Golf: Unheralded Hoffman leads Masters after Johnson agony

Posted:

AUGUSTA (AFP) - Unheralded Charley Hoffman takes a four-shot lead into Fridays Masters second round after high winds punished the worlds top golfers and favorite Dustin Johnson withdrew injured.Hoffman, 40, posted a seven-under par 65 in conditions described by one former Masters winner as borderline unplayable. He snatched the lead over second-placed fellow American William McGirt on a day of high drama that saw world number one Johnson pull out following a freak accident.Hoffmans four-stroke lead is the largest at the Masters after 18 holes since 1955, when Jack Burke led by the same margin over Julius Boros. In the difficult conditions, Hoffman said he set out to shoot for par but got a little bit lucky. For lack of any better words, it was a dream, he said.Englands Lee Westwood, 43, still looking for a major title after 75 attempts, was in third place a shot further back on 70 on a day when top contenders suffered in difficult conditions on the 7,435-yard Augusta National course.Johnson agonized for 24 hours before pulling out after a serious fall on the eve of the tournament left him in pain from a lower back injury.I wanted to try and play but Im not going to be able to compete, he said. It just sucks.Reigning US Open champion Johnson had been the oddsmakers favorite in the years first major golf championship after winning his three prior starts but hurt himself in a fall down stairs Wednesday at a rental house.Without the world number one, Northern Irelands second-ranked Rory McIlroy and Australian world number three Jason Day were tipped to be key contenders for the title. However, neither had it their own way in the opening round.Nor did another top contender, former Masters champion Jordon Spieth, who suffered a repeat of last years quadruple-bogey disaster. The 2013 Masters champion, Adam Scott of Australia, said the conditions were beyond tough. Its very difficult conditions and borderline (unplayable), he said after returning a three-over 75.Steady but swirling winds above 20 mph (32 kph) with gusts twice that speed sending tee shots and approaches soaring off target and even kept balls rolling on greens.Four-time major champion McIlroy appeared to be struggling in the wind and was three-over after the front nine.He opened with a bogey on the first hole and dropped shots on the third and fifth to make the turn in 39. But on the way back he sank three birdies to salvage a 72 and a share of 12th place. My short game really saved me today -- 10, 11 and 12 -- to get up and down was huge, he said.Even par was a pretty great score out there at the end of the day and Im happy with it.McIlroy was one shot behind Englands 2013 US Open champion Justin Rose, who was in an eight-way tie for fourth on 71.Day also suffered in the conditions, returning a two-over 74 with a double-bogey on the 11th hole to share 26th place. For 2015 Masters champion Spieth, the day turned sour on the back nine in a near repeat of the quadruple-bogey nightmare that cost him back-to-back titles last year. The American, twice a Masters runner-up, had been five shots ahead on the final day last year before he imploded after taking seven shots on the par-3 12th.This time out, he negotiated the 12th hole in regulation but took a nine on the par-5 15th, ballooning his score before sinking a birdie at 16 to limit the damage to finish on 3-over 75.Spieth said the quadruple-bogey blowout put him under pressure for the following three days.I feel like I need to snag something tomorrow, he said. One man who thrived in the conditions was three-time former Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who fired a 71 for a share of fourth place.Man, I love it, Mickelson said. I thought anything at par or better was going to be a great score and it is.The 46-year-old US left-hander will replace Jack Nicklaus as the oldest winner in Masters history if he can collect a fourth green jacket on Sunday.

Golf: Back injury forces top-ranked Johnson out of Masters

Posted:

AUGUSTA (AFP) - Top-ranked Dustin Johnson withdrew from the 81st Masters with a lower back injury, walking off the first tee Thursday to end a 24-hour drama surrounding the Augusta National favorite. The reigning US Open champion had been the oddsmakers darling in the years first major golf championship after winning his three prior starts but hurt himself in a fall down stairs Wednesday at a rental house. Its unbelievably difficult. I feel like Im playing the best golf of my career now. For me to pull out, it sucks really bad, Johnson said.Im very sad I have to do it but its just a freak accident. I wanted to try and play but Im not going to be able to compete.Johnson had tested his swing and even went to the first tee, but instead of teeing off just walked back to the clubhouse shaking his head, having to admit defeat after a rigorous warm-up session.I could swing maybe 70 percent was about max. It still hurt, Johnson said. I could take it back. It was impact and through impact that it would catch.I wouldnt be able to compete. My heart was in it. I wanted to play. The more I thought about it, I wasnt going to have any chance.Johnson had as much time as possible to recover. He was to have joined two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and 2016 PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker in the days final group.Johnson became only the fourth world number one to miss a major championship, the first since Rory McIlroy withdrew from the 2015 British Open. The only other top-ranked player to miss the Masters was Tiger Woods, who did not play in 2014 after back surgery.Australian star Greg Norman, who had his own history of heartache at Augusta National and never won a green jacket, missed the 1988 British Open as number one.The will he-wont he saga began when Johnson, clad in his socks on a slick wooden floor, tumbled down a short flight on stairs on the way to the basement. The tale reached its emotional peak when Johnson arrived at the course and practiced his swings as television analysts watched his every move. After a physical therapy session, Johnson tested his swing for several minutes under the watchful gaze of his caddie, brother Austin Johnson, and swing coach Butch Harmon, then returned for more therapy. One saving grace is that the injury, which includes an elbow bruise, should bar Johnson from future tournaments. It feels like by Saturday or Sunday I will be just fine and Ill be able to play golf again, Johnson said. Its just right this second I cant swing. It just sucks.Johnson had been the man to beat when the week began, coming into the Masters on a hot run by winning in February at Riviera to take the top rankings spot, then adding triumphs at the World Golf Championships Mexico and Match-Play events. He withdrew from last weeks Houston Open, citing fatigue after taking seven matches to win the title and become the first player to win all four WGC events, never trailing after any of the 112 holes he played at the Austin, Texas, event.Johnson would have been the first player since 1976 to enter the Masters on a three-tournament win streak. The only player to win three in a row and then capture the Masters was Jimmy Demaret in 1940.

Motorcycling: Rossi reaches 350 races in battle of ages

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Valentino Rossi races in a record-setting 350th grand prix in Argentina on Sunday determined to prove that at 38 he will not be overshadowed by teammate Maverick Vinales, who blitzed the season-opener in Qatar.Rossi, a nine-time world champion, was third in the rain and wind of the Qatari desert after starting from 10th on the grid on a weekend when Vinales, 16 years his junior, dominated on his first outing for Yamaha. It wasnt an easy start to the championship but I was very happy to be able to get on the podium, said Rossi. Now we go to Argentina. This is a track that I like very much and Im happy to go there. I hope that there are good asphalt conditions because last year it was difficult for us.Rossi came home in second place at the dusty and hot Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in Argentina last year having taken victory 12 months earlier. But his former teammate Jorge Lorenzo, whose decision to move to Ducati opened the door for Vinales at Yamaha, believes that the flying Spaniard could end up making Rossi feel his age this season. Its nothing easy for Valentino to keep racing MotoGP at his age, Lorenzo told www.motorsports.com.The second oldest rider is maybe 32, and hes 38. I guess when you become 38 every season is tougher than the one before; thats something Rossi recognises himself. You dont see many 38-year-olds as fast as Rossi. Its not something easy and even less when you have an outstanding and strong teammate like Maverick. However, former Suzuki pilot Vinales, who became the second youngest rider to win in the premier class for two different manufacturers, just behind Mike Hailwood with his Qatar triumph, recognises that he is already a marked man.We have the difficult challenge to continue getting good results, Qatar was only the first race of 18, said the Spaniard.I can feel the pressure a little bit because the level of my rivals is very high, but that motivates me even more to keep working hard. We have to be cautious, work step by step and race by race. The Argentina race is also a key test for defending world champion Marc Marquez after the Spaniard managed just fourth place in Qatar on his Honda.I must fight for the podium, said the Spaniard, a two-time winner at the race and world champion in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

US launches missile strike against Syria

Posted:

PALM BEACH (AFP) - President Donald Trump ordered a massive military strike on a Syrian air base on Thursday in retaliation for a barbaric chemical attack he blamed on President Bashar al-Assad.In a brief televised address delivered hours after the UN Security Council failed to agree on a prove into the apparent chemical attack, Trump confirmed the US strike on Syria and urged all civilized nations to unite to end the bloodshed in the country. On Tuesday Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad launched a horrible chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians using a deadly nerve agent, Trump said. Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack.Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched. It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.Tonight I call on all civilized nations to join us in seeking to end this slaughter and bloodshed in Syria and also to end terrorism of all kinds and all types, Trump said. The US military fired dozens of cruise missiles at the Shayrat Airfield at 8:45 pm Eastern Time (0000 GMT), officials said.A White House official said 59 precision munitions had been blasted at the base, while a US defense official said dozens of Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched. The missiles were fired from the USS Porter and the USS Ross, which belong to the US Navys Sixth Fleet and are located in the eastern Mediterranean. A US official said the missiles targeted aircraft and runways at the base. The sudden US military action against the Assad regime marks a stunning development in Syrias brutal, six-year conflict and a sudden about-face for Trump. It came despite a warning from Russia of potential negative consequences if Washington strikes Syria. All responsibility if military action occurs will be on the shoulders of those who initiated such a doubtful tragic enterprise, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vladimir Safronkov said.A US official said Washington had informed Russia ahead of the Syria strike.US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had earlier vowed an appropriate response to the attack in Khan Sheikhun in rebel-held Idlib province, which killed at least 86 people, including 27 children. The White House official said the United States assesses that the Assad regime used a chemical nerve agent consistent with sarin in Tuesdays attacks. The fast-moving events come just days after the Trump administration had signaled it was no longer seeking the Syrian leaders departure from power. The attack on Khan Sheikhun appears to have marked a turning point for Trump and his administration. On Wednesday Trump decried the attack as an affront to humanity. He seemed horrified by photographs showing dead children and victims suffering convulsions, breathing problems and foaming at the mouth. It crossed a lot of lines for me, Trump said, alluding to Barack Obamas failure to enforce his own red line on the use of chemical weapons in Syria four years ago.In 2013, Trump had urged then-president Obama not to intervene against Assad. In a startling about-turn, Tillerson called Thursday for a political process that would lead to Assad leaving and said his future role in the country was uncertain.Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem on Thursday repeated the regimes denial it conducted a chemical strike. The Syrian army has not, did not and will not use this kind of weapons -- not just against our own people, but even against the terrorists that attack our civilians with their mortar rounds, he said.Russia has stood by its longtime ally, with President Vladimir Putin warning against a rush to judgment.Putin underlined the unacceptability of making unfounded accusations against anyone before a thorough and impartial international investigation is carried out.The UN childrens agency UNICEF says at least 546 people were wounded in the suspected chemical attack.More than 30 people were transferred across the border into Turkey for treatment, and Ankara said a preliminary probe found a link between these injuries and sarin.

Russia at UN warns US over possible military action in Syria

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Russia warned the United States on Thursday that there could be negative consequences if Washington takes military action against Syria. All responsibility if military action occurs will be on the shoulders of those who initiated such a doubtful tragic enterprise, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov told reporters following a closed-door Security Council meeting on Syria.Safronkov said he had been frank during the meeting, telling the council: We have to think about the negative consequences.Look at Iraq, look at Libya, he said, referring to Western interventions in those countries that unleashed years of chaos. The United States threatened Syria with military action as President Donald Trump warned something should happen following a suspected chemical attack that left at least 86 dead -- including 27 children -- and provoked global outrage. The Security Council emerged from a nearly two-hour meeting with no agreement on how to press forward with an investigation of the attack on Khan Sheikhun in rebel-held Idlib province. Results from post-mortems performed on victims point to exposure to the deadly sarin nerve agent, according to Turkish health officials.Three separate draft resolutions were under discussion in the Security Council.Britain, France and the United States had pushed for a vote on their proposed measure, but decided to hold off during the meeting. Diplomats said a vote now was more likely on Friday. The Russian ambassador said the decision to postpone the vote opens up a window for further work on a compromise.Russia has rejected the Western-backed resolution as categorically unacceptable and put forward a rival draft that does not include specific demands for cooperation from the Syrian government.Seeking to avert a clash between Russia and the West, 10 Security Council countries circulated a compromise resolution, but the text drew a cool response from the United States.A council diplomat said the United States was showing no flexibility.Britain, France and the United States blame President Bashar al-Assads forces for the attack that they have described as a war crime, but the Syrian army has denied any involvement.

UN council weighs compromise on Syria gas attacks probe

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Seeking to avert a clash between Russia and the West, 10 Security Council countries on Thursday circulated a compromise resolution demanding a full investigation of the suspected chemical attack in Syria, diplomats said. The new text -- the third now before the council on investigating the apparent gas attack -- was presented ahead of a closed-door meeting of the 15-member council on Syria at 6:30 pm (2230 GMT).It remained unclear if Russia or the other four permanent council members would back the compromise presented as the United States was weighing military options in Syria.Britain, France and the United States are pushing for a vote later Thursday on their draft text in response to the strike Tuesday on a rebel-held town in Idlib province that shocked the world. At least 86 people -- including 27 children -- died in Khan Sheikhun. Results from post-mortems performed on victims point to exposure to the deadly sarin nerve agent, according to Turkish health officials.Britain, France and the United States are permanent council members along with Russia and China. The 10 non-permanent members are Egypt, Japan, Senegal, Ukraine, Uruguay, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Italy, Kazakhstan and Sweden.Their compromise text would drop demands that Syria hand over information on its military operations on the day of the strike, replacing them with language from a previous resolution urging cooperation on chemical weapons investigations, diplomats said. There are efforts to find a way forward that might be a compromise, Swedish Ambassador Olof Skoog told reporters. We are going to try to make sure we have a good discussion before there are any votes.Russia has rejected the proposed Western-backed resolution as categorically unacceptable and put forward a rival draft that does not include specific demands that the Syrian government cooperate with an investigation. The Russian text calls for an investigation but requests that the council approve the makeup of the team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) dispatched to Idlib, according to the draft seen by AFP.

Trump, Xi at Mar-a-Lago for high-stakes summit

Posted:

PALM BEACH (AFP) - President Donald Trump greeted Xi Jinping to his Florida resort of Mar-a-Lago with a smile and a handshake Thursday, as cordiality replaced tough anti-China rhetoric during a first face-to-face encounter.Trump, in his signature red power tie, welcomed his Chinese counterpart Xi, decked out in contrasting blue, to what the US leader likes to call the Winter White House for a superpower summit in the sun. This is the first time the two leaders meet, after a US election that featured frequent barbs at Chinas rape of the US economy.Trump had also ridiculed his predecessors decision to offer Xi a coveted state dinner, saying that -- if elected -- he would serve the 63-year-old a Big Mac.But inside Mar-a-Lagos ornate dining room -- with gold-trimmed chairs, fine cut glass and polished silverware -- there was little indication that McDonalds will be on the menu later Thursday. The open agenda and the personal setting for the 24-hour summit are designed to allow the leaders to freewheel and build a rapport, in what is the worlds most important relationship.Amid concerns about security and public perceptions, Xi and his wife are not staying at Mar-a-Lago, but at a resort and spa a short drive down the palm-fringed coast that is, for now, watched by snipers, tactical units and a coastguard cutter. But Matt Pottinger, the top White House Asia expert who was tasked with planning the summit, promised a relaxed interaction despite a backdrop of tensions over trade and North Korea. The two leaders will be joined Thursday evening by US first lady and former model Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan -- a celebrated folk singer who was once more famous than her husband. The group will have an opportunity to have tea together, meet some of their senior cabinet officials, so to speak, on both sides, and have a dinner, Pottinger added.Talks will continue up to a working lunch on Friday, that are likely to turn to more serious issues. The summit has been somewhat overshadowed by renewed missile tests in North Korea and an apparent chemical attack in Syria that could prompt US military action. The UN Security Council -- where both China and the United States hold a veto -- is expected to meet later to discuss a response to Bashar al-Assads Syrian regime. No one -- neither diplomats nor aides -- could be sure what would happen when the most powerful Chinese leader in a generation met a mercurial American president who has been in office less than 100 days and is capable of unraveling the most carefully-laid plans with a single 140-character tweet. For that reason Xi arrived with a gift-basket of tweetable deliverables, sources say, peace offerings on Trumps signature issues -- trade and jobs -- that he hopes will smooth over a relationship that began on shaky ground following disagreements over Taiwan.Top of the list, according to a source briefed on Xis plans, will be a package of Chinese investments aimed at creating more than 700,000 American jobs -- the number pledged to Trump by Chinas regional rival Japan, during Prime Minister Shinzo Abes February Mar-a-Lago visit. There may also be offers to further open Chinas auto and agricultural markets, insiders say, and even some concessions on Chinese banks transactions with North Korea, a vital financial lifeline for the country. In return, Xi hopes to get assurances from Trump on punitive tariffs and that an American arms sale to Taiwan will be delayed, at least until after a major Communist Party meeting later this year.Trumps position on democratically-ruled Taiwan, which China considers a breakaway province, has been a major irritant since the billionaire politician accepted a protocol-breaking phone call from the Taiwanese president after his election victory. The summit stakes, both domestic and international, are high.Disagreements over approaches to North Korea or bilateral trade could, if mishandled, destabilize North East Asia or tank the global economy. On the domestic political front, Xi is heading into a critical year. Ahead of a party congress that could cement his grip on power for years to come, he needs to show that he can deal with the US leader as an equal. He cannot afford to lose face while China aspires to be the new center of gravity for the world order, China political analyst Willy Lam told AFP.Meanwhile, Trump -- who is reeling from legislative defeats, low approval ratings and unrelenting scandals -- desperately needs a win.On the US side, however, North Korea will likely top the agenda following Wednesdays provocative missile launch. The Trump White House worries Pyongyang is just months away from marrying nuclear and long-range missile technology and putting the west coast of the United States within striking distance. While Beijing has condemned the missile tests, it has hesitated to take dramatic action against Pyongyang, fearing that the countrys collapse would generate a flood of refugees across its borders and leave the US military on its doorstep.
