Cook century sees Essex to big victory

LONDON (AFP) - Alastair Cook marked his first match since resigning as England Test captain by scoring a century as Essex thrashed Somerset by eight wickets in the First Division of the County Championship on Sunday.Cook is determined to continue his Test career under new skipper Joe Root and the left-handed opener, Englands record Test run-scorer, was in excellent form at Taunton as he made a chanceless hundred. He eventually fell for 110 when he pulled a short ball from South African batsman Dean Elgar, bowling his occasional left-arm spin, to James Hildreth at mid-wicket.Cook batted for over four hours, facing 214 balls and hitting 16 fours. His exit left Essex 216 for two but by then the visitors were in sight of a victory target of 255, which they achieved without further loss.Tom Westley was 86 not out as Essex celebrated their return to the top flight by winning with more than a day to spare at the home of last seasons runners-up.Cook resigned as Englands Test skipper following their 4-0 series loss in India late last year. Now that he no longer plays international white-ball cricket, the 32-year-old Cook is not due to represent England again until the first Test against South Africa at Lords on July 6.

N Korea behaviour 'can't continue', Trump advisor warns after missile test

Posted:

WASHINGTON: (AFP) - The United States slammed North Koreas latest missile test as a provocation and insisted Sunday it is working closely with China to resolve a crisis that Washington sees as reaching a critical stage.Amid broader fears that North Korea may again test a nuclear bomb, the Pentagon said Sundays missile launch was a failure, with the weapon blowing up almost immediately after its early morning takeoff near Sinpo on North Koreas east coast.Following the test, US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told ABC News: Theres an international consensus now -- including the Chinese and the Chinese leadership -- that this is a situation that just cant continue.Amid sharply heightened tensions, McMaster said the US and allies were studying all actions short of a military option, though the Trump administration has not ruled that out.North Korea watchers remained on high alert, as leader Kim Jong-un was reportedly poised to conduct a sixth nuclear test.Vice President Mike Pence, who arrived in Seoul on Sunday, assailed the missile test as a provocation and assured South Korea of Washingtons full support against the threat from its volatile neighbor.Pence is in Seoul for talks on curbing the Norths weapons programs. This mornings provocation from the North is just the latest reminder of the risks each one of you face each and every day in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world, Pence told US military families at an Easter dinner, at the start of a 10-day Asia tour. Some 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea.President Donald Trump has ordered a naval strike group, led by the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, to the region, though the vessels remain a long way from the peninsula.McMaster repeatedly stated that China -- North Koreas key ally -- is increasingly concerned about the reclusive communist states behavior. The new consensus is that this problem is coming to a head. And so its time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully, McMaster said.Trump turned to Twitter to underscore the importance of cooperation with China on North Korea.Having blasted Beijing throughout his presidential campaign for unfairly manipulating its currency, he tweeted Sunday: Why would I call China a currency manipulator when they are working with us on the North Korean problem? We will see what happens

Mourinho revels in Manchester United's Chelsea ambush

Posted:

MANCHESTER: (AFP) - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said his risky tactical approach had been vindicated after his side stunned Premier League leaders Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday.Facing his former club, Mourinho rested top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic and charged Ander Herrera and Matteo Darmian with the task of man-marking Chelsea dangermen Eden Hazard and Pedro.Chelsea were successfully nullified, failing to register a single shot on target in a league game for the first time since 2007, and now lead second-place Tottenham Hotspur by just four points.Maybe we didnt rest players ahead of Thursday (when United play Anderlecht in the Europa League), we just chose the team we thought was the best team, Mourinho told Sky Sports at Old Trafford. We went to Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup with the same tactics (when United lost 1-0).The game was totally controlled with 11 players, only the decision that made us play with 10 men for the second half and 10 minutes in the first half gave Chelsea a chance to be dominant. We knew that playing this way would be very difficult for them.In Uniteds 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Chelsea last month Herrera was sent off in the first half after being shown a second yellow card for a foul on Hazard. This time he was Uniteds match-winner, setting up Marcus Rashfords seventh-minute opener and netting with a deflected shot early in the second half.Herrera, who denied deliberately handling the ball prior to setting up Rashfords opener, said Uniteds display had been almost perfect.Mourinho was goaded with chants of Judas during Uniteds FA Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge, but he said he took no special satisfaction from getting one over on his former club.I dont feel extra joy at beating Chelsea, he said.We beat the leader. It doesnt matter if the leader is Chelsea or another. We beat them convincingly. Nobody can doubt our credit to win the game.Beaten manager Antonio Conte took responsibility for Chelseas defeat. They deserved to win because they showed more desire than us, more motivation, said the Italian, whose side face Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-finals next weekend. In this case, the fault is the coach. It is mine. In this case I wasnt able to do the right motivation. To play this type of game from now and until the end, we must have great enthusiasm, great motivation to try to reach the target.

Builders find lost archbishops in London crypt

LONDON (AFP) - The remains of five archbishops of Canterbury have been accidentally discovered by builders in a hidden tomb beneath a London church, site developers said Sunday. Some 20 lead coffins were discovered in a crypt underneath St Marys-at-Lambeth, which sits outside Lambeth Palace, the central London residence of the archbishop of Canterbury -- the highest cleric in England. Two have been identified from name plates, while records show that five were buried in the crypt.Of the two identiied archbishops, one is Richard Bancroft, who was in office from 1604 to 1610 and who oversaw the production of the King James Bible, considered a definitive work of the English language.Several hundred coffins were cleared out of the church for extensive renovation works in 1850s, during which the vaults were filled in with earth. But builders accidentally discovered one crypt had been left untouched. This was the discovery of a recorded vault below the chancel for high status burials, including those of five archbishops of Canterbury, said the trust which runs the site. The deconsecrated church is now the Garden Museum. It closed in October 2015 for renovations. The discovery of the hidden crypt was made by builders during the re-laying of ledger stones. We were lifting the slabs and we uncovered an entry to what looked like a tomb, said site manager Karl Patten. We got a camera on the end of a stick and discovered numerous coffins and one of them had a gold crown on top of it.The crown was an archbishops mitre.Among the jumbled coffins found, four had name plates, including those of Bancroft and John Moore, who was the archbishop of Canterbury from 1783 to 1805.Finding the coffin of Bancroft, the man who oversaw the English languages landmark Bible, is the most incredible discovery, said historian Wesley Kerr.Church records fished out since the discovery have revealed that three more archbishops were likely buried in the vault: Thomas Tenison (1695-1715), Matthew Hutton (1757-1758) and Frederick Cornwallis (1768-1783).The archbishop of Canterbury is the leader of the worlds Anglicans and the spiritual head of the Church of England.Garden Museum director Christopher Woodward said: We know there are five archbishops buried here. What we still dont know is who else is down there. The museum is due to reopen next month. The coffins have been left undisturbed and a glass panel will allow visitors to see down into the vault.

Turkey opposition slams election board over last minute changes

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Turkeys No camp, which opposes expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogans powers, on Sunday slammed the election commission for a last-minute change to the rules for voting in a tightly-contested referendum, saying it opened the way for fraud. The Yes camp was narrowly ahead of its opponents in a tightly contested poll whose outcome is considerably closer than expected by the government. The Supreme Election Board (YSK) on Sunday said that voting papers not stamped by the board will be counted valid unless proven to be brought from outside, in a controversial announcement. In a statement posted on its website, the board said it received many complaints over the fact voters were given envelopes without stamps from officials. The board, which convened on Sunday, decided that ballot papers without stamps and envelopes will be counted valid unless proven they were brought from outside. The election boards announcement was slammed by the opposition Republican Peoples Party (CHP), as well as dissidents from the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).The MHP backs the government-driven changes to strengthen Erdogans powers but a significant dissident faction does not.The CHPs deputy leader Bulent Tezcan urged the YSK to reverse this error and to take steps in order to ensure that elections were held under judicial safeguard.Rules of the game do not change after the match starts, CHP MP Sezgin Tanrikulu told AFP.With its announcement, the YSK has changed the rules of the game. This decision must be revised for fair and honest elections, he said.Sinan Ogan, a MHP dissident, blasted the announcement as a scandal, in a message on his official Twitter account. The boards decision is a scandal and opens the way for fraud.Critics say a switch to presidential system is part of a grab by Erdogan for one-man rule, but supporters say it will simply put Turkey in line with France and the United States and is needed for efficient government.
