Judge blocks part of Trump's immigration ban for those in US

NEW YORK / WASHINGTON (Reuters / AFP) - President Donald Trump’s order to restrict people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States sparked outrage but hit a roadblock late on Saturday when a federal judge said stranded travelers could stay in the country.Victory the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), whose lawyers sued the government, tweeted after US District Judge Ann Donnelly issued her decision. Our courts today worked as they should as bulwarks against government abuse or unconstitutional policies and ordersThe emergency court ruling was cheered at Boston’s Logan International Airport, one of several major U.S. airports where protesters angry with Trump’s order gathered andchanted Let them in, let them inDemonstrators shout slogans during anti-Donald Trump immigration ban protests inside Terminal 4 at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco, California, U.S., January 28, 2017. REUTERS/Kate MunschThe American Civil Liberties Union, which sought the temporary stay, said it would help 100 to 200 people with valid visas or refugee status who found themselves detained in transit or at U.S. airports after Trump signed the order late on Friday. The exact number of those affected is unclear, but the judge ordered the government to provide lists of all those detained at US airports since the measure went into effect.Sending those travelers back to their home countries following Trump’s order exposes them to substantial and irreparable injury, wrote Donnelly, who was appointed by Trump’s Democratic predecessor Barack Obama. It was a dramatic end to Trump’s first week in office, capped by the Republican president’s four-month ban on refugees entering the United States and a 90-day hold on travelers from Muslim countries. The targeted countries are Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.Donnelly’s decision shows that when President Trump enacts laws or executive orders that are unconstitutional, and illegal, the courts are there to defend everyone’s rights, ACLU executive director Anthony Romero said in leaving the emergency hearing. But the battle is far from over, and another hearing was set for next month. At minimum, they will not be returned to danger, said ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt. The key tonight was making sure nobody was put back on a plane.Protesters gather outsideTerminal 4 at JFK airport in opposition to U.S. president Donald Trump’s proposed ban on immigration in Queens, New York City, U.S., January 28, 2017. Cameroon stun Senegal on penalties to reach African Cup last 4

Posted:

FRANCEVILLE, Gabon, Jan 28, 2017 (AFP) - Sadio Manes decisive penalty miss allowed Cameroon to knock fancied Senegal out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals on Saturday and join Burkina Faso in the last four.Cameroon beat Senegal 5-4 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in Franceville, southern Gabon, in the days second game following a 2-0 win for Burkina Faso against Tunisia in Libreville earlier.Liverpool star Mane was the only player to miss from the spot in the shoot-out in Franceville, with Cameroon goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa saving his effort from 12 yards.Vincent Aboubakar then stepped up to score and take the Indomitable Lions through to the last four at the expense of a Senegal side who were one of the favourites coming into the tournament.Cameroon, who also beat Senegal on penalties in the final of the 2002 Cup of Nations, can now look forward to a semi-final tie against either DR Congo or Ghana in Franceville on Thursday. It is the first time Cameroon have reached the last four since 2008, when they lost to Egypt in the final in Ghana. We have the possibility to write a beautiful page in our history and we do not want to stop here, Cameroon captain Benjamin Moukandjo told Canal Plus Afrique. Were going one game at a time. We have a semi-final to play, and whoever it is against we hope it will be as beautiful as this.Senegal had enjoyed the better of the chances in normal time, but could not find a way past Ondoa, who was in inspired form. Our performance was good. We tried to play football against a side who were well organised and got men behind the ball, said the Senegal coach Aliou Cisse, who had missed the crucial penalty when the Lions of Teranga lost the 2002 final. We know about penalties. It comes down to luck. They won it and I wish them good luck.Senegals elimination means the three men who made up the podium for the 2016 African Footballer of the Year award have all been knocked out of the Cup of Nations, with Mane joining Algerias Riyad Mahrez and Gabons Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in heading for the exit.Nobody had expected to see Cameroon go far after their build-up to the tournament had been marred by the refusal of several key players to accept call-ups.Few tipped Burkina Faso to go far either, but the 2013 runners-up secured their place in the last four by getting the better of Tunisia with two late goals. The Stallions had looked the more dangerous side throughout but it took the late introduction of Aristide Bance to make the difference.Portuguese coach Paulo Duarte introduced the giant striker on 76 minutes as a tight, physical last-eight clash seemed destined for extra time.Within five minutes Bance broke the deadlock in front of a sparse crowd in Libreville by slamming the ball into the net after a free-kick was pushed into his path just outside the box.Prejuce Nakoulma doubled the lead on 84 minutes through a breakaway goal and Burkina Faso will now meet Egypt or Morocco at the same venue on Wednesday. We produced high-level football, said Duarte. There was quality and confidence in our performance. The dream is to do better than in 2013, but it will not be easy.Tunisia coach Henryk Kasperczak said: We did not show our qualities. We did not possess the rage to win.We were a little tired, the physical freshness was not perfect, we did not play quickly enough when attacking.DR Congo and 2015 runners-up Ghana meet in Oyem on Sunday at 1600 GMT.The last quarter-final, between Herve Renards Morocco and their north African rivals Egypt, is in Port-Gentil at 1900 GMT.

Football: Walcott hat-trick as Arsenal dump Saints out of FA Cup

Posted:

SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Theo Walcott struck a hat-trick against his former club after Danny Welbeck scored twice on his first start since a knee injury in May as Arsenal thrashed Southampton 5-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup at St Marys on Saturday. It was a match between two weakened teams, but the strength in depth of Arsenal, FA Cup winners in 2014 and 2015, ensured the visitors won out.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will have been especially pleased with the performance of Welbeck, who had not started since a 2-2 draw away to Manchester City in May.It was only the Gunners second win at St Marys in seven attempts and was sweet revenge for a 4-0 defeat at the south coast ground in the Premier League last season.Welbeck put Arsenal ahead with his first goal since the winner in a 1-0 victory over Norwich on April 30 last year and added a second before Walcott got in on the act before the break, adding two more in the second half. Both managers made 10 changes to the teams that started their previous matches, with Southampton having reached the League Cup final after a strenuous midweek tie against Liverpool at Anfield.Only young central defender Jack Stephens kept his place, while goalkeeper Harry Lewis, whose only previous first-team games for the Saints had been made in the third-round tie and replay against Norwich City, replaced Fraser Forster ahead of regular second-choice Stuart Taylor. The relative strength of the two line-ups was plain and Wenger, serving the first match of his four-game touchline ban for pushing fourth official Anthony Taylor during the 2-1 victory over Burnley, was able to relax in the directors box.Arsenals Jeff Reine Adelaide had an early shot blocked before Lucas Perez, found in plenty of space on the left by Welbecks pass, hit his shot beyond the far post.Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was next to line up a shot, but his effort went well wide.An Arsenal goal seemed inevitable and it duly arrived in the 15th minute. The outstanding 19-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles, in a deep midfield role on only his fourth first-team start for Arsenal, played a pass forward to Perez, whose flick found Welbeck running clear of the defence to chip the ball over Lewis and in off the crossbar.Six minutes later the England forward was celebrating again. Oxlade-Chamberlains long forward pass found him making up three yards on Stephens, taking the dropping ball away from the defender with his first touch and rolling a left-foot shot gently past Lewis with his second.Saints looked for a swift reply but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg volleyed over the bar in the 35th minute and 60 seconds later Shane Long got goal-side of Rob Holding and blasted a shot towards the top near corner only for a leaping David Ospina to palm the ball away.Shkodran Mustafi should have made it 3-0 when he glanced a header wide from a free-kick but the Gunners extended their lead anyway in the 35th minute as Welbeck turned provider.Saints gave the ball away as Stephenss attempted clearance rebounded off Hojbjerg to Welbeck. He in turn exchanged passes with Perez and crossed low into the middle where Walcott got ahead of Sam McQueen to score.Southampton manager Claude Puel sent on substitutes Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond but it made little difference and instead it was an Arsenals substitute, Alexis Sanchez, who created the next goal in the 69th minute.Delaying his run to stay onside, he took a pass from Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right and cut the ball back for Walcott to shoot into the corner.Walcott then rubbed salt in the Saints wounds as he side-footed calmly home six minutes from time to complete his hat-trick after Sanchez, running down the left, had rolled the ball across the penalty area.

Putin call a 'significant start' to better US-Russia ties: White House

Posted:

WASHINGTON, Jan 28, 2017 (AFP) - President Donald Trumps White House hailed Saturday his call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin as a significant start to better ties between Washington and Moscow, whose relations have plunged to lows not seen since the Cold War.During the hour-long conversation, which the White House billed as a congratulatory call from Putin, the pair discussed cooperation against the Islamic State group. The positive call was a significant start to improving the relationship between the United States and Russia that is in need of repair, a White House statement read. Both President Trump and President Putin are hopeful that after todays call the two sides can move quickly to tackle terrorism and other important issues of mutual concern.Earlier, the Kremlin said the two had agreed to develop relations as equals and to establish real coordination against the Islamic State group.Describing it as a positive exchange, the Kremlin said the two leaders touched on many subjects from the Iranian nuclear deal to the Ukraine and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, the tensions on the Korean peninsula and trade relations. The priority in their talks was the fight against international terrorism, and the pair spoke of their desire to meet, it added. The US and Russian leaders had spoken for the first time by phone in November, just after the billionaire tycoons surprise election victory in the US.Back then, they agreed on the need to normalize relations between Moscow and Washington after the tensions under then-president Barack Obamas administration over the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.

Football: Liverpool out of FA Cup, Spurs survive Wycombe scare

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship club Wolves as Tottenham survived a potential giant-killing of their own by twice coming from behind in a 4-3 win over fourth-tier Wycombe Wanderers.Elsewhere, Premier League giants Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City all made it comfortably through to the last 16.Seven-times FA Cup winners Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to second-tier Wolves as the Merseysiders season went from bad to worse.Defeat meant Liverpool, 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea -- their next opponents at Anfield on Tuesday -- had been knocked out of two cup competitions in four days following their 2-0 aggregate loss to Southampton in Wednesdays League Cup semi-final.Wolves were ahead in under a minute, Richard Stearman heading in a free-kick and, four minutes before half-time, Andreas Weimann finished an excellent counter-attack by the Midlands club. But, having rarely threatened, a much-changed Liverpool pulled a goal back when Divock Origi scored from close range in the 86th minute following a corner. That, however, was good as it got for Liverpool, who have now won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions. We were very bad, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told BT Sport. We started badly and it didnt really get better. For Wolves, victory gave them a second Premier League scalp in this seasons FA Cup after they beat Stoke City in the third round and manager Paul Lambert said: Well enjoy the ride. We might get dismantled in the next game but the last two (FA Cup) games have been unbelievable.Wycombe threatened an even bigger upset as they surged into a 2-0 lead away to eight-times FA Cup winners Spurs thanks to two first-half goals from captain Paul Hayes only for Son Heung-Min, who scored twice, to grab the winning goal seven minutes into stoppage-time.Hayes fired Wycombe into a 23rd-minute lead with a fine volley. And in the 36th minute, he made it 2-0 from the penalty spot following Cameron Carter-Vickerss foul on Sam Wood. But Son scored on the hour and four minutes later the north London side were level through a Vincent Janssen penalty after he was brought down in the box.Wycombe, however, regained the lead though Gary Thompsons 83rd-minute header only, with two minutes of normal time left, for England midfielder Alli, on as a substitute, to make it 3-3.Wycombe were then cruelly denied even a replay when South Korea forward Son scored with a deflected shot seconds before the final whistle.Full credit to Wycombe, they were heroes, relieved Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino told the BBC.Chelsea kept their double hopes alive with a comfortable 4-0 fourth-round win at home to fellow west London club Brentford.Wilian gave Chelsea a 14th-minute lead with a free-kick into the top corner.Minutes later, Chelsea were 2-0 up through Pedro. Branislav Ivanovic made it 3-0 before Michy Batshuayis penalty nine minutes from time completed the scoring.Manchester City won an all-Premier League tie against Crystal Palace, last seasons losing finalists, 3-0 courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Yaya Toure.England forward Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick against his former club as Arsenal won 5-0 away to Southampton in Saturdays late kick-off.First-half goals from Danny Welbeck, who scored twice in his first start since a knee injury in May, and Walcott put Arsenal 3-0 up.Walcott completed his treble after the break, with the Gunners untroubled as manager Arsene Wenger served the first of a four-game touchline ban for misconduct.I have spent so much time on the bench that physically it is difficult to be far away, but the most important thing is Arsenal to win, said Wenger.Saints manager Claude Puel, once a protege of fellow Frenchman Wenger, made 10 changes to the side that beat Liverpool but insisted he had little choice.I am responsible for the defeat, he said. We had nine players not available and I had to protect some players. In other FA Cup ties, Premier League Burnley and Middlesbrough triumphed following 2-0 and 1-0 wins over lower league Bristol City and Accrington respectively.Meanwhile non-league Lincoln stunned Championship leaders Brighton 3-1 and third-tier Oxford upset second-tier Newcastle 3-0 as Blackburn defeated Blackpool 2-0 and Huddersfield thrashed Rochdale 4-0.FA Cup holders United are at home to Wigan on Sunday while non-league Sutton face Championship club Leeds.

US agrees to 'immediate' post-Brexit trade talks: UK

Posted:

LONDON, Jan 28, 2017 (AFP) - US President Donald Trump has agreed to start immediate trade talks with Britain with the goal of preserving current arrangements when it leaves the European Union, Downing Street said Saturday. The high-level talks, agreed during Prime Minister Theresa Mays visit to the White House on Friday, risk antagonising EU leaders, who have warned London cannot start negotiations with other countries until it exits the bloc. The bilateral talks, which also include setting up joint working groups, are aimed at laying the groundwork for a new deal that can be signed as soon as possible after Brexit. The first step towards achieving this will be a new Trade Negotiation Agreement (TNA) which will see high-level talks between the two nations beginning immediately, a Downing Street spokesman said. The agreement came in a working lunch with Trump in Washington, where May became the first foreign leader to meet the new US president following his inauguration.May was keen to secure an early committment to the UK-US special relationship from Trump, who has alarmed Americas allies with his criticism of NATO and the EU.She has promised to be frank with the president, but drew criticism at home when, during a trip to Turkey on Saturday, she refused to condemn Trumps refugee policy.Asked three times at a press conference about the executive order suspending refugee arrivals, May replied: The United States is responsible for the United States policy on refugees. She flew back home into a deepening diplomatic storm after it emerged her own MP Nadhim Zahawi would be barred under the clampdown having being born in Iraq, despite holding a British passport, raising calls for her to speak on behalf of affected British citizens.Germany and France have expressed concern about the policy, while the United Nations said it hoped it was only temporary.Securing the promise of early trade talks was a key goal for the Washington trip, amid concerns at home of the economic impact of withdrawing from Europes single market.Downing Street said Trump had pledged to ensure that the trade agreements Britain currently has with the US through its EU membership would continue after it leaves. This is the first step leading to a future trade deal with the US which could provide huge benefits to our economic muscle and will give businesses additional certainty and confidence, May said. The talks will also look at removing non-tariff barriers blocking British exports of food and agriculture to the United States, and the mutual recognition of professional qualifications to make it easier for people in both countries to do business.Bilateral trade is currently worth more than 150 billion pounds ($188 billion, 176 billion euros) and the United States is the single biggest source of inward investment in Britain.May has promised to start the two-year process of leaving the EU by the end of March, but her government has already had informal trade discussions with India, Australia and New Zealand. The European Commission warned London this week against any third-party trade negotiations before Brexit. If they talk about this, thats fine, but they cannot start negotiating until they have left, trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrm said.Earlier, Downing Street sought to play down a moment in Trumps meeting with May where he briefly held her hand as they walked down the West Wing colonnade.A spokeswoman said there was an unseen ramp -- he offered his hand, which she took. She also revealed that over their lunch of braised beef shortribs, Trump said he wanted their relationship to be even closer than that of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan during the Cold War.The president also kept the menu, the spokeswoman said, a habit he apparently has to remember significant moments. Keep that safe, he told a staff member. I had lunch with the prime minister.

Tennis: Peers-Kontinen stun Bryans to win doubles title

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Australias John Peers and his Finnish partner Henri Kontinen upset highly decorated Americans Bob and Mike Bryan to win the Australian Open mens doubles on Saturday.Seeded four, they came through a tough battle 7-5, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena to deprive the third-seeded Bryan brothers of a seventh Melbourne title and a 17th Grand Slam crown. For Peers and Kontinen it was a first major title, with the Melbourne-born Australian fittingly hitting the winner, spinning a lob over the head of the Bryan twins. He is the first Australian to win the title since Todd Woodbridge in 2001.

Football: Double-chasing Chelsea thrash Brentford in FA Cup

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Premier League leaders Chelsea remained on course for a domestic double as they eased into the last 16 of the FA Cup with a comfortable 4-0 win at home to second-tier Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Blues, eight points clear at the summit of English football, were rarely tested by their fellow west London side, who advanced with goals from Willian, Pedro, Branislav Ivanovic and Michy Batshuayi. If this was a final Chelsea appearance for Ivanovic, who has been linked with a transfer window move, the Serbia defender gave the Stamford Bridge faithful something to remember him by after coming on as a substitute for the final half hour of this match.Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, ahead of Tuesdays league match away to Liverpool, made changes to his side.Yet even with Eden Hazard and Diego Costa among those rested, Chelsea still boasted a strong-enough team to see off a mid-table Championship side with ease. The clubs last met in 2013, with Chelsea needing a replay at the same stage of the competition to see off Brentford.A repeat never looked likely on Saturday.Chelsea had scored in their last 40 FA Cup ties, stretching back to 2000, and continued that trend through Willians 14th-minute free-kick.Lasse Vibe was adjusted to have upended Pedro and Brazilian winger Wilian stepped up to curl home past Brentford goalkeeper Dan Bentley.Brentford last defeated Chelsea in 1939 and things soon got worse for the visitors.Batshuayi, making a rare start, was given too much space to find Pedro, who took one touch before firing underneath Bentley in the 21st minute.Brentford could not cope with Chelseas pace and movement and Batshuayi should have extended the home sides lead on the half hour. The Belgium striker, who has struggled to make an impact since joining for 33 million ($41 million, 39 million euros) in pre-season, collected John Terrys knockdown and had two attempts only for Bentley to scramble the ball away just inches from his own goal-line.Bentley, not for the first time, came to Brentfords rescue by pushing Ruben Lotfus Cheeks low shot wide as the visitors struggled to contain the dominant hosts.Vibe then found himself crowded out after beating Terry to the bouncing ball.It was a rare scare for the home side and normal service was almost resumed after Willian danced his way past two defenders before shooting just over the top in the 52nd minute.Another strong run from Willian saw him feed Loftus-Cheek only for the midfielders chip to bounce back off the crossbar. The game was opening up with Brentford finally finding their feet and Nico Yennaris was denied by goalkeeper Asmir Begovic. But it was Ivanovic, just five minutes after his arrival off the bench, who killed off the contest for good. After being played in by Pedro, the right-wing back drove low and true past Bentley in the 69th minute.Ivanovic was involved again when Yoann Barbet tripped the defender for a clear 81st minute penalty dispatched by Batshuayi.

Tennis: Federer, Nadal clash in blockbuster Aussie final

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will collide in a hugely anticipated Australian Open final on Sunday after both veterans beat the odds to open a new chapter in their thrilling Grand Slam rivalry.Federer, 35, will become the oldest Grand Slam finalist in 43 years, while Nadal, 30, has defied a series of injuries to reach his first major title match since he won the 2014 French Open. Its a final that nobody saw coming but after the early exits of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, the old rivals have seized their opportunity with both hands. For Federer, its a chance to extend his all-time record tally of Grand Slam wins to 18, and exact a measure of revenge on his long-time nemesis.Nadal can win his 15th Grand Slam title, closing the gap on Federer and drawing level with Pete Sampras in second place on the all-time list of major-winners.It comes after Serena and Venus Williams, aged 35 and 36 respectively, met in the womens final -- making it the first Open-era Grand Slam tournament where all four singles finalists have been in their thirties.Neither of the former world number ones was expected to reach the final after injuries disrupted their seasons last year and their rankings dipped, to 17 for Federer and nine for Nadal. The unexpected reprise of one of tenniss great rivalries will be their ninth meeting in a major final, the most between any two players in the post-1968 Open era.Nadal has won six of their major finals, with Federers last victory in 2007. But the Spaniard said past results were irrelevant. Its a different match, different moment for both of us. I think this match is completely different than what happened before, he said. Its special. We have not been there in that situation for a while, so that makes the match different.I really dont think about what happened in the past. I think the player who plays better is going to be the winner. The pair last contested a Grand Slam final at Roland Garros three years ago. They also met in the Australian Open semi-finals in 2014, with Nadal winning each time. Now its a different time. A lot of time has gone by, Federer said. I know this court allows me to play a certain game against Rafa that I cannot do on centre court at the French Open.It will be Federers sixth Australian Open final and his 28th Grand Slam decider in total, and caps a marvellous comeback after the second half of last season was wiped out by a knee injury. He has thrilled his many fans with his revival, having not figured in a Grand Slam final since the 2015 US Open. This is the last one (match) so I will leave it all out here in Australia and if I cannot walk for another five months I will give it all I have, Federer said.Federer can become the first man to win five or more titles at three Grand Slam events, while Nadal stands to become the only man in the Open era to win all the majors at least twice.

Cricket: South Africa could get rid of coach Domingo soon

Posted:

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AFP) - South Africa coach Russell Domingo could be nearing the end of his tenure after Cricket South Africa announced on Saturday it was about to start the search for a coach to take charge after his contract ends in August.Domingo, who was appointed in 2013 after the surprise decision of Gary Kirsten to step down, has had two extensions of his contract. He was initially appointed to take South Africa through to the 2015 World Cup but before the tournament this was extended to April 2016. The latest extension is until the end of a Test tour of England in August. But it seems no further extensions are contemplated.According to the last paragraph of a statement following a board meeting, the board of directors resolved to commence the recruitment process for the appointment of a Proteas head coach to take charge after the tour to the UK until after the 2019 edition of the ICC World Cup.Asked for clarification, a CSA spokesman said Domingo could apply if he wanted to continue. In a recent press conference Domingo said he was planning his career one series at a time.Domingos position looked shaky last year after South Africa lost successive Test series against India and England, then failed in the World Twenty20.But the team has achieved good results in both Tests and one-day matches since then.

Cricket: Scorchers win Australia's Big Bash final

Posted:

PERTH, Australia (AFP) - Michael Klinger smashed an unbeaten 71 off 49 balls to steer the Perth Scorchers to a crushing nine-wicket win over the Sydney Sixers in Australias Twenty20 Big Bash League final in Perth on Saturday.Klinger hammered five fours and five sixes in the Scorchers 144 for one to easily overhaul the Sixers 141 for nine with 25 balls to spare. It was the Scorchers third title in six BBL seasons in another dominant campaign.Englishman Ian Bell was at the wicket with Klinger when the winning runs were hit and remained 31 not out off 25 balls.Sam Whiteman gave Justin Langers Scorchers a flying start with 41 off 21 balls with five fours and three sixes until he was stumped by Brad Haddin off Test off-spinner Nathan Lyon in the eighth over. Some times the risks come off. 140 can be a tricky target, Klinger said.We just thought that well come out here and take the game away. Whiteman was unbelievable in the first three-four overs, but our bowlers set this up for us.Pacemen Jhye Richardson and England import Tim Bresnan set up the crushing victory with three wickets each in the Sixers struggling innings.Richardson took three for 30 and had a hand in a run-out, while Bresnan chipped in with three for 40.Former Australia Test fast bowler Mitchell Johnson had another influential bowling spell with one for 13 off four overs after taking three for three in the semi-final win over the Melbourne Stars.Johnson said he thoroughly enjoyed playing in the BBL but had no thoughts of breaking his retirement to play international T20 cricket.Pretty awesome. It brings back old memories. The last two games have been amazing, Johnson said. You always think about coming out of retirement. Playing here, I had fun, but I dont think I will play international cricket again.Thats done and dusted. Im just enjoying playing here.Only Haddin with 38 off 25 balls and South African Johann Botha with 32 off 25 balls offered any resistance for the Sixers, who crumbled to 80 for six in the first 12 overs. The Scorchers have now won the BBL title in 2013/14, 2014/15 and this season and lost in two other finals, while the Sixers, who were the inaugural season champions, have now lost in two other finals.Cricket Australia said it will increase the number of games next season as it looks to capitalise on huge turnouts at matches. The Big Bash League has drawn huge crowds across Australia over the past few weeks and CA said it plans to add another eight matches to the competition.More than one million spectators attended matches this season, while the league has attracted an average television viewership of more than a million each night, CA said.

Cricket: Parnell, Tahir shine in South Africa ODI win

Posted:

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AFP) - Wayne Parnell and Imran Tahir took three wickets each to set up a comfortable eight-wicket win for South Africa in the first one-day international at St Georges Park on Saturday.Sri Lanka struggled to 181 all out, with Kusal Mendis the only batsman to shine for the tourists, making 62.Left-arm seamer Parnell took three for 48 while leg-spinner Tahir showed superb control in a strong westerly wind, taking three for 26.Today was a little more special for me, said man of the match Tahir. It is my wedding anniversary and this is absolutely for my wife. She asked me to take five wickets and win man of the match. I didnt take five wickets but I am very happy with my performance.Hashim Amla made 57 and Faf du Plessis 55 not out as South Africa cruised to victory with 15.4 overs to spare.Parnell plunged Sri Lanka into early trouble by taking wickets with the first balls of the second and fourth overs after South African captain AB de Villiers won the toss and decided to bowl.Although Dinesh Chandimal and Mendis put on 72 for the third wicket, Tahir ripped the heart out of the middle order, taking three wickets in four overs. It was a great bowling performance which put them on the back foot, said De Villiers. The new ball bowlers bowled with a lot of intensity up front, which is exactly what we want from them, and Immy (Tahir) was a great impact bowler in the middle overs again.De Villiers praised Amla and Quinton de Kock (34), who put on 71 for South Africas first wicket.Although Sri Lankas total was well below par, it was still a tricky target on a pitch which was slow, two-paced and kept really low.It was more like Sri Lankan conditions and their spinners could have caused some problems. But Quinton and Hash got us off to a great start, which made it easy for Faf and me, said De Villiers, who made 30 not out.Sri Lankan captain Upul Tharanga was disappointed. Although Dinesh and Mendis had a partnership, we never picked up from losing early wickets, he said. It was a slow pitch but our spinners did not control the ball much. We need to improve in batting and bowling.Niroshan Dickwella, man of the series in Sri Lankas Twenty20 triumph, made only one before he went back on his stumps and was leg before wicket to Parnell. New cap Sandun Weerakkody slashed at the first ball of Parnells next over and was caught at first slip for five.Mendis, who had made only 87 runs in seven innings since hitting 58 in the second innings of the first Test at the same venue last month, hit ten boundaries in his 94-ball innings. His first seven scoring strokes were fours, mainly struck fluently on the off side.
