US officials not ruling out terrorism in airport shooting

Posted:

MIAMI (AFP) - US authorities are not ruling out the terrorism angle as a potential motive of the Iraq war veteran accused of killing five people at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, officials said Saturday.Esteban Santiago, 26, was charged in the shooting rampage Friday that also wounded six and sent thousands scrambling for safety before authorities shut down the airport in Florida, a major gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America. We continue to look at all avenues and all motives for this horrific attack, said George Piro, the special agent in charge of Miamis FBI field office. We are continuing to look at the terrorism angle in regards to the potential motivation behind this attack.Santiago was charged Saturday with firearms offenses and carrying out an act of violence at an airport, federal prosecutor Wifredo Ferrer said in a statement. If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life in prison. The suspect was scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Monday.Separate murder charges could be forthcoming from state prosecutors, but no decision has been made yet, a spokesman for Broward County State Attorney Mike Satz told the local Sun Sentinel newspaper.Piro said the suspect appeared to be acting alone and that every indication is that he did follow (Transportation Security Administration) procedures in flying with the weapon, a nine-millimeter semi-automatic handgun he had declared and stowed inside his checked luggage. The incident occurred in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. Authorities said the gunman loaded his gun in a bathroom, then opened fire on passengers collecting their luggage.Santiago started shooting, aiming at his victims heads until he was out of ammunition, Ferrer said.Santiago had traveled from Alaska to Fort Lauderdale, with a stopover in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In November, Santiago had walked into the FBIs Anchorage office exhibiting erratic behavior that led agents to contact local police, who took him to a medical facility for a mental health evaluation, Piro said. However, he was not placed on a no-fly list, Piro added.A former member of the Puerto Rico and Alaska National Guard, Santiago served in Iraq from April 2010 to February 2011. He ended his service in August. The suspect had complained to the FBI that his mind was being controlled by national intelligence agencies, which were forcing him to watch Islamic State jihadist videos.Santiago allegedly opened fire shortly before 1:00 pm (1800 GMT) Friday.A deputy officer came into contact with the gunman after approximately 70 to 80 seconds, and authorities were able to detain him without firing any shots, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters. An aunt, Maria Luisa Ruiz, told the NorthJersey.com news site that Santiago became a father to a baby boy in September -- and that he was having mental problems.Like a month ago, it was like he lost his mind, Ruiz said. He said he saw things. My family and I are in shock right now, she added. Its sad, but we have to confront the situation.Authorities have not identified any victims, but three named in media reports were all getting ready to set off on cruises. They included 84-year-old grandmother Olga Woltering of Marietta, Georgia, the Sun Sentinel reported. The British native and her 90-year-old husband were going on a cruise with family to celebrate his birthday.Olga was so charming, calling everybody Lovey or Love in her unmistakable British accent, the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, where Woltering was an active member, said on its website.Terry Andres, 62, was going on vacation with his wife of nearly four decades, Ann, the Palm Beach Post reported. He lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia and worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.Michael and Kari Oehme, in their 50s from Council Bluffs, Iowa, were both shot, the Miami Herald said. Michael Oehme was killed, while his wife was wounded in the shoulder. In addition to those killed and wounded by the gunman, as many as 40 people went to the hospital for various other injuries such as sprains, Israel said. Three of the wounded were still in the intensive care unit. The shooting renewed anxieties about airport security -- a concern that has loomed large in the post-9/11 era -- and shed new light on ongoing US gun-control debates. The Transportation Security Administration -- the agency responsible for security at United States airports -- allows passengers to travel with unloaded firearms and ammunition as checked baggage.Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who represents the Florida district that includes the airport, said the rules need to be reexamined.Speaking to CNN, she said the incident should prompt close review of whether or not you should be allowed to check a firearm at all -- as well as how passengers should be able to retrieve checked weapons after landing. If there is still exposure to the traveling public of someone who wishes to do them harm and, like this individual, was reunited with their firearm and was able to wreak havoc... it absolutely needs to be addressed.Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, rebuked the government for not taking legislative action to tighten gun laws.Political cowardice is the accomplice of every mass shooter, he wrote on Twitter. The utter silence of Congress in the face of this carnage has become consent. The Fort Lauderdale airport was open Saturday. Staff there were trying to return nearly 20,000 pieces of luggage and other personal items abandoned by passengers fleeing the shooting.

Two Saudi jihadist suspects shot dead in police raid

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi security forces on Saturday shot and killed two suspected jihadists including an explosive belt maker during a police operation in the north of the capital, the interior ministry said.Suspect Tayeh al-Saihari, who had been wanted by authorities for his alleged involvement in jihadist attacks, was spotted in a house in a northern Riyadh neighbourhood, a ministry spokesman said.In a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, the spokesman said that Saihari was with Talal al-Saidi, also wanted by the authorities on suspicion of belonging to jihadist groups.Security forces surrounded the house at dawn and ordered the suspects to surrender but they refused and opened fire on the police who then launched an assault, killing them both, he said. The interior ministry said two explosive belts ready to be activated were found in the house, as well as a homemade bomb and material that could be used to make explosives. It said that Saihari had prepared the explosive belts that were used in suicide attacks, including the deadly bombing of a headquarters of the special forces in 2015 and near the Prophets Mosque in Medina last July. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack that killed 15 people. But no one claimed responsibility for a July 2016 attack in Medina in which four security guards were killed.Since late 2014, IS has claimed a series of bombings and shootings against Shiites in the Sunni-majority kingdom, as well against security forces.

Steve Smith warns of 'difficult series' in India

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Skipper Steve Smith is switching his focus to the difficult challenges confronting his new revamped team in India after polishing off a Test series clean sweep over Pakistan on Saturday.Australia crushed the tourists by 220 runs by tea on the final day in the third Sydney Test to inflict 12 straight Test defeats over Pakistan in Australia, stretching back to 1995.Smith has led Australia to four Test victories and a three-game one-day series win over New Zealand since the nadir of an innings debacle to lose their home series against South Africa in Hobart in November. The Australians have looked a vastly different team with the inclusion of young batsmen Matthew Renshaw and Peter Handscomb, but now face their moment of truth on a gruelling four-Test series in India, starting next month.Smith said having a new set of players may help deal with the mental scars of past tours to India, where Australia have not won a Test match since 2004 and have lost the last seven. It helps in a way (with the new guys), but the guys also havent experienced the conditions as well which is going to be a tough one too, Smith told reporters after the Sydney Test win.Its a completely different place to play, playing on those wickets is nothing like playing here in Australia.Guys will have to adapt quickly and find a way to be successful in those conditions.Smith, who was a member of the Australia team that was hammered 4-0 in India in 2013, said he was anticipating a testing time ahead. Its going to be a very difficult series going over there, he said. Were under no illusions its going to be tough. Were going to have to play some very good cricket if we want to compete over there. Its going to be a great challenge and learning curve for this group.Smith said he expected the core of the current team to play in India.A few of us have been there before and we know its difficult to play in their own backyard. Theyre a very good team, he said.Theres obviously going to be a few people added to the squad. Were going to have to play incredibly well over there.Selectors will meet next week to chose the touring party but coach Darren Lehmann has confirmed there will be no reserve wicketkeeper in India, leaving Matthew Wade and Peter Nevill in a battle for one spot in the side. Were pretty lucky with Pete Handscomb being able to be back up (wicketkeeper), that probably allows us to take a specialist and then him as back up, Lehmann told reporters.Smith said Australias fortunes turned after the nightmare in Hobart, where they went down by an innings and 80 runs to South Africa inside four days forcing drastic team surgery. It was pretty tough times to be honest. You lose your first two Tests of an Australian summer and you are not in a good place, Smith said.It wasnt great times but Im really proud of the way the guys have come in and turned it around since then.I think it was when we all got together as a group and trained for the first time in Adelaide.Straight away I felt a shift in attitude and energy and enthusiasm amongst the group and we were able to put all of that out in the middle and get the performance we were after.Rookie opener Renshaw scored 184 in the first innings of the Sydney Test against Pakistan, while number five batsman Handscomb finished with two centuries and a series average of 114.66 against Pakistan.

PSG register crushing 7-0 win in French Cup as Draxler scores

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain got their French Cup defence off to a dream start on Saturday with new recruit Julian Draxler scoring in a 7-0 rout of Ligue 1 rivals Bastia.Unai Emerys side advance to the last 32 of a tournament in which they are the two-time defending champions ensuring their Corsican rivals remain winless at the Parc des Princes.Making his competitive debut 23-year-old winger Draxler completed the rout scoring the final goal three minutes from the whistle. The German World Cup-winner completed his move this month from Wolfsburg for a reported fee of up to 42 million euros ($45 million).PSG captain Thiago Silva opened the goal fest with a header on 30 minutes with Adrien Rabiot firing in the second from 25 metres out just before the break. It was all one-way traffic in the second half with goals Christopher Nkunku, Thiago Motta, Angel Di Maria and a Lucas penalty humiliating the visitors before Draxler struck.Emerys side, who went into the winter break in third place in Ligue 1, five points behind leaders Nice, are looking to complete a clean sweep of the domestic trophies in France for a third season in succession. The Parisians were however hit when Brazilian captain Silva picked up a thigh injury in a challenge with goalkeeper Kevin Traff minutes before the break. The 32-year-old was treated pitch side for several minutes before limping off.Five other Ligue 1 sides also competing on Saturday advanced.Lille ended the adventure of minnows AS Excelsior -- a sixth-tier side from the Indian Ocean island of Reunion -- 4-1, as Guingamp beat Le Havre 2-1.Monaco on Friday advanced past second division AC Ajaccio 2-1, largely thanks to a goal from star forward Falcao. On Sunday, Marseille travel to Toulouse with Lyon hosting Montpellier.

Ronaldo scores first goal of 2017 as Real Madrid win 5-0

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo paraded his fourth Ballon dOr and powered home his first goal of 2017 as Real Madrid equalled Barcelonas Spanish record 39-game unbeaten run with a 5-0 demolition of lowly Granada on Saturday.Sevilla leapfrogged Barca into second, four points behind Real, thanks to Wissam Ben Yedders hat-trick in a hugely impressive 4-0 win at sixth-placed Real Sociedad, whilst Atletico Madrid won 2-0 at Eibar to move up to fourth. At the Bernabeu, Ronaldo was honoured by previous Ballon dOr winners to have played for Madrid including Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Michael Owen and his coach Zinedine Zidane before kick-off.And Reals relentless run stretching back to April last year continued once the action got underway as they scored four times in the opening half-hour.Isco and Karim Benzema slotted home from close range before Ronaldo, who had been rested for Reals 3-0 Copa del Rey win over Sevilla in midweek, bulleted home a header from Marcelos cross.Another simple finish from Isco made it four before the break and Casemiro turned home James Rodriguezs free-kick for the fifth after half-time.Barca can close back to within three points of the leaders with victory at Villarreal on Sunday. There is no limit, but on the other hand we have to do everything possible to make sure it lasts, Zidane said of his sides stunning form. The Frenchman made four changes from the side that saw off Sevilla with ease in midweek with Keylor Navas returning in goal and all of Ronaldo, Benzema and Isco coming in up front.Once again Zidane was vindicated as all three of the frontline scored in a rapid start. The hosts got a break for the opener as Isco could have been penalised for a trip on Sergi Samper before he exchanged passes with Benzema and slotted low past Guillermo Ochoa.Madrid were also fortunate for the second as Benzema appeared offside when he prodded into an empty net after Ochoa tamely parried Luka Modrics shot into his path.Real captain for the day Marcelo marked the 10-year anniversary since his debut with a pinpoint cross from which Ronaldo powered home his 17th goal of the season. And with the Granada defence once again pulled apart by Madrids movement, Modrics low cross found an unmarked Isco for a simple finish at the back post for his second of the afternoon. The matches are prepared in a certain way depending on whether we have two, three or four days, but the idea is always to do our best, be physically ready and concentrated, added Zidane. If we are ready and concentrated we can do great things.Madrid understandably eased off in the second half, but the European champions did net a fifth just before the hour mark when Casemiro was left unmarked to bundle home substitute Rodriguezs free-kick at the back post.Ronaldo is expected to pick up another individual trophy in FIFAs inaugural The Best award for 2016 on Monday, but one of his rivals for the prize ended a three-month goal drought in La Liga as Antoine Griezmann sealed Atleticos 2-0 win at Eibar. After a first-half short on goal mouth action, Saul Niguez nodded Atletico in front eight minutes after the break.Griezmann hadnt netted in 821 La Liga minutes since October 2, but bundled home from close range after a one-two with Kevin Gameiro 16 minutes from time. However, it is Sevilla who are Reals closest challengers as they bounced back in style from their midweek mauling to inflict Sociedads first home defeat since the opening day of the season.Ben Yedder did most of the damage as he struck twice in four first-half minutes to put the visitors in command. And despite en early rally by Sociedad at the start of the second period, Ben Yedder then teed up Pablo Sarabia to kill the game 17 minutes from time.Ben Yedder produced another cool finish to complete his first La Liga hat-trick in the closing stages and take his tally for the season to an impressive 15.

Rooney equals record as Manchester United register FA Cup win

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Wayne Rooney equalled Bobby Charltons Manchester United scoring record as the FA Cup holders cruised into round four with a 4-0 win over Reading on Saturday.Rooney scored his 249th United goal in the seventh minute at Old Trafford, prompting applause from the watching Charlton, before an Anthony Martial goal and a Marcus Rashford brace completed victory.Third-tier Millwall pulled off the biggest shock of the day by beating top-flight Bournemouth 3-0 at The Den, while Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion both fell to second-tier Championship opposition. Its a proud moment, to do it at a massive club like Manchester United, Rooney, 31, told BT Sport after matching Charltons mark on his 543rd United appearance.Im hugely honoured to play for this club. To be up there with Sir Bobby in terms of goals is a huge honour. Hopefully Ill be up there on my own soon.It was to prove a sorry return to Old Trafford for Reading manager Jaap Stam, the former United centre-back.Making his first appearance since December 17, Rooney broke the deadlock when he used his right knee to steer Juan Matas dinked cross past Reading goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.Rooney created Uniteds second goal in the 15th minute by playing a one-two with Martial, who stroked a cool effort into the bottom-right corner.Rashford made the game safe late on, running onto Michael Carricks pass to score and then pouncing to lash home after Al Habsi embarrassed himself by completely miscuing an attempted clearance.Rooney has now surpassed Charlton, 79, as the leading scorer for both United and England.United, meanwhile, have won eight successive games in all competitions for the first time since 2009.I am happy because it was a professional job from minute one, said United manager Jose Mourinho, whose side host Hull City in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Tuesday.Bobby Charlton is Bobby Charlton, but to have Wayne as the top scorer in such a big club is great for him.United join cross-town rivals Manchester City in round four after Pep Guardiolas side romped to a 5-0 victory at West Ham United on Friday.Arsenal, FA Cup winners in 2014 and 2015, will look to progress later on Saturday when they visit second-tier Preston North End.Steve Morison, Shaun Cummings and Shane Ferguson scored as London side Millwall, beaten FA Cup finalists in 2004, won 3-0 at home to top-tier Bournemouth, whose manager Eddie Howe made 11 changes. It was a solid, all-round team performance today, said Millwall manager Neil Harris.I am delighted because I know what defeating Bournemouth means to our fans.West Brom, riding high in eighth place in the Premier League, lost 2-1 at home to Championship promotion-chasers Derby County, with Tom Ince netting a 54th-minute winner.Portuguese winger Helder Costa, on loan from Benfica, and Matt Doherty scored in each half as Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2-0 at Stoke.Southampton face a replay against second-tier opposition after Steven Naismith scored in the 92nd minute to earn Norwich City a 2-2 draw.Ahmed Musa scored twice in five minutes as misfiring Premier League champions Leicester City -- currently 15th in the top flight -- came from behind to win 2-1 at Everton, who had gone ahead through Romelu Lukaku.Marco Silva won the battle of the new Premier League managers, late goals by Abel Hernandez and Josh Tymon giving Hull City a 2-0 victory over Paul Clements Swansea City.Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce was frustrated on his return to former club Bolton Wanderers as the League One team held the south London side to a 0-0 draw.Watford beat Burton Albion 2-0, while the all-Premier League tie between Sunderland and Burnley finished goalless. There was no fairytale for seventh-tier Stourbridge, the lowest-ranked team in the competition, who lost 2-1 at Wycombe Wanderers of League Two.

Giroud strikes late as Arsenal edge past Preston

Posted:

PRESTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Arsenal were forced to stage a second half fightback to secure a 2-1 win at Preston on Saturday that extended Arsene Wengers record of never having lost in the FA Cup third round.Wengers side suffered an early shock at Deepdale as Callum Robinson put the Championship side on course for their first victory over the Gunners since 1960.Arsenal were fortunate to be only one goal down at the interval, but they produced a much-improved second half showing.Aaron Ramsey got the equaliser less than a minute into the second half and Olivier Giroud completed the comeback in the final minute.Preston, buoyed by a fervent home crowd, took the lead after only seven minutes to ensure a pulsating cup tie.Aiden McGeady showed neat footwork in midfield, dragging the ball back and spinning to create space to beat his marker before slotting a pass inside Nacho Monreal for Jordan Hugill.McGeady was ushered off the ball by Monreal but it broke kindly for Robinson, who took advantage of some leisurely defending to pounce on the ricochet and steer past the on-rushing David Ospina.Despite fielding a strong side, Wenger must have been disappointed to see his side struggle to cope with the early pace being set by Simon Graysons team.Indeed, the only surprise of the opening half was that Arsenal were not trailing by more than a solitary goal.On 22 minutes McGeady again found space behind the defence to play in Hugill whose cross was met by a strong Robinson header, needing a block from Shkodran Mustafi to deny a goal.Seconds later, it was Robinsons turn to be the creator, crossing low from the right for the unmarked Hugill who somehow failed to make contact in front of an open goal for what would have been a certain second.By the time the excellent McGeady crossed from the left and full-back Marnick Vermijl arrived unmarked to volley wide, the Arsenal supporters behind that goal were beginning to voice their disapproval.Giroud had Arsenals first meaningful chance on the half-hour, glancing well wide from Ainsley Maitland-Niles cross, but at least there were signs of Arsenal life.In quick succession, Lucas Perez and Ramsey should have done better as they tried to walk the ball into the net, only to be blocked by whole-hearted Preston defending.Giroud chipped across the face of goal when he might have shot, while Perez launched a powerful header that was well held by Chris Maxwell.Still, there were warning signs for Wenger as a Mustafi error allowed Gallagher a chip which cleared the goalkeeper and was bound for the net until Monreal made an appearance to clear.Wenger must have delivered a half-time team talk of some impact because, within 55 seconds of the restart his side was level.Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain launched the attack down the left and, after picking out Alex Iwobi in the Preston area, the ball was worked to Ramsey who struck an unstoppable shot past Maxwell from 18 yards.Giroud was also handed a chance, from Granit Xhakas well-judged 65th minute free-kick, but only managed to head directly at Maxwell under pressure from more dogged Preston defending. And Mustafi was also denied by Maxwell, with a far more impressive reflex save, from a near-post snapshot following an Arsenal corner. Not for the first time this season, it was the often maligned Giroud who came to Arsenals rescue with another late goal, this time in the 89th minute when he forced home from six yards after Perez managed to clip the ball back from the byline. To complete what had become a satisfactory afternoon for Wenger, the Arsenal manager was able to bring on England forward Danny Welbeck for the final seven minutes for his first appearance since damaging knee ligaments eight months ago.

Djokovic ends Murray's 28 match winning streak to win Doha title

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - Novak Djokovic brought world number one Andy Murrays 28-match winning streak to an end in Doha on Saturday to retain the Qatar Open title in a three-set thriller.Serb star Djokovic won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a high-quality, action-packed match between the two best players in the world lasting almost three hours. It is Djokovics 25th career victory over Murray and puts down an early-season marker against his great British rival, before the Australian Open later this month.Describing Murray as his biggest rival, he said both players had dragged each other to their limits.Every match we play is a huge challenge, you have to accept and expect a great battle, Djokovic told reporters. You saw tonight how much we both wanted to win.He added that he wanted to finish the match off earlier.I had three or four match points in the second set, he turned it around and I thought: Wow I hope this isnt payback timeHe was close ... all the way to the last shot you never know with Andy, added Djokovic who was penalised a point in the second set after destroying his racquet as the tension mounted.Despite going into the third set showing signs of frustration and weariness, Djokovic was able to claw away any momentum Murray had to secure his second successive title in Qatar and the $209,665 first prize.A break of Murrays serve in the seventh game of the final set -- when the Scot looked most likely to win -- proved decisive.Serving for the match, Djokovic secured the title on his fourth match point, having squandered three in the second set when Murray astonishingly recovered from 5-4 down and 40-15 to win three games in a row and force, at that point, an unlikely deciding set.It was Murrays first competitive defeat since losing to Juan Martin del Potro in the Davis Cup back in September. In a typically cagey start between the pair, Djokovic landed the first blow with his only break point of the first set.In the eighth game of the opener, he came back from 40-15 down to win four consecutive points and break Murrays serve. Then, in the seventh game of the second set Djokovic broke Murray again despite falling over and banging his head during one rally. It seemed to be the decisive blow, but Murray would not be easily brushed aside, rallying to take the game into the decider.Murray said he was obviously disappointed to lose but was not too downbeat.I think physically it was a good test to start the year, he said.He added that he lost having failed to capitalise on his chances.I had a break point at 3-2. In the last game I had love-30 on Novaks serve and played a couple of loose shots. I think I had the first break point in the first set as well, didnt get it.He had one and took it, that was the difference this evening.Murray also dismissed any idea that the defeat would have any impact in the forthcoming Australian Open.Saturdays match was the first meeting between the pair since Murray beat the Serb at the ATP World Tour Finals in London in November, snatching Djokovics number one ranking in the process. It was also the 20th time Djokovic has beaten Murray after winning the first set.Despite the defeat, Murray retains his world number one ranking.
