the last ball before tea but that decision was overturned when replays showed the ball missed the bat.But there were fluffed chances by New Zealand with Duminy dropped by Tom Latham on six. On 20 he was given not out when hit on the back pad by Jeetan Patel which New Zealand did not review although the ball-tracker technology showed it was heading straight at leg stump.Meanwhile, two reviews New Zealand did make were both rejected and Elgar was dropped by wicketkeeper BJ Watling on 35.New Zealand went into the Test without Tim Southee in favour of two spinners, Jeetan Patel and Mitchell Santner but tended to use Santner sparingly.Patel had delivered 14 overs on day four before the left-arm Santner was brought into the attack.Amla was the only wicket to fall in the opening session, reaching 24 before he chipped Neil Wagner to substitute fielder Tim Southee at mid-wicket.Wagner trapped Duminy plumb in front in the sixth over after lunch for 39 with a ball that nipped back. The forecast is for cold but mainly fine weather for the remainder of the day but with heavy rain on Sunday.

Iraq forces advance in Mosul as IS resistance 'weakens'

Posted:

MOSUL (AFP) - Iraqi special forces battling the Islamic State group on Friday pushed deeper into west Mosul, where a commander said jihadist resistance is showing signs of weakening under repeated assaults. The jihadists are also facing simultaneous offensives in Syria by government forces, Turkish-backed rebels and a US-supported alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, piling more pressure on IS.But the battle for Mosuls Old City -- which could see some of the toughest fighting of the operation -- has not yet begun, nor has fighting inside the city of Raqa, ISs main bastion in Syria.Iraqs Counter-Terrorism Service attacked the Al-Amil al-Oula neighbourhood of west Mosul early on Friday, and were battling the jihadists inside it, said Staff Major General Maan al-Saadi, a CTS commander.Iraqs Joint Operations Command later announced that CTS had retaken that area along with another neighbourhood, Al-Amil al-Thaniyah.Saadi said that following a string of losses since the launch of the governments assault on west Mosul on February 19, IS resistance had diminished. After we broke the (first) defensive line, they lost many fighters, he said. The enemy has begun to collapse. They have lost many of their combat capabilities. Today, the enemy sent (suicide car bombs), but not in the numbers that they sent at the beginning of the battle. In another sign that the jihadists are feeling the squeeze, their chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reported to have abandoned Mosul, leaving local commanders behind to oversee defence of the city.Iraqi forces launched their operation to retake Mosul in October, and recaptured the whole east bank of the Tigris River that runs through it in January. They then set their sights on the smaller but more densely populated west side of the city.More than 215,000 people are displaced as a result of the battle for Mosul, according to the International Organization for Migration. Others fled their homes but later returned.Almost a quarter of the displaced -- more than 50,000 people -- have fled west Mosul since February 25, the IOM said. But that is only a small fraction of the 750,000 civilians estimated to have stayed on in west Mosul under IS rule.In neighbouring Syria, the jihadists lost more ground to a Russian-backed offensive by government forces east of second city Aleppo.Russian warplanes and regime aircraft and artillery pounded IS positions around Jarrah airbase, held by the jihadists since January 2014.Russias military said on Friday that it had carried out more than 450 air strikes in support of the offensive over the past week, killing more than 600 IS fighters, and destroying 16 infantry fighting vehicles and 41 machinegun-mounted pickups.Washington too has turned up the heat on IS in Syria, more than doubling its troop numbers in the country with the deployment of 400 reinforcements to back the offensive on Raqa.Around 500 US military advisers were already deployed alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters that Washington regards as the force best equipped to drive IS from its stronghold. But the operation is complicated by the implacable opposition to the SDF of US NATO ally Turkey, which is leading a rival offensive against IS in northern Syria.Ankara regards the dominant force within the SDF, the Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG), as a terrorist organisation, because of its links to a Kurdish rebel group that has waged a deadly 33-year insurgency in southeastern Turkey.Ankara has said its intervention is aimed as much against the YPG as IS, and there have been repeated clashes between Turkish forces and the Kurdish militia.Asked about the standoff at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, the top US commander for the region, General Joseph Votel, acknowledged that tensions between Ankara and the Kurds were near breaking point.Efforts have been made to address the issue at a military level, and there has to be an effort at the political level to address this, Votel said. Some of the US troop reinforcements being sent to Syria are to be deployed to SDF-held areas near the front line to deter further clashes between Turkish forces and Washingtons Kurdish-Arab allies.Relations between Ankara and Moscow, however, are much improved even though they have supported opposite sides in the conflict between the rebels and the regime.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was in Moscow on Friday for a new round of consultations with President Vladimir Putin.

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Seven people were killed including four Russians when a privately-owned helicopter crashed in Istanbul after hitting a television tower on Friday, local media reported, quoting the citys mayor.Seven people were killed in the accident. I would like to send my condolences to the loved ones and to the companies they belonged to, Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbas said, quoted by Hurriyet daily.Turkish media speculated that foggy weather may have caused the crash. Two pilots and five passengers were on board the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter owned by Turkish conglomerate Eczacibasi, the private Dogan news agency said.Bulent Eczacibasi, head of the conglomerate, said in televised comments that four Russian guests were on board the aircraft as well as a company executive. The Russian ministry of foreign affairs crisis centre confirmed on Twitter four Russian nationals were among the dead.Turkish media images showed the helicopter in pieces and thick black smoke as rescue teams continued their search in Buyukcekmece, a western district of Istanbul. The helicopter had taken off from the main Istanbul Ataturk airport at 11.16 am (0816 GMT) and four minutes later crashed after hitting a television tower, the Turkish transport ministry said, quoted by state-run news agency Anadolu. No one on the ground appeared to have been injured after the crash, the Buyukcekmece district mayor Hasan Akgun said.Istanbul has seen thick layers of fog in the past few days causing disruption to travel with flights and ferry services cancelled earlier this month. The crash came as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday in Moscow.

Air strike kills 26 in Yemen: medics, military sources

ADEN (AFP) - An air strike by a Saudi-led Arab coalition on a market in Yemen killed 20 civilians and six rebels on Friday, medical and military sources said. The aircraft tried to target rebels at a roadblock on the southern outskirts of the Red Sea port of Khokha, but the fighters fled to a market where they were attacked, the sources said. The raid took place at the entrance to the market that sells the mild narcotic leaf qat, which is very popular among Yemeni men.A military source close to Saudi-backed President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi said that by fleeing to the market, the rebels had used civilians as human shields. The rebel television channel Al-Masirah also reported the air strike, but give a slightly higher toll of 27 killed and said dozens more were wounded. The Saudi-led coalition which has been battling Shiite Huthi rebels opposed to Hadi was not immediately available for comment. The Arab force has come under repeated criticism over civilian casualties in Yemen. In December, it acknowledged that it had made limited use of British-made cluster bombs but said it had stopped using them.On Thursday, Amnesty International accused the coalition of using banned Brazilian-manufactured cluster munitions in raids on residential areas in northern Saada province, a Shiite stronghold. In mid-February, a coalition air strike killed eight women and a child at a funeral reception near the rebel-held Yemeni capital, Sanaa.Meanwhile, the rebel news agency Sabanews.net reported Friday that a coalition boat hit a mine off the coast of Yemens historic port of Mokha on Thursday and exploded, causing casualties.Pro-Hadi forces took Mokha from the insurgents on February 10 and said they aimed to push north to retake the countrys main Red Sea port of Hodeida next.On Monday, at least 16 Huthis were killed in a coalition air strike northeast of Hodeida and 23 others were wounded, medical and military sources said.Khokha is south of Hodeida. The conflict in Yemen has left more than 7,400 people dead and 40,000 wounded since the coalition intervened on the governments side in March 2015, the United Nations says.

Tennis: Muguruza advances to meeting with wild card Day

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Seventh-seeded French Open champion Garbine Muguruza moved smoothly into the third round at Indian Wells on Friday, downing Belgian Kirsten Flipkens 6-2, 6-3.Spains Muguruza advanced to a meeting with US wildcard Kayla Day, who ousted Australian Open semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.Day, at 17 the youngest woman in the main draw, toppled the 32nd-seeded Lucic-Baroni who at 35 was the third-oldest player in the field behind Venus Williams and Francesca Schiavone, both 36.Earlier, Australian Open quarter-finalist Johanna Konta held off Heather Watson in an all-British battle to secure a third-round berth in the hard court tournament. As the 32 seeded women who enjoyed first-round byes hit the courts in the California desert, world number 11 Konta led the way with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over her 108th-ranked compatriot. It definitely wasnt easy, said Konta, who is in pursuit of a second title of 2017 to go with the one she captured in Sydney in January. Its especially challenging when youre playing a member of your own Fed Cup team. After pocketing a see-saw first set that saw five breaks of serve, Konta appeared to be on her way with two service breaks for a 4-1 lead in the second. She hadnt faced a break point in the second set and was serving for the match at 5-3 when she suddenly dropped her serve with a game bookended by two of her three double-faults of the match. After Watson held at love Konta got another chance and didnt falter, locking it up on her first match point.I think its definitely challenging to adapt to conditions here, Konta said. Its drier and the ball flies further.Konta enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2016, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open and winning her first WTA title at the prestigious Stanford hardcourt tournament. She had been on a nine-match winning streak to start 2017 when she ran into eventual champion Serena Williams in the quarters in Melbourne this year.Big-serving Czech Pliskova, who also reached the Australian Open quarter-finals, faced a potentially tricky opener against Puerto Ricos Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig.Pliskova is aiming to improve on her semi-final run at Indian Wells last year. She has already won two titles in four events this year, at Brisbane and Doha, and coming into the week led the WTA in aces served with 140.

Football: Injury-time penalty gives Juventus victory

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - Juventus went 11 points clear in Italy on Friday when a contentious injury time penalty gave them a 2-1 win over 10-man AC Milan and a 31st successive home triumph. The defending champions looked set to be held by their old rivals, who had stunned the 32-time Serie A winners 1-0 at the San Siro earlier in the season, after Carlos Bacca had cancelled out Medhi Benatias opener for the league leaders. But in the closing minutes, Milan lost Jose Sousa to a red card for lashing out at Kwadwo Asamoah before Mattia De Sciglio was penalised for hand ball.Argentine striker Paulo Dybala kept his nerve to slot the penalty past teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who had pulled off a series of stunning saves to keep Milan in the game. The three points also allowed Juventus to look ahead to their Champions League last 16 return against Porto, who they lead 2-0, next week.Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri admitted he hadnt seen the penalty converted. The game was over. I was already in the tunnel and I preferred not to see the penalty, Allegri said.We were going to either win or draw. Paulo did well, because its never easy to put a penalty past Donnarumma, especially in the form he was in tonight.Milan coach Vincenzo Montella attempted to play down the controversy over the penalty which had led to angry scenes with his players venting their frustration with the referee.I dont want to talk about referees but there is a big difference between a penalty 10 minutes in and one at the 95th minute, Montella told Mediaset Premium.Juventus suffered a setback in the warm-up when Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic was struck down with illness. But the champions were soon into their stride and deservedly took the lead on the half-hour mark when Moroccan centre-back Benatia was picked out by a Dani Alves cross over the top of the defence.Benatia chested down the pass and drove the ball beyond the despairing dive of 18-year-old keeper Donnarumma. But Juve were put on the back foot just before the break when Spanish winger Gerard Deulofeu danced down the flanks to set up Colombian international Bacca for the equaliser. It was Baccas fourth goal in his last three Serie A games.Donnarumma then kept Milan in touch with saves from Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain but he was left shattered by the last-minute drama.Milan stay in seventh place, 20 points behind Juventus and seven off the final Champions League qualifying place.

Badminton: Marin stunned, India slump at All England

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Ratchanok Intanon, the former world champion from Thailand who only just won a fitness race to be ready for this weeks All-England Open, made a startling recovery to defeat Olympic champion Carolina Marin on Friday.Marin had not won a World Super Series event since before her Rio triumph, and although she vowed to rectify that by winning the title this week, she slid from within sight of victory to an improbable 22-20, 13-21, 21-18 defeat.Marin had been 18-11 up in the final game, having landed a variety of heavy smashes, sliced, round-the-head, and cannonball flat, which looked to be overwhelming the defences of her young rival. But the Thai then started to take the attacking initiative away from the aggressive Spaniard, landing three good blows herself and suddenly generating some momentum.Surprisingly Marin was unable to wrest it back, and at 18-16 was spoken to by the umpire, apparently for something she said.By that stage she had begun taking risks to get the elusive last three points, but this resulted in a mid-court jab into the net and a kill into the net, followed by a stunning defeat when she cleared the shuttle long.I was in control of the match at 18-11 but I lost focus, Marin reckoned. My opponent rushed me and I cant understand why I lost it.Ratchanok next plays a surprise semi-finalist, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, whose 21-23, 21-14, 22-20 victory over the fourth-seeded Sun Yu ended the Chinese bid to regain a womens singles title they have dominated for a large part of two decades.Earlier Tai Tzu Ying, the top-seeded World Super Series winner from Taiwan, reached the semi-final with an impressive 21-14, 21-10 win over Pusarla Sindhu, the Olympic siler medallist from India. After trailing 5-9 in the first game, Tai found ways of taming the Sindhu smash which was timed at 223 mph at last years All-England.I tried to find loopholes in her attack, Tai explained.Sindhus Olympic final with Marin set TV viewing records, and was watched by 17 million viewers in India, and utterly changed her life, bringing the rewards of cars, land and a government job and a million and a half pounds worth of cash. Now however the chance of glory at the worlds oldest tournament slipped rapidly away.It meant that both leading Indian players had gone out. Earlier Saina Nehwal was narrowly beaten 22-20, 22-20 by Sung Ji-hyun of Korea after leading 17-12 in the first game. Sung now plays Tai.

Formula One: Raikkonen sets new benchmark as Ferrari fly

BARCELONA (AFP) - Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen smashed teammate Sebastian Vettels best time in pre-season testing by nearly half a second to dominate the morning session of the final day of testing on Friday.Raikkonen edged to within three tenths of the track record in 1min 18.634sec to register the fastest time of the day by nearly a second.Vettels best of 1min 19.024sec on Thursday had already raised hopes that Ferrari, who havent won a drivers championship since Raikkonens success in 2007, can bring an end to Mercedes three years of dominance.Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton claimed Ferrari were bluffing with their eye-catching testing times and Mercedes may be keeping their powder dry for the first Grand Prix of the year in Melbourne on March 26.Valtteri Bottas was well over a second back on Raikkonen in fourth on the same supersoft tyre compound.Hamilton will take over from Bottas for the afternoon session.Dutch wonderkid Max Verstappen was second fastest as Red Bull again showed that they look set to be the third force behind Mercedes and Ferrari this season.Fernando Alonso and McLarens misery continued, though, as the two-time world champion broke down with the same electrical problems that saw Stoffel Vandoorne stop twice on Thursday.Alonso eventually got 19 laps under his belt but was once again relegated to last among the 10 drivers in action on the timesheets.

South Africa flourish as New Zealand miss chances

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - Dean Elgar was again tasked with holding the South African innings together as they progressed to 100 for two on a disrupted fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday. At lunch, South Africa were 67 runs in front with eight wickets in hand.Elgar, backing up from a first innings century, faced 112 deliveries for his 40, and survived one chance when dropped by wicketkeeper BJ Watling three overs before lunch. It marked a sloppy session by New Zealand in the field.JP Duminy, who was not out 32, had only made six when he was dropped by Tom Latham fielding at first slip in place of the injured Ross Taylor. On 14, a four off Jimmy Neesham sailed just over the outstretched hand of a leaping Henry Nicholls.Duminy was on 20 when he received his third life as an lbw appeal by Jeetan Patel was turned down.New Zealand chose not to review the decision and replays showed the ball would have hit the off stump. At that stage New Zealand had already wasted one review for a caught behind when the ball missed the bat, and they later lost their second review on a leg before wicket call when the ball deflected off the bat to the pads.Hashim Amla was the only wicket to fall in the opening session and added one run to his overnight 23 before he chipped a Neil Wagner delivery to substitute fielder Tim Southee at mid-wicket.The start of play was delayed nearly 40 minutes because of light drizzle and when it did start there were only four overs before bad light sent the players off for a further 15 minutes. The forecast is for cold but mainly fine weather for the remainder of the day but with heavy rain on Sunday.

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - West Indies coach Stuart Law backed his struggling team to avoid having to qualify for the 2019 World Cup -- on the day that out-of-favour heavyweights Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo penned new money-spinning Twenty20 deals. The fallen Caribbean giants were whitewashed 3-0 by England in the one-day international series, the final game seeing them suffer a 186-run rout with 10 overs to spare at Bridgetowns Kensington Oval on Thursday. With the West Indies facing the ignomy of missing the September cut for automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup, and taking their chances in qualifying alongside the likes of Afghanistan and Ireland, Law believes his team will come good -- given time.Id like to see these guys get more experience and they only get that by playing and not sitting on the sidelines. You cannot buy experience off the shelf, said the Australian.I am confident that these young guys have something that burns inside and thats the game of cricket. They are down at the moment but they will come back. If we work hard enough, we will have good times ahead.Law, who was taking charge of his first West Indies series, will next preside over a marathon Test, ODI and T20 schedule against Pakistan on home ground. But their recent troubles will be brought into sharp focus in June when they miss out on the eight-nation Champions Trophy, a mini-World Cup, taking place in England.Laws planning is not helped by having to contend with the ongoing political machinations which have eaten away at the teams soul.Gayle, with over 9,000 ODI runs, hasnt played for the 50-over team since the 2015 World Cup where the team exited in the quarter-finals and has been in a long-standing on-off dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board.Bravo, like Gayle a former skipper, hasnt featured since leading a player walkout on the 2014 tour of India.Darren Sammy, who led the West Indies to two World Twenty20 titles, was sacked last summer in what he claimed was a 30-second phone call. But they are all still in demand. At Fridays draft for the franchise-based Caribbean Premier League, Gayle and Bravo were the top targets at $160,000 each.Meanwhile, this seasons CPL will feature the first Afghanistan players with Mohammad Nabi (St. Kitts and Nevis) and Rashid Khan (Guyana) being snapped up.Khan, an 18-year-old leg-spinner, carved out a little bit of history for himself earlier Friday when he equalled the record for the best international T20 bowling figures with 5-3 in the win over Ireland in New Delhi. His five wickets came in two of his alloted four overs as the teenager went level with Sri Lanka veteran Rangana Herath who also took 5-3 against New Zealand in Chittagong in 2014.
