ISLAMABAD (APP) - Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Marriyum Aurangzeb Wednesday attributed the PTI defeat in Chakwal by-election to Imran Khan’s politics of disruption and chaos, and congratulated him on losing the election that his party contested with the support of all the opposition parties. In a statement issued here she said, “The people of Pakistan, like always, have given their verdict in favour of the Prime Minister in the Chakwal by-election. They have strongly rejected the politics of disruption, chaos and false allegations that has been the hallmark of Imran’s politics, designed to obstruct the development process.”The minister also congratulated Imran on the inauguration of Bhikki power plant by the Prime Minister saying that the people were waiting for progress in Pakistan under the stewardship of the Prime Minister and not the Panama verdict. That was why they had voted for the PML-N candidate and sealed the victory for the party, she added. The minister said that the people had already announced their verdict and support for the PML-N in the by-elections, local body elections, polls in AJK and Gilgit—Baltistan and the victory in Chakwal yesterday had driven the last nail in the coffin of PTI.Marriyum Aurangzeb said the politics of chaos and violence that Imran had taught and preached to his party workers, was instrumental to incidents like the one in Mardan. The minister expressed the hope that the Prime Minister would be vindicated tomorrow because 200 million people of Pakistan were praying for him and had unswerving faith and trust in his leadership that strongly believed in service to the people.Marriyum said that during the last four years Imran had done nothing except reckless indulgence in ridiculing the constitutional institutions, disgracing and denigrating opponents and hurling invectives at them. Now he had pinned all his hopes on the SC decision in the Panama case, she observed. The minister said that the time for false arguments and allegations had passed therefore he should wait till 2 pm today (Thursday).

SC to announce Panama Papers case verdict today

Posted:

SLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Supreme Court of Pakistan will announce its verdict in the Panama Papers case today (Thursday), Dunya News reported. The verdict will be announced at 2:00pm.The Panama Papers case was heard by a five-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa. The verdict was reserved by the Apex court on February 23, 2017.The Supreme Court could take a range of steps. It could clear the prime minister, or order a further judicial commission of inquiry or even declare him ineligible to hold office, as it did in 2012 with then-Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani over a contempt of court case.Panama Papers had published a leak of documents belonging to Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm on April 4, 2016. The leak named over 400 incumbent as well as former leaders of the world who owned offshore companies which were interpreted by the commentators as means to stash wealth abroad.Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s family; two sons and a daughter were named in the documents which were studied by International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.Opposition parties in Pakistan saw the published documents as proof of alleged money laundering done by the premier. Questions over the source of money used to purchase flats in London s posh Mayfair locality by Sharif family were raised by opposition leaders.Leader of one of the opposition parties, Imran Khan used the leak to accuse the government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz of misleading the nation and looting hard-earned money of the taxpayers.Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, in leadership of Imran Khan managed to draw a consensus of opposition parties to demand the premier to resign and offer himself for accountability.PM Nawaz addressed the nation twice, once on April 5 and April 22 to take the nation in confidence and denied corruption accusations. He offered to form a judicial commission to probe the leaks against his family which was denied by opposition parties.Later, the Prime Minister offered to establish a parliamentary committee to form joint Terms of References to have the issue probed by the apex court. On the floor of the House in May, PM Nawaz categorically denied the allegations and claimed that no money was stashed in foreign bank accounts by his family.Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly, Khurshid Shah called off the protest against the government and absence of PM Nawaz in the House delaying due explanation and took him up on his offer.Six representatives of the two sides each convened several meetings, some held at residence of Leader of the Opposition in Senate, Aitzaz Ahsan, but failed to chalk out joint Terms of References to have the premier probed by a bench of the top court. The representatives of the government and the opposition, referred to by the media and the masses as TOR committee, never agreed on joint Terms of References. On political front, Imran Khan and other parties were successful by then to develop an agenda for the people through across-the-country rallies and media barrage of statements that drew counter-narrative explanations.Around the time when Imran Khan warned the government of alleged lockdown of the federal capital last year, the apex court took up the case on October 20 and condensed the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamaat-e-Islami and Awami Muslim League against the premier. On November 7, family of the premier filed replies in the top court and on November 14, PTI submitted evidence against the Sharif family.Hearing of the case was adjourned on December 9 until first week of January 2017 over retirement of ex-Chief Justice of Pakistan, Anwar Zaheer Jamali. Revised bench comprising of Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed and Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan resumed the hearing on January 4.On January 10, in its remarks, the court had branded disqualification of the premier over mere assumptions a dangerous precedent.Justice Ijaz had stated in another hearing on January 12 that the records which the PM had asserted to produce before the court were not filed and that the bench could not decide what was true and what was false without looking at the documents.State institutions were remarked against by the top court on February 21 when the judges declared the authorities concerned to have failed in probing lawmakers who owned shell companies. After a trial that ran for around four months, Supreme Court reserved the verdict on February 23. A supplementary cause list of the top court issued on April 18 reported that the verdict would be let out on April 20, some two months after it was reserved.

Maharaj gets Champions Trophy call-up

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj was on Wednesday included in South Africas squad for the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in England in June.Maharaj, who made a successful debut for South Africa during the recent Test season, is the only player in the 15-man squad who has not played in a one-day international. The same squad will represent South Africa in three one-day internationals against England, starting in Leeds on May 24, ahead of the Champions Trophy. South Africas first match in the ICC event is against Sri Lanka at the Oval on June 3.Fast bowler Morne Morkel returns to the one-day side after an injury-enforced break and will be part of a strong fast bowling attack which also includes Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell, Chris Morris, Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo.Dale Steyn was not considered because he is still recovering from a shoulder injury. But Steyn was included in a South Africa A squad which will play two four-day county matches and a four-day match against England Lions in June. With South Africa playing an away Test series against England in July and August, the A tour will give Steyn a chance to make a claim to regain his place in the Test squad. The South Africa A squad will be captained by former South Africa Under 19 captain Aiden Markram, 22, who will be a candidate for an opening batsman berth in the Test series. The A team includes current or recent Test squad members in Theunis de Bruyn, Temba Bavuma, Dwaine Pretorius, Heinrich Klaasen and Dane Piedt.Selection convener Linda Zondi said he believed South Africa had picked a squad for all likely conditions during the Champions Trophy. He said of Maharaj: Keshav has had an exceptional debut season for the Test side and his inclusion gives us a spinner with different skills and extra batting depth. The inclusion of orthodox spinner Maharaj meant there was no place for left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who was part of a squad which won a one-day series in New Zealand recently.South African one-day squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock (wkt), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada.

Trump would be 'honored' to meet pope during Italy trip: White House

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The White House raised the possibility Wednesday of Donald Trump meeting Pope Francis during the US presidents trip to Italy in late May, although it stressed nothing has been scheduled. We will be reaching out to the Vatican to see if an audience with the pope can be accommodated, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said. We would be honored to have an audience with his holiness.Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said Pope Francis would welcome a request for an audience and do his best to ensure it happened. As of the end of last week we had not had an official request for an audience but for sure we would welcome it, Burke told AFP, adding that he did not anticipate any scheduling clashes which could prevent a meeting taking place around the dates Trump is due to be in Italy.Trump is scheduled to participate in the G7 summit of leaders on May 26-27 in Taormina, Sicily. Prior to that, he is expected to attend a NATO summit in Brussels.World leaders normally give the Vatican at least several months notice of requests for a papal audience, which are almost invariably granted if logistically possible. In Trumps case, the request will be coming in barely a month before he is due in Sicily for the G7 summit and after months of will-he, wont-he speculation about a possible meeting centered on the two mens very different world views. While campaigning in February 2016 to become the Republican Partys nominee for the White House, Trump and the pontiff had a heated and extraordinary exchange through the media.Anyone, whoever he is, who only wants to build walls and not bridges is not a Christian, Pope Francis told journalists, responding to a question about the real estate moguls anti-immigrant stance.Trump retorted: For a religious leader to question a persons faith is disgraceful.Trump later softened his tone, saying the pope was misinformed, unaware of the impact of the drugs coming into the United States and a range of security issues that made it necessary to build a wall along the southern US border. On a visit to Mexico in February 2016 Francis held an open-air mass on the US-Mexico border, where he described forced migration as a human tragedy. When he was sworn in as president on January 20, Pope Francis offered his cordial good wishes and hoped that Trump would be granted wisdom and strength in the exercise of his office. But he also implored the former reality TV star to continue to help those who suffer the most -- the poor, the outcast and those in need who, like Lazarus, stand before our door.
