Football: Conte, Mourinho feud as Kante sinks United

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - NGolo Kante blasted Chelsea to a fiery 1-0 win over 10-man Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday as Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho feuded on the touchline.Kantes superb second-half strike that eliminated the holders came after they had midfielder Ander Herrera sent off before the interval for two fouls on Chelsea star Eden Hazard.Incensed by Uniteds aggressive approach in the first half, furious Chelsea manager Conte confronted United boss Mourinho and the pair had to be separated by the fourth official.Mourinho also whacked the ball dangerously close to Conte in the final moments as he tried to return it to the pitch, prompting another angry exchange with the Italian.Conte had the last laugh thanks to Kante and Chelseas club record 13th successive home win takes them into next months semi-finals at Wembley. The Premier League leaders, now unbeaten in their last 12 meetings with United, remain on course for the double in Contes first season since being appointed as Mourinhos permanent successor. It was another frustrating return to Stamford Bridge for former Chelsea manager Mourinho, who watched United suffer only their third defeat in all competitions since being thrashed 4-0 by his old team in October. After a draining trip to Russia for a Europa League tie last week and, with the second leg against Rostov looming on Thursday, this always looked a daunting fixture for United, who were without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial due to suspension and injury.Penned in by United in the early stages, Hazard didnt take long to emerge as Chelseas driving force and he set the tone with a balletic turn that left Chris Smalling trailing in his wake.Hazards shot was pushed away by David de Gea and it took an even better save from the United goalkeeper, plunging to his right, to keep out Gary Cahills close-range effort from the ensuing corner.Uniteds response was to target Hazard and Herrera earned a booking for a crude body-check before Phil Jones followed up with a crunching challenge.Mourinho accused Hazard of diving and he responded to a volley of abuse from Chelsea fans by raising three fingers, in reference to the number of titles he won during his two spells at the Bridge.Hazard was undeterred and launched into another incisive run past Jones that ended with a blast over the bar. When Hazard embarked on another dribble near the half-way line, Herrera reached out a leg and the slightest contact sent the Belgian tumbling.Referee Michael Oliver had seen enough and showed Herrera a red card for his second booking.Mourinho had a wry smile about the decision, but Conte wasnt amused by the treatment of Hazard and the Italian had to be pulled away from the United boss by the fourth official as he protested about Antonio Valencias foul on Marcos Alonso moments later.Chelsea fans barraged Mourinho with chants of youre not special anymore and Oliver called the managers together to tell them to calm down as the tie threatened to boil over.United had done their best to ruffle Chelsea, but Contes side kept their cool and broke the deadlock in the 51st minute thanks to the most unlikely scorer.Kante had scored just once since joining Chelsea last year, but that goal came against United and he was about to torment Mourinho again.Taking possession 25 yards from goal, Kante shifted the ball too quickly for Paul Pogba to close him down and smashed a low strike past De Gea from 25 yards.Marcus Rashford had a golden opportunity to equalise when his surge took him through on goal, but Thibaut Courtois produced a fine save.Diego Costa headed wide and Willian curled just over as Chelsea chased a second goal, but United were unable to avoid a painful exit.

Tennis: Kerber holds off Parmentier to advance at Indian Wells

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - Angelique Kerber might still get to celebrate her return to world number one with an Indian Wells title after battling past Pauline Parmentier 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to reach the fourth round on Monday.Parmentier, the world number 62 from France, had the two-time Grand Slam champion from Germany on the ropes with a break for 3-1 in the third set.But Kerber fought back with a break in the seventh game and another in a marathon 11th game that gave her a 6-5 lead and a chance to serve for the match. At the end I think it was a tough match and a high level of play from both of us, Kerber said. Im just happy to win the match.Kerber, who rose to number one in the world with her US Open triumph last year, is set to regain the summit no matter how far she goes this week thanks to the injury withdrawal of Serena Williams. She needed two hours and 33 minutes in the baking sun on Stadium Court to get past Parmentier, who until this year had never won a match at Indian Wells in five prior appearances.Kerber sealed it on her third match point -- but not before Parmentier had one last chance to break in the final game.Kerber next faces Russian Elena Vesnina, a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 winner over Hungarian Timea Babos.Fourth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep faced a dangerous third-round meeting with Frances Kristina Mladenovic, who has already lifted one trophy and reached another WTA final in 2017.Halep, who has been hampered early in the season by knee trouble, said shes just happy to have the injury behind her.Shes playing very well, but Im coming back, Halep said. I have no pressure. No expectations. And when I dont have expectation, I play better.Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, who saved three match points en route to her second-round win over Serbian veteran Jelena Jankovic, took on Czech Lucie Safarova while sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland faced Chinas Peng Shuai -- a player who has twice knocked Radwanska out of the US Open.Itll be another US Open rematch when ninth-seeded American Madison Keys takes on Japans Naomi Osaka. The two played a third-round thriller at Flushing Meadows last year, with Keys triumphing in a third-set tiebreaker after rallying from 5-1 down in the third.

CGames: Commonwealth Games seek new 2022 host after Durban debacle

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Commonwealth Games chiefs said Monday they were looking for a new venue for the 2022 edition after announcing scheduled hosts Durban had failed to meet key obligations.Last month, South Africa sports minister Fikile Mbalula indicated the government might withdraw its financial support because of the cost of staging the multi-sport event, saying we cannot live beyond our means.Following a meeting in London, Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Louise Martin said Monday: The CGF is actively exploring alternative options, including a potential replacement host. The mayor of Liverpool said last month the northwest English city would be prepared to host the 2022 Games if they were no longer in Durban.Confirmation that the Games would not be staged in Durban came from South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASOC) president Gideon Sam.In an interview with South Africas eNCA TV news from London, he said: Durban did not withdraw..,The CGF gave the country certain conditions... we were supposed to 1) sign a contract agreement, 2) have an LOC (local organising committee) in place, 3) have a CEO (chief executive officer) appointed. At the (CGF) executive meeting on Saturday they decided that it is not forthcoming and they need to move on and find another city.Durban 2022 would have been the first edition of the Commonealth Games held in Africa. The CGF will continue to have an open dialogue with the SASOC and the Republic of South Africa and remains committed to realising the shared ambitions of a future Commonwealth Games in Africa, Martin added. The CGF is fully confident and committed to delivering a successful Commonwealth Games for athletes and fans in 2022.The CGF said they had completed their review of the final information submitted by South Africa on November 30 to determine whether their proposals for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games honoured their original commitments. It is with disappointment that the detailed review has concluded that there is a significant departure from the undertakings provided in Durbans bid and as a result a number of key obligations and commitments in areas such as governance, venues, funding and risk management/assurance have not been met under the revised proposition, the statement added.Durban was named as the 2022 Games host in September 2015 but Mbalula said in February that the South African government and the CGF had still to reach agreement over costs. It does not look like we will find each other, said Mbalula. We have given it our best shot, but we cannot live beyond our means.According to authorities, a budget of 6.4 billion rand ($492 million, 465 million euros) has already been set aside for the Games, in a country battling high unemployment and poor growth. Before the CGF issued its own statement, there was an angry response from South Africas main opposition party which slammed the millions of rand already wasted on a bid where good money has been thrown after a bad idea by the countrys governing African National Congress.Zwakele Mncwango, the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) party in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region that encompasses Durban, said: This is a devastating blow to our city, and our people, who can only stand by and watch as millions of rands that could have improved our communities, delivered houses, improved services and created jobs have been wasted by the ANC government. Both the 1995 rugby World Cup and the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa are seen as milestones in the countrys efforts to promote national unity since the apartheid era.The Commonwealth Games is restricted to countries that are members of the Commonwealth, a collection of nations that were mainly once part of the British Empire and whose titular head is Britains Queen Elizabeth II,It was known as the British Empire Games when first staged in 1930.Mondays announcement came as the Queen sent the Commonwealth Games baton off from Buckingham Palace on a relay that will see it visit every member nation ahead of the 2018 edition on Australias Gold Coast.

Bangladesh hope to break losing streak in 100th Test

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Bangladesh will be looking to overcome their recent dismal form as the perennial minnows try to make their 100th Test appearance an occasion to celebrate against Sri Lanka in Colombo.Test crickets newest entrants have showed occasional promise since they were drafted into the elite cricket competition in 2000 but have mostly embarrassed their loyal fans with a series of below-par performances in the games most enduring format. They go into Wednesdays Test at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium trailing the two-match series 0-1 after last weeks crushing 259-run loss at Galle -- their 76th defeat and the fourth in a row in 99 Test matches. No other Test-playing country has lost so many times in their first 100 Test matches and the dubious honour highlights Bangladeshs struggle in the five-day format over the past 17 years. So far they have won only eight Test matches, one more than New Zealand, who had only seven wins in their first 100 Tests, though the Kiwis managed to eke out 47 draws against Bangladeshs 15.Five of Bangladeshs eight wins came at home including four against fellow strugglers Zimbabwe. And they won just three of their 46 games abroad -- two against an under-strength West Indies and one against Zimbabwe. The Tigers, as they are affectionately called by their fans, lost 21 consecutive Test matches between 2001 and 2004, the worst ever losing run by a team which no other side has even come close to emulating. They have improved in recent matches, drawing their home series against England before dragging their last four Tests into the fifth day, which many saw as a mark of success. We are doing the right thing, thats why we have been competitive in all these games, coach Chandika Hathurusinghe told reporters in Colombo on Sunday. Why have you raised your expectations? Because we are doing well, am I right? Thats what we all expect, and we are asking too much of a team that is still finding their team in Test cricket. It is a fact, he said. While Sri Lanka Cricket plans to help Bangladesh celebrate their 100th Test match, including hosting a dinner in their honour, the visitors want to focus on the game. Were trying to keep things simple because apart from the 100th Test, this is also an important game for us, Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP in Dhaka.Former captain Habibul Bashar, who played Bangladeshs inaugural Test against India in 2000, said the team must win more games to prove their detractors, including former England player Geoffrey Boycott, wrong. The best way to celebrate the (100th Test) occasion will be winning this game. Bangladesh need this win more than anything else, Bashar said.We are now a strong side in limited over matches. But in Test cricket we must translate our potential into match-winning feats.Sri Lanka: Rangana Herath (Capt), Dimuth Karunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Upul Tharanga, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, Nuwan Pradeep, Vikum Sanjaya Bandara, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Malinda Pushpakumara.Bangladesh :Mushfiqur Rahim (Capt), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Imrul Kayes Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Sabbir Rahman, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam, Mehedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mosaddek Hossain, Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Subashis Roy, Rubel Hossain.

Bangladesh axe Mahmudullah for second Sri Lanka Test

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh have dropped batsman Mahmudullah Riyad from their squad for the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, a senior cricket official said on Monday.Mahmudullah is coming back home before the second Test as he is struggling with form, chief selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board Minhajul Abedin told AFP.A fast bowler will also return though we have not decided yet who he should be, he said.Going into their 100th Test match on Wednesday at the P Saravanamuttu Stadium, Bangladesh are trailing the hosts 0-1 in a two-match series after last weeks crushing 259-run loss at Galle.Mahmudullah, who has played 33 Test matches since his debut against the West Indies in 2007, scored 8 and 0 in the two innings at Galle. The 31-year-old has scored only one half-century in last seven Tests.Opening batsman Imrul Kayes has already joined the squad in Colombo as a replacement.Imrul missed the last three Tests -- respectively against New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka -- because of a hamstring injury.

Injured Siddle misses another Nottinghamshire stint

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australia paceman Peter Siddle has pulled out of playing for Nottinghamshire for the second successive season because of an enduring back problem, the English county announced Monday.Siddle signed a two-year deal with the Midlands club to be their overseas player prior to the 2016 season, but a stress fracture in his back ruled him out of the entire domestic campaign. Now Nottinghamshire have confirmed that Siddle, who took 37 wickets at an average of just over 31 apiece during his last spell with the Trent Bridge-based side in 2014, wont be available again this year either.Siddles fellow Australia quick James Pattinson has been suggested as a possible replacement at Nottinghamshire. The 32-year-old Siddle, who has taken 211 wickets in 62 Tests, told Nottinghamshires website: I dont think Ive played this little cricket in an 18-month window since I was an 11-year-old kid and was just starting out.Thats the most frustrating thing, not playing the game that you love and your profession. But mentally Im pretty good.Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell added: I feel for Peter in particular because hes had absolutely no luck in recent years when it comes to injuries. We certainly didnt imagine, when we signed him on a two-year contract for 2016 and 2017, that he wouldnt play a single game for us during that time. Its disappointing because his competitive character and proven ability would have been a real asset for us.We never stop monitoring the situation overseas. Were always looking at who is available and who has the kind of quality we need, so were confident of quickly securing a replacement.

Niger sentences opposition figure to jail in baby trafficking trial

Posted:

NIAMEY (AFP) - Hama Amadou, an opposition leader in the Sahel state of Niger, was sentenced to a years jail Monday on a charge of baby smuggling after a one-day trial that his attorneys denounced as a fix.Amadou -- who competed against President Mahamadou Issoufou in March elections in 2016 -- had left for France and was tried in absentia. He was one of a group of people accused of smuggling babies from Nigeria via Benin to wealthy couples in Niger.Shortly before the verdict, defence lawyers walked out of court, saying legal procedures had not been upheld and that the goal was to prevent Amadou from running again for office.Hama Amadou lives in France and so all procedural documents must be sent to him France, and proceedings should be delayed, said Ali Kadri, a lawyer from the defence team. However the judge refused to grant the defences request for a delay, Kadri added.Souley Oumarou, another lawyer for Amadou, said: They want to judge Hama and condemn him... the goal is to reach a decision that will make him unable to run in the next election in 2021.Amadou had been charged for complicity in the alleged trafficking, but the charge was changed on the judges orders to that of illicitly dealing in children. The defendants refused to answer questions. His lawyers indicated they would appeal. There are means of recourse and we will use them, said attorney Boubacar Mossi.A former premier and parliamentary speaker, Amadou has been nicknamed the Phoenix for his political comebacks. He was arrested on November 14, 2015 on his return from exile, and was forced to campaign for the presidency from behind bars.He was released on medical grounds on March 16, 2016, four days before the second round of the voting, and flew to France.Issoufou went on to win with 92 percent of the run-off ballot. With the opposition boycotting the election, Amadou only got seven percent of the vote.
