Rain forces New Zealand-South Africa Test draw

Posted:

HAMILTON (AFP) - The final day of the deciding third Test between New Zealand and South Africa was abandoned because of persistent rain in Hamilton on Wednesday, giving the Proteas a 1-0 series victory. The umpires called the game off as further showers swept across the ground just after the scheduled lunch break.New Zealand, who were in command after four days, were left frustrated to be denied the opportunity to draw level and snap a 13-year winless streak against South Africa.Play was to have resumed at 10.30am (2130 GMT Tuesday) with South Africa 80 for five in their second innings, requiring a further 95 runs to make New Zealand bat again. The decision to call off the game ensured South Africa kept intact a streak of winning all four series they have played since coming up short against England 14 months ago.But by only winning one match in this series they fell short of their primary target of winning two to rise to number two in the world rankings. For New Zealand, being denied the chance to finish all square against South Africa meant their first series loss of this southern summer following 2-0 wins against Pakistan and Bangladesh.New Zealand have only beaten South Africa five times in 45 Tests, the last time in Auckland in 2004.In 16 Tests since then, South Africa have won 10 with six drawn.

Rain washes out match after Taskin, Mendis feats

DAMBULLA (AFP) - Heavy rain washed out the second one-day international of a three-match series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Dambulla on Tuesday.Bangladesh could not start their innings due to rain after bowling out Sri Lanka for 311 runs in 49.5 overs, thanks to a hat-trick of fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, who finished with 4-47.The wash-out means Bangladesh now cannot lose the series after winning the first match by 90 runs on Saturday.Needing a win to stay alive in the tournament, Kusal Mendis laid the foundation for a strong total for Sri Lanka with 102 off 107 balls before Taskins late burst halted their progress at the Rangiri International Stadium.Taskin took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Mendis. Then he removed Asela Gunuratne (39), Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep in the final over to complete his hat-trick, becoming the fifth Bangladeshi bowler to achieve the feat.Mashrafe Mortaza took opener Danushka Gunathilaka early for nine but Mendis shared 111 runs with skipper Upul Tharanga for the second wicket to put Sri Lanka in a strong position.A direct hit from Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh separate the duo as Tharanga was run out for 65, trying to complete a single of a no-ball off Mustafizur Rahman.Mendis struck a six and a four in the next two balls to complete his fifty before racing to his century in 102 balls with a single off Mortaza. He also shared 83 runs for the third wicket with Dinesh Chandimal, who chipped in with 24 runs.Milinda Siriwardana also made a useful contribution with 30 runs.Sri Lanka made three changes to their squad, bringing in Nuwan Kulasekara, Nuwan Pradeep and Dilruwan Perera for Sachith Pathirana, Lahiru Kumara and Lakshan Sandakan. The third and final match of the series will be held in Colombo on April 1.

Root urges new planned English T20 event be shown on free-to-air TV

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England Test captain Joe Root believes the new planned city-based Twenty20 event must be shown on free-to-air television if it is to achieve its aim of attracting a new generation of cricket fans. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced Monday their intention to press ahead with a new eight-team Twenty20 competition, which they aim to launch in 2020.ECB chiefs, having seen the success of the Indian Premier League and especially Australias city-based Big Bash Twenty20 tournaments, believe they need something similar to help them reach family audiences and encourage children to become fans of the sport.I think it would be a very good idea, Root told BBC Radio 5 live as he gave his backing to the as yet unnamed tournament, which officials expect to run alongside the existing 18-county Twenty20 Blast. You look at other competitions in the world and they have been successful, the Yorkshireman added. The 2005 Ashes was the last home Test series to be broadcast live on free-to-air television in Britain, with many pundits claiming the switch to satellite coverage has meant cricket has become less visible to the public in its birthplace. It would make a huge difference, said Root. The coverage we are given by (satellite broadcaster) Sky is exceptional. They are fantastic, and continue to be fantastic. It is very important the public are given an opportunity to see cricket at a national level, on free-to-air TV. It will be interesting to see how things pan out and what decisions are made.Roots comments came as The Times reported that the BBC, Britains national public free-to-air broadcaster, had met with ECB officials over the possibility of televising live cricket for the first time since 1998 by showing matches in the new tournament. The proposal for a new tournament has proved hugely controversial as, if enacted, it will mean that for the first time there is a major domestic cricket tournament in England that does not feature all 18 first-class counties.Tuesday saw ECB chairman Colin Graves announce that the board had agreed to a vote to change rules that currently require its competitions to be contested by each of the counties. In order to go through, this will need the approval of at least 31 of the boards 41 members, which include the first-class counties, MCC and recreational boards. It looks as if the ECB will get the 31 votes they require, not least because all the first-class counties will be guaranteed pound 1.3 million ($1.6 million, 1.5 million euros) annually for five years if the tournament comes into being. Our members have seen the evidence for why the new T20 proposal is the right way to reach new audiences, create new fans and fuel the future of the game, said Graves. This is a watershed moment for us all to make the whole game stronger, the former Yorkshire chairman added.Meanwhile Michael Vaughan, who had previously said it was a problem for English cricket that fellow Yorkshire batsman Root could often walk down streets without being stopped for his autograph, also gave his support to the proposed new event.Cricket in this country needs something that changes the way we talk and think about the game, the former England captain said.Sixty percent of people that go to the Big Bash are families, people going to cricket for the first time, and I think that is where the ECB are looking. They took the game from the fifth favourite sport in the country five years ago to the first.

Aussies no longer friends, says Kohli

Posted:

DHARAMSALA (AFP) - Indian skipper Virat Kohli said he no longer considered Australian cricketers as friends after winning a tense Test series marked by bad blood in Dharamsala on Tuesday.Kohli, who remarked before the series that he was really good friends with some Australian players, said things had changed during the bitter contest between the worlds top two sides.I thought that was the case but it has changed for sure. As I said in the heat of the battle, you want to be competitive but yeah I have been proven wrong, he said in a post-match press conference. The thing I said before the first Test (about being friends), I have certainly been proven wrong, and you wont hear me say that ever again. The 28-year-old skipper caused a furore in the second Test after accusing his counterpart Steven Smith of repeatedly abusing the decision review system.Critics questioned Kohlis conduct under pressure, and also his form in the series, with the right-hander scoring just 46 runs from five innings.Tensions were exacerbated after the Indian captain was dubbed the Donald Trump of sport in an Australian newspaper, and former Test bowler Geoff Lawson accused him of acting like your worst behaved player.A combative Kohli hit back at his critics, inviting his detractors to say or write what they feel about him.A very wise person told me that when a person is down, the weak come out to speak about him. It takes courage to talk about someone when they are on top, he said.It is fine, I was targeted individually, and I havent done well in this series so opportunities galore for everyone to come out and speak about me which is fine....(it is) very easy to sit at home and write a blog or speak behind a mic, I think thats easier than coming out and competing in the field. The rancour between the sides was inflamed in the drawn third Test in Ranchi when Glenn Maxwell was pictured mocking Kohlis shoulder injury. The animosity then spilled over into the series-decider with Ravindra Jadeja and Aussie wicketkeeper Matthew Wade engaging in a verbal fight Monday that was caught by stump microphones. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted the footage, complete with stump microphone recordings, on its website and social media channels.Indias Murali Vijay then found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after claiming a catch that replays showed had spilled onto the grass.TV footage caught Smith fuming angrily in the dressing room and appearing to call Vijay a f****** cheat. The Aussie skipper apologised for his outburst but expressed disappointment that the on-field spat between Wade and Jadeja was made public by the BCCI.I have been pretty intense throughout this series. I really wanted to do well for the team. At times I have been in my own bubble and have let my emotions slip. I apologise for that, said Smith.I was a little bit disappointed that the BCCI sieved through the archive to find a conversation out on the field that was happening between Matty (Wade) and Jadeja. Its happened between both sides throughout this series, so the fact theyve done that to us is a little bit disappointing.Usually whats said on the field should stay on the field.

EU to block LSE-Deutsche Boerse merger: sources

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - The EU will reject as early as Wednesday the blockbuster merger of the London Stock Exchange with Germanys Deutsche Boerse that was caught up by the fallout from Brexit, sources said. The decision was widely expected after LSE last month said it had refused the European Commissions request to divest its majority stake in Italian trading platform MTS.EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager will give a press conference on a merger case on Wednesday, although Brussels has not confirmed which case it involves. It is likely that the European Commission will block the merger with LSE on Wednesday, a source at Deutsche Boerse told AFP on Tuesday, on condition of anonymity. An LSE-Deutsche Boerse merger would have created a financial markets behemoth competing with the likes of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and ICE in the United States, as well as the Hong Kong stock exchange in Asia. The commissions veto will hardly be a surprise given the amount of problems raised in the in-depth probe, said Jacques Lafitte of the Avisa consultancy that advised the US exchange Nasdaq which opposed the deal. The blockbuster merger was unveiled to much fanfare last year and vigorously backed by both sides even in face of Brexit. But concerns grew in Germany after it was revealed that the merged company would be headquartered in a soon to be non-EU London and not Frankfurt. The proposed tie-up also drew criticism from France, Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands, fearful for the future of their own stock exchanges, owned by Euronext. All the planets aligned to bring this decision, said Benoit Le Bret, a lawyer representing the Paris Europlace trade group. It is the third time that the Frankfurt and London stock exchanges have tried to tie the knot, following two unsuccessful attempts in 2000 and 2005.The development could now reignite interest from US-based global markets operator Intercontinental Exchange -- owner of the New York Stock Exchange -- which had decided against bidding for the LSE last May.Deutsche Boerse, which also operates the Luxembourg-based clearing house Clearstream and the derivatives platform Eurex, this month said it still had global ambitions despite the failure

Germany launches probe into 'intolerable spying' by Turkey

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - German prosecutors announced an investigation Tuesday into claims that Turkish agents are spying on alleged followers of exiled preacher Fethullah Gulen in Germany. The probe came as a German state minister accused Turkey of the unacceptable espionage against supporters of Gulen, blamed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a failed coup attempt last year. The claims open a new front in the diplomatic row between NATO allies Germany and Turkey, whose relationship has been strained by a series of disputes centred on human rights issues. It is clear that the Turkish secret service MIT is investigating people living in Germany, said Boris Pistorius, interior minister of the northern German state of Lower Saxony, deploring the intensity and ruthlessness of Turkeys pursuit of people living abroad. Its intolerable and unacceptable, he said at a press conference.Erdogans government had asked Berlin to help spy on about 300 alleged Gulen supporters, Pistorius said, adding that the list was handed to Germanys BND spy service, which turned it over to state governments. But Pistoriuss state decided to inform the more than 10 targets in Lower Saxony, including a school and at least two companies, fearing people could suffer retaliation if they travelled to Turkey while unaware they were on a watch list.Turkish authorities were acting with something close to paranoia, he said, adding that all Gulen supporters are assumed to be terrorists and enemies of the state even though there is not the tiniest scrap of evidence. As of today, we have no evidence whatsoever that Gulen supporters have violated any rules in any way.According to German media, Turkish officials handed the target list including names, addresses, telephone numbers and photographs to their German counterparts during the Munich Security Conference in February.Federal prosecutors will now examine how Turkey compiled such detailed information on their targets. The success of our investigation will depend largely on the information shared with us by German counter-espionage agencies, spokeswoman Frauke Koehler said about the probe into persons unknown.Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere meanwhile warned Turkey against spying in Germany, saying espionage activities on German soil is punishable by law and will not be tolerated by us.
