Iraqi forces take third of west Mosul, jihadists 'trapped'

Posted:

MOSUL (AFP) - Iraqi forces recaptured a third of west Mosul and trapped Islamic State group fighters inside as they made further gains in their battle to retake the city, officials said Sunday.Fierce fighting has shaken Mosul in recent days as thousands of US-backed Iraqi soldiers and police battle to reclaim the countrys second city.A renewed push against the jihadists launched on March 5 has seen IS forced from several neighbourhoods and key sites, including the main local government headquarters and the famed Mosul museum.By Sunday, Iraqi forces were tightening the noose.IS is trapped. Just last night, the 9th Iraqi army division... cut off the last road out of Mosul, said Brett McGurk, the US envoy to the anti-IS coalition.Any of the fighters who are left in Mosul, theyre going to die there, he said. We are very committed to not just defeating them in Mosul, but making sure these guys cannot escape.Staff Major General Maan al-Saadi of the elite Counter-Terrorism Service said more than a third of west Mosul was now under the control of security forces.Saadi said CTS forces were battling IS inside Mosul al-Jadida and Al-Aghawat on Sunday, and Iraqs Joint Operations Command said they recaptured the latter area later in the day.The JOC also said forces from the Rapid Response Division, another special forces unit, and the federal police were also attacking the Bab al-Toub area on the edge of Mosuls Old City. The battle is not easy... we are fighting an irregular enemy who hides among the citizens and uses tactics of booby-trapping, explosions and suicide bombers, and the operation is taking place with precision to preserve the lives of the citizens, said JOC spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool.IS resistance has begun to weaken in a big way, he added.IS seized Mosul in mid-2014 and swept across areas north and west of Baghdad, taking control of swathes of territory and declaring a caliphate straddling the border with Syria.Backed by a US-led air strikes and other support, Iraqi forces have since retaken 60 percent of the territory they lost, said McGurk. The operation to recapture Mosul -- then the last Iraqi city under IS control -- was launched in October. After recapturing the east of the city, Iraqi forces last month set their sites on the west, where hundreds of thousands of civilians remain trapped. The US-led coalition launched air strikes against IS in Syria and Iraq in 2014 and is providing a range of support to allied forces in both countries.McGurk said IS fighters were thought to be dying faster than the group can replace them, and also said the coalition had trained nearly 90,000 Iraqi security personnel. In Syria the coalition is backing an Arab-Kurdish alliance known as the Syrian Democratic Forces that is pushing towards the jihadists de facto capital Raqa.Raqa remains their (ISs) administrative capital, its where we think a lot of their leaders are located, its where we think they are planning a lot of attacks around the world, said McGurk. On Sunday the SDF fought fierce battles with IS jihadists east of Raqa around Khas Ajil village, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.SDF forces took control of five villages as they continued a slow advance, said the Observatory.Eight civilians were among 19 people killed in suspected US-led air strikes four kilometres (2.5 miles) south of Raqa, said the monitor.Turkish-backed rebels are also advancing against IS in northern Syria, as are government troops supported by Russia. The Observatory also reported fighting in eastern Aleppo province where the jihadists forced regime troops to fall back from the outskirts of the Jarrah military airport.Russian and Syrian strikes hit IS-held areas in the province, Observatory said, with eight civilians, mostly from the same family, killed in a strike on the village of Maskanah.Syrias former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front said meanwhile it was behind twin bombings targeting Shiite pilgrims in the centre of Damascus that killed 74 people. On Saturday... a twin attack was carried out by two heroes of Islam... in the centre of the capital Damascus, killing and wounding dozens, a statement said. The Observatory said 43 Iraqi pilgrims were among those killed when a roadside bomb detonated as a bus carrying pilgrims made its way through the Ban al-Saghir area of Damascuss famed Old City and a suicide bomber blew himself up.The attack also killed 11 Syrian civilians and 20 members of pro-government security forces, it said.Shiite shrines have been a frequent target of attack for Sunni extremists of IS and Al-Qaeda during Syrias devastating six-year war.

Turkey warns 'fascist' Netherlands will pay in rally row

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday warned the Netherlands would pay for blocking his ministers from holding rallies to win support in a referendum on expanding his powers, as a crisis escalated with Turkeys key EU partners.Erdogan also repeated hugely controversial accusations that the Netherlands -- occupied by Nazi Germany in World War II -- was behaving like fascists in its treatment of Turkish ministers.Analysts are predicting a tight outcome to the April 16 referendum on a new constitution and Turkish ministers have planned major rallies in key EU cities to win votes from millions of Turks residing abroad. But Turkeys Family Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya was expelled after being prevented from addressing a rally in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam. Also this weekend, The Hague refused to allow Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglus plane to land ahead of a planned rally.Hey Holland If you are sacrificing Turkish-Dutch relations for the sake of the elections on Wednesday, you will pay a price, an angry Erdogan told a ceremony in Istanbul, referring to the March 15 election in Turkeys NATO ally. They will learn what diplomacy is, he growled, adding that what happened cannot remain unanswered. If you let horses, dogs on my citizens you have to be held to account, he said, referring to dogs, horses and water cannons used by Dutch police to disperse pro-Erdogan demonstrators after clashes in Rotterdam early Sunday. But Dutch Prime Prime Minister Mark Rutte ruled out apologising, saying: Theres absolutely no way excuses can be made, they should make excuses for what theyve done yesterday.Erdogan repeated his accusations that the Dutch response to the Turkish visits was Nazism, fascism.Speaking at a rally in the French city of Metz -- which was allowed to go ahead -- Cavusoglu described the Netherlands as the capital of fascism.Faced with an upsurge in support for the far-right, European governments have come under pressure to take a hard line on Erdogan, who is accused by critics of seeking one-man rule in the constitutional changes.Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke on Sunday called on his Turkish counterpart Binali Yildirim to delay a planned March visit because of the tensions.Police clashed with pro-Erdogan demonstrators in the Netherlands overnight while in Istanbul on Sunday a man climbed onto the roof of the Dutch consulate and replaced the Dutch flag with a Turkish flag.A Dutch foreign ministry spokeswoman told AFP that the Netherlands had protested to the Turkish authorities over the incident. The latest row came after NATO allies Turkey and Germany sparred over the cancellation of a series of referendum campaign events there.German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Sunday he was against Turkish ministers holding political rallies in Germany.A Turkish campaign has no business being here in Germany, he told public broadcaster ARD.Separately, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said he hoped Turkey would return to its senses.Berlin has also emerged as a strident critic over Ankaras crackdown following an attempted coup, which has seen more than 100,000 people arrested or dismissed from their posts over alleged links to the plotters or to Kurdish militants. The West has clearly shown its true face in the last couple of days, Erdogan said. What we have seen is a clear manifestation of Islamophobia, he added. The president indicated that he himself plans to travel to Europe for rallies, a move that could potentially create an even greater row.In Metz, Cavusoglu was welcomed by some 800 flag-waving Turks. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said in a statement there was no reason to prohibit this gathering.I thank France. France was not deceived by such games, Erdogan said.In a later speech outside Istanbul, Erdogan called on all international organisations to impose sanctions on the Netherlands, who he said was behaving like a banana republic. The diplomatic row triggered clashes in Rotterdam, where after several hours of calm demonstrations, police moved in to disperse over 1,000 people gathered near the Turkish consulate, charging the crowd on horseback and using dogs to regain control. The Netherlands is home to some 400,000 people of Turkish origin while Germany has 1.4 million people eligible to vote in Turkey -- the fourth-largest electoral base after the cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. In Wednesdays polls Rutte faces a strong challenge from the party of far-right anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders.

Top Republican challenges Trump to prove wiretapping claim

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A senior Republican lawmaker on Sunday challenged President Donald Trump to prove his claim that his phone was tapped by predecessor Barack Obama during last years campaign -- or else retract the unsubstantiated allegation.Senator John McCain, a frequent Trump critic, issued his demand in an interview with CNN.The president has one of two choices, either retract, or to provide the information that the American people deserve, McCain said.I have no reason to believe this is true, but I also believe that the president of the United States could clear this up in a minute, he continued. All he has to do is pick up the phone, call the director of the CIA, the director of national intelligence and say, OK, what happened? Because they certainly should know whether the former president of the United States was wiretapping Trump Tower.Obama, through a spokesman, has denied Trumps claim, which the billionaire-turned-politician made in a series of tweets earlier this month.Obamas director of national intelligence James Clapper also said in an interview that there was no wiretap of Trump or his campaign. But Trump has not walked back his allegation, and the White House asked a congressional committee that is examining Russian interference in last years US presidential election to investigate the wiretapping claim as well.House Speaker Paul Ryan, part of a group of eight top lawmakers who receive classified intelligence briefings, was asked Sunday during an interview with CBS News if he has seen anything to suggest theres truth to Trumps claim. He responded simply: No.But Ryan added, I dont want to get ahead of the intelligence committees and their thorough investigation.

Bus in Haiti flees accident, kills 38: officials

GONAIVES (AFP) - A bus speeding away from a hit-and-run accident plowed into dozens of street musicians in northern Haiti on Sunday, killing 38 people, officials said.Another 13 people were injured in the crash in Gonaives, a city of some 300,000 people located about 150 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of the capital Port-au-Prince.First, the bus plowed into two pedestrians, killing one of them, and injuring the other, Marie-Alta Jean Baptiste, head of Haitis civil protection office, told AFP.The driver of the Blue Sky bus then rammed into three groups of street musicians as he tried to speed away, leaving a scene of ghastly carnage. The number of injured was initially 17, but four victims later died at the hospital, the national police in Gonaives said.Police were forced to control an angry crowd after the grisly incident. Drivers in Haiti who are involved in accidents rarely stop at the scene because they fear attack by local mobs seeking to extract vigilante justice. The people who were not victims of the accident tried to burn the bus with the passengers inside, said Faustin Joseph, civic protection coordinator for the department of Artibonite, where Gonaives, the regional capital, is located. The Blue Sky bus line, a private company offering long-distance routes, is an upscale option for travel in Haiti with modern, air-conditioned coaches. Most Haitians generally travel on former American school buses which ply the roads, making frequent stops.Authorities initially said they had detained the bus driver, but he had actually fled the scene, Gonaives traffic chief Jeudy Lisate told AFP. Police were still trying to identify him.Its not known what caused the crash, which occurred on a straight stretch of a national road without any potholes. On Sunday afternoon a heavily damaged car was seen in a ditch on the side of the road, but the accident scene had otherwise been cleaned up.In a statement Haitian President Jovenel Moise expressed his deep sadness following the terrible accident. The head of state conveys, on behalf of the whole government, his sincere condolences to the families and those close to the victims, the statement read.Moise called for an investigation as soon as possible to shed light on this tragedy.

Football: Barca suffer PSG hangover in Deportivo defeat

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona boss Luis Enrique accepted his side had struggled to shrug off the euphoria of a remarkable Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain as the Spanish champions slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat at Deportivo la Coruna on Sunday.Enrique made five changes from the side that beat PSG 6-1 on Wednesday to produce the biggest comeback in Champions League history from a 4-0 first leg deficit.Obviously it was difficult. Only those that have experienced what we have this week knows what it means, but as professionals we know nothing is gifted to you, Said Enrique.Joselu had fired Deportivo into a first-half lead before Luis Suarez levelled in the first minute of the second period. However, Alex Bergantinos rose highest from a corner to seal Deportivos first victory over Barcelona since 2008.Barca still lead Real Madrid by one point at the top of La Liga, but the European champions now have two games in hand and can go top with victory over Real Betis later on Sunday. We knew it wasnt an easy game, added Enrique. Now we have to think that we still have matches against our rivals for the title to come.We are going to have to have a very strong end to the season to be able to opt for trophies.Two-goal hero in midweek Neymar was one of those to miss out due to an abductor injury.Barca still had plenty of firepower available, though, with Suarez alongside Lionel Messi up front and Suarez had the first big chance when he headed straight at German Lux.It took Deportivo 40 minutes to force Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a serious save as the German leapt to his left to brilliantly turn Joselus volley behind. However, from the resulting corner Ter Stegen was found wanting as he spilled Javier Mascheranos miscued clearance and Joselu was on hand to smash into an unguarded net.Barca got off to a flyer in the second-half as Suarez lashed home a loose ball inside the area to equalise just a minute after the restart.Enrique turned to Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic for a winner in the final half hour as Arda Turan and Andre Gomes were sacrificed. But Barca found it difficult to create clear-cut chances against the mass ranks of Deportivo defence, whilst the hosts were always a threat on the break.Joselu fired a sweetly hit volley straight down Ter Stegens throat.Alejandro Arribas then saw his header come back off the post, but once again having survived the initial threat, Barcelona conceded from the resulting corner. This time Bergantinos got above Jordi Alba to head into the bottom corner at the far post.Lux made a great save to deny Suarez a second equaliser, but Deportivo held out to give their hopes of survival a huge boost as they move eight points clear of the bottom three and up to 15th.And Pepe Mels men should even have capped their victory with a third goal as Ter Stegen denied Faycal Fajr deep into stoppage time before Jordi Alba cleared the Moroccans follow-up effort off the line.

Football: Ramos strikes again as Madrid prosper from Barca hangover

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos struck another late winner as the European champions usurped Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Real Betis on Sunday.Earlier, Barca boss Luis Enrique accepted his side had struggled to shrug off the euphoria of a remarkable Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain as the Spanish champions slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat at Deportivo la Coruna.Victory for Madrid moves Real two points clear of Barcelona and with a game in hand still to come. However, Madrids win was mired in controversy as goalkeeper Keylor Navas was extremely lucky to avoid an early red card before making a brilliant stoppage time save to deny Antonio Sanabria.Navas clearly cleaned out Darko Brasanac on the edge of the Madrid area as he raced from his goal after just 20 minutes, but referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz inexplicably waived play on.The hosts didnt benefit from Navass presence just four minutes later, though, as he bundled Sarabias shot into his own goal having appeared to have the effort under control.Cristiano Ronaldo ensured Madrid went in level at the break as he rose unmarked to power home Marcelos cross from close range for his 26th goal of the season.Betis had chances to reestablish their lead early in the second-half with Ruben Castros wild effort that flew over the best of them. However, the visitors chances of escaping with a point were dealt a huge blow when Cristiano Piccini saw a second yellow card 12 minutes from time. And just three minutes later, fresh from scoring two vital away goals at Napoli to ease Madrid into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, Ramos powered home another Toni Kroos header for the winner.Betis could still have salvaged a point, but Navas made amends for his early mistakes with a brilliant stop from Sanabrias powerful header. At Riazor, a much-changed Barcelona side from the one that hammered PSG 6-1 suffered a body blow to their hopes a third successful title with a first league defeat since October.Joselu had fired Deportivo into a first-half lead before Luis Suarez levelled in the first minute of the second period. However, Alex Bergantinos rose highest from a corner to seal Deportivos first victory over Barcelona since 2008.Obviously it was difficult. Only those that have experienced what we have this week knows what it means, but as professionals we know nothing is gifted to you, said Enrique.Two-goal hero in midweek Neymar was one of five changes to the Barca side due to an abductor injury. It took Deportivo 40 minutes to force Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a serious save as the German leapt to his left to brilliantly turn Joselus volley behind. But Barca found it difficult to create clear-cut chances against the mass ranks of Deportivo defence, whilst the hosts were always a threat on the break.Alejandro Arribas saw his header come back off the post, but once again having survived the initial threat, Barcelona conceded from the resulting corner. This time Bergantinos got above Jordi Alba to head into the bottom corner at the far post.Lux made a great save to deny Suarez a second equaliser, but Deportivo held out to give their hopes of survival a huge boost as they move eight points clear of the bottom three and up to 15th.

Football: Can the man as Liverpool beat Burnley

Posted:

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Emre Cans superb shot guided Liverpool to a 2-1 home win over Burnley on Sunday and maintained their bid to qualify for next seasons Champions League.Ashley Barnes, with his clubs first goal at Anfield since 1975, had given Burnley a deserved early lead only for Georginio Wijnaldum to equalise in first-half injury-time.And Can struck just after the hour mark to secure victory for Liverpool, although it was a far from convincing performance by Jurgen Klopps side.German international Can collected a short pass from Divock Origi and was allowed space to unleash a right-foot shot from 25 yards which the Burnley goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, might have been expected to save before it reached the bottom left-hand corner of his net.Liverpool had gone in at the half-time interval level although it was a scoreline that even the most ardent home supporter would have admitted was harsh on Burnley. With just two away points to their name all season -- from a still impressive tally of 31 -- Sean Dyches team opened the game aggressively and took the lead in just the seventh minute.Right-back Matt Lowton crossed low into the area from the wing and, after Andre Gray narrowly missed making contact, Barnes slid in ahead of his marker to force the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.Burnley, without a victory at Anfield since 1974, would have hoped to reach the interval without conceding an equaliser and looked well on course for that target for the majority of the half. Not until the 45th minute did Liverpool enjoy a shot on target and that was actually an over-hit defensive header from Burnleys Joey Barton which forced Heaton into a comfortable diving save, his first of the game. But a minute into first-half injury-time, Liverpool claimed an unlikely equaliser which raised the mood around the stadium.Origi, starting in place of the injured Roberto Firmino, crossed from the left and Wijnaldum made a lazy attempt to control the ball, flicking out a boot and benefitting from a fortunate rebound from defender Ben Mee, before drilling home an unstoppable finish from six yards.Considering recent dominant home wins over Tottenham and Arsenal, it was a disappointing start from a Liverpool side which has struggled against the Premier Leagues lower-placed clubs this term.Unbeaten against the top six all season, Liverpools five league defeats this term have come against teams currently in the bottom half of the table -- including 12th-placed Burnley, who won 2-0 when the sides met at Turf Moor in August. The first half offered little evidence those troubles were about to change.Even before the goal, Burnleys crosses from the right had caused concern, with Grays chip almost finding Barnes after five minutes.Solid at the back, Burnley also looked the more likely to score a second goal after Barness opener. After 25 minutes, Barnes yet again slipped his marker, Ragnar Klavan, but was offside as he volleyed wide and Gray shot just over from a difficult angle after a Lowton throw-in had flicked off James Milners head. But the second half opened with Liverpool in far more determined mood, although their suspect defending always gave Burnley hope.Barnes sent a speculative first-time shot wide soon after the restart before Liverpool finally started to threaten, with Joel Matip seeing a shot blocked from a Philippe Coutinho cross.Cans goal was still harsh on Burnley, although the visitors almost found a route back into the game just three minutes later, when Mee headed a free-kick across goal and Barness effort was blocked by Klavan. Both teams squandered late chances for further goals. Sadio Mane had only Heaton to beat but saw the Burnley keeper tip his 12-yard shot over the bar in the closing stages before Lowton missed a glorious opportunity to equalise, shooting wide from a scramble in the area in stoppage-time.

Football: Son shines but Kane injury mars Spurs stroll

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Son Heung-Mins hat-trick fired Tottenham into the FA Cup semi-finals, but his sides 6-0 victory against Millwall was overshadowed by Harry Kanes potentially serious ankle injury.Kane limped off in the 10th minute at White Hart Lane after his ankle twisted awkwardly. The England striker was sidelined with another ankle problem earlier this season and the injury is a major worry for Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.England manager Gareth Southgate will also be concerned as he is due to name his squad for forthcoming fixtures against Germany and Lithuania.Tottenham are looking to win the FA Cup for the first time since 1991 and close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea, but those ambitions would be much harder to achieve without their leading scorer.Despite Kanes absence, Tottenham were too strong for third tier Millwall and they marked the last FA Cup tie at the Lane before the stadium is demolished, with a commanding quarter-final display.Christian Eriksen opened the scoring and Dele Alli and Vincent Janssen were also on target, but it was Son who took centre-stage with his treble.Tottenham will discover their opponent for next months Wembley semi-finals on Monday, but news of Kane will be anticipated even more eagerly.Given the notorious reputation of Millwalls support, much of the pre-match focus had been on the possibility of crowd trouble. There was a tense atmosphere outside the stadium before kick off, but a huge police presence managed to contain the threat of serious violence despite bottle throwing and minor scuffles.Inside, a large segregated area was used to keep Millwall and Tottenham fans apart, with a line of stewards wearing orange hard hats in case missiles were thrown.Millwall arrived with a 17-match unbeaten run that included FA Cup upsets of Bournemouth, Watford and Leicester, but facing a team of Tottenhams class was a different proposition altogether.Dominating possession with ease, Pochettinos side battered Millwall from start to finish as they cruised to a 16th win from 18 home games this season.Kanes injury came early, the England stars ankle twisting badly after Jake Cooper slid into him. After several minutes of treatment, Kane limped off to be replaced by Danish winger Eriksen. It was a big blow for Tottenham given Kanes red hot form had brought him eight goals in his last four appearances and 24 for the season. As Tottenham regrouped, Millwall striker Steve Morison curled wide from 20 yards in a rare moment of alarm for the hosts. But Tottenhams incessant pressure was rewarded in the 31st minute when Alli chested down a high clearance and Eriksen pounced to drill a low shot into the far corner from just inside the area.Victor Wanyama powered a header against the crossbar as Tottenham pressed for the second goal, which arrived in spectacular fashion from Son in the 41st minute.Picked out by Eriksen on the edge of the area, Son cut inside and curled a sublime shot past King.Sons first goal since January was the perfect way to silence some unsavoury taunts aimed at him by Millwall fans, and the South Korean wasnt finished yet.Making a perfectly-timed run onto Kieran Trippiers pass, Son got in behind the Millwall defence in the 54th minute and volleyed a fine finish past King.Alli tapped in Eriksens cross for the fourth in the 72nd minute and Janssen made it five seven minutes later with his first goal from open play for Spurs since signing last year. There was still time for Son to be gifted his treble in stoppage-time when King let his shot slip through his legs into the net.

Tennis: Nadal powers ahead at Indian Wells

Posted:

INDIAN WELLS (AFP) - A solid effort saw three-time champion Rafael Nadal safely through to the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Guido Pella.Launching his campaign after a first-round bye, Nadal was happy to forego the fireworks on a blazing hot Stadium Court and secure a workmanlike win in one hour and 21 minutes. It was a solid match, Nadal said of a contest made trickier by facing another left-hander in heat that had the balls flying.I didnt try to do amazing things. I tried to play solid. I tried to find the rhythm, and I think I did. For moments I played well. For moments I played a little bit less well. Important thing, I won, and I won in straight sets.Pella seized the early initiative, breaking Nadal in the third game. But Nadal won six of the next seven games to pocket the set and go up a break to open the second.Pella recouped the break in the second game of the second set, but Nadal regained the advantage with a break for 5-2 and calmly served it out.He knows hell have to turn up the intensity if he wants to end a hard court title drought stretching back to 2014.Hes drawn in the so-called quarter of death that also features second-seeded Novak Djokovic, the three-time defending champion and five-time overall Indian Wells winner, along with four-time champion Roger Federer.Federer cemented his return from a 2016 disrupted by injury with a triumph over Nadal in the Australian Open final in January, the Swiss stars 18th Grand Slam title.Djokovic, rocked by a second-round exit at the Australian Open, was to launch his bid for a fourth straight Indian Wells title against Britains Kyle Edmund on Sunday, while Federer took on Frances Stephane Robert in the marquee match of the night session.Only one of the star trio can make it to the semi-finals, where fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori or sixth-seeded Marin Cilic could await.Japans Nishikori, a two-time finalist this year still looking for a first title of the season, eased past Britains Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-4.Nishikori had reason to know how dangerous the Briton could be. Evans shocked him four years ago in the first round of the US Open.I know he can play great tennis and when he was playing aggressively, he was very tough to play, Nishikori said. But I think I managed really well from the first point until the end. I think it was a good start. The jam-packed half of the draw is a contrast to the wide-open top half, which lost a lot of its lustre on Saturday when world number one Andy Murray was stunned by 129th-ranked Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil.Thats sport, no? Nadal said. Yesterday probably Andy didnt play his best match and Vasek served very well. So then you go to a tiebreak and anything can happen. While Murray arrived in Indian Wells off a victory in Dubai, Nadal noted that the venue has not been kind to the Briton in the past and he expected Murray to be back at full strength for the fast-approaching Miami Masters.Sometimes you dont feel comfortable in one event, and its difficult to overcome that, Nadal said, recalling his string of disappointments in Cincinnati before he managed a victory there. When you have bad feelings in one event, sometimes its difficult to overcome that.

Badminton: Lee wins fourth All England title, history for Taiwan

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) - Lee Chong Wei, Malaysias veteran world number one, captured the All-England Open on Sunday with a trampling 21-12, 21-10 win over Chinas unseeded Shi Yuqi.It was Lees fourth All-England title, which equals the achievement of Morten Frost, the Dane who is his coaching director in Kuala Lumpur. His tally is more than any singles player of the Open era except Lin Dan, the Chinese genius who is the only opponent consistently to get the better of him.The womens singles also produced a record, with Tai Tzu Ying, the top seed, becoming the first All-England champion in any discipline from Taiwan. But there was misery for China who suffered their worst tournament for two decades. At 34, Lee is the oldest singles champion of the Open era.Lee disclosed afterwards that he almost didnt make it to Birmingham, unsure whether his damaged left knee heavily strapped would tolerate competitive stresses. When I decided to come -- which was a very close decision -- I never at all thought that I would win the title, said Lee.Yes, I am very surprised. I came because it might be my last, and I just wanted to come and enjoy it.After two matches he was already feeling more confident about the injury, although he claims it was never a hundred percent. His 21-year-old opponent had found a path past Lin Dan, who appeared like an avuncular compatriot during their semi-final rather than the most fearsome player of his era.It presented Shi with his first major final, whereas Lee has had seven at the All-England alone, and many others, and the vast difference in experience showed cruelly. When the newcomer tried to keep the shuttle away from the net, where Lee had scored so heavily in his earlier matches, he found the veteran as brilliantly light-footed as ever, punching clears and, for the first time this week, launching punishing aerial attacks. From 8-7 in the first game it was mostly one-way traffic, with Shi trying different ways to redirect the flow, but finding that Lee was now able to unleash a complete and unstoppable all court game.I relaxed my mind, Lee said, admitting it was a by-product of no longer expecting to win. That is a mental skill he will try to re-create at Glasgow in August for the world championships, a title which has narrowly eluded him.Tai Tzu Ying, the womens top seed, becoming the first All-England champion in any discipline from Taiwan. She was unpredictable but dangerous, with a smash clocked at 223 mph, and overcame Ratchanok Intanon, the gifted former world champion from Thailand, despite trailing by five points in the second game. The match also had a twist in the tail. Ratchanok seemed about to level the match at 20-18 in the second game when her sliced smash was called in. But a video replay appeal summoned an image showing the shuttle one inch out and, buoyed by the adrenalin of this escape, Tai snatched three more points and the match, winning 21-16, 22-20.China captured only one title, the mixed doubles, through Lu Kai and Juang Yaqiong, which equalled the lowest total in two decades for the sports most successful country. It left head coach Li Yongbo, who earlier claimed that the fallow period doesnt mean we are going to fall behind, still seeking evidence to support his assertion.

Du Plessis surprise at ICC over India spat

DUNEDIN (AFP) - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said Sunday he was surprised no one had been charged by the ICC after the ugly spat which blighted the Australia-India Test series.I was, yes. Purely from the reason of what I went through in Australia for something I feel was a lot smaller, so (am) surprised with it, he said in Dunedin following the washed-out end to the first Test against New Zealand.Du Plessis was fined his match fee during a Test against Australia in November for sucking on a mint and rubbing saliva into the ball.ICC (International Cricket Council) chief executive David Richardson had described it as an obvious breach of the ball-tampering law. However, the ICC decided not to take action against the warring India and Australia captains -- Virat Kohli and Steve Smith -- following cheating accusations during the second Test in Bangalore last week.Kohli accused Smith of abusing the decision review system (DRS) after he was seen looking to the Australian dressing room for advice on whether to ask for a review after being given out lbw. Smith described his breach as a brain-fade.Du Plessis has always denied ball tampering and said the reaction from the ICC was different to the way he was treated.Definitely it was different. Im surprised by the way it happened, he said.Maybe its because I speak on a personal point of view and felt I was treated very harsh. When you see something like that youd hope it (the treatment) would be exactly the same.Du Plessis said it was very unlikely there would be a similar dust-up between the South African and New Zealand players. When you play teams like India and Australia obviously that can happen and its easy for something like that to blow up, he said. For me, its just been good to be on the other side of it this time and see how things unfold. The first Test between New Zealand and South Africa ended in a draw when rain prevented any chance of play on the final day with South Africa 224 for six in their second innings, leading New Zealand by 191.The second Test starts in Wellington on Thursday.
