Maid torture case: Additional session judge's wife arrives at SC

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Additional session judge’s wife on Thursday has arrived at Supreme Court (SC) to record statement in Tayyaba torture case.According to details, young maid’s alleged mother has also reached the court.Earlier, new developments in the Tayyaba torture case had revealed that her real name was Sana, daughter of Nawaz. Sana had gone missing in 2014 from her home and then picked up by a group that supplied housemaids in return of money.Kausar Bibi belonging to Moza Karam Kaathia village near Kamalia had claimed to be her mother. In 2014, the girl was sent to the house of a person named Usama Shahzad on Jaranwala Road in Faisalabad in return of a few thousand rupees.According to police sources, Usama Shahzad’s family later shifted the girl to a relative of theirs in Lahore. When the parents of the girl reported to police that she had been kidnapped, police refused to register the case. Upon police’s refusal, Kausar Bibi turned to Lahore High Court and thus a kidnapping case was registered in Faisalabad’s Sadar police station on February 25, 2015 under Section 363.Police told that the relatives of the girl reconciled with the alleged offender in return of Rs 130,000 and stamp papers were formally submitted in the police station. Thus, the case ended on May 20, 2016.On the other hand, Islamabad High Court (IHC) registrar has submitted the report on the subject before Supreme Court. Social workers have also filed petitions in the court.

US spy chiefs stand firm on Russia findings

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US spy chiefs insisted Thursday they have strong evidence that Russia mounted an unprecedented bid to disrupt the American election, standing firm in the face of Donald Trumps refusal to accept their conclusions. One day before the heads of four top intelligence bodies brief the president-elect on their assessment of Russian meddling in last years race, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told a Senate hearing he had very high confidence in their findings. The Russians have a long history of interfering in elections, theirs and other peoples, he told the Armed Services Committee. But we have never encountered such a direct campaign to interfere with the election process as we have seen in this case. This was a multifaceted campaign. So the hacking was only one part of it, and it also entailed classical propaganda, disinformation, fake news.Clapper, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Marcel Lettre, undersecretary of defense for intelligence, told the committee in a joint statement that only Russias senior-most officials could have authorized the operation, in which hackers stole Democratic Party files and emails, which were then disseminated via WikiLeaks, embarrassing the party and harming losing candidate Hillary Clintons White House effort.Russia has clearly assumed an even more aggressive cyber posture by increasing cyber espionage operations, leaking data stolen from these operations and targeting critical infrastructure systems, Clapper said.Trump, who has pledged a rapprochement with President Vladimir Putins Russia after taking office on January 20, has repeatedly dismissed that finding. The Republican has mocked via Twitter past intelligence errors of the CIA, FBI and other agencies, challenging them to prove that the hacking and leaks could be traced up to the top of Putins government. As Trump first raised doubts early last month, President Barack Obama ordered the intelligence community to produce a comprehensive report on cyberattacks and Russian interference in the election.Obama was briefed on the report Thursday, and Clapper, Rogers, Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey and Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan are expected to detail it to Trump on Friday. An unclassified version stripped of sensitive details will be released to the public early next week.I think the public should know as much about this as possible, Clapper said.Nevertheless, Thursdays much-anticipated hearing did not offer any new evidence to back the allegations. When asked by senators to provide more proof, Clapper repeatedly said he could not do so in public, saying it risked damaging the intelligence communitys sources and operations. We have invested billions, and we have put peoples lives at a risk to glean such information, he said.Fridays briefing for Trump will come amid worries he has already soured relations with key parts of the all-important national security establishment. In addition to casting doubts on their conclusions over Russian interference, Trump raised more hackles on Wednesday by citing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to suggest that anyone, even a 14-year-old child, could have been behind the hacking.Under strong criticism from politicians of both parties for placing more credibility in Assange than the CIA and FBI, Trump defended himself Thursday. The media lies to make it look like I am against Intelligence when in fact I am a big fan Trump said on Twitter. The dishonest media likes saying that I am in Agreement with Julian Assange - wrong. I simply state what he states, it is for the people...to make up their own minds as to the truth.Without naming Trump, Clapper said there was a difference between healthy skepticism and disparagement of the intelligence community. And Ive received many expressions of concern from foreign counterparts about, you know, the disparagement of the US intelligence community, he said.Public trust and confidence in the intelligence community is crucial, he said.Asked about Assanges credibility, Clapper said his publication of leaked materials had put people at risk.I dont think those of us in the intelligence committee have a whole lot of respect for him, Clapper said.

Four Yemenis freed from Guantanamo arrive in Saudi Arabia

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Four Yemenis released from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay arrived Thursday in Saudi Arabia where they had a tearful reunion with relatives, after the White House rejected a freeze on transfers. The four were among 59 prisoners who were still being held in the detention centre in Cuba.In the Saudi capital, an AFP reporter saw the four prisoners after they landed at a terminal normally reserved for royals at the Riyadh international airport.Prisoners and family members wept as they saw each other for the first time in years. One of the released inmates, Salim Ahmed bin Kanad, told reporters he felt born again after seeing his relatives.Another, Mohammed Bawazir, said he hoped to move on and forget the past.I want to give back to my family the 15 years I lost, he said.Officials identified the other former prisoners as Mohammed Rajab Abu Ghanim and Abdullah Yahya al-Shalabi.On Tuesday, US President-elect Donald Trump tweeted: There should be no further releases from Gitmo. These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield.Hours later, outgoing President Barack Obamas spokesman, Josh Earnest, said he would expect additional transfers before Obama hands power to Trump on January 20.Saudi King Salman has said the four Yemenis who arrived Thursday will live in the kingdom, where they will take part in a rehabilitation and de-radicalisation programme, the interior ministry said in a statement. The bearded ex-prisoners appeared healthy and were all dressed in two-piece Pakistani-style tunics. One prisoner was welcomed by 21 relatives, including children, but only a handful greeted the others.A lone woman waited for one of the inmates.Reporters were kept in the terminal and could not see what type of aircraft had transported them.Obama came to office eight years ago vowing to shutter the Guantanamo facility because, he said, detention without trial did not reflect American values. But he has run up against political and legal hurdles, Pentagon foot-dragging and stubborn Republican opposition in Congress. With Guantanamos closure blocked, Obamas White House has focused on whittling down the number of inmates. Before Thursdays transfer, around 20 of the remaining prisoners had been cleared for removal. But finding countries to take them has often proven time-consuming.Only a handful of those who remain have started moving through military tribunals, including the alleged plotters of the 9/11 attacks. Many of the others are in legal limbo -- not charged but deemed too dangerous to release.Fifteen of the 19 Al-Qaeda hijackers who carried out the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001 were Saudi. But Riyadh denies any ties to the plotters who killed nearly 3,000 people. In recent months, Obama has authorised a flurry of transfers of prisoners to other countries including Yemen and Saudi Arabia -- prompting outrage from Republicans each time.In April, nine Yemeni inmates were transferred from Guantanamo Bay to Saudi Arabia, the first time the kingdom received any inmates from the facility. The move followed years of negotiations with the Saudi government. Yemens civil war meant those inmates could not be sent to their home country.Because the Guantanamo Bay naval base is on Cuban and not US soil, it is not subject to the same federal laws and legal processes as the United States.Obamas predecessor George W. Bush released or transferred around 500 inmates before leaving office. Obama had released or transferred more than 180.

Al-Qaeda chief denounces Islamic State 'liars'

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has denounced what he said was a dishonest propaganda campaign by rival jihadist group the Islamic State against his organization, in an audio message released Thursday. In the message found and translated by US-based watchdog the SITE Intelligence Group, the Egyptian extremist accuses IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of slandering his group.Al-Qaeda, founded by the late Osama Bin Laden, is locked in a battle with the so-called Islamic State -- which sprang from its Iraqi faction -- for the leadership of a global jihad. In his message, the 65-year-old Zawahiri complained that Al-Baghdadi had alleged that Al-Qaeda opposes sectarian attacks on Shiites and was prepared to work with Christian leaders. The liars insist upon their falsehood, to the extent that they claimed we do not denounce Shiites, Zawahiri said, according to the translation of the message, which was released by Al-Qaedas media arm.Zawahiri denied he had said that Christians could be partners in the governance of a future Islamic caliphate, having only said that they could go about their affairs within it. What I have said is that they are partners in the land, such as agriculture, trade, and money, and we keep their privacy in it, in accordance with the laws of our Sharia, he said. And he insisted he had not called for Shiite Muslims to be spared, but had suggested focusing attacks on Shiite-led Iraqi forces and not on random atrocities against civilians.I had told them several times to stop explosions in markets, husseiniyats and mosques, and to concentrate on military, security and police forces and Shiite militiamen, he said.A husseiniyat is a Shiite place of worship and the Iraqi security forces, in their battle against the Islamic State group, are backed by Shiite religious militias. The Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda have both carried out hundreds of attacks on civilian targets, but some Al-Qaeda propaganda has called for less indiscriminate tactics.Zawahiri also denied Al-Baghdadis charge that Al-Qaeda had supported ousted former Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist who attempted to rule through the ballot box.The Al-Qaeda leader, who took charge after Bin Laden was killed by US commandos in 2011, is thought to be somewhere in Pakistans unruly border region hiding from a global manhunt. He communicates with the groups remaining supporters through semi-regular video lectures, reiterating -- as in his latest message -- the need to target the United States. But Thursdays message did not include any footage of Zawahiri speaking. The audio message restated the urgency of this goal -- Tell America, to other than Allah we do not kneel -- but also argued for a dialogue on tactics with other jihadists. We are not infallible, but we are human beings and we hit and we miss. We must listen to advice, he admitted, while rejecting Al-Baghdadis criticism. What we want is to manage a conversation between those who are working for Islam -- and the people of jihad at their forefront -- around the best method and wisest techniques to bring victory to the religion, he said, according to SITE.

Tennis: Murray, Djokovic through to Qatar semi-finals

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic remain on collision course for their first major meeting of the season after both won through to the Qatar Open semi-finals on Thursday. In blustery, chilly conditions, world number one Murray overcame the stiffest test, beating Spains Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 in a hard-fought contest, to secure a 27th consecutive victory.Djokovic, the world number two, eased through to the last four, beating evergreen veteran Radek Stepanek in a far more straightforward match, 6-3, 6-3.The best two players in the world are now favourites to clash in Saturdays final, but it is by no means certain and this was the second time this week Murray was stretched, following a tough victory in the last round against Austrias Gerald Melzer. On Thursday, Murray made 18 unforced errors before finally triumphing against the world number 44 from Spain. He lost his first service game of the match and was visibly irritated about the quality of his tennis on a number of occasions.Murray broke back in the eighth game of the opening set before securing it on a tie-break.But his troubles were far from over.Increasingly agitated and error-prone on court, he made the decisive break of serve in the 11th game of the second set after first squandering three break points. But serving for the match he first had to save two break points, which summed up the Scotsmans evening.Very tough match, very close both sets, said Murray who has won 55 sets to just six dropped in his winning run on the ATP Tour.It was hard conditions today, very windy, hard to get into a rhythm. The victory means Murray now stands just five behind Rafael Nadals mark of 32 consecutive tour victories. Djokovic holds the all-time record of 43 wins in a row set between 2010 and 2011.Murray will meet Tomas Berdych on Friday. The Czech beat Frances Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.Djokovic saw off Stepanek with ease to deny his Czech opponent the chance to make history. If the 38-year-old Stepanek had beaten the Serb, he would have become the oldest player to qualify for an ATP semi-final in almost 25 years, since a 40-year-old Jimmy Connors reached the last four in San Francisco in 1993.Its exciting, you obviously want to start the year off in the best possible way, thats three wins out of three, said Djokovic immediately afterwards. The victory secured a 12th straight win for the Serb against Stepanek and extended his set-winning streak in Qatar to 16.Djokovic won last years title without dropping a set, and he is yet to do so this year.He will next meet Spains Fernando Verdasco who won through easily 6-2, 7-5, against another veteran, Ivo Karlovic, the last man to beat Djokovic in Doha, back in 2015.Djokovic and Verdasco met in last years tournament, with the former number one dropping just four games.

Football: Barca start 2017 with defeat at nine-man Bilbao

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Athletic Bilbao held out with nine men to secure a first win over Barcelona in four years and carry a 2-1 lead into the second leg of their Copa del Rey last 16 tie on January 11.Two goals in three first-half minutes from Aritz Aduriz and Inaki Williams put the hosts in command.Lionel Messis fine free-kick halved Barcas arrears after the break. And the five-time World Player of the Year was inches away from a precious second away goal when he hit the post with the final kick of the game after Raul Garcia and Ander Iturraspe had been sent-off.We struggled at the start, admitted Barca boss Luis Enrique. They used two counter-attacks to put together two good moves and get ahead. In the second-half we concentrated more on what we could control, our play, and I think we did enough to deserve more, even taking into account Athletics numerical disadvantage. Enrique started all three of his star strike force of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar despite handing them an extended winter break which meant they only returned to training on Monday after two weeks off. This is the sixth time Barca and Athletic have been paired together in the Cup in nine seasons, including three finals.Barca have emerged victorious in all five previous occasions, but Athletic looked well on their way to reversing that run with two excellent goals midway through the first-half.Firstly, Aduriz stooped unmarked to head home Garcias cross and round off a fine team move on 25 minutes. Then, in the midst of a homage to Athletic defender Yeray Alvarez who was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer, the hosts struck again when Williams smashed home a volley from Adurizs neat backheeled layoff.Alvarez was in the crowd and the club announced earlier on Thursday he will return to training in the next few weeks after undergoing successful surgery.I think in the first-half we were much better than them, Williams told GolTV.The referee left us with nine men, but that is football and we have to suffer. We will go to the Camp Nou and do our best to reach the next round. The match was then dogged by refereeing controversy as Aduriz escaped unpunished for an elbow on Samuel Umtiti.Barca were even more incensed in first-half stoppage time when David Fernandez Borbalan somehow failed to point to the spot when Neymar was chopped down by Borja Etxeita.Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba were all booked for taking their protests too far, whilst Messi also had to be restrained from confronting Borbalan as the players left the field for half-time.The first-half ended in the worst way with a lot of cards on our part and the players upset at what we saw on the field, added Enrique.Borbalan did come to Barcas aid just after the break, though, when he adjudged Messis free-kick to have crossed the line despite Gorka Iraizozs best efforts in the Athletic goal.Iraizoz tipped over a dangerously dipping effort from Neymar as the pressure from the visitors built and the home side were reduced to nine men in their efforts to halt the Brazilian.Garcia and then Iturraspe had few complaints after seeing second yellow cards for late challenges on Neymar.More Messi magic nearly prevented Barca starting the year with defeat as he danced past two defenders before a desperate saving challenge from Mikel San Jose prevented the Argentine getting a shot off.And in the dying seconds Messi smashed a loose ball inside the area off the inside of the post.No side other than Real Madrid has eliminated Barca from the Cup since 2008 and the holders will remain confident of turning the tie around on home soil on Wednesday.

Golf: Win-hungry Tiger adds Dubai to growing event list

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - Tiger Woods added the Dubai Desert Classic to his growing list of 2017 tournaments on Thursday, giving him four events in five weeks in a golf fitness test well ahead of Aprils Masters.Woods, a 14-time major champion, last month returned from a 16-month layoff following back surgery. The former world number one confirmed in a blog posting on his website that he would play February 2-5 in the United Arab Emirates at an event he won in 2006 and 2008.The move came a day after announcing he would play the week before at the PGA event at Torrey Pines, which he has won seven times. He has also scheduled starts February 16-19 at Riviera and the following week at the Honda Classic near his South Florida home.I am working hard to sharpen my game for 2017 and my goal is simple: to win, Woods said. Winning takes care of itself.Woods, ranked 321st, probably would not qualify for the World Golf Championships event the following week in Mexico, an event held at Doral in past years. That would leave his last likely tuneup for the years first major, the Masters on April 6-9 at Augusta National, as the Arnold Palmer Invitational three weeks ahead of the battle for the green jacket. Woods has won eight times at the Bay Hill event.Woods has not won a major since the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines and has not won any event since the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013.In his return event, Woods fired a four-under-par 284 to finish 15th in the 18-man Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. A second-round 65 and flashes of the form that made him a superstar added to the drama of his comeback but a closing 76 showed he needed more consistency in his ball striking. What I did at the Hero World Challenge was a positive step, Woods said. I just need to keep building off that and eliminate the simple mistakes I made.My good stuff was really good, which is a great sign.Woods said he has worked harder than ever before to make his lastest comeback after failed returns from prior nagging leg, knee and back injuries. My love for the game never left. Its just that the body would not allow me to play, Woods said. Now my body is allowing me to do it again. Combine that with the amount of support I have received from so many people, and the help Ive had from players and friends, and there is great reason for optimism.

Rallying: Dakar claims star duo on only day four

SAN SALVADOR DE JUJUY (AFP) - Defending motorcycle champion Toby Price was forced out of the Dakar Rally on Thursday after breaking his left leg, joining two-time auto winner Nasser Al Attiyah on the sidelines on just the fourth day of racing.Australian rider Price suffered his race-ending injury when he tumbled off his KTM motorbike after 371km of the fourth stage from San Salvador de Jujuy in Argentina to Tupiza in Bolivia as the 9,000km race climbed into the dizzying altitudes of the Andes. The 29-year-old had to be airlifted off the course, which hit 3,000 metres above sea level, to hospital.Earlier in the day, Qatars Al Attiyah, the 2011 and 2015 champion, was forced to pull out after his Toyota lost a wheel on Wednesdays third stage, a setback which left him stranded for over an hour. The 46-year-old had been among the pre-race favourites and was sitting second overall behind Peugeots Sebastien Loeb before Wednesdays action. However, he was down in 25th place overall on Thursday morning, more than two hours off the lead, and did not even start the fourth stage. The damage to his Toyota Hilux is too extensive to be repaired by his team, organisers said.Nine-time world rally champion Loeb also endured a day to forget as he lost the overall lead to French compatriot Cyril Despres, a five-time Dakar motorcycling champion.Despres, also in a Peugeot, claimed his first ever stage win on four wheels when he finished the run to Tupiza in 4hr 22min 55sec.He was 10min 51sec ahead of Finlands Mikko Hirvonen in a Mini and 12min 51sec in front of Toyotas Nani Roma, the 2004 champion.Despres now leads the overall standings by 4min 08sec from defending champion and Peugeot teammate Stephane Peterhansel, who was fourth on Thursday. Hirvonen is third at 5min 04sec.Loeb ended the day in fifth place on the stage, 22min 13sec behind Despres. He is fourth overall, almost seven minutes off the lad.Austrias Matthias Walkner, on a KTM, took victory on the moto stage ahead of Spains overall leader Joan Barreda on a Honda.Walkner finished 2min 2sec ahead of Barreda while French rider Michael Metge on another Honda was third, 3min 18sec behind Walkner. I am happy with my victory today but I just hope Toby is OK, said Walkner.Barreda has a 22min 16sec lead over Chiles Pablo Quintanilla, who is on a Husqvarna, in the overall standings.Today was really difficult, especially the first 70 kilometres, with amazing navigation... at two points I was not really sure, but finally I trusted myself, said Barreda.
