India keep Champions Trophy squad on hold

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India are refusing to unveil their squad for the Champions Trophy amid speculation they might pull out because of a row with the sports governing body over revenue sharing. The powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already missed the agreed April 25 deadline for naming their squad for the eight-nation event beginning in England and Wales on June 1.The other seven nations have named their squads but India are unlikely to face any sanction from the International Cricket Council (ICC) under the rules of the 50-over tournament.Indias reluctance stems from their long-running opposition to changes in the financial and governance structure of the ICC which would reduce their influence and earnings along with the other members of the so-called big three Australia and England. The ICC board meeting in Dubai on Wednesday voted in favour of the new financial model despite the BCCI -- the worlds richest cricket board -- voting against. The board also voted in favour of a new constitution which will now be put before the ICC Full Council for approval. The dispute has raised speculation in India that the cricket-mad nation could pull out the 50-over Champions Trophy tournament, an event they won in 2013, an option the BCCI was not ruling out.It is too early to make predictions since the event is more than a month away, but nothing can be ruled out. Lets wait and watch, a BCCI board official told AFP Thursday on condition of anonymity. We can still name the team, say even in a week or two, as we have a squad in mind and its just about putting a seal on it. And I am sure it will be accepted by the ICC.Under the ICC shake-up, India stands to earn $277 million less in revenue over the next eight years, the global cricket board said in a statement.

Canada, Mexico win NAFTA breathing space

Posted:

OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada and Mexico got a reprieve in their tough trade relationship with Donald Trump after the US president walked back his threat to jettison the NAFTA continental trade pact Thursday. After speaking by telephone with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts a day earlier, Trump announced that the North American Free Trade Agreement would instead be renegotiated. He still left open the possibility of withdrawing from the pact, however, if talks fail. Were going to give renegotiation a good, strong shot, Trump said Thursday morning from the Oval Office, while adding that If Im unable to make a fair deal for the United States, meaning a fair deal for our workers and our companies, I will terminate NAFTA.Trumps unrelenting back-and-forth has kept Washingtons two closest trade partners on edge as they move to revamp one of the worlds biggest trading blocs. The Republican billionaire had threatened to scrap NAFTA altogether during his presidential campaign, and has kept his partners guessing about his intentions ever since. While most of his fire has been directed at Mexico, Trump abruptly shifted course this week to pick fights with Ottawa over softwood lumber and dairy products.US media reported on Wednesday that he was likely to give formal notice of pulling the United States out of NAFTA -- and then came the White House announcement that the US would renegotiate the agreement after all.In Mexico, Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray warned Thursday that the end of NAFTA was a real possibility.Weve confirmed it was something under consideration, he told Mexicos Radio Formula.Behind the scenes, politicians, diplomats and business groups have put pressure on Washington not to scrap the accord that created one of the worlds largest trading blocs.Twice over a 24-hour period, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reached out to Trump by telephone to extoll the virtues of NAFTA and warn that its demise would lead to massive job losses in both countries.- A fixture since 1994 -========================NAFTA has been a fixture in US relations with its two neighbors since it went into effect January 1, 1994 under president Bill Clinton. It removed tariffs and allows a free flow of goods between the United States, Canada and Mexico.Trudeau has repeatedly said he was open to renegotiating the pact, while reminding lawmakers in Washington that more than half of US states rely on free trade with Canada -- notably in the automotive and agricultural sectors.I highlighted that whether or not there was a better deal to come, there were an awful lot of jobs, an awful lot of industries right now that have been developed under NAFTA, Trudeau said Thursday of his call with Trump. And a disruption like canceling NAFTA would cause a lot of short and medium term pain for an awful lot of families, he added.Every minute more than one million dollars in goods cross the Canada-US border.US cereal producers, meanwhile, said they were shocked and very worried about the fate of NAFTA.- Market shudder -==================North of the border, Maude Barlow, president of the Council of Canadians, a leftist think tank, noted that Canada has its own grievances with its US neighbor and that it was time for Trudeau to stand up for Canadian interests.Business groups have been equally vocal after the Trump administration earlier this week slapped tariffs on some imports of Canadian timber and threated to retaliate against Canadian pricing moves to effectively limit access to its dairy market. (Neither timber, nor milk are covered under NAFTA).Analysts said renegotiating NAFTA is the lesser evil for Trump. Reports that Trump was considering an executive order to withdraw the US from the pact sent a shudder through the markets, National Bank analyst Angelo Katsoras said in a research note.A move to do so, he added, would elicit an uproar in Congress, risk disrupting the activities of companies with supply chains spread across the hemisphere, hurt the economy and trigger a wave of lawsuits.

Facebook steps up fight on state-led propaganda

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Facebook said Thursday it is stepping up its security to counter efforts by governments and others to spread misinformation or manipulate discussions for political reasons. The new effort expands Facebooks security efforts beyond abusive actions such as hacking and financial scams to more subtle and insidious forms of misuse, including attempts to manipulate civic discourse and deceive people, according to a white paper released by the worlds leading social network. The initiative is part of Facebooks efforts to counter fake news but goes beyond that to tackle efforts by governments and non-state entities to use the social network to manipulate public opinion. With the new effort, Facebook will be using its security team to take aim at so-called information operations that aim to distort domestic or foreign political sentiment, the document said.Facebook said it will focus on three areas in this drive: targeted data collection by governments to locate and counter dissidents; content creation or fake news spread via the social network; and false amplification, or using artificial means or automated bots to promote or denigrate a group or cause.Facebook, which came under criticism for its role in the spread of misinformation during the 2016 US presidential campaign, has argued the platform did not play a major role in influencing voters. But in Thursdays white paper, Facebook said it responded to several situations that we assessed to fit the pattern of information operations. We have no evidence of any Facebook accounts being compromised as part of this activity, but, nonetheless, we detected and monitored these efforts in order to protect the authentic connections that define our platform, the report said.Facebook said it is not in a position to make definitive attribution to the actors sponsoring this activity but added that its data does not contradict the conclusions of US intelligence in January that Russia sought to influence the election outcome.Separately, Facebook released its global transparence report showing government requests for account data increased by nine percent in the second half of 2016 from 59,229 to 64,279 requests.About half of the data requests from law enforcement in the US contained a non-disclosure order that prohibited Facebook from notifying the user, it said.

Israeli missile shoots down 'target' over Golan: army

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel shot down what it identified only as a target over the occupied Golan Heights on Thursday, hours after Syria accused it of hitting a military position near Damascus airport. The Patriot Aerial Defence System intercepted a target above the Golan Heights, the official Israeli army Twitter account said, without elaborating.A military spokeswoman refused to comment on Israeli media reports that the object was a drone.Syrias state news agency SANA said earlier that several Israeli missiles hit near Damascus airport at dawn.Israel has not confirmed or denied the reported Damascus attack. But Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz said it was consistent with Israels policy to prevent arms transfers through to Hezbollah, while stopping short of confirming his country was behind the incident. We are acting to prevent the transfer of sophisticated weapons from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon by Iran, Katz told army radio. When we receive serious information about the intention to transfer weapons to Hezbollah, we will act. This incident is totally consistent with this policy. In Moscow, the Kremlin called for restraint and the foreign ministry condemned the attack.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not say if Israel had warned Moscow of the strike, saying only that their defence ministries are in constant dialogue. In Moscow, visiting Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu that the Jewish state would not allow concentration of Iranian or Hezbollah forces on the Golan border, Liebermans office said.Israel has conducted multiple air strikes in Syria since that countrys civil war erupted in 2011, most of which it has said targeted arms convoys or warehouses of its Lebanese arch-foe Hezbollah, which is a key supporter of the Syrian regime.Last month, it said it had carried out several strikes near the Syrian desert city of Palmyra, targeting what it said were advanced weapons belonging to Hezbollah. The strikes prompted Syria to launch ground-to-air missiles, one of which was intercepted over Israeli territory in the most serious flare-up between the two neighbours since the Syrian civil war began six years ago.Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.Around 510 square kilometres of the Golan are under Syrian control. The two countries are still technically at war, although the border remained largely quiet for decades until 2011, when the Syrian conflict broke out.
