Football: Leicester through to Champions League quarter-finals

Posted:

LEICESTER (AFP) - Kasper Schmeichel pulled off a dramatic late penalty save as Leicester City sank Sevilla 2-0 on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time.Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, after which Claudio Ranieri was sacked as manager, Leicester scored through Wes Morgan and Marc Albrighton before Schmeichel repelled Steven NZonzis spot-kick.It gave them a 3-2 aggregate win and continued a remarkable turnaround under new manager Craig Shakespeare, who has won three games in a row since stepping up from his role as Ranieris assistant.Unrecognisable in the defence of their miraculous Premier League title, Leicester have found solace in the Champions League and have now won all four of their home matches in the competition. They also chose a good time to rediscover a bit of defensive solidity -- and good fortune -- having previously gone 12 matches without keeping a clean sheet in all competitions.Sevilla, winners of the last three Europa Leagues, saw Samir Nasri sent off late on after he was shown an extraordinary second yellow card for aiming a headbutt at Jamie Vardy.NZonzi might yet have taken the game to extra time after Schmeichel was penalised for catching Vitolo after the forward had dinked a shot past him.But the Dane redeemed himself with a save low to his left, thwarting Sevillas hopes of reaching the last eight for the first time since 1958.The back-to-back 3-1 wins against Liverpool and Hull City overseen by Shakespeare had restored Leicesters self-belief and the stadium crackled with anticipation prior to kick-off.A carpet of blue and white flags greeted the teams, while Leicesters fans unveiled a giant banner of Shakespeare, accompanied by the rousing William Shakespeare quote: Let slip the dogs of war.For all the sound and fury generated by the home support, it was Sevilla who procured the first two sights of goal.Nasri, one of eight changes made by Jorge Sampaoli, was denied by a one-handed save from Schmeichel in the fourth minute, while Pablo Sarabia dragged wide with his left foot. But in the 27th minute Leicester took control of the tie, Riyad Mahrez swinging a free-kick into the box after Vicente Iborra had felled Vardy and Morgan bundling home with his right knee. The King Power Stadium erupted with a noise that recalled the triumphs of last year and short of a mishit Gabriel Mercado cross that Schmeichel had to palm over, Leicester reached the break without alarm.Sampaoli made two changes at half-time, sending on Mariano Ferreira and Stevan Jovetic for Mercado and Sarabia, and eight minutes in his side came within millimetres of restoring their advantage.Sergio Escudero let fly with a fluttering effort from 35 yards that crashed against the bar before bouncing down and out, with Jovetic hoisting the rebound over.Barely a minute later Leicester took the lead in the tie outright.Mahrezs cross from the right was tamely headed away by Adil Rami, allowing Albrighton to chest the ball down and arrow a left-foot drive past a statuesque Sergio Rico.Nasris moment of madness arrived shortly after Schmeichel had parried from substitute Joaquin Correa. With play ongoing, the Frenchman, taking exception to a push from Vardy, squared up to the England striker and lowered his head, prompting a second yellow card from referee Daniele Orsato.Orsato was not prepared to abandon centre-stage and after awarding Sevillas penalty, he compounded the visitors frustrations by sending the protesting Sampaoli to the stands.

Football: Dybala fires Juve past depleted Porto

Posted:

TURIN (AFP) - A first-half penalty from Paulo Dybala helped fire Juventus into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday after a 1-0 win sent the Serie A champions through 3-0 on aggregate.Porto coach Nuno Espirito Santo had hailed Juves 20-game unbeaten home run in Europe as he played down the Portuguese sides chances of overturning a 2-0 first leg defeat at the Estadio do Dragao. And the 43-year-old was right not to talk up their chances.Despite enjoying plenty of possession in a first half that saw the hosts squander a number of chances, their bid ended when right-back Maxi Pereira saw red after handling Gonzalo Higuains goal-bound shot five minutes before the break.Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan immediately pointed to the spot and Argentinian playmaker Dybala stepped up in confident fashion to drill his effort into the bottom right corner as Iker Casillas dived the other way.Juventus stretched their unbeaten home record in Europe to 21 games, although that could come under threat depending on who the 2015 finalists are paired with in Fridays quarter-final draw. The last time Juventus suffered a home defeat in Europe was a 2-0 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, in the quarter-finals, in April 2013.Allegri deployed an attack-minded 4-2-3-1 formation that saw Higuain lead the Turin giants attack at Juventus Stadium. But it was Dybala, whose only previous Champions League goal this campaign came in a 4-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb last September, who had the majority of the chances. The Argentinian had spoken on Monday of his desire to add to his tally in Europe, but fired wide twice in the opening stages as Juventus set the tone.At the other end, Brazilian Francisco Soares curled directly into Gianluigi Buffons arms, but it was one of too few opportunities for the visitors.Mario Mandzukics header was smothered by Spanish goalkeeper Casillas, who was making a record 175th appearance in European competition and overtook AC Milan great Paolo Maldini (174).Dybala then failed to make contact with Higuains delivery on the edge of the box and after turning provider, Ivan Marcano did well to intercept Dybalas cross as Mandzukic hovered. The imposing Croatian forward went closer with a header whistling wide of the far post from a corner, before Pereira threw himself in spectacular fashion to block Higuains shot with his hand after Alex Sandros header was parried by Casillas. That left the visitors a man down and Dybala made no mistake from the spot to claim his third goal in the competition.Juve could have had a second goal just after the restart but Casillas produced a fine reflex save at his near post to stop a wayward header by Porto midfielder Danilo.Minutes later Buffon rushed out to close down Soares after he escaped Sandro to fire an angled shot wide of the keepers far post.Allegri replaced Juan Cuadrado with Marko Pjaca for the start of the second half and the Croatian starlet saw an angled effort spin past Casillass far post after he controlled well under pressure on the edge of the area.Higuain, on 66 minutes, then fired just wide after holding off two markers in the area in what was Juves last real chance to add to their tally.

Tennis: Nadal books Indian Wells fourth-round berth

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Rafael Nadal did his part to set up a fourth-round clash with Roger Federer at the ATP Indian Wells Masters on Tuesday, powering past Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 7-5.Nadals victory marked the second straight year he has vanquished his fellow Spaniard in the third round at Indian Wells.Federer, who beat Nadal in a five-set thriller to lift his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open six weeks ago, faced American Steve Johnson later Tuesday for a chance to set up the rematch. He and Nadal have faced each other 35 times in a celebrated rivalry, but they havent met before the quarter-finals of a tournament since their first meeting in the round of 32 at Miami in 2004.Their star-studded quarter of the draw also features five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic, the second seed who faced a tough third-round clash with Argentine Juan Martin del Potro under the Stadium Court lights. While Djokovic has won 12 of their 16 career meetings, del Potro has produced some big wins in the series, including a first-round triumph en route to a silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics last year.Djokovic avenged that defeat with a three-round victory in Acapulco this month.I have to give it my all, said Djokovic of the task ahead. Thats what it takes to beat this guy. Even though he is not ranked as high and he hasnt played that many tournaments (he was) definitely one of the best players in the world last year, especially in the second part of the year, winning Davis Cup, silver medal for his country - beating myself - and Wawrinka at Wimbledon. With the loaded bottom quarter the focus of attention, fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan quietly advanced to the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.Nishikori booked a date with unseeded American Donald Young, who ousted 14th-seeded Lucas Pouille of France 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.Despite two horrible games, Nadal was pleased with his overall effort against Verdasco, a left-hander like himself who has pushed him in the past.I played a good match -- very aggressive with my serve, serving well, hitting good forehands, good backhands.I think I played much better today than the first day. I played two horrible games, terrible. Thats it. For the rest of the match I think I played very well. The blip came after Nadal had broken for a 2-1 lead in the second set. He was promptly broken to love himself, Then Verdasco held with a love game. But Nadal gained the break he needed for a 6-5 lead in a game Verdasco book-ended with double faults, and served it out without a hitch.

Pound mauled on Brexit uncertainty, oil falls again

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Sterling slumped to an eight-week low Tuesday on Brexit concerns, while most global equity markets pulled back ahead of a much-anticipated Federal Reserve policy decision.Oil prices, meanwhile, fell further on renewed concerns that OPECs production cuts will fail to erase a global crude glut.European and US markets are suffering in a whirlwind of anxiety, with the impending Article 50 activation, Dutch elections, Fed rate hike and the issue of a second Scottish (independence) referendum all feeding into market uncertainty, said market analyst Joshua Mahony at online trading firm IG.Sterling slid to $1.2110 at one point, the lowest level for two months. The reality of the UKs divorce from Europe and two years of horse-trading to agree trade deals is beginning to spook the forex market, said Kathleen Brooks, research director at City Index. After weeks of wrangling, British lawmakers on Monday finally granted Prime Minister Theresa May the right to trigger Article 50 of the EUs Lisbon Treaty, which would start the two-year divorce process from the European Union.May made a major statement to parliament on Tuesday but she kept up the suspense over when she would trigger Brexit, saying she would have the power to do so within days and it would happen by the end of March. The fall of the pound often lends support to Londons benchmark FTSE 100 stocks index that features numerous multi-nationals earning in currencies other than the pound, but the drop in crude prices dragged down energy companies.West Texas Intermediate (WTI) finished down 68 cents at $47.72 a barrel, while Brent oil in London shed 43 cents to $50.92 a barrel. While OPEC said in its monthly report on Tuesday that oil producers had kept their promises to cut output, the market was spooked about the cartels commitment to its production limits as Saudi Arabia increased output last month.Saudi Arabia took steps to address the worries, releasing a statement that attributed the higher figures in February to storage adjustments and saying the amount of oil supplied to the market had actually fallen.Saudi Arabia is committed and determined to stabilize the global oil market by working closely with all other participating OPEC and non-OPEC producers, the energy ministry said.Elsewhere in Europe, there is unease about Wednesdays elections in the Netherlands, where far-right anti-EU nationalists are predicted to score well.Investors in the US fixated on the two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting that concludes Wednesday as new data showed higher US wholesale inflation in February, raising anxiety Fed chief Janet Yellen could hint at more rate hikes this year. The Fed already was anticipating three increases this year. Its a foregone conclusion the Fed will raise rates Wednesday, said Bill Lynch, director of investment at Hinsdale Associates. The question mark is what she says afterwards at the news conference as to how aggressive theyre going to be the rest of the year in raising rates. The Fed will release its latest economic forecasts Wednesday as well, including the outlook for the benchmark federal funds rate.

South Africa draft in extra spinner for New Zealand

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - South Africa on Tuesday called up off-spinner Dane Piedt to join their squad for the third and final Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, starting on March 25.The South African selectors packed their original touring squad with seam bowlers and only selected one specialist spinner in left-armer Keshav Maharaj. The drawn first Test in Dunedin was played on a slow, turning pitch and New Zealand picked two spinners, who bowled a combined 106 overs out of a total of 224.4 during South Africas two innings.Maharaj bowled 28.3 overs in New Zealands only innings, which lasted 114.3 overs, and took five for 94.Piedt will not arrive in New Zealand in time for the second Test, which starts in Wellington on Thursday, but could be drafted into the line-up for the third Test if the Hamilton pitch is similar to the spin-friendly surface that was used for two one-day internationals.Piedt, 27, took 24 wickets at an average of 36.04 in seven Tests before he was dropped from the squad that won a Test series in Australia in November when two previously uncapped left-armers, Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi were selected.

Australia-India resume bitter battle in Ranchi

Posted:

RANCHI (AFP) - Bitter rivals India and Australia resume their battle for Test supremacy Thursday in Ranchi at the start of the third match in a series that has already dragged relations close to breaking point.India won the second Test in Bangalore to leave the series tantalisingly poised at 1-1 but simmering tensions boiled over when the hosts captain accused his opposite number of abusing the decision review system (DRS).The International Cricket Council, which decided not to punish either Virat Kohli or Steve Smith over the flare-up, has called the two skippers together for clear-the-air talks ahead of the match. But former players on both sides have again been stirring things up ahead of Ranchi, a match in which India must avoid defeat if they want to win back the Border-Gavaskar trophy.Australias hopes suffered a double blow last week when allrounder Mitchell Marsh and pace spearhead Mitchell Starc were ruled out of the last two Test with injuries.Indias concerns are centred on the form of Kohli who has totalled just 40 runs in the series after scoring double centuries in the last four Test series. The meeting between Smith and Kohli was agreed to by their respective boards amid warnings the series risked degenerating into anarchy.India were furious when Smith was spotted looking up at his dressing-room for guidance on whether to seek a review of the umpires decision after being given out lbw -- a clear breach of the DRS rules. While Smith called it a one-off brain fade, Kohli said it was not an isolated incident -- a claim the Australia board branded outrageous.Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell has been among the critics of the ICCs softly-softly approach, saying things had been allowed to fester. Its been allowed to escalate over the years, and nobody is stepping in to stop it. Its going to cause a huge problem one day on the field, he wrote on the website of Australias Channel Nine network. It already causes a bit of animosity from time to time, but from the evidence so far this series it will go beyond that at some stage. The sniping has continued since Bangalore with Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin accusing Australia of resorting to tactics reminiscent of an under-10 team. But Australia have been playing their own mind games, with their leading spinner Nathan Lyon saying all the pressure is on the hosts.Everyone said that we are going to lose 4-0. Its 1-1, were one win away from regaining the trophy and thats what we are here to do, said Lyon, who took a career-best 8-50 in Bangalore. The pressure is right on India -- there is no pressure on us.India, just ahead of Australia at the top of the world rankings, had been firm favourites at the start of the series but were soundly beaten in the first match and struggled in Bangalore before sensationally dismissing the tourists for 112 in their second innings. While India should be unchanged, Australia are expected to call up Pat Cummins for Starc and Glenn Maxwell or Marcus Stoinis will replace Marsh. With India still struggling to find an effective opening combination, the hosts need Kohli to rediscover his form.Former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has suggested Kohlis outburst against Smith was due to frustration at his low scores. But Indian batting great VVS Laxman said it was only a matter of time before Kohli came good.If I was an Australian, I would be wary of a backlash, maybe in Ranchi, maybe in Dharamsala, maybe in both places, he wrote on the cricketcountry website. After Ranchi, the final Test begins in Dharamsala on March 25.Squads:India: Virat Kohli (capt), Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Karun Nair, Jayant Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhinav Mukund.Australia: Steve Smith (capt), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Jackson Bird, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve OKeefe, Matthew Renshaw, Pat Cummins, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Swepson, Matthew Wade.

Science unravels spiders' monstrous food web

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - The worlds spiders eat 400-800 million tonnes of insects every year -- as much meat and fish as humans consume over the same period, a study said Tuesday. In the first analysis of its kind, researchers used data from 65 previous studies to estimate that a total of 25 million metric tonnes of spiders exist on Earth.Taking into account how much food spiders need to survive, the team then calculated the eight-legged creatures annual haul of insects and other invertebrates. Our estimates... suggest that the annual prey kill of the global spider community is in the range of 400-800 million metric tons, they wrote in the journal The Science of Nature. This showed just how big a role spiders play in keeping pests and disease-carriers at bay -- especially in forests and grasslands where most of them live.We hope that these estimates and their significant magnitude raise public awareness and increase the level of appreciation for the important global role of spiders, the study authors wrote. For context, the study points out that humans consume about 400 million tonnes of meat and fish every year, while whales feed on 280-500 tonnes and seabirds about 70 million tonnes of seafood. There are some 45,000 known spider species, all of them meat-eating.And the critters can travel far to feed, swinging from place to place on silken threats that allow them to cover up to 30 kilometres (19 miles) in a day.Spiders are found everywhere from the Arctic to the most arid of deserts, in caves, on ocean shores, sand dunes and flood plains, the study authors said.Aside from being masterly hunters, spiders serve another important role -- as food.More than 8,000 species of birds, other predators and parasites feed exclusively on spiders, said the researchers.
