But I wasnt going to give him any chance, Lee told reporters after the game.Against the South Korean, Lees supremacy was never in doubt as the 34-year-old player raced to a 11-4 lead after just nine minutes. The Malaysian wrapped up the opening game 21-11 in dominant fashion, with even the occaisional trick shot.Lee, who has not dropped a game en route to the last eight, is confident of defending his title on home turf, having skipped the India Open to prepare. The Malaysia Open began Tuesday in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak state on Borneo island. In the second game, Lee continued to launch his powerful killer shots, despite concerns over his left knee, which is still taped up due to an injury suffered in February. The Malaysian star will face Hong Kongs Wong Wing Ki on Saturday.Wong has done well to upset some of the bigger names here, but I will be focused and just out to enjoy myself, Lee said.Wong breezed into the semifinals without having to lift his racquet after Olympic champion Chen Long of China quit the Malaysia Open after injuring his right wrist.Meanwhile, Chinas two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan was stretched to three games to defeat Jonatan Christie of Indonesia for a place in the semi-finals on Saturday.Lin Dan won the opening game 21-15, lost the second 14-21 before storming through 21-9 in just less than an hour.

TERMAS DE RIO HONDO (AFP) - Spains Maverick Vinales, who won the season-opener in Qatar, continued his blistering form on Friday by setting the fastest time in practice for Sundays Grand Prix of Argentina as his rivals struggled. The 22-year-old clocked a best time of 1min 39.377sec after two sessions on the hot and dusty Termas de Rio Hondo circuit with defending world champion Marc Marquez second fastest on a Honda, 0.301sec behind.Unheralded Czech rider Karel Abraham, on a Ducati, was third fastest at 0.403sec off the lead.Marquez, the 2013, 2014 and 2016 world champion, recovered well after managing a mediocre 11th best in the morning run. However, it was a miserable two sessions for nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi, the teammate of Vinales, who was down in 16th in both sessions and ended the day 1.054sec behind his Spanish Yamaha partner.Former champion Jorge Lorenzo, whose decision to join Ducati created the Yamaha vacancy for 22-year-old Vinales, fared even worse ending the day in 18th place, 1.122sec off the pace.Rossi was third in the Qatar Grand Prix two weeks ago but Lorenzo, the 2010, 2012 and 2015 world champion, was a disappointing 11th in a race where his Ducati factory teammate Andrea Dovizioso was runner-up.

Record-setting West Indies beat Pakistan in 1st ODI

Posted:

PROVIDENCE (AFP) - Jason Mohammed played the finest innings of his brief international career to pace the West Indies to an historic four-wicket victory over Pakistan in the opening one-day international at the National Stadium in Guyana on Friday.Set a daunting target after the visitors rattled up a formidable 308 for five batting first, Mohammeds blistering unbeaten 91 off just 58 deliveries, aided by an explosive cameo at the end from Ashley Nurse (34 off 15 balls), saw the home side successfully chasing a target of 300 or more in an ODI for the first time ever following 31 previous failed attempts over a 44-year period. With that weight of history against them, Pakistan looked to have put the West Indies out of the match on a relaid pitch that encouraged attacking strokeplay.Mohammed Hafeez led the tourists batting effort with a top score of 88 to temporarily quell the rising tide of criticism at his position in the batting line-up ahead of prolific youngster Babar Azam.Opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad benefited from an early slice of luck to get to 67 while Shoaib Malik, who also capitalised on continuing errant out-cricket by the West Indies, flailed away for 53 off 38 deliveries as Pakistan equalled their second-highest total against these opponents in the 50-over format of the game.Nurse enjoyed success amid the carnage, the off-spinning all-rounder finishing with his best ODI figures of four for 62.West Indies chase started badly with the early loss of Chadwick Walton to Mohammad Amir but left-handers Evin Lewis (47) and Kieran Powell (61) kept their team in with an outside chance even if their comparatively pedestrian progress meant the required run-rate was climbing all the time.Hafeez and Shadab Khan, making his ODI debut after an outstanding T20 series, provided what seemed the critical breakthroughs but Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed paid a heavy price for relying on his faster bowlers to complete victory.Recognising the threat posed by leg-spinner Khan, Mohammed targeted the pacers to great effect, most of his three sixes and 11 fours coming off them.I knew it was going to be difficult against Shadab, he said after receiving the man of the match award.I decided to go after the fast bowlers and and where to hit them. That clear thinking paid off today. In contrast, Nurse, who came to the crease after the fall of Jonathan Carter and captain Jason Holder at 259 for six in the 45th over, smashed all bowlers to great effect, his unbeaten 34 coming off just 15 balls with five fours and a huge six of Khan, which effectively ended the match as a contest.I was disappointed with the way we bowled at the end, said Ahmed, reflecting on the first time Pakistan have failed to defend a total in excess of 300 outside of the Indian sub-continent.Jason batted brilliantly but we need to come back stronger for the second match on Sunday. Both teams are battling for important rankings points to confirm automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup in England as one of the top eight teams by the cut-off date of September 30 this year.Pakistan are currently eighth with the West Indies in ninth spot.

He died of his injuries on Thursday, police said.We are trying to find whether the mob was instigated by the (girls) family, Chandan Kumar Jha, Gumla police chief told AFP.He said three people have been arrested and more were wanted over the killing, which is being treated as religiously motivated. The young couple had been together for about a year and had faced threats in the past, Jha said.Inter-religious relationships are still a taboo in India, particularly in rural areas. The issue has become a flashpoint for nationalists in recent years, with Hindu extremists raising fears of love jihad -- claims that Muslim boys were attempting to seduce and elope with Hindu girls across the country to convert them.Prime Minister Narendra Modis right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made claims of protection of Hindu women a part of their electoral strategy in a March vote in populous Uttar Pradesh state. The latest Hindu mob violence comes less than a week after a 55-year-old Muslim man was fatally attacked in western Rajasthan state over allegations that he was smuggling cows, as tensions rose over the slaughter of an animal Hindus consider sacred.

FIFA announces $369 million loss

Posted:

ZURICH (AFP) - FIFA on Friday announced a $369 million loss for 2016, a second straight annual deficit, as it recovers from bribery scandals and acknowledged it had spent a huge chunk of its reserves in the past year. The games world governing body blamed the cost of investigating the scandals, bad investments and accounting changes. But there is worse to come for the organisation, which is rebuilding after its near collapse at the end of the tainted Sepp Blatter era.It expects to lose $489 million, before tax, in 2017 before a World Cup revenue bonanza in 2018 rescues the accounts.FIFAs losses for 2015-2017 are set to hit $910 million (855 million euros) even though it revised its 2015 deficit down from $122 million to $52 million.Revenues fell to $502 million in 2016 from $544 million in 2015.FIFA said its reserves had fallen from $1.4 billion in 2015 to $1.04 billion in 2016 and they are expected to crash to $605 million this year.FIFA is banking on making $1.1 billion in profits in 2018 when the World Cup is held in Russia, which would give a surplus of about $100 million for the organisations four-year accounting cycle. The organisation said the bumper profits, mainly from television deals, would help bring its reserves back to $1.7 billion in 2018.Since a police raid on a FIFA congress hotel in May 2015 when seven football officials were arrested, Blatter and his two top deputies, secretary general Jerome Valcke and finance officer Markus Kattner, have been suspended or fired. The three awarded themselves huge bonuses and pay rises during their final years in power and all face criminal investigation.New FIFA president Gianni Infantino took over promising reform but also higher payments to the 200-plus national federations that are now costing FIFA dearly.Hailing his moves toward greater transparency, Infantino said: The gravity of the crisis that assailed FIFA in recent years called for equally radical measures. Our response was to express our unshakeable commitment to drawing a line under the events that had so tarnished the image and reputation of the organisation.Infantinos annual salary was stated in the accounts at $1.5 million, less than half that of Blatter.FIFA said the main cause of the 2016 loss was new accounting rules. Before they booked profits when contracts were signed, now they can only be counted when the contract, such as the World Cup, is completed.Accounting experts said, however, this change would only account for about $35 million of the 2016 loss.FIFA also spent $50 million on investigating the lingering scandals.Museum lossUS authorities have charged about 40 individuals and companies over more than $200 million in bribes paid for television and other commercial deals. Many of the defendants, who are to go on trial in New York in November, are former FIFA executive members. But the organisation also admitted that it lost $50 million on the FIFA museum that was a pet Blatter project.FIFA spent 140 million Swiss francs (130 million euros/$138 million) on the three-floor museum in Zurich which has become a huge white elephant.Since opening last year, it has attracted an average of 11,000 visitors a month, barely half the target. The organisation also suffered a multi-million dollar loss on its investment in the Ascot Hotel in Zurich which is near the museum.Amid the scandal fallout, Infantino has had to find ways to fund his promise to triple payments to national federations from $1.6 million every four years to up to $5 million.Despite the red ink headlines, FIFAs leadership says the organisation is not in trouble. The organisation predicts revenue of $5.65 billion for the four-year cycle ending with the 2018 World Cup. It said there are contracts for 76 percent of this figure.
