Liverpool beaten 1-0 by Southampton in EFL Cup semifinal first leg

Posted:

SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Southampton edged one step closer to the League Cup final as Nathan Redmonds cool finish secured a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the semi-final first leg on Wednesday.Claude Puels side went in front through Redmonds first half strike at St Marys and only a strong display from Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius prevented Southampton from winning by more.Southampton havent reached the League Cup final since 1979 when they were beaten by Nottingham Forest. But by ending a run of four games without a win in all competitions they are now within touching distance of facing Manchester United or Hull at Wembley. We are deserving this result with all the many chances we had. It was important to win with the clean sheet, Puel said.Liverpool had just the one chance. We were unlucky at the end because we know the second leg will be very difficult. With United having won the first leg against Hull 2-0, Liverpool would love to face their old rivals at Wembley, especially after losing to Manchester City on penalties in last seasons final. But Jurgen Klopps team, without a win in their last three games, will need to improve significantly to overturn the deficit at Anfield in the second leg on January 25.After the goal we conceded our reaction was not good. We were not compact enough, Klopp said.Loris Karius had to save our life. Its a deserved win for Southampton but its only half-time in the tie.Klopp had fielded the youngest team in Liverpools history for Sundays embarrassing FA Cup draw against fourth-tier Plymouth at Anfield, but his senior stars fared no better on their return to the line-up.With Senegal winger Sadio Mane away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Daniel Sturridge started in attack as Klopp made eight changes.Klopps team had routed Southampton 6-1 in the League Cup quarter-finals last season and, with the hosts missing dropped captain Jose Fonte, a lively start suggested another emphatic display was possible.Former Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne had Liverpools first effort when his goalbound strike was blocked by Steven Davis.Roberto Firmino had an even better chance when Adam Lallana knocked a high ball down for the Brazil forward, but his powerful shot was close enough to Fraser Forster for the goalkeeper to tip over. But Liverpools aggressive intent was undermined by their lack of focus at the back and Redmond, in yards of space at the far post, drew a fine stop from Karius in Southamptons first incisive attack.Puels side werent to be denied for long and in the 20th minute a woeful miskick from Reds defender Ragnar Klavan allowed Jay Rodriguez to thread a pass to Redmond, who advanced into the penalty area before slotting into the far corner for his first goal since October.Despite dominating possession for much of the first half, Liverpool were toothless in attack and the eight-time League Cup winners almost fell further behind in the 43rd minute.Once again it was slack Liverpool defending that let in the hosts, with Dusan Tadic gifted time and space for a low cross to Redmond, who should have done better than blast straight at Karius from close-range.By the time Lallana snatched at a half-chance early in the second half, Klopp had seen enough and he sent on Brazil forward Philippe Coutinho for his first appearance following a seven-week absence with an ankle injury.Yet, with Coutinho showing a few signs of rust on his return, Liverpool still lacked a cutting edge.Coutinhos presence couldnt cure Liverpools defensive failings in any case and when no-one tracked Cedrics run into the penalty area the visitors were fortunate Southamptons right-back shot hurriedly into the side-netting.Redmond almost doubled Southamptons lead in the closing moments, but his lobbed effort hit the bar and was cleared by Lallana.

Messi free-kick magic sends Barca into Copa Del Rey quarters

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Lionel Messis third goal from a free-kick in as many games this year secured Barcelonas place in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey as the holders beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 to edge through 4-3 on aggregate on Wednesday.Luis Suarezs 100th Barca goal and Neymars penalty cancelled out Athletics 2-1 first leg lead, but Enric Saborits header six minutes into the second-half had the tie headed for extra time. However, just as in the first leg and in a 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Sunday, Messi rode to Barcas rescue with another exquisite free-kick that clipped the inside of the post on its way past Gorka Iraizoz. There is a reason why Messi is the best in the world, Suarez told Barca TV. He surprises you with something beautiful in every game.Barca were under huge pressure to deliver their first win of the year as the slip-up at Villarreal left them five points adrift of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, who also have a game in hand.It is important for our confidence. We wanted and needed a result like that, added Suarez. We are calm, working hard and know that the results will come. The build-up to the game had been dominated by talk of controversial refereeing calls in the first leg as Athletic ended the game with nine men, whilst Barca had a stonewall penalty claim waived away. And there was more controversy on 26 minutes when Neymar was wrongly flagged offside as he set up Suarez for a tap in.However, the same combination wasnt to be denied 10 minutes before half-time when Neymars cross was hammered into the far corner by Suarez to bring up his Barca century. The important thing is it contributed to us going through, which is what we wanted, said Suarez. The former Liverpool mans strike was also the 300th goal scored by Barcas fearsome MSN forward line since he joined the club in 2014 with Messi netting 124 and Neymar 76.It was 301 just three minutes into the second-half when Neymar was chopped down by Eneko Boveda.Messi handed Neymar responsibility from the spot and the Brazilian ended a 1,023-minute drought for Barca as he sent Iraizoz the wrong way to register his first goal since October 19.Barcas joy was short-lived, though, as with their first serious attack Athletic got the away goal they needed when Saborits downward header at the back post beat both Jasper Cillessen and Samuel Umtiti on the line. However, Messi proved the match winner 11 minutes from time as he outfoxed Iraizoz. A week after beating the Athletic keeper to his right, the five-time World Player of the Year pulled his free-kick in off Iraizozs left-hand post for his 26th goal in 23 games this season. An incredible individual run by Neymar nearly sealed the tie as he hit the outside of the post moments later, but Barca held on to maintain their record of not being eliminated by anyone other than Real Madrid since 2008.I am very satisfied, said Barca boss Luis Enrique. We controlled the game at every moment.Barcelona will be joined by Real Sociedad, Alcorcon and Alaves in Fridays draw after they also secured their place in the last eight on Wednesday.Atletico Madrid moved into the last eight on Tuesday 4-3 on aggregate despite losing 3-2 at home to Las Palmas.Real Madrid carry a comfortable 3-0 lead into the second leg of their tie away at Sevilla on Thursday.

Cricket: South Africa move on from 'disruption'

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - South African captain Faf du Plessis admitted on Wednesday that Kyle Abbotts Kolpak defection had been a disruption ahead of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka starting at the Wanderers Stadium on Thursday. But, he said, the team had moved on and were fully focused on completing a clean sweep in the series.Abbott had his Cricket South Africa contract cancelled immediately after he revealed during the second Test in Cape Town that he had signed a Kolpak contract with Hampshire, which will rule him out of future matches for South Africa. Its definitely had an effect, said Du Plessis. Its taken a bit of the shine off our Test series win but its time to move on and build a new bowling attack.Du Plessis said South Africa had failed to take an opportunity for a clean sweep in Australia last month. In international cricket you have a lot of tough times. You dont get opportunities like this very often. It is an opportunity to do it now.Du Plessis said left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell would replace Abbott but Du Plessis did not rule out a first cap for Duanne Olivier, 24, in an all-seam attack. Its the first time Ive seen him bowl but theres something there, he said.Du Plessis praised Hashim Amla, who will make his 100th Test appearance on Thursday, and said he was not concerned about the batsmans recent string of low scores. He has been the rock of our batting. Together with Jacques Kallis he has probably been the most consistent player South Africa has ever had.Even when Amla wasnt scoring runs he was an asset to the team, according to Du Plessis. He brings a calmness to the dressing room and adds a lot of value. Hes had two lean periods in his career but we know that a double century is just around the corner.Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews admitted that his team had been humiliated in the first two Tests. We have to look forward. We havent played our best cricket. We need to hit our straps. We have pride at stake.Mathews said Sri Lanka had played good cricket in patches but needed to be more consistent, with the batsmen in particular needing to concentrate for long periods.

Tennis: Top seed Thiem battles past qualifier into Sydney quarters

SYDNEY (AFP) - Austrian top seed Dominic Thiem had a three-set struggle with Portuguese qualifier Gastao Elias before clinching a quarter-final spot at the Sydney International on Wednesday.Thiem, the world number eight, had several chances to put away the plucky 81st-ranked Elias, only to be broken back before he eventually won 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 7-5 in a match that finished at midnight.Thiem will now face Britains number three Daniel Evans in Thursdays quarters.Thats three times Ive played Gastao and each time it has been very close matches, Thiem said.He was running unbelievable with long rallies and Im very happy to be in the quarter-finals.Evans fought back from dropping the opening set to down Spanish eighth seed Marcel Granollers 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.Gilles Muller earlier beat the heat to be one match away from a third straight semi-final appearance at the Sydney International, following a big-serving victory over Australian Matt Barton. The sixth seed from Luxembourg prevailed over Barton 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 as temperatures nudged 42 Celsius (108 Fahrenheit) to reach the quarter-finals.Muller, who lost to Grigor Dimitrov in last years semi-final, will next face Uruguayan second seed Pablo Cuevas, who overcame Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.It was tough today. I think it was good that we both have big serves, there were not many rallies so that helped to get through it. I was happy when it was over, Muller said. The 33-year-old added that he was still struggling with the lingering effects of illness from last weeks Brisbane International, where he lost in the first round to American Jared Donaldson. The result is actually not so bad, the quarter-finals, so I should be happy, he said.I like it here. The courts are quite fast, I enjoy the city. I feel good here. I dont know what it is, but its true my results have been great here over the last three years.German fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber knocked out Australian Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-4 and will face the two-time defending champion Viktor Troicki.Third seed Troicki from Serbia won his 13th consecutive match at the Sydney international with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Italys Paolo Lorenzi.Kohlschreiber needed just 84 minutes to cruise past Thompson, who failed to save a single break point.Spanish fourth seed Pablo Carreno-Busta dropped the first set before overcoming German Mischa Zverev 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.Carreno-Busta will face Andrey Kuznetsov in the last eight after the Russian beat Australian teenager Alex De Minaur on an injury retirement at the start of the second set after winning the opening set 6-2.

Tennis: Five women to watch at the Australian Open

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Defending champion Angelique Kerber and world number two Serena Williams are the top contenders at the Australian Open starting Monday. Here are five women who could challenge them:- Agnieszka Radwanska=====================Radwanska was a semi-finalist in Melbourne last year and has made the last eight in five of the last six years, making her a key threat. Now 27 and ranked three in the world, she is desperate to end her long wait for a first Grand Slam crown and the Australian Open may represent her best opportunity. She won three tournaments last year. Nicknamed The Magician for her seemingly impossible shot-making, the Pole lost in the build-up Shenzhen Open this month in the quarter-finals.- Simona Halep==============The diminutive and aggressive baseliner embarrassingly slumped out in the first round to a qualifier at Melbourne Park last year when seeded two, and will be keen to make amends. It was later revealed the Romanian was struggling with a nose issue and she fought her way back into form to win titles in Madrid, at home in Bucharest, and Montreal in 2016. With Lleyton Hewitts old coach Darren Cahill by her side the athletic Halep, 25, will be confident of getting her season off on the right foot and at least matching her feats in 2014 and 2015, when she made the quarter-finals. Heads into the tournament as the world number four and in search of her first Grand Slam title.- Karolina Pliskova===================The tattooed and tall Pliskova, whose twin sister Kristyna is also on the tennis tour, had a breakthrough season in 2015 when she finished as world number 11, and followed it up last year by making the US Open final where she lost to Angelique Kerber. She is now coached by David Kotyza, who helped guide fellow Czech Petra Kvitova to two Wimbledon titles and has also been working with Caroline Wozniacki. He said this month that Pliskova, 24, had all the attributes to become a Grand Slam champion. She has failed to go past the third round in four previous attempts but has had the perfect preparation by winning the lead-up Brisbane International, which helped her climb the rankings to five.- Dominika Cibulkova====================The tiny Slovak, 27, powered into the 2014 Australian Open final for her best-ever showing at a Grand Slam, losing to Li Na. But she crashed in the first round last year, highlighting her up-and-down career. Undeterred, she bounced back to claim titles at Katowice and Eastbourne before becoming the surprise winner of the end-of-season WTA Finals. It helped propel her to a career-high fifth in the world, although she has since slipped down a notch. It nevertheless makes her a serious contender at Melbourne Park, despite rocky preparations when she was bundled out in both Brisbane and Sydney in round two.- Garbine Muguruza==================Big-hitting Muguruza announced her arrival as a major force with a shock straight-sets victory over Serena Williams in the French Open final last year for her maiden Grand Slam triumph, but consistency has been elusive. Since making waves at the Australian Open in 2014, she has had to grapple with the weight of expectations. Now 23 and ranked seven, she says the challenges of the past years have served her well in managing the pressure heading into 2017. Known for her powerful groundstrokes, the Spaniard will be hoping to do better than the fourth round, which remains her best effort to date in four Melbourne Park appearances.

Tennis: Recharged Bouchard sets up Sydney semi with Konta

SYDNEY (AFP) - Eugenie Bouchard reached her first semi-final for 10 months as she battled intense heat to down higher-ranked Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the Sydney International on Wednesday. The former Wimbledon finalist wore down the 27th-ranked Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-3 in 76 minutes to set up a semi-final with Britains world number 10 Johanna Konta. It will be the 49th-ranked Canadians first WTA Tour semi-final since the Malaysian Open in March last year. Its a good step in the right direction. I know there is a long way to go to achieve what I want, Bouchard said. But to match up against solid players like I have this week, its a very tough tournament here. So Im proud of that, for sure.Bouchard beat Konta in three sets in the second round at last years Wimbledon, but it was a battle.I barely got through the last one. Shes a top-10 player. Shes playing her best tennis right now, Bouchard said of Konta.I know she will be pretty aggressive. She hits a big ball. I will be ready for that and try and play some good tennis. Yeah, just be grateful for another day in Sydney.Konta continued her impressive progress through the Sydney International draw with a 6-3, 7-5 win over rising young Russian Daria Kasatkina, who had eliminated German world number one Angelique Kerber in Tuesdays second round.I played Eugenie last year in Wimbledon, a really, really tough battle, Konta said.I know going into it that its going to be a tough match. She still is one of the best players, and, yeah, its a given that its going to be a tough one.Elsewhere on a stifling day where temperatures topped 42 degrees Celsius (108 Fahrenheit), former world number one Caroline Wozniacki went down in a punishing three hour, 20 minute battle with Barbora Strycova 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4.Both players needed treatment for foot blisters on the broiling Ken Rosewall Arena hardcourt.Strycova in the semis will face the 2013 winner Agnieszka Radwanska, who eliminated Chinese qualifier Duan Yingying 6-3, 6-2 in the evening match.Duan was the first Chinese woman through to the quarter-finals in Sydney since Li Na in 2013.Wozniacki was attempting to end a run of seven Sydney International visits without getting past the quarter-finals.She battled back from 5-2 down in the second set and 5-0 in the tiebreaker but fell in the third set.It was brutal out there, and it was really hot. But you just try and think like youre on a beach drinking pina coladas, Wozniacki said.Thats basically your train of thought. You know that its the same for both players, so I was just trying to mentally just try and keep cool. But it was really, really hot out there.

Football: Barca won't break bank to keep Messi

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona wont put their financial future at risk in negotiating a new contract for Lionel Messi, the club warned on Wednesday, in comments that will encourage his many suitors across Europe.Messi and club captain Andres Iniesta are entering the final 18 months of their current deals at the Camp Nou meaning they would be free to talk to other clubs in a years time if they dont extend their contracts in 2017.Despite posting a record turnover of 679 million euros ($719 million) last season, a series of expensive new contracts for the likes of Neymar and Luis Suarez mean Barcelona are close to overstepping the 70 percent limit of turnover spent on salaries imposed by UEFAs financial fair-play laws.We have to be very strict with the budgets, we cant go crazy, said Barcelona CEO Oscar Grau, confirming that the Catalan giants have no plans to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window. We need to comply with the ratios of debt and the percentage of salaries in the budget.Five-time World Player of the Year Messi, 29, and Iniesta, 32, have been at the club since they were teenagers and have been the cornerstones of the most glorious period in Barcelonas history, each winning eight Spanish league titles and four Champions Leagues. We want the best player in history to remain here at Barcelona and we want to renew the players that have been brought through here. They are the best and they should retire at home, added Grau.We have to analyse it. We are working with common sense and discretion. We want Messi to stay and we will find the way, I am sure. I want to calm all Barcelona members.Any new deal for Messi is likely to see him usurp Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently extended his Real Madrid deal to 2021.The pressure on Barcas salaries is set to be eased when bumper new shirt-sponsorship deals with Japanese retailer Rakuten and kit manufacturer Nike worth an estimated 210 million euros a year kick in from next season and 2018 respectively.Meanwhile, the start date for a major redevelopment of the Camp Nou has been delayed from later this year to July 2018.

Football: Leaving Chelsea for China 'not a step down' - Oscar

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Oscar insisted on Wednesday that quitting the English Premier League to play in China was not a step down -- but admitted that the mind-boggling financial offer was a definite incentive. In his first substantive comments since leaving Chelsea for an eye-catching 60 million euros ($63 million), Oscar said the big-spending Chinese Super League would eventually rival the best leagues in the world.I dont think it is a step down, said Oscar, who is training in Qatar with his new team Shanghai SIPG, who reportedly made the Brazilian international one of the highest-paid players in the world.I think in China they are making a great project for me and all the good players that are coming to the league. I am pretty sure that in the future the Chinese league will be one of the best leagues in the world. The attacking midfielders recent transfer to Shanghai was seen as a potential game-changer for the ambitious Chinese Super League.Among other stars tempted to China in recent weeks have been much-travelled Argentine striker Carlos Tevez, current Belgian international Axel Witsel, and another former Chelsea player in Ricardo Carvalho, who will also line up for Shanghai SIPG.Tevez, 32, will reportedly become the best-paid player in the world with a two-year contract of 38 million euros per season at Shanghai Shenhua. But it was 25-year-old Oscars decision to leave one of Europes top clubs and the current English league leaders while still in his prime that sent a powerful statement of Chinas new-found power in world football. The Brazilian is thought to be on a contract worth 24 million euros a season and has faced accusations that he has gone to play in China only for money.Oscar agreed money played a part, but said that was the case for all his transfers. This happens with every player, if it wasnt for money I wouldnt leave Brazil, he told reporters in Doha. When you go to Europe you go because of the money and because of the good clubs also and in Shanghai the project is to be one of the best leagues.Of course it was also good for me and my family and for everyone involved in the transfer. He added that the surprise move came out of the blue and after talking to his family and agent we accepted immediately. It didnt take long, everybody accepted it was a good deal for all sides, so it was a quick deal.Oscar, who has played 47 times for Brazil, added that moving to China would not affect his international chances, citing the fact that Paulinho also plays in China and for Brazil.I dont think that will be a problem, if I am playing good for my team I will be in the national team without a problem, he said.Chinas President Xi Jinping has outlined a vision for turning his country into one of footballs superpowers. He has also set China a target of hosting and winning a World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo rested again as Zidane targets treble

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane once again left Cristiano Ronaldo out of his squad that travels to Sevilla on Thursday holding a 3-0 lead for the second leg of their Copa del Rey last 16 tie.Madrid made light of Ronaldos absence in the first leg as a double from James Rodriguez and Raphael Varanes header maintained Reals relentless form.Zidanes men are unbeaten in 39 games in all competitions and can set a new Spanish football record should they avoid defeat for a 40th consecutive game at the Sanchez Pizjuan.Having already bagged the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup this season, Zidane admitted a first ever treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League is Reals target for the rest of the campaign, but cautioned there is still a long way to go.The treble is our objective, but it is still far off. What matters most is working day in, day out, said Zidane on Wednesday. The decision to rest Ronaldo once more has been made with one eye on a second trip to the Pizjuan in four days to come in La Liga on Sunday.Sevilla are Reals closest challengers in the league as they sit a point ahead of Barcelona in second, four off Madrid, who also have a game in hand. What Sevilla are doing is phenomenal, added Zidane. They are a strong and quality team. Both games are fundamental for us.Zidane has also rested Luka Modric, whilst Isco and Rodriguez miss out through injury. However, the European champions are boosted by the return of captain Sergio Ramos for the first time this year, whilst Mateo Kovacic and Lucas Vazquez also return from injury.Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli has also prioritised Sundays league meeting as three key players: Mariano, Steven NZonzi and Franco Vazquez have been left out his 18-man squad. However, new signings Clement Lenglet and Steven Jovetic are included and look set to make their debuts.

Manchester City charged over anti-doping procedures

Posted:

LONDON: (AFP) - Manchester City have been charged by the Football Association with breaching its anti-doping procedures, the governing body said on Wednesday. The FA said the issue referred to rules concerning club whereabouts -- English clubs are required to provide the correct details of training sessions, as well as player addresses, so that they are available for drug testing at all times.City would likely face a fine if found guilty rather than a more severe sanction. The charge concerns the club rather than any particular individual and the BBC reported that Citys information was not updated following a change to training routines.Manchester City have been charged in relation to the FAs rules on anti-doping, an FA statement read.It is alleged the club failed to ensure that their Club Whereabouts information was accurate.City have until January 19 to respond to the charge. The matter concerns a breach of FA rules only and is not under the jurisdiction of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which has no provision for team violations in its code, or UK Anti-Doping.City are currently fourth in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Chelsea, and take on Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.Pep Guardiolas side won 5-0 at West Ham in the FA Cup third round on Friday.
