SYDNEY (AFP) - Peter Handscomb posted his fourth half-century in four Tests as Australia pressed on after the loss of young opener Matthew Renshaw in the third Test against Pakistan on Wednesday.Handscomb, brought into the Australian team with Renshaw in a shake-up after the Hobart Test debacle against South Africa in November, was working towards his second Test century on the second day.At lunch, Australia had progressed from their overnight 365 for three to 454 for four with Handscomb on 83 and debutant Hilton Cartwright looking solid on 25.The home side added 89 runs in the first session off 29 overs under sunny skies. Renshaws epic knock ended inside the first half-hour when he played paceman Imran Khan on to his stumps for 184.The 20-year-old rookies first century in his fourth Test came off 293 balls with 20 fours in 413 minutes. He shared in a 142-run stand with fellow newcomer Handscomb, who raised his fourth 50 off 109 balls.Zimbabwe-born Cartwright, brought in for Nic Maddinson at number six for the Sydney Test, caressed a sweet cover drive for four from his first ball in Test cricket off Mohammad Amir. But Cartwright had an escape on 25 just before the break when dropped by veteran Younis Khan at slip off Azhar Ali.The powerfully-built all-rounder shared in a 68-run stand with Handscomb for the fifth wicket.Pakistan were showing the gruelling effects of the back-to-back Boxing Day-New Year Tests with Amir and leg-spinner Yasir Shah nursing leg injuries and paceman Wahab Riaz leaving the field holding his right side.

Fighting puts Syria peace negotiations at risk

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - A dozen Syrian rebel factions have suspended talks on new peace negotiations, accusing President Bashar al-Assads regime of violating a four-day-old ceasefire with attacks near Damascus that continued Tuesday. In the northwestern province of Idlib, an air strike killed at least 25 members of former Al Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front, including senior figures. The rebels decision threatens the process sponsored by regime ally Russia and rebel backer Turkey, which began with a truce and is meant to lead to negotiations in the Kazakh capital Astana this month. The ceasefire has brought quiet to large parts of the country but has been undermined by sporadic violence, particularly fighting in the Wadi Barada region north of Damascus that supplies the capitals water.Government forces backed by fighters from Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah continue to press a two-week offensive there, despite the ceasefire which began on December 30.A dozen rebel groups announced late Monday the freezing of all discussion linked to the Astana negotiations. They said they had respected the ceasefire, but accused the regime of major and frequent violations, notably in the (rebel) regions of Wadi Barada and Eastern Ghouta, near Damascus. If things dont return to how they were before, the accord will be considered null and void, they said.It was signed by a dozen groups, including the Army of Islam, Faylaq al-Sham and the Sultan Murad Brigade, which is close to Turkey.Fierce fighting in Wadi Barada continued Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.Government forces used barrel bombs and artillery after advancing Monday to the outskirts of the Ain al-Fijeh spring, the areas main water source, the Britain-based monitor said.Regime shelling killed two civilians in Wadi Barada as well as one in the town of Douma, which is east of Damascus, it added. The regime accuses rebels of deliberately damaging infrastructure, poisoning the water supply with fuel then cutting the flow to Damascus altogether.Rebels say government strikes caused the damage, which has left four million people in Damascus without water since December 22.The regime says Fateh al-Sham is in the area, a claim opposition fighters deny. Fateh al-Sham, along with the Islamic State (IS) group, is excluded from the truce. The Observatory said an air strike by unidentified aircraft on Tuesday killed at least 25 Fateh al-Sham members including senior figures and at least four prisoners near Sarmada in Idlib province.Fateh al-Sham, on its Telegram account, accused the US-led coalition of carrying out the raid.An AFP correspondent saw several strikes hitting the town including one on a Fateh al-Sham checkpoint.Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman warned the truce was in a critical phase and faced collapse if sponsors Russia and Turkey did not intervene to save it.The monitor and Russias defence ministry reported on Tuesday dozens of ceasefire violations. The ceasefire and planned talks are the latest effort to negotiate an end to Syrias conflict, which has killed more than 310,000 people since it began with anti-government protests in March 2011.Ankara and Moscow back opposing sides in the conflict but have worked closely of late, brokering a deal allowing civilians and rebels to leave Aleppo city before government troops seized it last month. The UN Security Council has backed the Russian-Turkish efforts, despite them offering a competing track to UN-sponsored talks set to resume in Geneva in February. Both Russia and Turkey have launched military interventions in Syria. Moscow entered on the governments side in September 2015, while Ankara began an offensive against IS and Kurdish militants in August 2016.The conflict has spilled into Turkey, with a string of deadly attacks claimed by or blamed on IS or Kurdish groups. On Monday, IS took responsibility for a New Years attack on an Istanbul nightclub that killed 39 people.

'I am not a miracle worker': new UN chief

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The new United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres, warned Tuesday that the world body faces very challenging times and asked for support of reforms to make it better able to deal with them. Before beginning his first day of work at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres, who succeeded Ban Ki-moon as secretary-general on January 1, addressed staff and diplomats about the need for an overhaul of the international organization.I think it is useful to say there are no miracles, he said. I am sure I am not a miracle maker. The unanimous election of Guterres -- who fought for migrants rights as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for a decade -- has energized UN diplomats who see him as a skilled politician who may be able to overcome the divisions crippling the 193-nation UN.In his remarks to personnel, Guterres underscored the complex crises in the world that the UN must deal with to foster peace. We should have no illusions, he said. We are facing very challenging times. We see everywhere in the world conflicts that multiply and are interlinked and have triggered this new phenomenon of global terrorism.Guterres noted, in this context, the generosity of the Turkish people... victim of a terrible terrorist attack at a nightclub in Istanbul on New Years Eve.While the UN has eased the sufferings of people, we still fail in the prevention of conflicts and conflict resolution, he said, in an implicit reference to the war in Syria. There is a lot of resistance in many parts of the world, a lot of skepticism about the role the UN can play, he added. We need to be able to recognize our shortcomings, our failures, the Portuguese former prime minister told hundreds of people gathered for his address. He called for a strong engagement to change, reform and improve the international body and get rid of the straightjacket of bureaucracy. The only way we can achieve our goals is to really work together as a team and serve the values enshrined in the Charter and that unite humanity, he said.Asked by reporters whether he was concerned about US President-elect Donald Trumps criticism of the UN, Guterres said: No. Im concerned with all the terrible problems we face in the world. He cited wars, human rights violations and poverty. I hope that we will all be able to come together to solve these problems.Trump, in a tweet last week, denounced the UN as just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time.In a New Years message Sunday as he took the helm of the UN, Guterres said he wanted to make 2017 a year to put peace first.

US store draws outrage over 'no Muslims' sign

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A grocery shop in the US state of New Mexico is under fire for posting controversial signs -- including one that reads Obama & other Muslims Not welcome here -- on its storefront. The store, located in the tiny town of Mayhill, about 165 miles (265 kilometers) southeast of Albuquerque, has reportedly been posting such signs for years but drew scrutiny after a traveler stumbled on the latest postings and alerted a television station.According to a former employee interviewed by local TV broadcaster KOB, the store owner threw out people who were offended by the signs. Its been here a long time, Marlon McWilliams told the station. If you go in there and you offend him, you cant go in there no more.He turns lots of people away.McWilliams said the owner targeted President Barack Obama and other public figures and sold the signs to customers. One sign said Kill Obama in large letters with the word care in small print below it.The contentious postings have met with a firestorm on social media with many calling for a boycott of the store. Others, however, are defending the store owners right to free speech. The owner of the store, which is up for sale, could not be reached for comment nor could the realtor handling the sale.Staff at a hotel and cafe located next to the store declined comment when reached by AFP.The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an advocacy group, meanwhile issued a statement urging the store owner to remove the signs. While everyone has the first amendment right to free speech -- even offensive speech -- we urge the stores owner to remove the sign in the interest of common decency and of our nations unity at a time of increasing divisions, said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper.

Ex-Qaeda affiliate leaders among 25 dead in Syria strike

BEIRUT (AFP) - An air strike in Syria on Tuesday killed at least 25 members of former Al Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front including senior figures, a monitor said.Unidentified aircraft hit one of the groups most important bases in Syria, in the northwestern province of Idlib, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.Among the dead were leading members of the group, formerly known as Al-Nusra Front, who were holding a meeting there, he said, without identifying them.Fateh al-Sham used its Telegram account to accuse the US-led coalition of carrying out the raid.More than 20 martyrs after the Crusader coalition targeted a central base in the north Idlib countryside, it said.An AFP correspondent said several strikes had hit the town including one on a Fateh al-Sham checkpoint. He saw ambulances rushing to the area. The strike came four days into a fragile ceasefire between Syrias regime and major rebel groups brokered by Russia and Turkey.Moscow and Damascus say the truce does not cover Fateh al-Sham or the Islamic State group, labelled by the UN Security Council as terrorist organisations.Rebel groups say that Idlib is covered by the agreement. In November the Pentagon said a US drone strike killed a senior Al Qaeda leader in the same area.

SpaceX ready to launch again

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - SpaceX says it has determined the cause of a launchpad explosion that destroyed a satellite in September and is ready to start launches again as early as Sunday. An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded September 1 in Cape Canaveral, destroying a satellite that Facebook planned to use to beam high-speed internet to Africa. That marked a setback for the California-based private space firm and its founder Elon Musk, who wants to revolutionize the launch industry by making rocket components reusable. In a statement Monday, SpaceX said it had traced the problem to a pressure vessel in the second-stage liquid oxygen tank. It said it will change the way it fuels for now, and in the future will redesign its pressure vessels.SpaceX said it hopes to launch 10 Iridium NEXT communications satellites from a base in California on Sunday. The Federal Aviation Administration has to approve the conclusions of the SpaceX investigation of the September failure. That accident -- the second of its kind since SpaceX was founded in 2002 -- came just over a year after a Falcon 9 rocket failed after liftoff on June 28, 2015, destroying a Dragon cargo capsule bound for the International Space Station. Before that, SpaceX had logged 18 successful launches of the Falcon 9 -- including six of 12 planned supply missions to the ISS carried out as part of a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. It carried out another eight successful launches since June 2015, including in August of last year when a Falcon 9 successfully placed a Japanese communications satellite in orbit, and then landed intact on a floating drone ship. Before then the firm lost several rockets as it attempted to land them upright on an ocean platform at the end of a flight -- a crucial part of its strategy for reusable spacecraft.

Football: Stoke end barren run to add to Watford woes

Posted:

STOKE-ON-TRENT (AFP) - Stoke got back on track with a 2-0 win over Watford on Tuesday that added to the pressure on Hornets manager Walter Mazzarri.Ryan Shawcross scored his first goal for two years in first-half stoppage time before Peter Crouch netted his 98th Premier League goal shortly after the interval at the Britannia Stadium.Stokes first win in six matches lifted them up to 11th in the table, above injury-ravaged Watford, whose boss Mazzarri looks under increasing pressure following a sixth defeat in their last eight games.Stoke boss Mark Hughes persisted with his three-man defence, having switched to it for Novembers win at Watford, and also had striker Marko Arnautovic back from suspension.Arnautovic was set free by Joe Allens through ball after a mistake by Sebastian Prodl and the Austrian cut the ball across the six-yard box for Jonathan Walters, who might have scored were it not for Miguel Britoss brilliant intervention.A half between two sides who had conceded a combined eight goals at the weekend was heading for a scoreless conclusion before Shawcross struck in stoppage time. The Stoke skipper met Charlie Adams corner 12 yards out and his effort was only helped into the corner by Gomes, with no man on his near post to spare his stoppers blushes.Four minutes after the interval Stoke doubled their lead. The Hornets had nearly levelled when Abdoulaye Doucoures fierce right-footed try was pushed out by Lee Grant before their defensive shortcomings once again reared their head.A semi-cleared corner found its way back out to Adam on the left and his weak low cross somehow managed to get past Prodl, with Crouch, standing behind him, knowing little about the finishing touch which saw the ball divert off his thigh and into the corner. It was the first time since February 2015 that the 35-year-old had netted in back-to-back Premier League games.

Arsenal draw 3-3 against Bournemouth after staging a comeback

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal staged a sensational fightback from three goals down as Olivier Girouds last-gasp equaliser rescued a draw at Bournemouth, while Swansea welcomed new boss Paul Clement with a crucial 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Tuesday.Arsene Wengers side were facing their first defeat -- and a major setback to their Premier League title hopes -- to Bournemouth after goals from Charlie Daniels, Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser stunned the Gunners at Dean Court. But Arsenal scored three times in the last 20 minutes as Alexis Sanchez and Lucas Perez netted before Bournemouth captain Simon Francis was sent off, setting the stage for Girouds headed equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time. The Gunners gritty 3-3 draw left them in fourth place, eight points behind leaders Chelsea, who play their game in hand at Tottenham on Wednesday. At Selhurst Park, Clement saw Swansea climb off the bottom of the table just hours after his appointment and in the days other match Stoke won 2-0 against a Watford side on the slide.Wenger had bemoaned the fixture schedule that had Arsenal back in action just 48 hours after their victory against Palace and the Frenchman wore a furious expression as his sluggish side were torn apart in the first half.Bournemouth took the lead in the 16th minute when Daniels collected a Junior Stanislas pass, cut past Hector Bellerin and slotted home.Fraser earned a 21st-minute penalty with a surging run that teased a needless foul from Granit Xhaka.Wilson sent Petr Cech the wrong way with a cool spot-kick and Fraser made it three for Bournemouth when he got away with a nudge on Bellerin and fired home in the 58th minute.Sanchezs 70th-minute header from Girouds cross gave Arsenal hope and Perez set up a tense finale when the striker bagged his first Premier League goal with a superb volley five minutes later.Franciss red card for a rash lunge on Aaron Ramsey stacked the odds against Bournemouth and France striker Giroud capped the fightback when he scored with a glancing header from Xhakas cross.Giroud celebrated by replicating the scorpion kick that brought him a memorable goal against Palace on Sunday.Clement, who had been working as Bayern Munichs assistant coach, is Swanseas third boss this season following the sackings of Bob Bradley and Francesco Guidolin.Having been appointed earlier in the day, Clement was at Selhurst Park to watch his new team, although caretaker Alan Curtis picked the starting line-up, and the presence of their new boss energised Swansea.Their pressure was rewarded in the 42nd minute when Gylfi Sigurdssons free-kick was headed in by Alfie Mawson for his first Premier League goal.Sam Allardyce, taking charge of his first home match as Palace boss, trudged off with boos ringing in his ears at half-time.Palace drew level in the 83rd minute when Wilfried Zaha met a Martin Kelly cross in midair with a superb scissor kick from 15 yards. But Clement, who had been in the dug-out since half-time, was celebrating five minutes later when Angel Rangel smashed the winner to lift Swansea to 19th place, one point behind fourth-bottom Palace.Stoke moved away from the relegation zone with a 2-0 win against Watford at the Britannia Stadium.Ryan Shawcross put Stoke ahead on the stroke of half-time with a confident finish from Charlie Adams corner.Adam was the provider again when Stoke increased their lead, this time sending over a cross that Peter Crouch converted in the 49th minute.
