Football: Schuerrle nets twice for five-star Germany

Posted:

BAKU (AFP) - Germany leaked a first goal since July but extended their perfect record in World Cup qualifiers to five straight wins as Andre Schuerrle scored twice in Sundays 4-1 victory in Azerbaijan.First-half goals by Schuerrle, Thomas Mueller and Mario Gomez put the world champions 3-1 up at the break, although Azerbaijan midfielder Dimitrij Nazarov, who plays in Germany, had netted an early equaliser to the delight of the home crowd. It was the first goal Germany had conceded following seven successive clean sheets -- a national team record -- dating back to their 2-0 defeat against France in the semi-finals of Euro 2016.This was Germanys eighth straight win, including qualifiers and friendlies, since losing to Les Bleus in Marseille last July.It was a hard bit of work, we lost a few too many balls and were a bit too loose in the challenge, admitted Schuerrle. But we did well to shut the door by making it 3-1 at the break.Schuerrle added a late second goal to reward the faith shown by Germanys head coach Joachim Loew despite a series of below-par displays for Borussia Dortmund. It does me good to score goals, but its up to me to take my performances back to Germany and repeat them for Dortmund, added Schuerrle. The Baku win means Germany stay top of Group C with five wins from five, having scored 20 goals and conceded just once.Germany were near full strength, but with captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out with a calf injury, Bayer Leverkusens Bernd Leno made only his fourth appearance between the posts.Juventus defensive midfielder Sami Khedira took over the captains armband in Neuers absence. The world champions went ahead with the first clear chance.Toni Kroos spotted space on the left wing for Jonas Hector to whip in a cross which Schuerrle stabbed home with 19 minutes gone.It was Schuerrles first Germany goal since his hat-trick in the 7-0 thrashing of minnows Gibraltar in June 2015.However, Azerbaijan fought back and drew level on 31 minutes.Nazarov, who plays for Bundesliga second division club Erzgebirge Aue, finished a counter-attack with a superb strike. It stayed 1-1 for only five minutes as Schuerrle restored the lead by poaching possession and snuffing out an Azerbaijan counter attack. He placed his pass in behind the defence for Mueller to convert on 36 minutes. It was Muellers fifth goal in five 2018 qualifiers this season, although he has netted just two Bundesliga goals for Bayern Munich during the same period.Gomez then made his height count as the 1.89-metre (six foot, two inches) striker outjumped Azerbaijans right-back Magomed Mirzabekoto, who stands 1.68m (five foot, five inches) tall, to head home Joshua Kimmichs cross on 45 minutes.Mesut Ozil replaced Gomez for the final 30 minutes but the tempo dropped, although Khedira went close when his shot was saved with 15 minutes left.Schuerrle sealed the win on 81 minutes by converting another good cross from the left by Hector.

Tennis: Nadal rallies to reach fourth round in Miami

MIAMI (AFP) - Rafael Nadal came back from an awful first set to defeat Germanys Philipp Kohlschreiber 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 and advance to the fourth round of the Miami Open on Sunday. The Spaniard, playing his 1,000th ATP match, suffered just the 14th 0-6 set of his career, claiming just 33 percent of first serve points won and making a string of unforced errors. After looking badly out of sorts, Nadal was able to rediscover his form in the second set and in the end ran out a comfortable winner.Nadal will next face Frances Nicolas Mahut, who beat Argentine Guido Pella 6-4 6-3.Japans Kei Nishikori came through a tough test against Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (7/2), 6-7(5/7) 6-1.Last years beaten finalist, Nishikori will face Argentine Federico Del Bonis, who beat Germanys Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 (7/5), 6-1.Verdasco has yet to post a win against a top ten opponent this year but showed plenty of spirit in a two hours 44 minute contest on center court at Crandon Park fighting back to win a second set tie-break.But Nishikori stepped up in the third, running away with the set to ensure his progress.I knew it was going to be a tough one, Nishikori said. Fernando is a very solid player. He has a great serve and great groundstrokes. I knew it was going to be long rallies. But it was a shame when I was up a break in both first and second sets and both went to 7-6. I made some mistakes when I was up a break. But in the third set I was very focused, he added.Injury-plagued world number five Milos Raonic pulled out of the tournament shortly before his match against American Jared Donaldson, citing a recurrence of a hamstring injury.Canadas Raonic originally suffered the injury in the semi-final at Delray Beach and was forced to forfeit the final against American Jack Sock. He then missed this months Masters event at Indian Wells.

Tennis: Top seed Kerber advances at Miami Open

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - World number one Angelique Kerber came back from being a break down in both sets to beat American Shelby Rogers 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday and move into the fourth round at the Miami Open. With no sign of the rain that interrupted the past two days on Key Biscayne, Kerber was joined in the next round by Britains Johanna Konta and Russias Svetlana Kuznetsova who both had comfortable wins.Although ranked 61st in the world Rogers has beaten Karolina Pliskova, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and Daria Kasatkina in the last year and had her eye on beating the top seed.An upset looked possible when the American won the first three games of the opening set but Kerber recovered to win six of the next seven games. It was a similar story in the second set where Rogers, having saved a break point, hit some good winners to go 4-2 up only for the German to power back and secure a fourth round meeting with Japanese qualifier Risa Ozaki who beat German Julia Georges 7-6(7/5), 6-3.Seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, beaten finalist in Indian Wells, was broken early by confident America Taylor Townsend.Townsend had beaten experienced Italian Roberta Vinci in the previous round but Kuznetsova wasnt about to be another victim and took four straight games to take the set and then never looked in danger.Tenth seed Konta beat 57th ranked Pauline Parmentier of France, 6-4, 6-0 looking in better form than in her laboured opening, three-set, two hours 40 minute win against Belarussian Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The contest turned in Kontas direction when she converted her third break point to take a 4-3 lead in the first set and the Australian-born Briton lost just five points in the second set.Conditions were much improved on the gusty winds of her opening game but Konta said she was pleased with both victories. My first round was very good because I could get through a difficult situation. Today was a cleaner match, so in that sense, it was also a good performance, she said.

Golf: Johnson holds off Rahm for WGC Match Play crown

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Dustin Johnson held on to beat Spains Jon Rahm 1 up on Sunday to win the World Golf Championships Match Play crown and become the first player to win all four WGC events.World number one Johnson was 5 up through eight holes but withstood a furious rally by the 22-year-old Spaniard, who was trying to become the youngest winner of one of the elite WGC events.Rahms comeback bid fell short when he was unable to birdie the 18th to extend the match. Johnson rolled in a four-footer for a par to halve the hole and seal the win.Johnson, the reigning US Open champion, won the WGC HSBC Champions in 2013, the WGC Cadillac Championship in 2015, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in 2016 and the WGC Mexico Championship earlier this month. His wins in Mexico and on Sunday in Austin, Texas, saw him join Tiger Woods as the only players to win back-to-back WGC titles. The victory capped a dominant week for Johnson, who never trailed in any of his seven matches.Johnson took the final by the throat when he won four straight holes from the third through the six as the ever-more frustrated Rahm struggled with the putter. But Rahm kept his nerve after falling 5 down when Johnson won the eighth with a par.And the young Spaniard, who won his first US PGA Tour title at Torrey Pines this year, won the 13th, 15th and 16th with birdies -- rolling in a clutch 32-footer at the 16th.After both parred the par-three 17th, they went to 18 with Johnson 1 up.Johnson hadnt been beyond the 16th hole until Sunday. He also had to hang on for a 1 up win over Japans Hideto Tanihara in the semi-finals on Sunday morning.I definitely didnt play my best today in the first match or the second, Johnson said. So, to win both those matches not having my best stuff is definitely a positive. And Im definitely proud of the way I hung in there and played tough and just tried to never give away holes, which I felt like I did a pretty good job of.Johnsons two latest WGC triumphs follow a victory in the Genesis Open at Riviera in February that propelled the American to number one in the world. Hes the first player since Rory McIlroy in 2014 to win three consecutive US PGA Tour starts.Ive got a lot of confidence now -- confidence in my game and confidence in myself, Johnson said.Rahms bogeys at the third and fourth saw Johnson take a quick lead, which the American built on with birdies to win the fifth and sixth holes before another bogey from a clearly frustrated Rahm at the eighth saw Johnson go 5 up.I was trying to do the best I could, but just things werent happening, unfortunately for me, Rahm said of the front nine.Rahm narrowed the deficit when he won the ninth with a par, and won the 10th when Johnson three-putted for bogey. After both bombed their drives more than 400 yards down the fairway at the 12th, Johnson ended up with a two-putt birdie while Rahms second shot landed in a bunker and he ended up with a par.At 13, Rahm drove the green an two-putted for a birdie that left him just 3 down again. He cut the deficit with another birdie at 15, then rolled in his birdie bomb at 16 after recovering from a tee shot into the trees.Im very proud of what I did, very proud for what I stood for on the course, Rahm said. So honestly, as sad as I might emotionally feel, Im extremely happy with what I did.Rahm had beaten Bill Haas 3 and 2 in the semi-finals, and Haas went on to beat Tanihara 2 and 1 in the consolation final.Tanihara joined Toru Taniguchi as the lone players from Asia to reach the semi-finals of the event, and he came away from an outstanding week with a Masters berth.

Squash: Senior service as Gaultier wins British Open title

Posted:

KINGSTON UPON HULL (AFP) - Gregory Gaultier became the oldest winner of the British Open since Hashim Khan in the late 1950s when he beat Nick Matthew, the oldest finalist since that era, in a four-game final on Sunday. The 34-year-old Frenchmans 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 win over the 36-year-old Englishman earned him his third British Open title and made him the oldest ever world number one on a ranking system which began in the 1970s.There is a lot of emotion in winning such an old and great title as this, said Gaultier.I am near the end of my career -- six months ago I was thinking of hanging my rackets up, but winning this will give me extra motivation.Gaultier destroyed opponents so efficiently in the earlier rounds that Matthew came to the final having competed for two-and-a-half hours longer than his rival.By the third game his movement was beginning to slow. There was trouble for Gaultier when he was admonished by the referee for taking his opponents space late in the second and warned that next time he would lose a conduct stroke. But gone are the moments when Gaultier would sometimes lose concentration, and an immediate surge of eight points in a row which carried him to 6-0 in the third game irrevocably swung the direction of the match.Laura Massaro became the first English woman in 58 years to defend the British Open twice when she beat surprise finalist, Sarah-Jane Perry, her seventh-seeded compatriot, by 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 11-6.It was Perrys first World Series final and by far the biggest final of her career, whereas the 33-year-old Massaro was a former British Open champion, a former world champion, a former world number one, and was playing her fourth British Open final in five years. The disparity in experience was soon apparent. The fifth-seeded Massaro had also beaten the two top Egyptians, the world number one Nour El Sherbini and the former world number one Raneem El Welily, and was the more consistent player, more often keeping the ball tight, and waiting more patiently before attempting attacking forays which involved risk. She was not though as comfortable as she looked.I tried to relax, or be as relaxed as I could be, but I was never one hundred percent comfortable, she admitted.Sarah-Jane has improved a lot this season, and she changes direction (of her shots) so much, so Im thrilled to have won this again. With England producing three finalists for the first time in 26 years, the home countrys apparent decline seemed at least to have been granted a bright sunset. It was the first time in four years that Egypt -- which has three of the top five men in the top ten, and three of the top four women -- had failed to produce a finalist. However, the outcomes may be very different at the World Championships at El Gouna on the Red Sea in a fortnights time.

Squash: Massaro joins exclusive English club with British Open success

KINGSTON UPON HULL (AFP) - Laura Massaro became the first English woman in 58 years to win the British Open twice when she beat surprise finalist, Sarah-Jane Perry, her seventh-seeded compatriot, 11-8, 11-8, 5-11, 11-6 on Sunday. It was Perrys first World Series final and by far the biggest final of her career, whereas the 33-year-old Massaro was a former British Open champion, a former world champion, a former world number one, and playing her fourth British Open final in five years. The fifth-seeded Massaro had also beaten the two top Egyptians, the world number one Nour El Sherbini and the former world number one Raneem El Welily, and was the more consistent player, more often keeping the ball tight, and waiting more patiently before attempting attacking forays. She was not though quite as comfortable as she looked.I tried to relax, or be as relaxed as I could be, but I was never one hundred percent comfortable, she admitted.Sarah-Jane has improved a lot this season, and she changes direction (of her shots) so much, so Im thrilled to have won this again. The value of Massaros tighter, more disciplined game began to show half way through the first game, when it started to prevail over Perrys adventurous shot-making, starving the younger womans dangerous backhand volley.Perry also found it hard to get the ball past Massaro, who increasingly dominated the centre of the court, and in trying to escape these strictures the younger player sent a side-wall angle, a backhand drop, and a volley drop down, soon going three points down in the second game.Perry tried to play out the rallies a little longer before attempting attacks, in an attempt to repair the deteriorating situation, but a straight drop from a deep position got Massaro to 9-6 and the second game was soon hers after that.In the third however, Perry got herself into better positions before making her boldest attacks, and it enabled her to surge to 6-3, and then take three points in a row from 8-5, to extend the match to a fourth game. These were the bold shots, the volleys, cross court flicks and tight drops which had overcame Nicol David, the legendary nine-year former world number one, in four games, in the semi-finals.In the fourth game however Massaro also showed her capacity for absorbing pressure. As the rallies began to lengthen again she had to search harder for ways to prise out the points. She reached 7-4 with a wall clinger which Perry was unable to scrape successfully off, and 9-4 with a disguised backhand to a good length.Soon after that she was celebrating her triumph with a little meditation.Later Nick Matthew, the oldest British Open finalist since Hashim Khan in the 1950s, was trying to make it the first time since 1939 that there had been two British or English winners -- he is taking on Greg Gaultier, the former British Open winner from France.

Lyon roars for Australia in fourth India Test

Posted:

DHARAMSALA (AFP) - Off-spinner Nathan Lyon took four key wickets to fashion a late comeback for Australia on an engrossing second day in the decisive fourth Test against India on Sunday. The 29-year-old made the most of a lively track at Dharamsala, which is hosting its first Test, to return a rich haul of 4-67 in the final session of play.Fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood (1-40) and Pat Cummins (1-59) also bowled their hearts out during frugal spells to restrict the hosts to 248-6 at stumps.India trail by 52 runs with four wickets in hand after Australia made 300 in their first knock, largely thanks to a fine 111 from captain Steve Smith. At stumps Wriddhiman Saha was batting on 10 with Ravindra Jadeja on 16.With the series in the balance at 1-1, the games two top-ranked sides have been locked in a battle of attrition, with neither willing to give an inch.I reckon it is an unbelievable feeling to be pretty evenly poised after day two, Lyon said after the days play.I know we probably left a few runs out there, but to have India 240-6 odd after a pretty good day in the field, I am quite happy to be honest.Coming over here, everyone wrote us off and to be in this position in the last Test at 1-1 and the pressure slightly on India is fantastic. The Indian batsmen were guilty of squandering good starts in a match they must win to regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy. But Lokesh Rahul (60) and Cheteshwar Pujara (57) batted patiently to put on 87 for the second wicket, the best partnership so far for the hosts. Its by far the best wicket we have played on, theres something in it for the spinners and the fast bowlers as well. The ball kept swinging the whole day, said Rahul. If you spend some time in the middle its really good to bat on. All of us got starts but we couldnt convert. But we are happy at the end of the day with 250-odd runs for six wickets. It wasnt really the worst day for us.Ajinkya Rahane, standing in for injured skipper Virat Kohli, also looked set for a big score but ended up gifting a catch to Smith off Lyon for 46 off 104 balls.Ravichandran Ashwin (30) was adjudged lbw off Lyon. The all-rounder opted for a review but the ball tracker showed the stumps would have been hit.Lyon, who had conceded 163 runs while taking just one wicket in the previous drawn Test at Ranchi, remained wicketless in the first two sessions. But the bowler, whose experience as a curator gave him a sharp understanding of pitches, brought Australia back into the game in the final session through some classic old-fashioned spin.Lyons first victim was Pujara, who was coming into the match on the back of an epic innings of 202 at Ranchi.Pujara tried to defend but the ball ripped back in to hit the glove and then lob up to short leg, where Peter Handscomb pouched an easy catch.Pujaras 57 took his run tally past 400 in the series, behind only Smith who has 482 runs from seven innings. The Indians would have been in further trouble but for Matthew Renshaw who dropped two catches, much to the frustration of the toiling bowlers. But the Aussies have the chance to run through Indias tail with the second new ball on Monday morning and grab the crucial first-innings advantage.Day two also saw words being exchanged with long stares on a couple of occasions. But mostly the players remained within the bounds of good behaviour in what has otherwise been a fractious series.Australia, who triumphed at home against India in 2014-15, need just a draw to retain the trophy.

Shadab stars on debut as Pakistan ease past Windies

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Shadab Khan produced an outstanding debut performance as Pakistan completed a comfortable six-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first fixture of a four-match Twenty20 international series at Kensington Oval on Sunday.Put in on a bright, breezy afternoon, the world champion hosts were restricted to 111 for eight off their allotted 20 overs with the tourists knocking off the runs with almost three overs to spare to extend their T20 winning streak over their rivals to four following a 3-0 sweep in the United Arab Emirates last September.Shoaib Maliks unbeaten 38 and a 46-run fourth-wicket partnership with Babar Azam ensured Pakistan reached their target with relative comfort although they will be again concerned about the top orders inability to take control of a modest challenge.Brought on as the fifth bowler when the West Indies batted in what looked like ideal conditions, 18-year-old Shadabs mesmerising mixture of leg-breaks and googlies earned him figures of three for seven, the most economical ever in the history of T20 international cricket by a debutant in a complete four-over spell.I gained a lot of confidence from my performance in this years Pakistan Super League, said man of the match Shadab.I just hope I can continue from this good start and make more important contributions for Pakistan.West Indies only managed to get into three figures thanks to an unbeaten 34 from captain Carlos Brathwaite. He dominated a 37-run eighth-wicket partnership with fellow-Barbadian Jason Holder, who was dismissed off the last delivery of the innings. Its back to the drawing board again for us because its up to these same players to look at themselves in the mirror and honestly assess whats going wrong, said Brathwaite. At least I was able to get some runs which took some of the pressure off me personally.Shadab removed opening batsman and wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton and dangerous middle-order strokeplayer Lendl Simmons in his first over before adding the scalp of Sunil Narine in his second.Kamran Akmal, back in the national T20 side after an absence of three years, deprived the newcomer a fourth wicket when he failed to hold on to a diving catch at backward point offered by Kieron Pollard. For all the struggles they faced against Pakistans talented and varied bowling attack, the home sides troubles started when Evin Lewis was run out in the third over of the match by Ahmed Shehzads direct hit from 40 metres out as the batsman attempted to complete a second run.Marlon Samuels was unfortunate to be adjudged leg-before to Pakistans other slow bowler, Imad Wasim. Thereafter it was a combination of impatience and poor shot selection which the visitors capitalised upon.Unlike the impressive showing by Pakistans newcomer, Rovman Powell failed to make any impact on his T20 international debut for the West Indies. An all-rounder in the mould of fellow-Jamaican Andre Russell, who is now serving a one-year suspension from the game, Powell was trapped leg-before by medium-pacer Hasan Ali in the midst of the batting slide that effectively killed off any chance of the home side being competitive. There is no letting up from here, was Sarfraz Ahmeds definitive statement after the win that makes him just the third captain to commence his tenure at the helm in T20 internationals with five consecutive wins after compatriot Misbah-ul-Haq and Sri Lankas Kumar Sangakkara.
