Pakistan 128-5 at lunch, trail Australia by 336

SYDNEY (AFP) - Pakistan were fighting to stave off defeat to Australia on the final day of the third Test in Sydney with five wickets down on Saturday. The tourists, facing their 12th straight Test defeat in Australia, lost four wickets in the first session after resuming at 55 for one.At lunch Pakistan were 128 for five with skipper Misbah-ul-Haq on 18 and Asad Shafiq not out 23.The tourists trailed Australia by 336 runs with two sessions remaining. The highest target successfully chased down in the fourth innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground was Australias 288 for two against South Africa in 2006.Pakistans leading series scorer Azhar Ali lasted just six balls into the final day before he was out in a soft dismissal on his overnight score of 11.Azhar tried to work Josh Hazlewood to the leg-side only to bunt the ball back to the bowler for an easy return catch.Azhar finished as the highest Pakistan runscorer in a series in Australia with 406 at 81.20.Babar Azam followed in Hazlewoods next over, trapped leg before wicket for nine to end a disappointing series with a total of just 68 runs from six innings.Younis Khan missed out on becoming the first Pakistan batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs when he was caught in the deep off spinner Nathan Lyon for 13.Younis, who scored an unbeaten 175 for his 34th Test hundred in the first innings, did not get enough on a Lyon delivery and lobbed to Hazlewood at mid-on. It was a big wicket for Australia following on from the first-over dismissal of Azhar to have Pakistan plunging towards defeat.Nightwatchman Yasir Shahs 93-ball defiance ended a half-hour before lunch when he was snapped up the slips by fielding substitute Jackson Bird off left-arm spinner Steve OKeefe for 13.

Kurdish-Arab forces seize strategic Syria citadel from IS

BEIRUT (AFP) - A US-backed Kurdish-Arab alliance seized Friday an ancient fortress overlooking the Islamic State groups biggest prison near the jihadists Raqa bastion in northern Syria, a monitor and a commander said. The Syrian Democratic Forces, supported by American special forces and international coalition aircraft... took control of the ancient Qalaat Jaabar fortress, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. It said the Islamic-era fortress was captured after fierce fighting with the jihadists.Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said control of the fortress gave the SDF a line of fire on the biggest IS prison in Syria.A Kurdish field commander confirmed that SDF forces had seized Qalaat Jaabar, where the jihadist group was stationed and was using to launch attacks on surrounding villages. The Kurdish-led SDF has been battling since November 5 to oust the jihadists from their self-declared Syria capital of Raqa, 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of the citadel.Qalaat Jaabar sits on the shores of Lake Assad, which was formed by the countrys largest dam at Tabqa on the Euphrates River. The Observatory said IS had moved dozens of prisoners to Raqa city and other parts of the province. The fortress was one of the most important historic Islamic castles in Syria, dating to the Seljuk and Mamluk periods, said Maamoun Abdulkarim, head of Syrias antiquities department. It has 35 bridges, a mosque and used to have a museum with dozens of artefacts. The Euphrates dam sits 500 metres (yards) from the town of Tabqa, a key IS stronghold where many of its most senior commanders are based. The next target will be to seize the city of Tabqa, the SDF commander said. The SDF and IS also fought pitched battles Friday in Al-Suwaidiya village, near Tabqa, the last IS holdout before the dam, said Kurdish authorities and the Observatory. It also reported that coalition aircraft carried out air strikes on targets in the village that killed at least eight people, including women and children.Control of Al-Suwaidiya would allow SDF forces to advance directly on the dam, said Abdel Rahman. In a two-month offensive, the SDF has taken large areas of northern Raqa province. On December 10 it announced the second phase of the operation to oust the jihadists from their Syrian stronghold.

Abbas urges Trump to drop embassy move pledge

BEIT SAHOUR (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Friday warned US President-elect Donald Trump that moving the American embassy to Jerusalem would be crossing a red line and could jeopardise peace prospects.Any statement or position that disrupts or changes the status of Jerusalem is a red line which we will not accept, he said in a speech, a transcript of which was published by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.Trump has said he plans to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a controversial move bitterly opposed by Palestinians as a unilateral action while the status of the city remains contested.Abbas said that if the embassy was moved the peace process in the Middle East, and even peace in the world, will be in severe trouble. He called on Trump to visit the Palestinian territories. The Palestinians regard Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, while Israel proclaims the entire city as its undivided capital. The United States and most UN member states do not recognise Jerusalem as Israels capital, and the citys status is one of the thorniest issues of the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Trump has said he will move the embassy to Jerusalem and has nominated David Friedman, a bankruptcy attorney, as his ambassador.Friedman supports settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, characterised by successive US administrations as an obstacle to peace. In a Trump transition team statement last month, Friedman said he wanted to work for peace and looked forward to doing this from the US embassy in Israels eternal capital, Jerusalem.Trump spokeswoman Kellyanne Conway said last month told a radio channel moving the embassy was a very big priority for Trump.Israel captured Arab east Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of 1967 and subsequently annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.Previous presidents, including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, reneged on election commitments to move the embassy.

SpaceX set to launch again Monday

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - SpaceX plans to resume flights of its Falcon 9 rocket on Monday, after pinning down the cause of a launchpad explosion that destroyed a satellite in September, a spokesman said. The California-based private space firm is expected to launch 10 Iridium NEXT communications satellites from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.Iridium said Friday on its website that a static test fire of the Falcon 9 had been completed and the rocket would be ready for next weeks launch scheduled for 1822 GMT, weather permitting. An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded September 1 in Cape Canaveral, destroying a satellite that Facebook planned to use to beam high-speed internet to Africa. That marked a setback for the company and its founder Elon Musk, who wants to revolutionize the launch industry by making rocket components reusable. In a statement earlier this week, SpaceX said it had traced the problem to a pressure vessel in the second-stage liquid oxygen tank. It said it will change the way it fuels for now, and in the future will redesign its pressure vessels. That accident -- the second of its kind since SpaceX was founded in 2002 -- came just over a year after a Falcon 9 rocket failed after liftoff on June 28, 2015, destroying a Dragon cargo capsule bound for the International Space Station. Before that, SpaceX had logged 18 successful launches of the Falcon 9 -- including six of 12 planned supply missions to the ISS carried out as part of a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. SpaceX had hoped to resume Falcon 9 flights as early as November, then in mid-December, before pushing the date to January.

US Congress certifies Trump presidential election

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Congress certified Friday that Donald Trump won the November presidential election, as last-gasp objections by Democratic lawmakers were swatted away by an irked Vice President Joe Biden.Lawmakers held a ceremonial final count in the House of Representatives chamber that affirmed the votes cast last month by the members of the Electoral College chose the Republican property tycoon as the nations 45th president.Donald Trump of New York has received, for president of the United States, 304 votes, while his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton received 227 votes, Biden declared to assembled lawmakers after the counting was complete.Seven electors defied their states results and voted for other figures, but it did not affect the outcome.Biden said the official count shall be deemed sufficient declaration for Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence to take their oaths of office on January 20.The Electoral College results are in. Donald J. Trump will be the 45th president of the United States, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced in a tweet shortly afterward. The count is normally a rubber-stamp event weeks after the electors formally cast their votes. But it was not without drama, as at least three protesters interrupted Bidens tally announcements before being removed from the chamber. One of them shouted one person, one vote from the visitors gallery, an apparent reference to the US election system in which citizens vote indirectly for their choice for president through the Electoral College. When US voters cast ballots on November 8, they did not directly elect the president but rather 538 electors charged with translating voters wishes into reality.Trump won a clear majority of those electors: 306. Two Republican electors bucked their state tally and voted for someone other than Trump.House Democrats interrupted the count multiple times, objecting to electoral vote tallies in different states for several reasons, including Voting Rights Act violations and election-related cyber attacks.Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas halted the proceedings three times, objecting to the results from the state of North Carolina due to massive voter suppression.Such objections are required by House rules to be made in writing, signed by a House member and a Senate member.Biden, banging the gavel and repeatedly calling for order, asked each interrupting lawmaker whether the objections were signed by a senator. When one congresswoman said her objection had not yet been signed by a senator, Biden stood firm.Well, it is over, the vice president said, to loud cheers and applause from Republican lawmakers.Following an extraordinarily divisive campaign, and an election that saw Clinton swamp Trump in the popular tally by nearly 2.9 million votes, diehard Democrats had sought to throw up roadblocks to a Trump presidency at multiple turns.Branding Trump a threat to the nation, they staged a weeks-long campaign, rallying at statehouses across the country and urging electors to break ranks and refuse to vote for him.But their effort failed to change the result in any meaningful way, and the objections at Fridays count fell flat.

Rallying: Loeb wins stormy stage as Peterhansel takes Dakar lead

Posted:

ORURO (AFP) - Stormy conditions in Bolivia forced organisers to shorten the fifth stage of the Dakar Rally on Friday, with defending champion Stephane Peterhansel moving clear after fellow Frenchman Sebastien Loeb took the days honours. The stage was curtailed to just 219km rather than the scheduled 692km (447km timed) linking Tupiza with the old mining city of Oruro, famous for its carnival as heavy rain thrashed the region.Organisers said they had no choice but to curtail the days action after racing on the tough terrain became impractical owing to the poor weather conditions on the road to Oruro.Nine-time rally world champion Loeb, on form after a stage win last Tuesday, was quickly out of the blocks and established a provisional six-minute lead over Spaniard Nani Roma before seeing his lead trimmed back. But he held on for the stage win ahead of Roma and stablemate Peterhansel, whose third place was enough to open up a 1min 09sec advance atop the overall standings. The extent of the treacherous conditions was shown by a photograph of one lorry upturned along the route from Tupiza towards the Uyuni region, famed for its salt flats, as torrents of rain fell.Englishman Sam Sunderland of KTM meanwhile celebrated a second stage win as he took the lead among the motorcycles, making it to stage six for the first time after two previous race attempts ended in early exits.Sunderland has a 7min 7sec advantage over Portuguese Paulo Goncalves with Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren just 12sec further back.Earlier, Spanish Honda rider Joan Barreda had lost the after picking up an hour penalty for refuelling in an unauthorised area, allowing Chilean Pablo Quintanilla of Husqvarna to take the lead.Barreda, who dominated the third stage from San Miguel de Tucuman to San Salvador de Jujuy in the north of Argentina, was demoted to seventh position overall, 41 minutes behind Quintanilla.Three other Honda riders -- Frances Michael Metge, American Ricky Brabec and Portugals Paulo Goncalves -- were also slapped with the same penalty for illegal refuelling during Thursdays fourth stage. The penalties are a blow for the Japanese teams bid to take the title from Austrian rivals KTM, unbeaten in the Dakar since 2002.KTM had already lost defending champion Toby Price of Australia, who was forced to retire on Thursday after breaking his left leg in a fall.Former champion Carlos Sainz of Spain was forced out of the auto event for a fifth time in a row overnight after his Peugeot was badly damaged in an accident.Sainz, the 2010 winner, is the second top auto competitor to quit the race after former two-time winner Nasser Al Attiyah in a Toyota. The Spaniard lost control of his vehicle which rolled over just five kilometres from the finish of Thursdays gruelling fourth stage.Im obviously very disappointed by this withdrawal, said Sainz, also a two-time world rally champion in 1990 and 1992. I regret not being able to to challenge.Sainz had been provisionally third in the standings when misfortune hit more than seven minutes behind French race leader and Peugeot teammate Cyril Despres.Saturday sees the longest special stage -- a 527km timed stretch from Oruro to the high-altitude Bolivian capital of La Paz. Sunday will be a rest day.
