Windies revival frustrates Pakistan in first Test

Posted:

KINGSTON (AFP) - Half-centuries by Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich engineered a West Indies revival in reaching 244 for seven at stumps against Pakistan on the opening day of the first Test at Sabina Park on Friday.Coming together immediately after lunch when opener Kieran Powell became Mohammad Amirs third wicket with the innings in tatters at 71 for five, Chase batted with confidence and fluency for a top score of 63.His sixth-wicket partnership with Dowrich was worth 118 runs, the wicketkeeper-batsman enhancing his reputation with a polished 56, the pair making a mockery of the West Indies earlier struggles after they were put in to bat.On the same ground where an unbeaten hundred in just his second Test match saved the West Indies from defeat against India a year earlier, Chase looked at ease against all bowlers although his penchant for the uncontrolled hook resulted in a couple of narrow escapes.Yet it was Yasir Shah who removed both him and Dowrich off successive deliveries in the final session.Made to look ordinary by the pairs positive play through the afternoon, the leg-spinner had the last laugh when he lured Chase into the lofted stroke and Wahab Riaz held an outstanding catch running back from mid-off almost to the boundary rope.Dowrich was then completely deceived and bowled by the next delivery. At 189 for seven, Pakistans hopes of dismissing the West Indies on the opening day were revived, only for captain Jason Holder (30 not out) and specialist spinner Devendra Bishoo (23 not out) to frustrate the visitors with an enterprising unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 55.Earlier, Mohammad Abbas had a dream start to his Test career, having Kraigg Brathwaite caught at second slip by Younis Khan without scoring with his second delivery sharing the new ball with Amir.It was an important early breakthrough as the opener had made history in their last Test match meeting with unbeaten scores of 142 and 60 that earned the Caribbean side a five-wicket win in Sharjah last November at the end of an otherwise miserable tour of the United Arab Emirates.West Indies played two debutants in the middle-order in the pair of Guyanese left-handers Shimron Hetmyer and Vishaul Singh, and Pakistan pressed the advantage even further with Aamir claiming his first wickets for three Test matches.Maintaining a nagging accuracy, the left-arm fast bowler bowled both Hetmyer and Shai Hope, scattering the stumps with deliveries that jagged in sharply off a good length.Pakistans third seamer in their bowling armoury, Riaz, then removed Singh via a fine diving catch by Azhar Ali at backward square-leg to have the home side tottering at that point at 53 for four.West Indies opted to omit Jermaine Blackwood from their final eleven to accommodate the debutants in the batting line-up, meaning there was no Jamaican in the home side for a Test match at Sabina Park for the first time since 1997 when, incidentally, the opponents were also Pakistan.Notwithstanding his impressive entry to senior international cricket during the limited-over leg of the tour, the visitors resisted the temptation to include the uncapped Shadab Khan in their team as a second spinner in support of Shah, choosing instead to introduce 27-year-old Abbas to Test cricket. This is the 50th Test between the two nations and also the 50th Test match to be played at Sabina Park since the very first at the venue in 1930.

Chase, Dowrich lead Windies recovery

KINGSTON (AFP) - An unbroken 72-run partnership between Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich gave the West Indies a measure of respectability in reaching 143 for five at tea on the opening day of the first Test at Sabina Park on Friday.Chase (47 not out) and wicketkeeper-batsman Dowrich (27 not out) came together in the first over after lunch when opener Kieran Powell fell for 33 to a second slip catch by Younis Khan, reducing the home side to 71 for five and giving Mohammad Amir his third wicket of the innings. On the same ground where an unbeaten hundred in just his second Test match saved the West Indies from defeat against India a year earlier, Chase again batted confidently against all bowlers. His only moments of vulnerability came when he top-edged two attempted hook shots which fell clear of fielders lurking for the opportunity behind square on the leg-side boundary.Dowrich hardly looked troubled on a pitch that proved helpful to Pakistans seamers in the morning session but appeared to lose much of its life in the afternoon.Earlier, Mohammad Abbas had a dream start to his Test career after his captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, chose to bat first on winning the toss.He struck with his second delivery, having Kraigg Brathwaite caught at second slip, also by Khan, without scoring. It represented important early success for the tourists as the opener had made history in their last Test match meeting with unbeaten scores of 142 and 60 that earned the Caribbean side a five-wicket win in Sharjah last November at the end of an otherwise miserable tour of the United Arab Emirates. With the West Indies fielding two debutants in the middle-order in the pair of Guyanese left-handers Shimron Hetmyer and Vishaul Singh, Pakistan pressed the advantage even further with Amir claiming his first wickets for three Test matches.Maintaining a nagging accuracy, the left-arm fast bowler bowled both Hetmyer and Shai Hope, scattering the stumps with deliveries that jagged in sharply off a good length.Pakistans third seamer in their bowling armoury, Wahab Riaz, then removed Singh via a fine diving catch by Azhar Ali at backward square-leg to have the home side tottering at that point at 53 for four.West Indies opted to omit Jermaine Blackwood from their final eleven to accommodate the debutants in the batting line-up, meaning there was no Jamaican in the home side for a Test match at Sabina Park for the first time since 1997 when, incidentally, the opponents were also Pakistan.Notwithstanding his impressive entry to senior international cricket during the limited-over leg of the tour, the visitors resisted the temptation to include the uncapped Shadab Khan in their team as a second spinner in support of Yasir Shah, choosing instead to introduce27-year-old Abbas to Test cricket. This is the 50th Test between the two nations and also the 50th Test match to be played at Sabina Park since the very first at the venue in 1930.

Injured Rahul set to miss Champions Trophy

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indias Lokesh Rahul has all but ruled himself out of the upcoming Champions Trophy after suffering a shoulder injury during the Australia Test series. The opening batsman underwent surgery in England last week, likely ending any chance of playing in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament.Rahul, 25, suffered the injury to his left shoulder during the first Test of the recent Border-Gavaskar series which India won 2-1, but played out the four-match rubber despite the pain.Rahul scored six fifties in seven Test innings against Australia to finish as his sides second highest run-scorer (393 at 65.50) behind Cheteshwar Pujara (405).But the elegant right-handed batsman rued the fact he might not be up to scratch for the one-day international showpiece tournament starting June 1 in England.I will just have to wait and see but the chances are very, very slim, Rahul was quoted as saying by the Times of India.I couldnt get into a few positions because my shoulder kept dislocating.Thats why I couldnt play a lot of shots, had to restrict myself. I played with a lot of medication and taping. Surgery was to fix it on the inside.Rahul, who has played just six ODIs for India, participated in all the three one-day matches against England at home in January and is disappointed with the prospect of missing out on further action. The doctor said it will take two-three months (to recover). Each body is different, so you dont know how it recovers. For now, it is two to three weeks of relaxing and after that, I will start physiotherapy. My rehab will start from there, said Rahul.Defending champions India are placed in Group B with arch-rivals Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka in the eight-team event.

IMF sees 'breathing space' in Middle East, Central Asia

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Rising growth outside the troubled oil sector is offering some relief to economies in the Middle East and Central Asia, a senior IMF economist said Friday. But the subdued overall outlook is not enough to spur needed job growth and reduce poverty, according to Jihad Azour, the new head of the International Monetary Funds Middle East and Central Asia department.A more favorable environment, including higher-than-expected growth and some firming up of commodity prices is providing some breathing space, he told reporters during the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington. In its World Economic Outlook this week, the fund said Middle East oil exporters would see growth drop precipitously in 2017 as producing countries cope with lower petroleum production and fiscal reforms.Middle East economies, taken together with those of Afghanistan and Pakistan, should expand at a rate of 2.6 percent -- a 1.3 percentage point decline from 2016s estimated growth rate. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in November acted to stabilize tumbling oil prices by agreeing to the first production cuts in eight years. But Azour said Friday that growth outside the oil sector in oil exporting countries was on the rise, expected to shoot up from 0.4 percent in 2016 to 2.9 percent in 2017.Although the production cuts following the OPEC agreement are reducing the headline growth, he added. For oil importers, meanwhile, the IMF expects growth to rise from 2016s 3.7 percent to four percent this year, Azour said. While this represents an improvement, our medium-term growth projections are too low to create enough jobs and improve the living standards, he said. Many countries, especially oil importers, are also carrying a high level of debt.Azour said the fund was encouraged by regional governments efforts to introduce new taxes and reform energy subsidies, noting that recent gains in oil prices should help reduce fiscal deficits. But even oil importers were running an average debt-to-GDP ratio of 80 percent, he said. Therefore fiscal reforms and fiscal consolidation will remain an ongoing priority across the region.
