French expatriates vote ahead of knife-edge election

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A day before France votes for a new president, French expatriates in the Western Hemisphere cast their ballots Saturday, with some hoping to help stop a global wave of right-wing nationalism from claiming their country.Hundreds of thousands of French nationals are eligible to vote in the United States, Canada and South America in one of the most unpredictable elections in decades, seen as crucial for the future of a deeply divided country and the beleaguered European Union.Voters in the rainy US capital Washington cast their ballots in the elections first round at a polling station at the French embassy.Adrien Gontier said he was fulfilling his duty as a citizen. In the United States, you can see what happens when people dont vote, or vote badly, he said. We dont want there to be a Trump in France.US President Donald Trumps election in November on the heels of Britains decision to leave the European Union has prompted concern among critics that the French far-right candidate Marine Le Pen could be next to victory.Another voter, Marianne Hart, said she believes absentee voting will influence the elections.Everyone who lives abroad or has experienced it has a more open-minded view of the world, she said.A total of 119,773 French voters are registered in the United States, including 11,242 in Washington, 30 percent more than for the first round of the last presidential elections in 2012, according to the embassy.Security measures have been strengthened at the 69 polling stations across the country, it said, following a jihadists killing of a policeman in Paris this week that put the country on edge.- Against the extreme right -===============================In France, nearly a quarter of voters are still undecided, and surveys showed that the French have been more concerned until now about jobs and the economy than terrorism. But analysts warned that the policemans killing could shift opinions, possibly handing an advantage to candidates seen as taking a hard line on security, such as Le Pen.She and 39-year-old centrist former banker Emmanuel Macron are leading the polls, but the race has tightened in the final days and any one of four candidates could reach the runoff vote on May 7.In the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, voters cast their ballots at a polling station in the French embassy, housed in the grandiose Ortiz Basualdo Palace.Retired doctor Pierre Aguerre, 78, said he was taking part against the extreme right. This is an important moment in the history of France, he said.A lot of people have come to vote, his wife, Noemie Nabel, 75, said. I think the attacks have mobilized people.Caroline Rostain, 41, said she was surprised by a campaign that included corruption allegations and fluctuating polls.I was disappointed by so much lack of transparency and ethics during the campaign, she said. I think were lagging behind our European neighbors.

US Homeland Security probes possible abuse in Twitter summons case

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. Homeland Security Departments inspector general said on Friday he was investigating possible abuse of authority in a case that triggered a lawsuit against the department by Twitter Inc.Inspector General John Roth described the probe in a letter to Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who had asked for an investigation due to concerns about free speech protections. In a lawsuit on April 6, Twitter disclosed that it received a summons in March from the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, an agency within Homeland Security, demanding records about an account on the social media platform identified by the handle @ALT_uscis.The account has featured posts critical of President Donald Trumps immigration policies, leading Twitter to complain in its lawsuit that the summons was an unlawful attempt to suppress dissent. The agency dropped its demand of Twitter the day after the suit was filed.Customs bureau spokesman Mike Friel said on Friday that the bureau requested the inspector generals review and will fully support it.The people behind the Twitter account have not disclosed their identities, but the use of ALT with a government agency acronym has led many to assume government employees were behind the tweets critical of Trump. The lawsuit said the account claims to be the work of at least one federal immigration employee. USCIS is the acronym of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, a component of Homeland Security.Roths office is charged with investigating waste, fraud and abuse within Homeland Security. He wrote in his letter that he was looking at whether the summons to Twitter was improper in any way, including whether CBP abused its authority.DHS OIG is also reviewing potential broader misuse of summons authority at the department, he added.Wydens office posted the letter online. A representative for Roth could not immediately be reached for comment. A Twitter spokeswoman declined to comment.

Now American Airlines under fire for sobbing mother video

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Less than two weeks after United Airlines prompted a public relations crisis for dragging a passenger from his seat on an overbooked flight, rival American Airlines is trying to tamp down its own controversy. The airline said on Saturday it is investigating video of a flight attendant angrily confronting a passenger who had come to the defense of a sobbing woman with a baby in her arms.VIDEO:Confrontation between passengers, American Airlines flight attendantThe viral video, filmed by another passenger, shows a distraught mother carrying her baby boarding the plane moments after the flight attendant had apparently forcibly taken a stroller from her, with other passengers registering shock. We have seen the video and have already started an investigation to obtain the facts, American Airlines said in an email to AFP. The actions of our team member captured here do not appear to reflect patience or empathy, two values necessary for customer care. The incident on a flight from San Francisco to Dallas-Fort Worth was filmed by Surain Adyanthaya, who posted the video to her Facebook account on Friday.OMG AA Flight attendant violently took a stroller from a lady with her baby on my flight, hitting her and just missing the baby, she wrote. Then he tried to fight a passenger who stood up for her.The video does not show the first part of the incident, and begins with the woman crying uncontrollably as a pilot and other airline employees stand by impassively.Another passenger waiting to board the plane later described the preceding confrontation to the Los Angeles television station KTLA-TV.The flight attendant wrestled the stroller away from the woman, who was sobbing, holding one baby with the second baby in a car seat on the ground next to her, Olivia Morgan told the station. In the Facebook video, a seated male passenger later stands up, saying, Im not going to sit here and watch this stuff.Hey, bud, he says to the flight attendant. You do that to me, and Ill knock you flat.Hey, you stay out of this the flight attendant shouts back. The argument escalates as the female passenger with the baby, now off camera, is heard sobbing uncontrollably.Hit me, the flight attendant says to the male passenger. Come on, hit me. You dont know what the story isI dont care what the story is, the male passenger replies. You almost hurt a baby.American Airlines said the flight attendant has been removed from duty while it investigates the incident. The airlines policy says passengers can carry small collapsible strollers for checking at the gate, according to the companys website. Larger strollers must be checked in at a ticket counter. What we see on this video does not reflect our values or how we care for our customers, American said in its email. We are deeply sorry for the pain we have caused this passenger and her family and to any other customers affected by the incident. After electing to take another flight, we are taking special care of her and her family and upgrading them to first class for the remainder of their international trip, the airline added.United Airlines prompted a firestorm of controversy earlier this month after videos showed a passenger dragged from his seat during an incident in which, according to his lawyer, he lost two front teeth and suffered a broken nose and a concussion. The scandal set off widespread criticism about the treatment of passengers by an industry that has slashed perks and customer service in recent years.
