Football: Morata helps Madrid keep Messi-inspired Barca in check

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Alvaro Morata scored twice as Real Madrid maintained a two-point lead over Barcelona at the top of La Liga by making light of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bales absence in a 4-2 win at Leganes.Earlier, on Wednesday, Lionel Messis double on his return from suspension and Luis Suarezs stunning overhead kick helped Barcelona sweep aside Sevilla 3-0.Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane gambled on the strength of his squad ahead of a mammoth 18 days which sees the European champions welcome Atletico Madrid and Barcelona to the Santiago Bernabeu and also meet old foes Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.However, the Frenchman was rewarded as the likes of Marco Asensio, James Rodriguez and Morata took their chance to shine. As well as their slender lead, Real also have a game in hand over Barcelona.Asensios storming run set up the opener for Rodriguez on 15 minutes as he weaved past three Leganes defenders before squaring for the Colombian to tap home his sixth goal of the season.Moratas looping header and then calm finish into the top corner from Mateo Kovacics pass looked to have put Madrid out of sight inside 23 minutes.Yet, on Reals first ever La Liga visit to Butarque, the hosts had something to celebrate before half-time as Gabriel Pires and Luciano Neves took advantage of some slack Madrid defending to cut the deficit to 3-2 before half-time.The visitors quickly restored their two-goal cushion just three minutes into the second-half, though, when Leganes captain Martin Mantovani contrived to punch the ball into his own net.At the Camp Nou, Messi looked rested rather than rusty after being banned for his last two outings for club and country as he took his tally for the season to 43 goals in 41 games.Sevillas visit offered boss Jorge Sampaoli a final chance to make his case for the Barca job at the end of the season. But defeat continues Sevillas slump and a sixth straight game without a win sees them remain three points behind Atletico Madrid in the battle for third place.Messi fired an early warning as he blasted a shot off the underside of the bar from outside the area after just three minutes.Sevilla had two glorious chances to open the scoring as Steven NZonzi fired too close to Marc-Andre ter Stegen when clean through before Vitolo headed over when unmarked inside the area.Barca dont need many chances to score. We had two one-on-ones and we couldnt take them, said a frustrated Sampaoli.Suarez made no such mistake as he caught Messis deflected cross flush with an overhead kick to break the deadlock with his 31st goal of the season. The way the ball fell I had no other option. As a striker you have a notion of where the goal is and it managed to help the team win, Suarez told BeIN Sports.Barcas star front three were all involved for their second on the counter-attack as Suarez turned Neymars cross back into Messis path to slot low past Sergio Rico.Messi doubled his tally for the night six minutes later when he volleyed home a loose ball inside the Sevilla area. The first half we played at a top level, said Enrique. We arguably even deserved to have a bigger lead.Sevillas misery was complete when Spanish international Vitolo was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card after chopping down Neymar.

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi scored twice on his return from suspension as Barcelona piled the pressure on Real Madrid on Wednesday by moving top of La Liga with a 3-0 win over Sevilla.Messi was banned for his last two outings for club and country but looked rested rather than rusty as he took his tally for the season to 43 goals in 41 games. The Argentine also played his part in setting up Luis Suarezs stunning overhead kick to open the scoring. The way the ball fell I had no other option. As a striker you have a notion of where the goal is and it managed to help the team win, Suarez told BeIN Sports.Barca lead Real by a point, but Zinedine Zidanes men have two games in hand, starting at Leganes later Wednesday.Madrid will have to do without Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale after they were rested by Zidane.Defeat continues Sevillas slump and a sixth straight game without a win sees them remain three points behind Atletico Madrid in the battle for third place.A visit to the Camp Nou offered Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli a final chance to make his case for the Barca job at the end of the season.Sampaoli was one of the leading candidates when Luis Enrique announced his decision to step down at the end of the season last month. However, Sampaoli was left to rue another night of missed chances as a three-goal blitz in eight first-half minutes secured the three points for the hosts before half time.Barca dont need many chances to score. We had two one-on-ones and we couldnt take them, said a frustrated Sampaoli.Messi fired an early warning as he blasted a shot off the underside of the bar from outside the area after just three minutes.Sevilla had two glorious chances to open the scoring as Steven NZonzi fired too close to Marc-Andre ter Stegen when clean through before Vitolo headed over when unmarked inside the area.Suarez made no such mistake as he caught Messis deflected cross flush with an overhead kick to break the deadlock with his 31st goal of the season.Barcas star front three were all involved for their second on the counter-attack as Suarez turned Neymars cross back into Messis path to slot low past Sergio Rico.Messi doubled his tally for the night six minutes later when he volleyed home a loose ball inside the Sevilla area. The first half we played at a top level, said Enrique. We arguably even deserved to have a bigger lead.Messi then passed up a huge chance for his hat-trick just after the break when he didnt get enough lift on an attempted chip to beat Rico.Sevilla had a series of chances to at least claim a consolation as Pablo Sarabia twice tested Ter Stegen with fierce efforts.Barca could afford the luxury of replacing Suarez, Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitic in the final half hour to keep them fresh for a huge month with both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Juventus and a trip to Real Madrid to come in the next 18 days.Sevillas misery was complete when Spanish international Vitolo was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card after chopping down Neymar.

Football: Hazard tames Man City as Chelsea tighten grip

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Eden Hazard scored twice as leaders Chelsea beat Pep Guardiolas Manchester City 2-1 on Wednesday to reassert their control of the Premier League title race.Chelsea had given the chasing pack hope after crashing to a shock 2-1 loss at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, but they bounced back to preserve their seven-point lead over Tottenham Hotspur.Hazards early opener was cancelled out by Sergio Aguero, who punished an error by home goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but the Belgian winger scored the rebound from his own penalty to get Chelsea back to winning ways.Having won 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium in December, Chelsea became the first team to do a league double over a team managed by Guardiola, whose side had been unbeaten in eight league games. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach has now been beaten six times in a single league season for the first time in his glittering career. His side remain fourth, 14 points below Chelsea, and are now under increasing threat from Arsenal and Manchester United, both of whom trail them by four points with a game in hand.City skipper Vincent Kompany made his first start since January and Jesus Navas kept his place at right-back in a visiting back four that quickly found itself under examination by the roving Hazard.Having already created an early opening for Diego Costa, the Belgian broke the deadlock in the 10th minute.Cesar Azpilicueta, filling in for injured wing-back Victor Moses, cut the ball back from the byline and Hazards shot glanced off Kompanys scalp to leave Willy Caballero clutching thin air.Hazard was at it again midway through the first half, another cutback teeing up Cesc Fabregas for a shot that was deflected onto the top of the bar by Gael Clichy. But with David Silva in the Hazard role, City were showing signs of life at the other end and after Aguero, following a one-two with Silva, had been denied by Courtois, they levelled.Whereas Caballero had been partly at fault for Chelseas opener, Courtoiss culpability for Citys equaliser was clear. The Belgium goalkeepers tame lofted pass went straight to Silva and although he partially atoned by saving from the Spaniard, Aguero was on hand to force in the rebound.Courtois showed greater alertness moments later when he slid out to save at the feet of Leroy Sane and 10 minutes before half time Chelsea took the lead again.Fernandinho was penalised for clumsily tripping Pedro and while Caballero got down well to save Hazards penalty, the Chelsea number 10 made no mistake with the rebound.Chelsea manager Antonio Conte made his intentions plain at half time by sending on Nemanja Matic for Kurt Zouma, which saw Pedro move to wing-back as the hosts stiffened their midfield. The second half was a tale of City attacks and Chelsea counter-attacks.Kompany sent a looping header against the bar from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick, while Fernandinho shinned a volley over and John Stones headed straight at Courtois from Silvas corner.Pedro and Hazard were the animators of Chelseas counters, the former curling straight at Caballero, the latter blazing over from the ex-Barcelona forwards cut-back.Citys frustrations began to tell as the second half wore on with Clichy, Fabian Delph and Kompany all booked, while Guardiola looked a picture of annoyance on the touchline.City created one last opening, substitute Nolito arcing a glorious ball into the box from deep on the left, but Courtois saved bravely from Aguero.

Football: Spurs' thrilling fightback keeps title hopes alive

SWANSEA (AFP) - Son Heung-Min was Tottenhams hero as they kept their title hopes alive with three goals in the final minutes of a dramatic 3-1 win at Swansea on Wednesday. With just two minutes left, Mauricio Pochettinos team were in danger of falling 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who were on the verge of wrapping up a 2-1 victory against Manchester City.Spurs were trailing to an 11th minute goal from their former winger Wayne Routledge. However, the north Londoners refused to surrender and Dele Alli equalised before South Korean forward Son struck in stoppage-time.Christian Eriksen made it three to ensure Spurs still have a chance of overhauling Chelsea with eight games to play.Swansea slump back into the relegation zone and are now two points from safety.Spurs might have taken the lead inside the first 40 seconds when Son was teed up on the edge of the Swansea box, but Federico Fernandez blocked his shot and Alfie Mawson completed the clearance.Having been somewhat fortunate to survive an early onslaught from the visitors, Paul Clements side took an 11th minute lead.Jordan Ayew forced his way into the box and duly set up Routledge to tap in.Tottenham responded by dominating possession, but they couldnt find a way through in the first half. When Ben Davies crossed for Son to volley over, it was beginning to look like one of those nights when nothing went right for Spurs.Pochettinos side felt they should have had a penalty two minutes into the second half when Sons goal-bound shot struck Fernandez, but replays showed the ball had hit the Argentine on the shoulder.Swansea continued to drag all but Ayew behind the ball and while Tottenham kept their composure there were precious few opportunities to score. It was almost a different story altogether at the other end when Kyle Naughton cut back inside Davies before seeing his deflected shot fly wide of Michel Vorms far post. From the ensuing corner Leroy Fer was adjudged to have fouled the former Swansea goalkeeper in trying to head home from three yards.Pochettinos response was to introduce Vincent Janssen on the hour, with Alli moving further forward as wellWith the game edging towards full time, Tottenham kept pressing and Toby Alderweireld saw a shot fizz over the top of Lukasz Fabianskis goal before the Pole kept his side in front with a wonderful save from Allis 85th minute header. The breakthrough finally came with three minutes remaining.Eriksens shot was deflected to the far post, where Alli side-footed the ball past Fabianski, sparking wild celebrations on the Tottenham bench. There was even greater jubilation to come for Spurs in stoppage-time.With a win vital to their chances of catching Chelsea, the visitors poured forward and Son bagged the second after an exquisite flick from Janssen.Swansea were shattered and Eriksen wrapped up the epic finale when the Dane beat Fabianski from 20 yards after Allis wonderful assist.

Tennis: Desperate Djokovic seeks Davis Cup reboot

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Novak Djokovic spearheads Serbias bid to reach the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2013 and reboot a career which has stalled since his history-making French Open victory.Although Djokovic is still number two in the world the 29-year-old remains a shadow of the man whose maiden Roland Garros title in June last year allowed him to boast ownership of all four majors.Shock early losses at Wimbledon, the Rio Olympics and Australian Open have been compounded by a recent elbow injury which sidelined him from the Miami Masters.Since the start of 2017 Djokovic has won just seven matches but he insists that this weekends Davis Cup clash at home to Spain provides the perfect platform for the defence of his French Open title, the only Grand Slam still in his possession.I always draw very positive energy from these weeks, said Djokovic, who won the Davis Cup in 2010, as he sat alongside teammates in Belgrade where the quarter-final takes place.I have shared some amazing moments in my career, in my life, with the people that are sitting at this table.Playing for our country in the official team competition -- the only official team competition we have in (this) sport -- is definitely very special, added Djokovic, who is on an 11-match win streak in Davis Cup singles.Five-time champions Spain won the only previous meeting between the two countries 4-1 in 2009, with Rafael Nadal defeating Djokovic in the decisive rubber. But eight years on and Nadal has opted out of the trip to Belgrade, choosing to rest ahead of the imminent clay court season and his prime target -- a 10th French Open title.World number 19 Pablo Carreno-Busta will instead lead Spains assault on a first semi-final spot since 2012.The winners of the tie will take on either France or Great Britain for a spot in the final. The European rivals meet on an indoor clay court at Rouen with Britain hampered by the loss of world number one Andy Murray, out with an elbow injury.World number 44 Dan Evans is Britains top-ranked singles player despite not having played on clay for three years, while 17-ranked Lucas Pouille shoulders French hopes with leading men Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils not in contention.Nine-time winners France have gambled by handing the second singles spot to veteran Jeremy Chardy despite the world number 68 not having played in the tournament for six years.Chardy replaces Gilles Simon meaning it will be the first time since 2005 that Frances self-styled Three Musketeers of Tsonga, Monfils and Simon have not been named in a Davis Cup line-up.It wasnt an easy choice but I think it was the better solution, said France captain Yannick Noah.In Brisbane 28-time winners Australia host the United States, Davis Cup champions on a record 32 occasions. The two countries meet for the 47th time in tournament history with firebrand 16th-ranked Nick Kyrgios, fresh from his epic three-set loss to Roger Federer in the Miami semi-finals, taking the role of Australias top singles player. With teammate Jordan Thompson, 79 in the world, Kyrgios be relied on to take both singles rubbers. However, the US boast two top-25 players in Jack Sock and John Isner. The winners of that tie will meet either 2015 runners-up Belgium or Italy, who stunned defending champions Argentina in the first round, for a final spot.Italys chances of seeing off Belgium in Charleroi were hit on Wednesday when Fabio Fognini, who came from two sets down to win the decisive rubber in Argentina in February, was ruled out with injury.World number 122 Alessandro Giannessi replaces Fognini.

Tennis: Venus Williams crashes out in Charleston

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Venus Williams was sent crashing out of the WTA Charleston clay court event on Wednesday, losing a grueling three-set second round battle to Germanys Laura Siegemund. The veteran third seed bowed out in her opening match of the tournament, losing 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 7-5 to the 29-year-old world number 37.It was Siegemunds second three-setter of the tournament, and the German admitted she was as surprised as anyone following the win over the former world number one which saw her save two match points.I have no idea Siegemund told an interviewer on court when asked to explain her victory. It was a really good match; it was going up and down. I just tried to believe in my game, and if I was down, I told myself I was going to get more chances.Siegemund squandered a match point in the second set and was then broken as she served for the match in the same set as Williams forced a third set.Siegemund then recovered twice from breaks in the decider and saved two match points of her own as Williams served for the match at 5-4.Siegemund broke however to level it at 5-5 and then held and broke Williams to clinch victory.Williams admitted she had been unable to shake off Siegemund.I tried my best to think this could be the best match shell ever play in her life, honestly, Williams said. I basically won but still lost.I really played the best game I could. I pretty much hit winners, but she hit winners back on me, and I just didnt have any answers for that.I dont know much more that I could do. I mean, there were some errors I made in the beginning, but when push came to shove, I feel like I did the right things, but somehow inexplicably came up empty.Williams, 36, had arrived in Charleston fresh from strong performances at Indian Wells, where she reached the quarter-finals, and the Miami Open, where she advanced to the last four.

Golf: Johnson's Masters in doubt after hurting back in fall

Posted:

AUGUSTA (AFP) - World number one Dustin Johnson was in doubt for the Masters after injuring his lower back Wednesday in a serious fall on the eve of the years first mens major golf championship. The 32-year-old American star landed very hard after a fall down stairs at his rented house in Augusta, his agent said, but still hopes to be fit enough to tee off in Thursdays first round. Before the announcement sent shock waves through Augusta National Golf Club, Johnson was the oddsmakers favorite to collect the champions green jacket after winning his past three starts. At roughly 3 pm today, Dustin took a serious fall on a staircase in his Augusta rental home, his agent, David Winkle, said in a statement. He landed very hard on his lower back and is now resting, although quite uncomfortably. He has been advised to remain immobile and begin a regimen of anti-inflammatory medication and icing, with the hope of being able to play tomorrow.Johnson, who practiced briefly Wednesday before storms closed the course early, is scheduled to tee off in Thursdays final first-round group at 2:03 pm alongside compatriots Jimmy Walker and Bubba Watson.Golf Digest-Golf World reported on its website that Johnsons feet went out from under him when he was on a short staircase going into a basement and that his fiancee, Paulina Gretzky, said the fall sounded like a huge thud.Dude, I cant believe I did that, Johnson told his trainer, according to the report, which also said Johnson has pain in the lower left side of his back below the rib cage. He expects to visit the PGA Tour medical trailer Thursday morning, possibly having an X-ray or MRI exam.Even if he is able to start, his trademark long driving skills could be compromised if the back trouble continues, a potentially serious handicap over the 7,435-yard layout.Johnson averaged a tournament-best 299.5 yards in driving distance last year, when he finished a career-best fourth, and averaged a Masters-low 26.50 putts per round in 2015, when he shared sixth.Everything has got to be working this week, Johnson said Tuesday. If you want to win, youre going to have to drive it well. Youre going to have to hit your irons well. Youre going to have to putt it well.I dont know how many guys are in the field, but they are the best golfers in the world, so youve got to bring your best stuff if you want to win.The injury marks another setback in the checkered career of Johnson, who won his first major title last year at Oakmont.Johnson, hoping to make his seventh Masters start, withdrew from the 2012 edition after a back injury suffered, his agent said, when he lifted a jet-ski.At the 2010 PGA championship, Johnson carried a one-stroke lead into the final hole but received a two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a bunker, doing so in a sandy area he did not recognize as a hazard. At the 2010 US Open, he led by three entering the final round but fired an 82 and finished eighth. Johnson was level with Jordan Spieth on the 72nd hole of the 2015 US Open but missed a three-foot birdie putt to force a playoff, settling for second.Johnson -- born an hours drive north of Augusta National in Colombia, South Carolina -- became the world number one by winning at Riviera in February and followed with World Golf Championships Mexico and Match Play titles last month. He would be the first player since 1976 to enter the Masters on a three-event win streak. The last time a world number one missed a major tournament was in 2015 when Rory McIlroy suffered an ankle injury a few weeks before he was to have defended his title at the British Open.Johnson has not missed a major since the 2014 PGA Championship, which came just after he announced he was taking a six-month break from golf to seek professional help for personal challenges. No world number one has won the Masters title since Tiger Woods in 2002 and no player since 1940 has made the Masters his fourth victory in a row.

'Next generation' excites England's Cook

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former Test captain Alastair Cook is relishing playing alongside the next generation of England leaders as he bids to secure his place in the 2017/18 Ashes squad for Australia.Opening batsman Cook, Englands all-time leading Test run-scorer, resigned as skipper in February after a 4-0 series loss in India late last year following 17 series in charge.Joe Root succeeded Cook with dynamic all-rounder Ben Stokes his deputy. Its a very exciting time, Cook told Sky Sports on Wednesday. Its kind of the next generation of leaders, obviously with Ben as well, pushing that team forward.I hope I can score enough runs to justify my place at the top of the order. The 32-year-old Essex left-hander enjoyed arguably both his greatest personal cricket success and disappointment in Australia.During Englands victorious 2010/11 Ashes tour under Andrew Strauss he scored a mammoth 766 runs, including three hundreds, at an average of 127.66.But as captain Cook presided over Englands 5-0 series loss in 2013/14, where he managed just 246 runs at 24.60.As players youd love to get on that plane and be part of an Ashes squad, said Cook, who also led England to home Ashes series wins in 2013 and 2015.Ive had some pretty dark moments as a player (in Australia) but also a very special tour in 2010/11, which is repeatable. He added: Theres no doubt we can win that series.Australia at home will be favourites -- theyre a very hard side to beat at home -- but if you look through our team now theres a lot of strength there.Cook is convinced he quit the captaincy at the right time after the India whitewash.I was pretty clear, leaving that tour, that my race was run as captain, he said. I felt the team needed a change of voice, a change of direction. We lost too many games (in 2016) for the talent weve got in that side. When you start those questions nagging, as soon as your mind is not quite on it, it is time to be honest with yourself.Cook had hoped to play in Essexs County Championship opener against Lancashire starting on Friday. But earlier on Wednesday England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said he had been ruled out of the match with a hip injury. His absence is understood to be a precaution against aggravating an injury which is not thought to be serious at this stage. The match would have seen Cook and Lancashire paceman James Anderson, Englands leading Test run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively, in opposition.Cook will now have to wait until Essexs match against Somerset at Taunton next week to make his debut for the season.Cook has been receiving treatment for the problem for several weeks. A scan this week has ruled out serious injury, but he will undertake an injection in the upcoming days to help settle his symptoms, said an ECB statement. No longer involved in international limited-overs cricket, Test specialists such as Cook are not due to represent England again until the opening match of the South Africa series at Lords on July 6.

Ivanka Trump says she's free to disagree with dad

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Ivanka Trump has the US presidents ear like few others, but in her first interview since formally joining the White House she insisted she can also disagree with her father with total candor.Donald Trumps eldest daughter and her husband Jared Kushner have emerged as key figures in the presidents inner circle, enjoying his full trust and in Kushners case a fast-expanding portfolio despite their lack of prior policy experience. The first daughter already had a White House office and has been a highly visible presence at Trumps side, hosting foreign leaders and sitting in on policy meetings, but her role had yet to be formally defined. That changed last week when it was announced the 35-year-old businesswoman will become an unpaid federal employee, with the title of assistant to the president, in an apparent move to quell concerns about her level of security access and potential conflicts of interest.Speaking to CBS This Morning in her first major interview since the inauguration, Ivanka Trump -- who has often been portrayed as a moderating influence on her father -- gave some insight into how she sees her unprecedented new role.Im still my fathers daughter, she said. But Ill weigh in with my father on the issues I feel strongly about.Whenever she disagrees with the Republican leader, he knows it, she said. And I express myself with total candor. When pressed however she declined to provide examples of areas of divergence. This isnt about promoting my viewpoints, Ivanka Trump told CBS. I wasnt elected by the American people to be president.Where I agree, I fully lean in and support the agenda and hope to make a positive impact. But I respect the fact that he always listens, she added.Ivanka Trump also addressed the charge from critics that she has failed to speak out in areas -- from gay rights to abortion to climate change -- where she is believed to hold views more liberal than others in the Trump administration.I would say not to conflate lack of public denouncement with silence, she said.
