At least 23 killed, scores injured as Indian train derails

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - At least 23 people were killed and around 100 injured after an express train derailed in southeast India Saturday night in the latest disaster to hit one of the worlds largest rail networks.Eight coaches and the engine of the Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar express derailed at 11:00 pm (1730 GMT) near Kuneru railway station in Vizianagram district of Andhra Pradesh state. The death toll has risen to 23. Many people are injured, J. P. Mishra, a spokesman for East Coast Railways told AFP.The injured have been shifted to two nearby hospitals and doctors from railways are attending to them, he said.Officials from the railway and local government were carrying out rescue work and relief trains had been sent to evacuate passengers, he said.He did not immediately give a cause for the derailment or the number of passengers affected. The train was travelling from Jagdalpur city to Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha state, when it came off the track nearly 160 kilometres (100 miles) from Visakhapatnam, the nearest city to the accident site.Thirteen of the trains 22 coaches were unaffected in the incident.Rail traffic on the coast line has been suspended.Indias railway network is still the main form of long-distance travel in the vast country, but it is poorly funded and deadly accidents occur relatively frequently. On Friday 10 coaches of an express train were derailed in western Rajasthan state leaving many passengers with minor injuries. The latest deadly incident comes two months after 146 people were killed when a passenger train was derailed in Kanpur, northern India, in one of the countrys worst rail disasters.Last month two people were killed and dozens injured after another train derailed also near Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh state. In 2014, an express train ploughed into a stationary freight train, also in Uttar Pradesh, killing 26 people.A 2012 government report said almost 15,000 people were killed every year on Indias railways and described the loss of life as an annual massacre.Prime Minister Narendra Modis government has pledged to invest $137 billion over five years to modernise the crumbling railways, making them safer, faster and more efficient. The government has signed numerous deals with private companies to upgrade the ageing network.Japan has agreed to provide $12 billion in soft loans to build Indias first bullet train, though plans remain in their infancy.

Trump to CIA: I am with you 1,000 percent

WASHINGTON, Jan 21, 2017 (AFP) - President Donald Trump told the CIA Saturday it had his full support as he paid a visit to mend fences after publicly rejecting its assessment that Russia tried to help him win the US election.I am with you 1,000 percent, Trump said in a short address to CIA staff after his visit to the agency headquarters in Virginia. In his first full day in office, Trump moved swiftly to confront simmering tensions left by US intelligence findings that Russia interfered in the US election to try to tip the outcome in Trumps favor.I love you, I respect you, he told members of the US intelligence community. Were all on the same wavelength, right? he asked, referring in particular to the fight against the Islamic State group. We have not used the real abilities that we have. Weve been restrained. We have to get rid of ISIS.Mike Pompeo, Trumps pick to lead the CIA, has not yet been confirmed by the US Senate.A 53-year-old Republican lawmaker, Pompeo is considered a foreign policy hawk and was an ardent opponent of former president Barack Obamas administration.Outgoing CIA director John Brennan had stern words for Trump last Sunday, saying he needed to be more disciplined in his public comments.I dont think he has a full appreciation of Russian capabilities, Russias intentions and actions, Brennan said of Trump on Fox News Sunday.Trump, likening US intelligence to Nazis, suggested Brennan himself may have leaked an unsubstantiated report that the Russians had gathered damaging salacious personal information about him.The intelligence agencies had given both Trump and Obama a summary of the dossier, which later was published in full by BuzzFeed.Brennan said the US intelligence chiefs considered it their responsibility to make Trump aware that it was in circulation.

Football: Ramos saves Madrid as fans target Ronaldo

Posted:

MADRID, Jan 21, 2017 (AFP) - Sergio Ramos struck twice to get Real Madrid back to winning ways as the home fans targeted Cristiano Ronaldo in a 2-1 victory over Malaga at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. The European champions 40-game unbeaten run had come to a crashing halt with back-to-back defeats to Sevilla and Celta Vigo in the past week, but after a nervy start skipper Ramos ensured they opened up a four-point gap at the top of the table. The Spanish international opened the scoring with a towering header from a Toni Kroos corner on 35 minutes. And Ramos soon took his career tally to 50 La Liga goals by bundling home another Kroos delivery despite standing in an offside position.Juanpi got Malaga back into the game just after the hour and they could even have snatched a point but for a fine save from Keylor Navas to deny Chory Castro soon after. However, victory came at a cost with Marcelo and Luka Modric limping off injured just four days before Real attempt to overturn a 2-1 Copa del Rey quarter-final first-leg deficit at Celta Vigo.Second-placed Sevilla and Barcelona, a further point adrift in third, can close the gap when they travel to Osasuna and Eibar respectively on Sunday.Whilst Ramos was riding to Reals rescue, off-colour Ronaldo endured another afternoon to forget in front of goal and was even whistled by the Madrid fans early on after a sluggish start to 2017.Ronaldo shot straight at Carlos Kameni with just the Cameroonian to beat and Karim Benzema headed over as Madrid started brightly.Sometimes when you have difficulties you need the fans help and to be behind you, said Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.I am not going to criticise the fans because they pay their money. But with so many games and a lot of injuries, the players need to feel that love sometimes. The coach does too.The hosts suffered their first injury blow when left-back Marcelo limped off with a thigh problem midway through the first half.Malaga nearly compounded that loss when Castros driven effort came back off the post before Ignacio Camacho was also inches away from giving the visitors the lead when his back-post header flew across the Madrid goal.Ramos looked to have settled Reals nerves when he leapt highest to power home Krooss outswinging corner 10 minutes before the break. And eight minutes later Ramos had his eighth goal of the season, albeit in scrappier fashion, as he appeared to be offside when tapping home Krooss low free-kick.Malaga are yet to register a point in three games under new boss Marcelo Romero since former Tottenham Hotspur manager Juande Ramoss surprise December resignation.Yet they didnt let their heads go down and were back in the game 18 minutes into the second half when Juankars initial effort was well saved and Juanpi tucked home the rebound.Seconds later Navas was called into action to prevent Malaga equalising as Castro tore through the Madrid defence and his powerful effort was turned to safety by the Costa Rican. At the other end Kameni nearly gifted Real the breathing space they craved as a harmless backpass rolled under his foot, but he recovered just in time to clear off the line and then deny Ronaldos follow-up effort. And a frustrating afternoon for Ronaldo was rounded off 14 minutes from time when his sweetly struck volley came back off the post before Kameni got down low to again deny the reigning World Player of the Year for a third time.Elsewhere, Valencia further eased their relegation fears by registering a second successive league win for the first time this season in upsetting Villarreal 2-0 at the Ceramic Stadium.Carlos Soler and Santi Mina got the goals before half time as Valencia jumped up to 15th, now seven points clear of the relegation zone.Villarreal remain sixth, but could lose farther ground on the top four with Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad also in action on Sunday.

Football: Rooney salvages point with record-breaking strike

Posted:

STOKE-ON-TRENT, United Kingdom (AFP) - Wayne Rooney fired home a spectacular injury-time equaliser to break Bobby Charltons Manchester United goalscoring record and force a 1-1 draw with Stoke City in Saturdays Premier League clash.Rooney couldnt have chosen a better way to grab his 250th goal for the club from a free-kick with time running out after United had trailed since the early stages to an unfortunate own goal by Juan Mata. While Rooney was delighted with his personal record, the point did little to advance Uniteds title claims as they trail Chelsea by 11 points with the leaders due to play struggling Hull on Sunday.Rooneys strike was appropriately enough witnessed by 1966 World Cup-winning star Charlton sitting in the directors box.It means a hell of a lot, said Rooney. It is a great honour and I am very proud. It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result but in the grand scheme it is huge honour. It is not something I expected when I joined. As I said before, I am proud and I hope there is more to come.United manager Jose Mourinho said the record allowed Rooney to be termed a legend. The record is the record. It is the record of the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in the world, said the Portuguese coach. Before him the record belonged to a legend of English football. Now Wayne becomes a legend of Manchester United.United had gone behind to a lame goal in the 19th minute.Erik Pieters was picked out by Marko Arnautovics astute pass and his low cross was deflected past David De Gea by Mata at his near post. With Marouane Fellaini recalled to the starting line-up, it was clear United would adopt a direct approach and it almost got them straight back into the game when Zlatan Ibrahimovics control in front of goal let him down badly at the crucial moment.Matas afternoon then went from bad to worse when he missed a glaring opportunity to atone for his earlier mishap on the half hour.Paul Pogbas vision picked out Ibrahimovic bursting forward and he laid the equaliser on a plate for the Spaniard with his cross to the far post, but Mata somehow contrived to scoop it over a gaping net from just inside the six-yard box.It was all one-way traffic in the closing stages of the first half as United pressed hard for an equaliser and Stoke were indebted to Lee Grant.First, the keeper reacted smartly to tip over a volley from Fellaini and then from the resulting corner he denied Pogba with another fine save. The pattern of play didnt change after the break, but it wasnt long before Mourinho had seen enough as Rashford was sent on in place of Fellaini.Pieters and Mata were then involved in another incident which resulted in United having furious appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Mark Clattenburg. The Stoke defender got across to block Matas attempt at goal from a Pogba cross, but the ball clearly struck his outstretched arm in doing so.United hung their heads in frustration when Jesse Lingard beat Grant with a long-range effort, but watched as it clipped the bar. However, their persistence eventually got its reward deep into injury time when Rooney struck with his free-kick from wide on the left.

Football: Liverpool stunned by Swansea City at home

Posted:

LIVERPOOL, Jan 21, 2017 (AFP) - Gylfi Sigurdssons decisive goal boosted Swanseas hopes of Premier League survival as they inflicted Liverpools first home defeat for almost a year with a 3-2 triumph at Anfield on Saturday.Iceland international Sigurdsson, who has repeatedly been linked with a move away from the Welsh club, struck with 16 minutes left after Paul Clements side had let a two-goal lead slip against title-chasing Liverpool.Fernando Llorente had scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half for Swansea, but Liverpools Roberto Firmino responded with a double of his own.Swansea showed great spirit to come back and earn both the Welsh clubs first-ever league win at Anfield and their first under Premier League victory under new manager Clement. In doing so, they lifted themselves off the foot of the Premier League table and out of the bottom three, at least for a few hours.Liverpool, playing their eighth match in 25 days, paid for sloppy defending, and missed the chance to put pressure on leaders Chelsea, losing at home for the first time since Stoke won the second leg of a League Cup semi-final at Anfield on January 26 last year.Philippe Coutinho, now fully recovered from injury, made his first league start since November after playing for 65 minutes in Wednesdays FA Cup win at Plymouth, but showed only occasional sparks of creativity during a tepid first half.It was Swansea, for all the pressure they had to absorb, who came closest to scoring before the interval. Midfielder Tom Carroll, signed from Tottenham during the week, ran in from the left on to Sigurdssons pass infield and struck the outside of the near post from a tight angle, via a deflection off Dejan Lovren. Both Carroll and fellow debutant Martin Olsson, brought in from Norwich, performed solidly, with the Swedish full-back making one positive attacking run that ended when he was bodychecked by Ragnar Klavan. One excellent turn from Coutinho just after the half-hour mark allowed him to create a chance for Firmino, who would have scored but for Alfie Mawsons block.Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopps frustration grew as Swansea went ahead with little more than two minutes of the second half played. Not for the first time this season, Liverpool conceded from a set-piece; Sigurdssons corner was headed down by Federico Fernandez, Wayne Routledge blocked off the defender and the ball bounced loose for Llorente to prod in from eight yards.Astonishingly, Llorente scored again from Swanseas next attack, barely four minutes later.Olsson and Carroll combined down the left, and the former Tottenham man crossed for the Spain striker to climb between Lovren and Klavan, planting a downward header past Simon Mignolet.Liverpool, however, pulled a goal back within three minutes.James Milner crossed from the left, the ball drifted over Olsson, and Firmino guided a header into the bottom corner of the net.Swansea continued to threaten but Klopps side equalised with little more than 20 minutes to go courtesy of a superbly constructed goal.Georginio Wijnaldum controlled a pass down the left touchline, and looped in a cross that Firmino gathered on the chest under pressure from two Swansea defenders, before hooking a first-time shot past Lukasz Fabianski.Yet having worked their way back into the match, Liverpool fell behind again amid chaotic defending.Carroll charged into the penalty area after taking on Llorentes pass and, as Klavan slid in to challenge, the ball ran loose for Sigurdsson to steer beyond the exposed Mignolet.Swansea had more nervous moments to come, with Fabianski blocking substitute Divock Origis shot on the turn following a Milner corner, and then watching helplessly as Adam Lallana looped a header against the bar.But the visitors, denied victory by an Everton stoppage-time equaliser on their last visit to Merseyside in November, hung on to all three points.

Tennis: Dimitrov downs Gasquet in early-morning finish

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Grigor Dimitrov played to 2:00am on Sunday as he beat Richard Gasquet to reach the Australian Opens last 16, recalling the tournaments infamous late -- or early -- finishes.Play got underway at two minutes to midnight and Dimitrov took two hours, two minutes to oust Gasquet 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, following Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams into the fourth round. The timing had echoes of the 2008 clash between Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis, which started at 11:47pm and wrapped up at a bleary-eyed 4:34am the following day.In 2012, the mens singles final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal started before 8:00pm and went on for a record five hours and 53 minutes, finishing at 1:40am.Scattered groups of fans at Rod Laver Arena sipped coffee and huddled in towels against the early-hours chill as Dimitrov broke his French opponents serve five times.Lately Ive been struggling with my sleeping so Ive been going to bed so late, so today its 2:00am and Im feeling great, smiled the 15th-seeded Bulgarian. Its going to take a while to fall asleep so I might go and practice again, he joked.Earlier Nadal needed all his trademark grit to grind out a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2 win over 19-year-old Alexander Zverev, widely tipped as a future number one.It means Nadal, 30, joins fellow veteran Roger Federer in the last 16 of a contest missing defending champion Novak Djokovic after his stunning defeat to Denis Istomin.Everybody knows how good Alexander is, said Nadal, who will play Frances Gael Monfils in the fourth round. Hes the future of our sport, and the present.Williams, by contrast, had no such trouble as she brushed off fellow American Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-3 to maintain her charge towards a 23rd Grand Slam title.Williams, back after an injury break at the end of 2016, has been in brilliant form and she will take some stopping as she zeroes in on Steffi Grafs Open-era record. The next player to take on Williams will be Barbora Strycova, who ousted Frances Caroline Garcia to earn a shot at the world number two.Obviously Im here for one reason, said Williams, who again lifted her index finger in celebration at her victory, symbolising the number one.Elsewhere 117th-ranked Istomin built on his win over Djokovic by beating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the last 16 for the first time, where he will play Dimitrov.David Goffin halted towering Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who won a tournament-record 84-game match in the first round, to set up a clash against Austrian eighth seed Dominic Thiem.Roberto Bautista Agut ousted fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 and will next play third seed Milos Raonic, who beat Gilles Simon 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 6-3.In the womens draw, Britains Johanna Konta maintained her sizzling form with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki.Kontas prize is a round-of-16 rematch with Russias Ekaterina Makarova, whom she edged at the same stage last year, going 8-6 in the final set.Makarova, seeded 30, beat sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova in a three-set marathon.Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who hadnt won an Australian Open match since 1998 before this year, extended her fairytale run by beating Greeces Maria Sakkari 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.Next up for the 34-year-old Croatian, who put her career on hold to flee her abusive father, is American qualifier Jennifer Brady, who upset 14th seed Elena Vesnina.Fifth seed Karolina Pliskova survived a scare before beating Latvian teenager Jelena Ostapenko 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 and she will face Australias Daria Gavrilova in the next round.

Tennis: Pliskova survives big scare to stay alive

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Fifth seed Karolina Pliskova survived a huge scare Saturday, scrambling into the Australian Open fourth round after battling from a set down in a marathon match. The Czech, who had dropped only four games in her opening two matches, needed 2hrs 5mins to get past fast-rising Latvian teen Jelena Ostapenko 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 in a seesawing encounter. Her perseverance set her up for a last-16 clash with local hope Daria Gavrilova, who ground her way past 12th-seeded Swiss Timea Bacsinszky in three sets.Whoever gets through that match will play either Croatian veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni or American qualifier Jennifer Brady in the quarter-finals.I think I was a bit lucky in the end, she was the better player, said Pliskova of the 19-year-old.When she was 5-2 up (in the third set) she was missing a little bit more, so I was still staying in the game.I was just trying to put the ball in because she was playing so fast and aggressive, and wait for my chance.Im so happy to be in the fourth round for the first time in my life.It was a fortunate win for Pliskova who was put under the pump by Ostapenko, ranked 38, immediately. The teen only made her Australian Open debut last year, crashing in the first round, a feat she mirrored at the three other Grand Slams. But she wasnt intimidated by a high-ranked opponent and a prime time evening match on Margaret Court Arena, firing a perfect backhand winner to go a break up.Pliskova hit straight back but the towering Czech couldnt keep the momentum going and Ostapenko, against all the odds, took the set.It was a different Pliskova in the second set as she refocused and readjusted her game, finding her range on her booming forehand to race through it to love, full of confidence. But the plucky teen wasnt ready to roll over and followed up a brilliant break with a hold to love and then another break to go 5-2 in front in the third. The frustrated Czech took it out on her racquet, throwing it on the ground to earn a code violation. But getting the frustration out seemed to work and she reeled off four games in a row as the pressure mounted on the Latvian.Ostapenko, a former Wimbledon girls champion who has steadily risen through the rankings, refused to give up, trading blows all the way to 10-8 when she finally succumbed.

Football: Spurs fightback thwarts Guardiola's Man City

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiolas Manchester City were denied a morale-boosting Premier League victory as Tottenham Hotspur came from two goals down to force a contentious 2-2 draw on Saturday.Blunders by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris allowed Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne to give City a deserved 2-0 lead, only for Dele Alli and substitute Son Heung-Min to grab a point for the visitors. The games main talking point occurred shortly before Sons 77th-minute leveller when Kyle Walker got away with a push on City forward Raheem Sterling inside the Spurs box as he took aim at Lloris. But Guardiola said: We lost because we missed a lot of chances. When you score a goal, the referee doesnt matter. It was a deja vu game.City, for whom 27 million pounds ($33 million, 31 million euros) new signing Gabriel Jesus made his debut, remain fifth and will fall 12 points off the pace if leaders Chelsea beat Hull City on Sunday.Spurs stay second, six points below Chelsea, after missing out on a seventh successive league win.But manager Mauricio Pochettino, who played down the extent of a hamstring problem that forced centre-back Toby Alderweireld off in the second half, hailed his sides fightback. They were better in the first half and maybe deserved more. It was lucky for us to be 0-0, he said.We conceded two and it was difficult to come back, but they always believed. That is important. Its a massive point for us.Citys 4-0 defeat at Everton last weekend was the heaviest league reverse of Guardiolas stellar coaching career, but his response was to go on the attack.Centre-back John Stones was dropped again, while De Bruyne and David Silva joined Yaya Toure in an attacking midfield trio that enabled City to pierce holes in Spurs rearguard right from kick-off.After sights of goal for Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero, Lloris turned a low Silva shot behind and then stood motionless as Zabaletas drive from De Bruynes corner skidded inches wide. With Spurs incapable of playing through Citys high press, Kevin Wimmer and Eric Dier were both booked inside the first 13 minutes.By the time De Bruyne rolled a cross-shot across goal and wide after Aguero had robbed Dier, Pochettino had seen enough, moving Dier into midfield and swapping his 3-4-2-1 for a more stable 4-3-2-1.Still City came, with Sane heading wide and Lloris twice thwarting Aguero, springing to his right to catch a header and then getting down at his near post to parry a left-foot drive.Pochettino made another change at the interval, sending on Son for Wimmer, but within nine minutes of kick-off his side were 2-0 down as Lloris unwittingly took centre stage.Flying out to meet De Bruynes 50-yard pass on the edge of his box, Lloris contrived to head the ball against Sane, who had the simple task of tapping into an empty net.If fortune deserted Lloris on that occasion, he only had himself to blame five minutes later as his failure to gather Sterlings cross from the right allowed De Bruyne to bundle in Citys second. It was no more than the hosts deserved, but just four minutes later Spurs hit back, Alli heading in Walkers superb right-wing cross for his eighth goal in seven games.Danny Rose had to produce a brilliant last-gasp tackle to prevent Sterling restoring Citys two-goal cushion before Alderweireld limped off holding the back of his right thigh. Then came the games turning point.Walker pushed Sterling as he raced through, meaning the England forward could only dink a tame shot straight at Lloris, and moments later Harry Kanes flicked lay-off was swept home by Son.Nineteen-year-old Brazil starlet Jesus made his entrance with seven minutes to go, but there would be no late miracle as he headed narrowly over and saw a tap-in ruled out for offside.

LONDON (AFP) - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of London, Paris and other cities across the world chanting dump Trump in solidarity with US protesters, a day after Americas new president was inaugurated. In London, a largely female crowd, which also had many men and children, packed a Trafalgar Square rally in solidarity with women-led demonstrations throughout the United States. Our Rights Are Not For Grabs -- Neither Are We were among the banners held aloft, along with We shall overcomb and Make bigotry wrong again.Hannah Bryant, a 34-year-old museum worker, brought her four-year-old daughter -- both of them wearing the bright pink pussy hats worn by US demonstrators.Ive been teaching her about equality and prejudice, she said. Its a feeling of solidarity -- not in our name, said Jill Pickering, a 56-year-old American student. Im angry -- I didnt vote for Trump.Organisers said 100,000 attended the London march, although there was no independent verification as police do not give an estimate. In Paris, at least 2,000 people gathered near the Eiffel Tower, holding up banners that read liberty, equality, sorority, in a reference to Frances national motto.I am here for women and for all minorities because Trump is a threat to all humanity, said a US national Kendra Wergin, who is in her mid-30s.Andreia Rossi, a 39-year-old Brazilian, told AFP she was taking part because I am a woman, but also because I want to protest against everything Trump represents. She added: Its very dangerous, he has lied to all those who voted for him, and that can happen in France too.Right-wing populists and nationalist groups in France and elsewhere in Europe have been emboldened by Trumps victory as well as by Britains vote last year to leave the European Union. While Trump won 42 percent of the womens vote in the US, many worry that gender rights and other progress on womens health, contraception and abortion could be chipped away.Bridges not wallsIn Barcelona, Rome, Amsterdam and Geneva too, protesters were enraged by Trumps derogatory remarks on women. We are here for women and for human rights, one of a large contingent of American expatriate women told SkyTG24 news channel in Rome. This American says Trump go back to your own planet, read a placard brandished by a protester. We must defend democratic values, said Karen Olson, who organised the Swiss march, as motorists driving by honked their horns in support. When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty, read a banner held up by a Barcelona protester.Make America sane again, read a banner in Amsterdam. In Budapest, up to 400 people gathered in solidarity with the Washington marchers.Bridges not walls, read one of their banners, a reference to Trumps threat to build a wall separating the United States from Mexico to stop migrants from entering the country -- and to have Mexico pay for it.In Berlin, hundreds rallied in front of the US embassy, chanting pro-migrant slogans in a nation that welcomed nearly a million people fleeing war and poverty in 2015.No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here, they cried. In Prague, protest organiser Johanna Nejedlova branded Trumps rhetoric hateful. We want to express our support for values such as democracy, human rights, ecology and womens rights, she said. There were also solidarity marches beyond Europe too, with protests in Johannesburg, South Africa, where marchers held up banners reading Black lives matter and Love trumps hate.Anti-Trump protests also took place in Australia with several thousand marching in Sydney and Melbourne. And in New Zealand, hundreds joined demonstrations in the capital Wellington as well as in Auckland.
