Tennis: Murray claims 45th career title with Dubai triumph

Posted:

DUBAI (AFP) - Andy Murray clinched his first title of 2017 and 45th of his career as he dominated Spains Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2 to win the Dubai Tennis Championships on Saturday.World number one Murray claimed the trophy in the emirate for the first time after losing the final five years ago to Roger Federer. The Scot finished the job in just 73 minutes on the first of three match points, an untouchable service winner. Its obviously nice to finally win here, said the top seed. It feels great to take the trophy for the first time.I played a good match today. I had a bit of a slow start, but weve had a lot of late nights this week. But once I got going, I was moving well and finished strong.Murray improved his record over 35th-ranked left-hander Verdasco to 13 wins and just one loss.He was playing in his second final of 2017 after losing to Novak Djokovic in nearby Doha during the opening week of the season in January. The first three games of the contest featured breaks of serve before Murray steadied, breaking for 5-3 and taking the opening set.In the second, Murray earned a 2-1 lead as he eased to victory.Murray now makes the long flight halfway around the world to Los Angeles to prepare for the start of the Indian Wells Masters. His win on Saturday allowed Murray to become the first British champion in the 25-year history of the Dubai tournament. He was playing in his seventh final in his last eight tournaments and 14th final in his last 16 events.Despite his defeat, Verdasco will return to the top 30 for the first time since April 2015 thanks to his run to the final.I think that obviously I had, if not the toughest opponent I can have in the final, then one of them, for sure, said Verdasco.Hes number one in the world right now. It was obviously a really difficult final to win, but I came trying everything and giving everything.I said yesterday that being in the final of a 500 after five years is a great week for me and I have to take the positive things.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1 to rise to third place on table

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool punished Arsene Wengers selection gamble with a crucial 3-1 win over spluttering Arsenal on Saturday.Wenger sprang a major surprise by leaving Alexis Sanchez on the bench and the Chile forward was badly missed as Arsenal were blown away in the first half at Anfield. With Mesut Ozil also absent, due to illness, Arsenal were ill-equipped to match Jurgen Klopps fired-up side, who took the lead in the ninth minute when Roberto Firmino met Sadio Manes cross with a cool finish at the far post after sloppy Arsenal defending. There was worse to come for Wenger in the 40th minute as Firmino teed up the unmarked Mane and the Senegal winger drilled his shot past Petr Cech.Wenger sent on Sanchez at half-time and inevitably he made an impact, sending an astute pass through to Danny Welbeck, whose deft chip reduced the deficit in the 57th minute. But Georginio Wijnaldum finished a lethal Liverpool counter attack in the 90th minute to condemn Arsenal to a third defeat in their last four league matches.Liverpools second win in their last eight league games lifted them above Arsenal and Manchester City into third place. It was one of the best games weve played because of the strength of the opponent, Klopp said.Wengers fifth placed side are now two points outside the top four and that gap will grow to five if City beat Sunderland on Sunday.I felt the strikers suffered in the first half and we didnt dominate in the midfield. It is always debatable, Wenger said when asked if the Sanchez move had backfired.

Football: Guardiola embraces Man City's March madness

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola has defied convention among Premier League managers by welcoming the fixture congestion that faces Manchester City at the start of March. The Premier League heavyweights will play five important games over the first 15 days of the month, dating back to last Wednesdays FA Cup replay win over Huddersfield Town. The sequence also features an FA Cup quarter-final at Middlesbrough and the deciding leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with Monaco, as well as two Premier League fixtures. But while many of Guardiolas peers take every opportunity to complain about English footballs packed schedules, he said: I love it. I prefer to be there than to be out of the competition. It is what it is about the scandal or the problem or how many games. I am not the right guy to discuss your rules and how you decide to play the games and the amount of games. When I was young and a player at Barcelona, I used to hear for a long time the managers and players complain about it, so I am not the right guy to analyse that.If it is the schedule, we go, we play. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we go, we play.Guardiolas uncomplaining attitude comes despite a troubling lack of depth in his squad in the forward positions.Promising newcomer Gabriel Jesus could be out for the season with a broken metatarsal and Kelechi Iheanacho does not appear to fit into the managers plans. That leaves Sergio Aguero, whose phenomenal scoring record is allied to a history of injury problems, to shoulder the burden up front. The Argentina internationals future has been the subject of intense speculation following Jesuss arrival in January, but Guardiola remains relaxed both about Agueros durability and his long-term future.- I love him -================I said after the game at Huddersfield that he is really, really fit, but of course we have other players like Kelechi, said Guardiola ahead of Sundays home game with bottom club Sunderland in the Premier League.Sergio is more than ready in the last games to play. I love him, the way he played. He was involved. How he was angry, for example, with the decisions of the referee, how he reacted. How he made the transitions when he lost the ball, how he was involved, not just in scoring goals, in the way we play. So thats why I said it was his best performance since I am here.He was shouting at Pablo (Zabaleta) when he was not happy with one pass. That desire. When that happens, he is in the game. When that happens, Sergio really is an unbelievable player. Not just in the box, in all terms. Thats why we were so happy and I know that he is so happy, despite what people say. I know he is so happy.Guardiola was equally upbeat about the long-term future of club captain Vincent Kompany, who is coming to the end of yet another season ravaged by injury.Kompany is fit again after three games out with a leg injury, the latest in a litany of fitness problems, but his manager sees no reason why he cannot play a regular role again in the future. Its our desire. Thats what we want, what he wants, definitely, said Guardiola. But I am optimistic about that because it was in a training session, the last moment, that that happened, a little muscle thing.Im optimistic. Why not? We have good doctors here, good physios. Today the medicine is much, much better. Why wont he be able to come back regularly for a long, long time, a whole season? Im pretty sure that will happen.

Bayern Munich go seven points clear on top of Bundesliga

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich went seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-0 win at Cologne on Saturday in a perfect warm-up for their midweek Champions League trip to Arsenal.Spain internationals Javi Martinez and Juan Bernat gave Bayern a comfortable two-goal lead before substitute Franck Ribery netted a third on 90 minutes. The result allowed Bayern to extend their lead over second-placed RB Leipzig, who drew 2-2 at Augsburg on Friday.Bayern now head for Arsenal on Tuesday for their Champions League last 16 return tie, holding a 5-1 first-leg lead. Were happy, because that was an important result for us, said Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti. We had problems at the start, because they were well organised, but we made more room after going 1-0 up and put in a good second-half performance.Cologne earned a 1-1 draw in Munich last October, but there was no denying Bayern this time.Martinez headed home Arturo Vidals cross after Bayern worked a short-corner routine on 25 minutes.Bayern doubled their lead when Thomas Mueller spotted Bernat unmarked to shoot home with the help of a deflection on 48 minutes.Bernat then turned provider just before the final whistle when his cross was driven home by Ribery.Borussia Dortmund will be without Germany winger Marco Reus for Wednesdays Champions League last 16 return leg at home to Benfica after he limped out of Saturdays 6-2 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice to leave him with 21 league goals in as many games, two ahead of Bayerns Robert Lewandowski, but the win was dampened by a suspected tear to Reus left hamstring. Its sad news, he (Reus) has been playing very consistently for weeks and at a high level, said Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel. Its an enormous loss which tarnishes the win, he added with Dortmund looking to overturn a 1-0 defeat from the first leg at Benfica.Dortmund wasted no time as Ousmane Dembele gave them a sixth minute lead before Aubameyang was left unmarked to head home on 26 minutes.Leverkusen pulled a goal back when Kevin Volland held off Dortmund defender Soktratis Papastathopoulos and drilled his shot inside the near post just after the break.Dembeles cross was headed home by Aubameyang, again at the far post, to put Dortmund 3-1 up on 69 minutes.Brazilian defender Wendell curled a free-kick home to make it 3-2 on 74 minutes before Borussias US international teenager Christian Pulisic, on for Reus, made it 4-2 on 77 minutes. It turned into a rout when Andre Schuerrle, who replaced Aubameyang, netted a penalty on 85 minutes before Portugals Raphael Guerreiro smashed home a late sixth as Dortmund consolidated third spot.Fourth-placed Hoffenheim enjoyed a 5-2 thrashing of second-from-bottom Ingolstadt as Hungary striker Adam Szalai netted twice.Bottom side Darmstadt lost 2-0 at Werder Bremen with Germany striker Max Kruse scoring twice in the second-half.Darmstadt coach Torsten Frings had a miserable return to Bremen, who sacked him as assistant trainer in September.Wolfsburgs new head coach Andries Jonker, with Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg as his assistant, picked up a point on debut with a 1-1 draw at Mainz.Mario Gomezs goal for Wolfsburg was cancelled out by a first-half equaliser from Mainzs Colombia international Jhon Cordoba.Borussia Moenchengladbach climbed two places to eighth with an impressive 4-2 win at home to Schalke as US international Fabian Johnson netted twice as Schalke drop to 13th.Brazil striker Raffael and Swedens Oscar Wendt also netted to give resurgent Gladbach a fourth straight win.

Messi scores twice as Barca thrash Celta Vigo 5-0

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi dazzled with two goals and two assists as Barcelona thrashed Celta Vigo 5-0 in their first game since coach Luis Enrique announced he will leave at the end of the season.Real Madrid remain just one point behind Barca at the top of La Liga and with a game in hand as Karim Benzema scored twice in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in a 4-1 win at Eibar. An inspired performance by Messi on Saturday raised Barca hopes of a miraculous Champions League fightback from 4-0 down against Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday.Beforehand the tie is lost, but with some marvellous circumstances...we can get ourselves back into the tie if we play very well, Enrique told Spanish TV station Movistar. And the champions showed no ill effects from Enriques pending departure in arguably their best performance of the season.I am very confident we are going to have a great end to the season, Enrique added.Messi opened the scoring in sensational style on 24 minutes as he turned just inside the Celta half before skipping past a host of helpless defenders and stroking the ball home from the edge of the area. However, the finish for Barcas second was equally as majestic as Messis pass was dinked over Sergio Alvarez from close range by Neymar. The hosts dominance was rewarded with a third just before the hour mark, although there was more than a touch of fortune about it as Ivan Rakitic was clearly offside when he pounced on Rafinhas layoff.Messi was the provider once more for the fourth as his low cross was turned home by Samuel Umtiti for his first Barca goal. And the five-time world player of the year produced another individual effort to end the scoring as it started as he cut in from the right before firing the ball inside Alvarezs near post.

Football: Trouble for Ibrahimovic as Man United held

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic was at the centre of controversy as Manchester United were held 1-1 by 10-man Bournemouth in an extraordinary Premier League match at Old Trafford on Saturday.Ibrahimovic, Uniteds 26-goal top scorer, was fortunate not to be sent off before seeing a penalty saved as Jose Mourinhos side missed the opportunity to move into the Champions League places.Marcos Rojo gave the home side the lead with his first league goal for the club, before former United forward Joshua King equalised from the penalty spot five minutes from the end of the first half. But the match centred on a series of incidents in quick succession at the end of the half, in which both Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings were lucky to escape red cards.Bournemouth defender Mings appeared to stamp on the head of the former Paris Saint-Germain forward.Ibrahimovic, already on a yellow card, then elbowed the centre-back in the face seconds later, but received only a telling off from referee Kevin Friend. Both Ibrahimovic and Mings are likely to face retrospective disciplinary action from the Football Association. In the ensuing melee, Bournemouth midfielder Andrew Surman shoved Ibrahimovic and was shown a second yellow card. But Surman was only shown a red card after United left-back Luke Shaw reminded Friend he had already been booked.Artur Boruc, the visitors 37-year-old goalkeeper, had a fine game, making a series of saves against a United side who dominated. His best moment was keeping out Ibrahimovics penalty with just under 20 minutes to go, getting down low to his right to push the ball aside. The point means United remain in sixth place, where they have remained since early November, while Bournemouth ended a run of four successive league defeats.Bournemouth looked as if they would be overwhelmed in the first half-hour of a match that reached boiling point as the interval approached.- Increasingly heated -=======================United created a host of chances, with the recalled Wayne Rooney, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial going close. The visitors resistance was broken midway through the half as Rojo deflected in Antonio Valencias cross-shot to score his first league goal for United. But Bournemouth, who had spurned one early chance as Benik Afobe slipped when clear, drew level five minutes before half-time.King struck a penalty into David de Geas top right-hand corner after Phil Jones had brought down Marc Pugh.Boruc then made further fine reaction saves to deny Rooney and Ibrahimovic, before the matchs two key flashpoints occurred in the final moments of the half.Ibrahimovics battle with Mings had become increasingly heated and the former Sweden striker was fuming after his opponent appeared to stamp on the side of his head amid a scramble.Ibrahimovic responded seconds later by elbowing Mings in the face. Having already been booked, the striker escaped with just a lecture from Friend.Bouremouths sense of injustice was then heightened as Surman, booked for an earlier challenge on Shaw, was dismissed.Jason Tindall, the Bournemouth assistant manager, first ranted at the assistant referee, then marched onto the field at half-time to usher his players away from Friend.Rooney saw a clever shot on the turn deflected just over and Gosling was relieved to see a header back towards his own goal drop just wide.Boruc was then alert once more, flying to his left to tip aside Pogbas 25-yard curler as it headed towards the top corner.Mourinho made a triple substitution with 20 minutes to go in an attempt to force the win, sending on Jesse Lingard, Marouane Fellaini and Marcus Rashford for Shaw, Michael Carrick and Rooney.Within seconds, United were awarded a penalty as Adam Smith handled Pogbas header back across goal. Ibrahimovic stepped up, but Boruc saved superbly.

Football: Benzema puts Ronaldo-less Madrid back on top

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema scored twice as Real Madrid made light of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bales absence to move back to the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win at Eibar on Saturday.Benzema proved decisive when he was needed most by the European champions without his usual strike partners as the Frenchman finished twice from close range inside the first 25 minutes.James Rodriguez completed a perfect first-half for the visitors from Benzemas low cross.Marco Asensio grabbed Madrids fourth before Ruben Pena pulled back a consolation for Eibar.Madrid lead Barcelona by two points, but the Catalans can go back to La Ligas summit with victory at home to Celta Vigo later on Saturday.Despite the absence of Ronaldo and Bale through injury and suspension respectively, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane rested a host of other first-team regulars ahead of Tuesdays Champions League last 16, return leg away to Napoli.Madrid travel to Italy carrying a 3-1 lead, but Zidane took no risks as Marcelo, Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos were left on the bench. Those coming in rewarded Zidanes faith in the depth of his squad with the often sidelined Rodriguez a constant threat. The opener arrived on 14 minutes when Asensio was played in down the left by Rodriguez and his low cross found Benzema unmarked at the far post.Benzemas first effort was well saved by Yoel, but the Madrid number nine followed up to register just his second league goal since October. The visitors nearly had a second moments later when Rodriguezs low cross was just flicked out of Benzemas reach by the Eibar goalkeeper. However, Madrid did soon double their advantage when Rodriguezs wicked in-swinging free-kick left Benzema with the simplest of tasks to knock the ball home from point-blank range.Four minutes later the roles were reversed as this time Benzemas low cross was swept into the far corner on the stretch by Rodriguez for his fifth goal of the season.Only Yoel prevented Eibar, who had come into the game in fine form in seventh in the table, from further punishment before half-time as he made a fine double save from Benzema and Asensio.Benzema should have had his first hat-trick of the season three minutes into the second-half but pulled his shot well wide from Nachos cushioned header.Asensio had unselfishly squared to Rodriguez in the move for the fourth goal, but after the Colombians effort came off the post, Asensio expertly dispatched the rebound from a narrow angle.Eibar did finally have something to cheer 18 minutes from time when Pena beat Danilo to Pedro Leons cross to the far post to fire in a consolation.
