Tennis: Murray claims 45th career title with Dubai triumph

DUBAI (AFP) - Andy Murray clinched his first title of 2017 and 45th of his career as he dominated Spains Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2 to win the Dubai Tennis Championships on Saturday.World number one Murray claimed the trophy in the emirate for the first time after losing the final five years ago to Roger Federer.The Scot finished the job in just 73 minutes on the first of three match points, an untouchable service winner.Its obviously nice to finally win here, said the top seed. It feels great to take the trophy for the first time.I played a good match today. I had a bit of a slow start, but weve had a lot of late nights this week. But once I got going, I was moving well and finished strong.Murray improved his record over 35th-ranked left-hander Verdasco to 13 wins and just one loss.He was playing in his second final of 2017 after losing to Novak Djokovic in nearby Doha during the opening week of the season in January.The first three games of the contest featured breaks of serve before Murray steadied, breaking for 5-3 and taking the opening set.In the second, Murray earned a 2-1 lead as he eased to victory.Murray now makes the long flight halfway around the world to Los Angeles to prepare for the start of the Indian Wells Masters.His win on Saturday allowed Murray to become the first British champion in the 25-year history of the Dubai tournament.He was playing in his seventh final in his last eight tournaments and 14th final in his last 16 events.Despite his defeat, Verdasco will return to the top 30 for the first time since April 2015 thanks to his run to the final.I think that obviously I had, if not the toughest opponent I can have in the final, then one of them, for sure, said Verdasco.Hes number one in the world right now. It was obviously a really difficult final to win, but I came trying everything and giving everything.I said yesterday that being in the final of a 500 after five years is a great week for me and I have to take the positive things.

Indian member of PSL production team happy to be in Lahore

Messi scores twice as Barca thrash Celta Vigo 5-0

Football: Benzema puts Ronaldo-less Madrid back on top

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema scored twice as Real Madrid made light of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bales absence to move back to the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win at Eibar on Saturday.Benzema proved decisive when he was needed most by the European champions without his usual strike partners as the Frenchman finished twice from close range inside the first 25 minutes.James Rodriguez completed a perfect first-half for the visitors from Benzemas low cross.Marco Asensio grabbed Madrids fourth before Ruben Pena pulled back a consolation for Eibar.Madrid lead Barcelona by two points, but the Catalans can go back to La Ligas summit with victory at home to Celta Vigo later on Saturday.Despite the absence of Ronaldo and Bale through injury and suspension respectively, Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane rested a host of other first-team regulars ahead of Tuesdays Champions League last 16, return leg away to Napoli.Madrid travel to Italy carrying a 3-1 lead, but Zidane took no risks as Marcelo, Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos were left on the bench.Those coming in rewarded Zidanes faith in the depth of his squad with the often sidelined Rodriguez a constant threat.The opener arrived on 14 minutes when Asensio was played in down the left by Rodriguez and his low cross found Benzema unmarked at the far post.Benzemas first effort was well saved by Yoel, but the Madrid number nine followed up to register just his second league goal since October.The visitors nearly had a second moments later when Rodriguezs low cross was just flicked out of Benzemas reach by the Eibar goalkeeper.However, Madrid did soon double their advantage when Rodriguezs wicked in-swinging free-kick left Benzema with the simplest of tasks to knock the ball home from point-blank range.Four minutes later the roles were reversed as this time Benzemas low cross was swept into the far corner on the stretch by Rodriguez for his fifth goal of the season.Only Yoel prevented Eibar, who had come into the game in fine form in seventh in the table, from further punishment before half-time as he made a fine double save from Benzema and Asensio.Benzema should have had his first hat-trick of the season three minutes into the second-half but pulled his shot well wide from Nachos cushioned header.Asensio had unselfishly squared to Rodriguez in the move for the fourth goal, but after the Colombians effort came off the post, Asensio expertly dispatched the rebound from a narrow angle.Eibar did finally have something to cheer 18 minutes from time when Pena beat Danilo to Pedro Leons cross to the far post to fire in a consolation.

Foreigner players Sammy, Samuels, Malan and Jordan reach Lahore

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Peshawar Zalmis four foreinger players Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Dawid Malan and Chris Jordan reached Lahore for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final, reported Dunya News.The foreigner players reached Allama Iqbal International Airport at 1:30 am from EK-622 flight and were taken to their hotel with security forces, police around them.Samuels, Sammy from West Indies, Jordan, Malan from England would represent Zalmi in the PSL final against Quetta Gladiators. Two foreigner players of Quetta, Sean Ervine of Zimbabwe and Anamul Haq of Bangladesh also reached Lahore.Anamul Haq was satisfied with the security arrangements as Quetta Gladiators posted a video of him on their Facebook page. Me, brother never met Ayyan, will quit politics if she says so: Malik

KARACHI: (Dunya News) – Former Interior Minister Senator Rehman Malik has on Saturday said that he or his brother never met the model Ayyan Ali. He said that he would quit politics if Ayyan Ali said on oath that she ever met him or his brother, reported Dunya News.Talking to Wajahat Saeed Khan on Dunya News program Mahaaz, Rehman Malik said that two of former Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) prime ministers were still presenting themselves before National Accountability Bureau (NAB) while former Petroleum Minister was in jail over the allegations of financing terrorism but the current government didn’t have to face such situation.Malik said that the entire Ayyan Ali case was a made up case against PPP. “Ayyan Ali is now free. Just go and interview her, put Quran in her hand and ask her if she has ever met Rehman Malik, does she have any links with Rehman Malik or his brother Khalid Malik; if she says this on record, I will leave politics, not because we didn’t have any links with her but because the way the campaign was run against us”, he said.Rehman Malik also discussed the security crisis in Pakistan during the show. Man hurls shoe at Sheikh Rasheed in Lahore

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The supporters of Sheikh Rasheed welcomed him at the Lahore Railway Station on Saturday. Also, Railways DS presented flowers bouquet to him which was sent by the Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique.While talking to the journalists, he said that the Railways Minister took the right decision to send flowers. Sheikh Rasheed is all set to arrive at the PSL final in Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. He said that he was at war with Nawaz Sharif, not cricket.He considered it a wise decision to hold the PSL 2017 final match in Punjab’s provincial capital.The matter escalated when an elderly man hurled his shoe at the lawmaker. The Railway Police quickly took the person named Fakeer Muhammad aka Baba Lakh Pati into custody.
