Tennis: Federer beats Wawrinka for fifth Indian Wells title

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Roger Federer claimed a record-equalling fifth ATP Indian Wells Masters title on Sunday, continuing his career resurgence with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Stan Wawrinka.Federer, sidelined some six months after knee surgery last year, returned to win his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. With Sundays triumph in the all-Swiss final, Federer joined Novak Djokovic as the only men to win five Indian Wells titles, adding to those he won in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.At 35, Federer is the oldest ATP player to win one of the elite Masters titles, supplanting Andre Agassi who was 34 when he won in Cincinnati in 2004.Its been just a fairytale week once again, said Federer, who missed Indian Wells last year because of injury.Im not as surprised as I was in Australia, but still this comes as a big, big surprise to me, nevertheless, to win here again and beating the players that I did and the way I did.I couldnt be more happy. Its an absolute, huge start to the year for me. Last year I didnt win any titles. I dont think I was in any finals except maybe Brisbane last year. The change is dramatic, and it feels great. The speedy progress means 10th-ranked Federer will have to reassess his 2017 goals. Prior to the Australian Open his aim was to get his ranking to as high as eighth by the time Wimbledon was over. The goals are clearly changing after this dream start, Federer said. While Federer had won 19 of 22 prior meetings with Wawrinka -- including a semi-final win in Melbourne -- he noted that his compatriot would be no easy mark as he played his first tournament in America since winning the US Open in September. But Federer claimed a tightly contested first set with a break in the 10th game, pushing Wawrinka into a forehand error to end a tense rally for a set point, on which Wawrinka sent another forehand long.Wawrinka responded immediately with a break to open the first set -- after Federer had held all 42 of his service games in the tournament to that point. He had saved the lone break point he faced -- in his straight-sets thumping of Rafael Nadal in the fourth round -- but sent a backhand long on break point to give Wawrinka the advantage in the set.Wawrinka then withstood two break points to hold for a 2-0 lead, which proved short-lived as Federer won the next three games to take a 3-2 lead. Finally Wawrinka found himself serving to save the match. A backhand into the net gave Federer a chance, and he seized it with a volley winner.Ive lost some tough ones against you, but when you played the final in Australia, I was your biggest fan, a choked up Wawrinka told Federer at the trophy ceremony. So congratulations on your comeback and congratulations on today.Although he owns three Grand Slam titles, Wawrinka was playing in just his fourth Masters final and has won just one of the prestige events -- beating Federer in the final at Monte Carlo in 2014.Its a tough loss, he said. In a way, Im really happy to make the final. Its a great result on that, but you always want more. After fearing that knee trouble in the wake of the Australian Open would slow his season, Wawrinka was pleased to play at a high level. After Australia, I wasnt in a good position, he said. I was really, really struggling with my knee. I wasnt sure to be back here in that level that quick. But I still lost the final, he said. So it wasnt easy.

Tennis: Vesnina beats Kuznetsova to win Indian Wells WTA title

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Elena Vesnina capped a stellar Indian Wells campaign with a hard-fought 6-7 (6/8), 7-5, 6-4 triumph over fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova on Sunday.Playing in her first final at the elite Premier Mandatory level, world number 15 Vesnina battled through a tense three hours and one minute to subdue eighth-ranked Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion. The triumph comes a year after Vesnina, 30, fell in the first round of qualifying at Indian Wells and capped a tournament that saw her down both Germanys soon-to-be number one Angelique Kerber and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams. For Kuznetsova, it was a third disappointment in as many finals at Indian Wells, this one coming a decade after she fell in back to back finals in 2007 and 2008.A third set that, like the first two, featured multiple service breaks saw Kuznetsova take a 4-2 lead before Vesnina broke for 4-3 then won a marathon ninth game in which Kuznetsova saved four break points before Vesnina converted her fifth with a stinging service winner to find herself serving for the match. After knocking a forehand wide on her first match point, she secured the victory when Kuznetsovas service return went long. She was up set and 4-1, then 4-2 in the third, Vesnina said. She had so many break points on my serve. She was 30-Love up couple of times on her serves. And I always keep coming back. I stick there, you know.I was just not giving anything at that moment. I didnt think about the end of the match. And when I broke her at 4-All and went to serve for the match, I had this in my mind: Im not going to give it. I went to serve and I was, like, Im never going to lose this game. For a time it seemed Kuznetsovas steadier play would win the day, but in the end it was Vesninas aggression that paid off, even though her 49 unforced errors out-stripped her 46 winners.I felt like when I was playing, I didnt feel good today, because she was very aggressive, and I was a little bit out of my game, Kuznetsova said. I was too far from the court, and I was running all the way, way behind, so the only thing I could do was defend.I was too passive, Kuznetsova said. I think thats why I lost. The victory continues Vesninas rise of the last year. She reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2016 and is no stranger to the big stage in doubles, in which she captured Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro. In a first set featuring four breaks of serve, Kuznetsova gave Vesnina a set point with a double fault in the 10th game, but Vesnina sent a forehand wide and Kuznetsova escaped to hold serve. She double-faulted herself on her first set point in the tiebreaker before Vesnina saved another set point with a service winner.Kuznetsova finally sealed the set with the help of a favorable netcord bounce after an hour and 11 minutes. It was such a heartbreaking moment for me, Vesnina said of that netcord, and she looked rattled as Kuznetsova stormed through the first two games of the second set.But she slowed Kuznetsovas progress with a break for 2-1 before another break and a hold from Kuznetsova put Kuznetsova up 4-1.After a on-court talk with her father-coach Sergey Vesnin, Vesnina won four straight games to find herself serving for the set. She didnt get a whiff of a set point as Kuznetsova closed out yet another service break with two crisp forehand winners. But Vesnina responded with a break of her own and wouldnt waste her next chance, firing an ace on her first set point to send it to a third. While she said her Olympic doubles triumph holds a special place in her heart, Vesnina was thrilled with the biggest singles win of her career.Only the Grand Slam is bigger, the only thing that can beat this win, she said.

Football: Messi double edges six-goal thriller Barca's way

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona closed to within two points of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga as Lionel Messi scored twice in a thrilling 4-2 win over 10-man Valencia at Camp Nou on Sunday.Earlier, Antoine Griezmann scored a stunning free-kick as Atletico Madrid compounded a week to forget for Sevilla with a 3-1 at the Vicente Calderon.Barca needed to come from behind to keep the pressure on Madrid as Eliaquim Mangala headed Valencia in front. But the on-loan Manchester City defender was sent-off for pulling down Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan had levelled and Messi smashed home the resulting penalty.Munir El Haddadi briefly levelled for the 10 men before half-time, but Messi and finally Andre Gomes with his first Barca goal sealed the three points.Madrid still also have a game in hand over their title rivals. We created a huge number of chances and deserved to win by a bigger margin, Barca boss Luis Enrique told Spanish TV station Movistar.Against an opponent with very good players weve picked up three valuable points.Enrique named the same side that beat Paris Saint-Germain 6-1 10 days ago to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals in stunning fashion. And whilst not matching that drama, there was no shortage of action as Valencia showed up the defensive flaws in Enriques new 3-4-3 system. An action packed final 15 minutes of the first-half saw four goals and a red card.Barcas weakness from set-pieces was exposed again a week on from conceding twice from corners in a 2-1 defeat at Deportivo la Coruna when Mangala powered home Dani Parejos corner to open the scoring. The lead lasted just six minutes as Suarez raced onto Neymars throw-in to slot into the far corner.Mangala went from hero to villain as he then pulled down Suarez inside the area to concede a penalty and be sent-off.Messi beat penalty specialist Diego Alves from the spot. However, straight from kick-off Barca were caught cold as Jose Gaya teed up Munir El Haddadi to score against his parent club for the second time this season. The champions still had 45 minutes to make their man advantage count, though, and they did so despite missing a host of chances after the break.Messi drilled home at Alvess near post seven minutes into the second period for his 41st goal of the season.Suarez somehow slotted wide with the goal gaping after Alves had denied Messi his hat-trick, whilst Neymar hit the bar.But Barca finally put the game to bed a minute from time when Neymar crossed for Gomes to tap home against his old side.At the Calderon, Griezmann shone for Atletico once more as he teed up Diego Godins opener and then struck a stunning free-kick for his 22nd goal of the season.Koke added Atleticos third before Joaquin Correa registered a consolation for Sevilla.Sevilla were dumped out of the Champions League by Atleticos quarter-final opponents Leicester City on Wednesday and have seen their lead over Atletico in third place in La Liga now whittled down to two points.A third straight league win moves Diego Simeones men seven points clear of Real Sociedad and Villarreal in the battle for fourth.Sevilla have had a magnificent season and have been lauded by the press. That highlights even more how well Atletico played, said Atletico coach Diego Simeone. And the Atletico fans also celebrated the return of Fernando Torres for the first time since he was knocked unconscious in a sickening head clash at Deportivo la Coruna on March 2.Defeat realistically ends Sevillas already fading shot at the title as they fall eight points behind Real Madrid. And coach Jorge Sampaoli claimed he has to rediscover the real Sevilla during the international break after four games without a win.We have come from a very hard blow to take and now we have to find solutions and the real Sevilla.

Football: Aguero leveller keeps Liverpool at bay

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Sergio Aguero netted a 69th-minute equaliser in a gripping 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday to prevent Manchester City losing ground in the battle for a top-four Premier League finish.Liverpool looked poised to leapfrog City into third place after James Milner silenced the boos from fans of his former club to give the visitors the lead with a penalty early in the second half. But Agueros strike kept City a point above their rivals, who have played a game more, and provided a moment of solace after their mid-week Champions League elimination at Monacos hands. Both sides had chances to win the game in a breathless finale, Kevin De Bruyne hitting a post for City and Adam Lallana horribly miscuing with only the goalkeeper to beat.Pep Guardiola had come in for criticism after Citys 3-1 loss at Stade Louis II, but his side will approach back-to-back trips to Arsenal and Chelsea on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run in the league. While Jurgen Klopp failed to become the first manager to do a league double over Guardiola, his Liverpool team are now unbeaten in 10 games against their fellow top-six sides this season.A rain-slicked pitch and two attack-minded teams made for a furious first half at the Etihad Stadium, characterised by City possession and Liverpool counter-attacks.City unambiguously targeted the flanks, Leroy Sane on the left and ex-Liverpool man Raheem Sterling on the right whipping a succession of low, pacy crosses across Simon Mignolets six-yard box.Twice, Aguero felt he had been unfairly impeded as he tried to get on the end of them, first by Joel Matip and then Ragnar Klavan. The latter incident, in the 43rd minute, also saw Sterling taken out by a despairing Milner as the pair stretched for David Silvas low cross, with Fernandinho sliding the ball wide at the back post.Citys clearest opening of the half saw Silva thrash the ball inches wide of the left-hand post after Mignolet had jutted out his left foot to fend off a drive from Sane. But the best chances of the first period were all Liverpools. An under-hit John Stones back-pass let in Sadio Mane, only for an authoritative sortie by goalkeeper Willy Caballero, allied to a subtle tug from Nicolas Otamendi, to save the day.Philippe Coutinho bent a shot just over, Matip headed wide at a free-kick and Caballero showed agility to claw away a Roberto Firmino curler and touch over a thumping Lallana volley. After Mane had seen a shot blocked by Stones, Liverpool went ahead in the sixth minute of the second half.Gael Clichy was penalised for a high, untidy challenge on Firmino as the Brazilian chested down Emre Cans flighted pass and Milner swept the penalty into the bottom-left corner.Firmino looked poised to double the visitors lead from Coutinhos measured through ball, but Caballero stood up well to save.Eight minutes later it was all square as De Bruynes brilliantly measured cross from the right was unerringly dispatched by Aguero.Aguero looked poised to put City ahead in the 76th minute, but after a neat one-two with Sane he stumbled, De Bruyne scuffing the loose ball against the post.An increasingly end-to-end contest then spat out a glorious chance for Lallana, but from Firminos knock-down and with Mignolets goal at his mercy, he missed his kick.As the noise levels rose, Sterling and Aguero -- twice -- spurned late chances, but a draw felt an appropriate outcome.

Football: Spurs ignore Kane absence to down Saints

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham overcame the absence of leading scorer Harry Kane to beat Southampton 2-1 and close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday.First half goals from Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli at White Hart Lane gave Mauricio Pochettinos side the cushion they needed to hold onto victory after James Ward-Prowse halved the deficit early in the second half. With 10 games remaining, the chances of overhauling Chelseas 10-point lead are slim, but victory strengthened Spurs position in the race to guarantee a top four finish by extending the gap to fifth place to seven points.Southampton are well clear of the relegation places and their remaining aim this season is to maintain their top 10 standing.Pochettino had insisted before the game his squad had the resources to cope with the loss of Kane, who was ruled out for up to six weeks after picking up an ankle injury in the FA cup quarter-final victory over Millwall seven days previously. The managers confidence was not necessarily supported by the evidence from the opening months of the season when his team struggled in the absence of the England striker. Then, Kane was sidelined for 12 games and in the nine games Spurs faced Premier League opposition during that spell, they won just three, scoring eight games.Pochettino, though, believes his squad has grown in strength as the season has progressed and placed his faith in Son Heung-Min to fill the gap left by Kane and provide the focal point to Tottenhams attack. The early signs were certainly promising, with the South Korea forward quickly finding space behind the Southampton defence as he ran on to collect Allis well weighted through-ball, only to be denied by keeper Fraser Forster who moved quickly off his line to narrow the angle. The breakthrough, however, came from Christian Eriksen who put Tottenham ahead after just 13 minutes with a superbly struck shot from outside the area. The Dane collected a pass from the excellent Mousa Dembele, turned onto his left foot, and placed his finish beyond Forster and inside the keepers right hand post.Tottenham were in the ascendancy but Southampton demonstrated enough of a threat to ensure Pochettinos side could not afford to be complacent and would have levelled had Manolo Gabbiadini shown more composure in front of goal. The Italian striker quickly settled in England since his January move from Napoli and was bidding to become only the third player to score in his first four Premier League appearances.Gabbiadini should have reached that landmark when he fired into the side-netting in the 28th minute after being set up by Dusan Tadic. Then 60 seconds later, he was guilty of an even more glaring miss when he skied over from just six yards.Unfortunately for the visitors, the striker picked up an injury while attempting to convert the first of those chances, forcing him out of the game, moments before Alli gave the home side the comfort of a two-goal cushion. The midfielder was sent to ground after tangling with Southamptons Steven Davis, prompting referee Andre Marriner to award the penalty that was converted with ease by Alli.Southampton felt aggrieved not have been awarded a penalty of their own shortly before the break when Ben Davies brought Tadic down. But the visitors frustration eased when they found a route back into the game just seven minutes after the interval.Ryan Bertrands left wing cross should have been cleared by Spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld, but the ball found its way to Ward-Prowse who finished well at the far post after taking a touch.Southampton pressed hard for an equaliser, but Pochettinos men held on to extend their impressive home record.

Football: United on the up as Fellaini strikes

MIDDLESBROUGH (AFP) - Marouane Fellaini scored his first Premier League goal for 15 months as Manchester United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to 18 games to move up to fifth with a 3-1 victory at relegation-threatened Middlesbrough on Sunday.Jesse Lingard added a stunning second and Antonio Valencia a stoppage-time third after an embarrassing mistake by former United keeper Victor Valdes as Jose Mourinhos side ended a 19-week stay in sixth by climbing a place.Their latest victory as they became the first club to record 600 Premier League wins puts them a distant 17 points behind leaders Chelsea but two points ahead of their nearest rivals Arsenal and Everton in seventh, boosting their hopes of a top-four finish in the race to qualify for a place in next seasons Champions League.Middlesbrough pulled a late goal back through substitute Rudy Gestede, but they remain second-bottom, five points adrift of safety after an 11th league game without victory as caretaker manager Steve Agnew tasted defeat in his first match following the departure of Aitor Karanka.Gestede initially appeared to bite defender Eric Bailly in a stoppage time melee on the edge of the visitors area in an altercation missed by referee Jon Moss and his assistants.Replays showed there was no contact as the pair engaged in an angry clinch, but punches appeared to be thrown afterwards in the players tunnel a both sides left the pitch.United were last beaten in the league at the end of October, a record which rarely looked under threat once they took a deserved 30th minute lead through Fellaini. The Belgian international midfielder had scored his previous league goal in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in December 2015, but had few problems in ending that barren run with his third goal of the season.Ashley Young cut in from the left to send over a searching cross to the far post, and as Valdes and former Manchester United defender Fabio hesitated, Fellaini was left with the simple task of heading the ball into an unguarded net from close range.Valdes had kept his side in the contest with a stunning double save to keep out a point-blank Marcus Rashford effort from Juan Matas cross, before recovering to block the follow-up from Valencia. The former Barcelona keeper had already denied Rashford with a fine block after the forward out-paced his marker Bernardo to Valencias astute through-ball.David De Gea was called into action just once before the break, saving well from Gaston Ramirez, who along with Stewart Downing and Alvaro Negredo was restored to the starting line-up by Agnew, the trio having previously fallen out of favour with Karanka. The injured Wayne Rooney was again unavailable for the visitors as Mourinho made seven changes from the midweek Europa League victory over Rostov. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended and Paul Pogba ruled out by a hamstring problem, it was only the third time this season neither had featured on the team-sheet.United made light of their absence as Lingard doubled the lead in spectacular style in the 62nd minute. The England international picked up possession just inside the Middlesbrough half, and as Bernardo stood off inviting the midfielder to advance, he did just that to send an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 20 yards.Negredo went close with two second-half headers, before Gestede made the most of an error from Chris Smalling to reduce the arrears from close range with his first league goal since a move from Aston Villa in January to end his sides eight-and-a-half hour wait for a league goal.It gave the hosts hope of salvaging a point in the final 13 minutes, but Mourinhos side held out without further alarm, Valencia pouncing on a slip by Valdes to walk the ball into an unguarded net to embellish the margin of victory.

Golf: Leishman holds off McIlroy to win Bay Hill title

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Australias Marc Leishman sank a 51-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole Sunday and held off a charging Rory McIlroy and two others to capture the Arnold Palmer Invitational.One-putting the last four holes at Bay Hill, the 33-year-old Aussie surged late to claim his first US victory since 2012.It just all came together, Leishman said. To do it here is really good. It was just an unbelievable day.Leishman fired a final-round three-under par 69 to stand on 11-under 277 for 72 holes at the famed Orlando, Florida, layout in the first event since the death of tournament namesake Palmer, the golf legend who had hosted the event annually.Mr. Palmer was a very special guy, Leishman said. To win it in honor of him was huge.Americans Kevin Kisner and Charley Hoffman, co-leaders entering the final round, each fired 73s to share second on 278 with McIlroy and Englands Tyrell Hatton sharing fourth on 279 and Canadas Adam Hadwin on 280.McIlroy will jump past Australias Jason Day to become world number two on Monday with American Dustin Johnson still atop the rankings, but a closing bogey ended his title bid in what became a four-man shootout down the final holes.Around here, things can change so quick, Leishman said. Youve just got to stay right in it, not think about whats the end result, just focus on what youve got to do. I was focused on my putts and luckily they all went into the hole.Leishmans first victory in front of his family was enough to qualify him for the Masters in three weeks at Augusta National, where he shared fourth in 2013.His only prior US PGA victory had come in the 2012 Travelers Championship. His lone European Tour title was at the 2015 Nedbank Challenge, although he was a British Open runner-up in 2015, losing in a playoff to Zach Johnson.McIlroy tapped in for birdie at the par-5 16th to join Hoffman one off Kisners lead, but Kisner found the rough at the par-3 14th and missed an eight-foot par putt, leaving the trio deadlocked in front as the drama unfolded.Leishman, who was one adrift, jumped into the lead at the par-5 16th when he reached the green in two and then sank his eagle stunner to leapfrog the leaders and take the top spot at 11-under.McIlroy stumbled at 18, three-putting from 31 feet for a closing bogey, and Hoffman faltered at 17, finding a bunker off the tee and missing an eight-foot par putt to fall back. Not even his fourth birdie at 18 in as many days could salvage his hopes.Leishman was short of the green with his second shot at 18, but pitched the ball three feet from the cup and tapped in the tense par putt to reach the clubhouse one ahead of Kisner. In the last group, Kisner sent his approach at 18 into a bunker and needed to hole it to force a playoff. When the ball rolled four feet wide, Leishman had the victory.
