Black Cap Boult out of S.Africa third Test

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - New Zealands injury woes continue to mount ahead of the third Test against South Africa, with bowling spearhead Trent Boult ruled out Friday after failing to recover from a groin injury.Boults new ball partner Tim Southee is already out of the Test in Hamilton with a torn hamstring and the Black Caps are also missing batting stalwart Ross Taylor.Boult missed the second Test, won by South Africa by eight wickets, because of groin soreness and chief selector Gavin Larsen said he had failed a fitness test.Trent did everything possible to get himself ready for this Test and is extremely disappointed to be missing out, Larsen said. While he has made good progress, after training yesterday we spoke with medical staff and it was agreed that Trent required a little further time to be ready for the demands of Test cricket. With first-choice backup Lockie Ferguson also injured, the Black Caps called up uncapped Central Districts all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn as cover.Larsen said Kuggeleijn, 25, had consistently finished among the top wicket takers in domestic cricket in recent seasons.Kuggeleijn was unavailable for national selection until recently while he stood trial for rape over an incident dating back to May 2015.However, a jury found him not guilty last month, deliberating for less than an hour before clearing him.Kuggeleijn is unlikely to start the Test, with New Zealand set to opt for Neil Wagner and Matt Henry in the absence of Boult and Southee. Not having Trent or Tim available tests the depth of our squad, but were confident of the job that Neil and Matt can do for us, he said.New Zealand trail 1-0 in the three Test series and need a win in the final match starting in Hamilton on Saturday to draw level with the Proteas.

Most mutations in cancer are random DNA mistakes: study

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - What causes cancer? A new study published Thursday suggests that cells make random mistakes while dividing, accounting for most of the mutations in tumors, rather than family history or environmental factors. The report in the journal Science was authored by the same team that led a controversial study in January 2015 that said random DNA mutations, or in other words just bad luck, is often to blame for cancer. This time, they expanded their mathematical model based on DNA sequencing and epidemiologic data to 69 countries worldwide.Two-thirds of the mutations that occur in cancers are due to the mistakes that cells make when they divide, co-author Bert Vogelstein, co-director of the Ludwig Center at the Johns Hopkins University Kimmel Cancer Center, said at a news conference.Environment is a factor in 29 percent of the mutations in cancer, while heredity accounts for five percent, according to the study.Every time a perfectly normal cell divides it makes several mistakes -- mutations, Vogelstein said. Most of the time these mutations dont do any harm, he added. That is the usual situation and that is good luck in our paraphrase. But occasionally they occur in a cancer-driver gene. That is bad luck, he said. The goal of the study was to better understand these mutations so that better ways of detecting cancer early can be developed. The study also shines a spotlight on cancers that will occur no matter how perfect the environment, and may alleviate the guilt some patients face when they are diagnosed. These copying mistakes are a potent source of cancer mutations that historically have been scientifically undervalued, said co-author Cristian Tomasetti, assistant professor of biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. However, he still urged people to avoid known risk factors for cancer, such as smoking and too much sun exposure. We need to continue to encourage people to avoid environmental agents and lifestyles that increase their risk of developing cancer mutations, he said.Vogelstein concurred, stressing that the latest research is in perfect accord with epidemiological estimates that 42 percent of cancers can be prevented -- and everyone should adhere to those prevention guidelines.- Stoking debate -==================Their earlier study, based on US patients, stoked debate in the scientific community.Critics said people might read it and believe they need not care about their diets or protect themselves from the sun if cancer were so often inevitable and unpreventable.A study in Nature in December 2015, almost a year afterward, countered that most cases of cancer were in fact caused by environmental factors, whether from smoking or exposure to ultraviolet radiation -- and not by random mutations. But the debate is far from settled, and scientists have continued to point to flaws in the research on both sides. This paper certainly wont be the last word on these matters, said Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at The Open University. What I most like about it is that it provides some much-needed clarity, in making a clear distinction between the roles of environment, heredity and replication errors in producing the mutations that lead to cancer, said McConway, who was not involved in the study. For lay people, the takeaway message is that many cases of cancer can be prevented, even though many cancerous mutations cannot.Despite the role of the random replication component in producing mutations, you could still reduce the cancer risk hugely, for many types of cancer, by getting rid of the environmental and/or hereditary causes, he said.According to Lawrence Young, director of the Cancer Research Center at the University of Warwick in England, the study contributes to the controversial debate. However, any mathematical model that attempts to account for cancer risks must take in a variety of external factors. So while this study is useful in attempting to integrate epidemiological and genome sequencing data, the message is complex and does not diminish to need to focus on improved approaches to both primary and secondary cancer prevention, he said.

Laptop ban creates turbulence for airline profits

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A carry-on ban by Washington and London for laptops on flights from some airports will hit the profits of affected airlines, especially the lucrative business class segments of Gulf carriers, analysts said Thursday.Washington decided to ban electronic devices bigger than mobile phones on direct flights to the United States from 10 airports in seven Middle Eastern countries and Turkey. Britain followed with a similar ban from five countries from the Middle East, northern Africa and Turkey. Its unusual to a have a security measure that is geographically selective, said Bertrand Mouly-Aigrot, an associate at Archery Strategy Consulting, which specialises in the security and transportation sectors. One of the probable knock-on effects is that certain travellers will turn to other companies for their trips to the United States but if the threat is there, it could be shifted to connecting flights, he told AFP.In addition to the risk of losing passengers and suffering a nosedive in client satisfaction, the impacted airlines will also have to bear the costs of checking in and screening more luggage, said experts.Banning laptops and other electronic devices in cabins should in theory reduce the risk of their being used to hide a bomb, as scanners for checked luggage are usually more sophisticated. The US ban affects around 50 flights per day from nine airlines: Royal Jordanian, EgyptAir, Turkish Airlines, Saudia, Kuwait Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways. The British ban affects 14 airlines: British Airways, EasyJet, Jet2.com, Monarch, Thomas Cook, Thomson, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airways, Atlas-Global Airlines, Middle East Airlines, Egyptair, Royal Jordanian, Tunis Air and Saudia.Wi-Fi yes, laptops noFlights to the United States from Gulf countries carry many business people who often travel with just carry-ons, and use their time onboard to get work done. And filling business class is what makes long-haul flights profitable, said Mouly-Aigrot.The additional time spent waiting to receive checked baggage upon arrival and the frustration of not being able to get work done during the flight in a Wi-Fi enabled cabin risks angering airlines most valued customers.Flying with a laptop onboard is considered the norm today. There is a risk of a considerable loss of passengers, said Didier Brechemier, a transport expert at the Roland-Berger consultancy.Ben Vogel at IHS Janes Airport Review said that airlines would also likely face increased claims for laptops and other electronic devices getting damaged in checked luggage, while the extra time passengers need to pass in enhanced security means they have less time to spend shopping in airports.Security variesVogel said it is true to say that security varies at airports in the countries affected by the plan.He pointed to Abu Dhabis modern airport that not only has advanced equipment for detecting explosives but where US authorities have set up immigration and customs checks for travellers even before they board their flights. At the other end of the spectrum, Egyptian airports have come under added scrutiny after the October 2015 crash of a Russian charter flight from Sharm el-Sheikh that killed all 224 on board. The Islamic State claimed it smuggled a bomb on board in a soda can.The measure is causing confusion and I can see a lot of airlines getting angry if this policy is not made clearer, said Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StrategicAero Research. He called the policy a little ill-conceived as it leaves open the possibility of using connecting flights to bring electronic devices into the cabins of US-bound flights. How would Homeland Security mitigate against a passenger from France with a device, etcetera, in the cabin... asked Ahmad, noting that France has suffered a lot of terrorism in recent years.Brechemier at Roland-Berger said if equipment is not able to detect bombs in electronic devices then it signifies that there is a global risk, not just in certain airports. Its clear that were in the midst of political jousting on rights to traffic, issues connected with oil, political issues that go well beyond the problem of devices in air travel, he said.US airlines have for years sought restrictions on the rights of Gulf carriers to fly to the United States, claiming that they have received unfair subsidies from their governments.
