Saturn moon has necessary conditions to harbor life: NASA

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - An ice-encrusted moon orbiting Saturn appears to have the conditions necessary for life, NASA announced Thursday, unveiling new findings made by its unmanned Cassini spacecraft.Cassini has detected hydrogen molecules in vapor plumes emanating from cracks in the surface of Enceladus, a small ocean moon coated in a thick layer of ice, the US space agency said. The plumes have led scientists to infer that hydrothermal chemical reactions between the moons rocky core and its ocean -- located under the ice -- are likely occurring on Enceladus. On Earth, those chemical reactions allow microbes to flourish in hot cracks in Earths ocean floors -- depths sunlight cannot reach -- meaning the moon could also nourish life. The plumes are 98 percent water, scientists said, with traces of molecules including ammonia, carbon dioxide and methane. Hydrogen had previously been elusive, they said, but its detection shows the moons life-supporting potential. Now, Enceladus is high on the list in the solar system for showing habitable conditions, said Hunter Waite, one of the studys leading researchers. The new research, which were published Thursday in the journal Science, indicates there is chemical potential to support microbial systems, he said.Cassini is on what NASA has described as its grand finale as it runs low on fuel, soaring through a 1,500-mile-wide (2,400-kilometer) gap between Saturn and its rings.Researchers called its latest discovery a capstone finding for the mission. Were pushing the frontiers. Were finding new environments, said James Green, NASAs Planetary Science Division Director. Were looking in a way that we never thought possible before for environments in our solar system which may harbor life today.

Middlesex oppose new English Twenty20 event

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Middlesex have become the first English county to voice their outright opposition to existing plans for a new domestic Twenty20 tournament. The eight-team event, which the England and Wales Cricket Board plan to launch in 2020 -- not a marketing trick but rather the year after their existing broadcast deals expire -- has already proved highly controversial.Thats because, if it becomes a reality, it will mean that for the first time there is a major domestic cricket tournament in England that does not feature all 18 first-class counties. For critics, thats the thin end of a wedge that leads to the destruction of the nationwide county system that has underpinned English cricket for more than a century. But supporters of the new event, having seen the success of the Indian Premier League and especially Australias Big Bash Twenty20 tournaments, believe the English game needs something similar if it is to recapture a lost generation of younger fans. The ECB needs 31 of its 41 constituent members, including the 18 first-class counties, to support a rule change that will allow it to proceed with an eight team, city-based, event.Several clubs have already given their approval, with the ECB promising counties will receive 1.3 million pound ($1.6 million, 1.5 million euros) annually for five years if the tournament comes into being. But if the new tournament gets the go-ahead, Middlesex could miss out on additional revenue as they do not own their Lords home ground in north London but are tenants instead of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).A statement on Middlesexs website confirmed the reigning first-class county champions opposition to the proposed ECB rule change, with the vote on whether to alter the existing regulations now in progress. While Middlesex is fully supportive of the creation of a new T20 tournament to drive the future of the game, we are unable to support this proposal at the current time, said club chairman Mike OFarrell.Middlesex has a unique position in playing at a ground that is likely to be a host venue at the tournament, yet not benefiting from the revenues associated with that status, he added. Therefore, the financial impact on Middlesex is still very uncertain and contains great risks to our current revenue streams.Additionally, the current governance of the ECB means that this article change creates a significant risk that counties that are not host venues for the new tournament may, in the future, be downgraded both in status and in revenue terms.Meanwhile Derbyshire gave their backing to the ECBs plans, with the Midlands countys chairman, Ian Morgan, saying Thursday: The majority of people who watch cricket today are of the older generation and we must get a younger audience through our doors. As weve seen with the Big Bash League in Australia and the Indian Premier League, a tournament of that nature can attract more families with young children to watch and go on to play cricket.

DUBAI (AFP) - Afghanistans big-hitting batsman Mohammad Shahzad has tested positive for the banned substance Clenbuterol and will be suspended, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said Thursday. The 29-year-old wicket-keeper, a key player in the teams charge towards potential Test match status, returned a positive test in an out-of-competition test conducted on January 17 at the ICC Academy in Dubai. The ICC today announced that Afghanistans wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation under the ICC Anti-Doping Code, said a statement from the governing body in Dubai. The sample analysed at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Salt Lake City, was found to contain the presence of Clenbuterol, a prohibited substance.Shahzad, who made his international debut in 2010, has played 58 matches in each of the ODI and Twenty20 formats. He has scored 1,901 runs in one-dayers with a best score of 131 not out while smashing 1,779 runs in T20 with a high of an undefeated 118.Shahzad is the fourth highest run-maker in T20 internationals, even passing Indian superstar Virat Kohli in the rankings when Afghanistan whitewashed Ireland 3-0 earlier this year. The ICC said that he will be banned from April 26 unless he exercises his right to challenge the imposition of the provisional suspension before such date. The matter will now be dealt with in accordance with the process set down in the code, and until such time as the process is resolved, the ICC will make no further comment on this matter, added the statement.

Toddlers playing with touchscreens sleep less: study

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - The more toddlers play with touchscreen devices the less they sleep, according to a study released Thursday that suggests the findings could be cause for concern. For every additional hour using a touchscreen phone or tablet during the day, children aged six months to three years slept nearly 16 minutes less in each 24 hour period, researchers reported in the journal Scientific Reports. But the study could not determine if the extra screen time was responsible for tiny tots sleeping less, or if the loss of shuteye had any adverse health effects. One expert not involved in the research said the results should be interpreted with extreme caution.Sleep is critical for cognitive development, especially during the first few years of life, when the brain and sleep patterns evolve in tandem.Earlier research has shown that television watching and video game use are linked to sleep problems in children. But the burgeoning use of touchscreens by an even younger cohort remained unexplored. In 2014, more than 70 percent of families in Britain, where the study was conducted, owned a touchscreen device. For the study, parents of 715 infants and toddlers were asked to report their childs daytime and night-time sleep, how quickly their children fell into slumber, and how often they woke during the night. The time children spent on touchscreen devices was also tracked.Three-quarters of toddlers monitored used a touchscreen tablet or phone on a daily basis. For children aged two or three, that percentage climbed to 92. On average, the devices were used 25 minutes per day.Not only did more screen time correlate with less sleep, it was also associated with a longer transition into slumber. The quality of sleep, however, did not appear to change.Several experts commenting on the findings challenged the studys methodology and conclusions. There could be many possible explanations for the link between screen time and less sleep, said Kevin McConway, an emeritus professor of statistics at The Open University in Britain. It could be the other way round -- maybe the parents of toddlers who already sleep less are more likely to let their children use touchscreens, he said.It was also pointed out that the average amount of lost sleep every day -- about six minutes -- may not be significant at an age when children sleep on average 12 hours out of very 24.Others underlined the importance of following up.This is a timely piece of research given the already controversial topic of screen use in childhood and adolescence, said Anna Joyce, an expert in cognitive development psychology at Coventry University in England.Other research has shown that scrolling touchscreens helps develop find motor skills in very young children.
