Golf: Thomas holds off Matsuyama for Tournament of Champions title

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Justin Thomas held off red-hot Hideki Matsuyama to win his third USPGA Tour title on Sunday with a final-round 69 at the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii.Thomass four-under par effort gave him a 22-under total of 270 and a three-shot win over Japans Matsuyama -- who arrived in Hawaii having won four of his prior five tournaments worldwide.Thomas was, in fact, the only man to beat Matsuyama in that span, at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia in October. But the 23-year-old American had to survive some tense moments on the back nine to again best Matsuyama, who started the day two behind Thomas and carded an three-under 70 for 273.Former world number one and defending champion Jordan Spieth matched the best round of the tournament with a final-round 65, heading a trio sharing third on 276 alongside Pat Perez, who carded a 67, and Ryan Moore, who posted a 71.It was a further stroke back to US Open champion Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Brendan Steele.Thomas was rolling with three birdies on the front nine. After a bogey at 10, and birdies at 11 and 13, he grabbed a five-stroke lead over Matsuyama at 22-under.But Matsuyama narrowed the gap with a remarkable eagle at the par-four 14th, where his flop shot from 60 feet off the green found the hole.Things got even more tense at 15, where Thomas hit out of the fairway into dense vegetation in a hazard en route to a double-bogey seven that sliced his lead to one stroke as Matsuyama parred the par-five from almost the same spot in the fairway.Matsuyama had a 10-foot birdie putt to move into a tie for the lead at 16, but left it inches short. And at 17 he three-putted for bogey as Thomas rolled in a three-footer for birdie to rebuild his lead before they both birdied Kapaluas par-five 18th.Its a great feeling, said Thomas, whose victory in the elite 32-man event for last seasons title winners was his first tour title on US soil after his back-to-back CIMB Classic wins.I obviously stumbled a bit more than I would have liked on some of those holes, but I think it really shows where my games at right now.I stuck it out to still get it done.Spieth, who started the day in 19th, 10 shots off the pace, had eight birdies in his sparkling eight-under effort, including four in a row starting at the 12th.Very, very satisfying, he said. To come back, fire a strong one today ... I certainly take a lot of confidence off this round going into next week.World number one Jason Day, back in action this week after three months off rehabbing a troublesome back, had his ups and downs but finished on a high note with an eagle to cap his three-under 70. He finished tied for 13th on 279.Although he said he always tees it up expecting to win, he said there were positives to take away.I didnt have anything in the back of my mind that my back was going to go out this week, he said The back held up.

Football: Ronaldo tipped for 2016 FIFA award

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Following his success in Ballon dOr, the Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is set to add another garland -- the Best FIFA Mens Player -- on Monday in Zurich. After Champions League and Euro 2016 success for club and country last year, Ronaldo is the overwhelming favourite for yet another accolade for his bulging trophy cabinet. It could well be a double celebration for Real, with their manager Zinedine Zidane hoping to land the coaches title having led the merengues to European Cup glory -- 14 years after doing so as a player. Last year, FIFA ended its six-year collaboration with magazine France Football for the Ballon dOr award and is now to unveil its own brand new Best distinction. In accordance with the pizzazz such a star-studded occasion demands, US actress Eva Longoria will host the ceremony aided by German broadcast host Marco Schreyl. With his Ballon dOr safely tucked away after his third Champions League title, thanks in major part to his 16 goals in 12 games, as well as Portugals Euro 2016 success - the countrys first major crown -- CR7 is seen as a shoe-in for the mens new FIFA title. About the only downside for the former Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon star was the fact he was off the pitch when Portugal sealed their win over France, having been stretchered off with injury in the first half in tears. He watched Eders extra-time winner from the bench.Ronaldo himself acknowledged to sports daily Marca late last year that it was a fantastic season, indeed perhaps my best on an individual and team level. His achievements will almost certainly see him once again shut out longtime rival Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrids French striker Antoine Griezmann for the FIFA award. His Euro 2016 final injury aside, the only other blip of sorts for Ronaldo, 31, was the fact he was named in the Football Leaks financial scandal. He and his entourage have strenuously denied claims that he has illegally stashed some 150 million euros in offshore tax havens and Swiss bank accounts. But it unlikely that issue will trouble the national coaches and skippers and journalists called upon to seal their FIFA choice.Zidane, meanwhile, will face challenges from Claudio Ranieri, surprise English Premier League winner with Leicester, and Portugal boss Fernando Santos for the top coach award.Zizou acknowledges he is still a novice as coach -- having landed the top job at the Bernabeu on replacing the sacked Rafa Benitez mid-season.But he promptly secured glory in Europe and added the European Super Cup and World Club Cup for good measure -- not bad going for a debutant.Ranieri, meanwhile, secured Leicesters first league crown against all the odds in a success that stunned the sporting worldZidane, 44, modestly says he does not expect to win.It would be normal to give it to someone else -- Ive just started as coach, he notes. Its all new for me. I have to keep working.

Messi scores a late goal to secure a point for Barcelona

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelonas poor start to 2017 continued as they lost further ground on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga despite a sensational last minute Lionel Messi free-kick salvaging a 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Sunday. The Spanish champions lost their opening game of the year at Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey on Thursday and now trail Real by five points having also played a game more.Italian forward Nicola Sansone looked to have handed Villarreal a first win over Barca since 2008, but Messis late intervention denied the hosts on the day they announced a sponsorship deal to rename El Madrigal the Ceramics Stadium.A draw leaves Villarreal still in fifth, a point adrift of Atletico Madrid in the final Champions League place.Barca dominated possession throughout, but struggled to create clear-cut chances against the tightest defence in La Liga.Indeed it was the hosts who enjoyed the best opportunity of the opening half when former Barca midfielder Jonathan dos Santos blasted over when unmarked at the back post from a flowing counter-attack.Messi came close in unusual fashion as his thumping header from a corner was tipped over by Sergio Asenjo before Luis Suarezs fiercely hit drive was also too close to the Villarreal keeper.Another Villarreal counter-attack caught the Spanish champions cold at the start of the second-half as Alexandre Patos perfectly weighted pass picked out Sansone and his effort back across goal nestled in the far corner.Barca had a fine chance to immediately respond when a quickly taken Messi free-kick freed Neymar inside the area, but again the Brazilians effort lacked the power or accuracy to unduly trouble Asenjo. The visitors had huge claims for a penalty waved away when Villarreal captain Bruno deflected Messis effort over with an outstretched hand and seconds later Messi smashed the inside the post with a fine effort from the edge of the box.The controversial penalty calls were evened up as referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva was also unmoved when Sansones shot struck Javier Mascheranos hand inside the Barca box.And Messi finally broke Villarreals resistence as he was fouled on th edge of the area and stepped up to arrow a free-kick perfectly into the top corner.Villarreal ended with 10 men as Jaume Costa saw a second yellow card deep into stoppage time, but there was barely time to restart the game before blew for full-time and arguably brought the curtain down on Barcas title defence.Elsewhere, Celta Vigo moved into the top half of the table as Iago Aspas moved level with Cristiano Ronaldo on 11 La Liga goals for the season in a 3-1 win over Malaga.Athletic Bilbao remain seventh after being held 0-0 in a Basque derby at home to Alaves. And Real Betis moved nine points clear of the relegation zone thanks to a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Leganes.

Assad says victory in sight after Aleppo 'tipping point'

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with French media to be aired Monday that his forces are on the road to victory after recapturing the key city of Aleppo last month. We dont consider it (retaking Aleppo from the rebels) as a victory. The victory will be when you get rid of all the terrorists, Assad said in the interview with France Info, LCP and RTL television. But its a tipping point in the course of the war and it is on the way to victory, he said in excerpts provided by RTL.It was his first interview with French media since the December 22 recapture of the rebel-held east of Aleppo, which had been under siege for months.Rebel forces, who seized eastern districts of the city in 2012, agreed to withdraw after a month-long army offensive that drove them from more than 90 percent of their former territory. The loss of east Aleppo was the biggest blow to Syrias rebel movement in the nearly six-year conflict, which has killed more than 310,000 people. The violence has displaced more than half the countrys population and caused massive destruction.Asked about heavy bombing raids that ravaged the city and claimed large numbers of civilian lives, Assad said, in excerpts provided by France Info: But you have to liberate, and this is the price sometimes. He added: But at the end, the people are liberated from the terrorists -- Assads term for all fighters opposed to his rule.Of course its very painful for us as Syrians to see any part of our country destroyed, or to see any bloodshed anywhere, he said, adding: Every war is bad.The Syrian president asked, Is it better to leave (civilians) under their (rebels) supervision, under their oppression, by beheading, by killing?Earlier Sunday in Damascus, Assad told visiting French lawmakers that he was optimistic about new peace talks planned for later this month in Kazakhstan. The talks in Astana are being organised by Syrias allies Russia and Iran and rebel backer Turkey, following the imposition on December 30 of a fragile Syria-wide ceasefire. One of the visiting French lawmakers, Thierry Mariani, said Assad also declared himself willing to negotiate with nearly 100 rebel groups fighting against his government, excluding jihadist organisations.Assad said he was optimistic and ready for reconciliation with them on the condition that they lay down their arms, Mariani said. And he said the Syrian leader dismissed accusations of war crimes by his forces by saying that no wars were clean. There were probably mistakes on the part of the government that Assad said he would condemn and regret, Mariani said.Turkey has suggested the Astana talks could be convened around the last week of January. On the ground, meanwhile, a massive tanker truck bomb ripped through a market in the rebel-held Syrian town of Azaz on Saturday, killing 48 people and wounding dozens near the Turkish border. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 14 rebels were among the dead, but most of those killed were civilians, including five religious judges belonging to various rebel factions. The Islamic State group is suspected of being behind that attack.

Iraq forces in Mosul punch to Tigris for first time

Posted:

ARBIL (AFP) - Iraqi forces battling jihadists in Mosul reached the Tigris River that divides the city Sunday, a key step and a first since the launch of a huge operation in mid-October.The Islamic State group was on the back foot in Mosul after a week of significant gains for Iraqi forces but pressed a deadly campaign of bombings in Baghdad, where two more attacks killed 18 people.Elite Counter-Terrorism Forces (CTS) took control of the eastern end of the southernmost bridge in Mosul, a morale-booster in a 12-week-old operation that has encountered many difficulties.CTS forces reached the Tigris River from the eastern (side) of the fourth bridge, Sabah al-Noman told AFP. The news was also confirmed by Iraqi army Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah.Tens of thousands of Iraqi forces launched an offensive on October 17 to retake Mosul, the last major urban centre in Iraq still controlled by the group that seized around a third of the country in 2014.Several areas around the city, Iraqs second largest, were swiftly reconquered, but the elite forces that pushed into the streets of Mosul itself have faced stiffer than expected resistance. In late December, the federal advance inside the city had slowed to a crawl but a fresh coordination effort between CTS and other forces gave fresh impetus to the operation.Iraqi forces, backed by increased support from the US-led coalition that has carried out the bulk of air strikes against IS and deployed military advisers on the ground, made rapid progress in the first week of 2017.Their push to the banks of the Tigris River on Sunday marks a symbolic and tactical victory for the Iraqi forces but they have much work left to do to take full control of Mosuls eastern side.Having eyes on the river should further complicate ISs already reduced ability to resupply the eastern front with fighters and weapons from the west bank, which it still firmly controls.Commanders had predicted when the operation, Iraqs largest in years, was launched nearly three months ago that the eastern side of the city would be easier to retake. But die-hard jihadist fighters, estimated at around 5,000 to 7,000 before the start of the offensive, fought back with sniper fire, booby-traps and a seemingly endless supply of suicide car bombs. The continued presence in the city of hundreds of thousands of civilians -- either forced to stay by IS or reluctant to leave their homes for crowded and cold displacement camps -- has impeded the federal advance.Baghdad and partnering aid organisations had predicted an exodus of civilians in the first weeks of the operation but the flux of fleeing Mosul residents was more limited than expected.According to the United Nations, more than 135,000 people have been displaced since the start of the operation to retake Mosul, a significant proportion of them from outlying areas.Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had promised that his forces would rid Iraq of IS by the end of 2016 but later said that eliminating the jihadists would take several more months. The western bank of the city is slightly smaller than the east but more densely-populated and includes neighbourhoods that are seen as bastions of support for the Islamic State group. The jihadists, vastly outnumbered and outgunned in Mosul by federal forces and their allies, have launched a number of diversionary attacks over the past three months. They also appear to have ramped up suicide bomb attacks in the capital, where at least 18 people were killed in two separate blasts near markets on Sunday. The first attack struck the main wholesale vegetable market in Baghdad, which lies in the frequently-targeted, overwhelmingly Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City.A soldier at the gate of Jamila market opened fire on a suicide car bomb after noticing a suspect vehicle but the terrorist blew up his car, interior ministry spokesman Saad Maan said.At least 12 people died in the explosion while another six Iraqis were killed in a second attack at a market in the Baladiyat area, security and hospital officials said. The explosions were the latest in a string of attacks that have left close to 100 people dead since New Years Eve.

68 killed in battles near Yemen's strategic strait

Posted:

ADEN (AFP) - At least 68 fighters have been killed in two days of fierce battles between Yemeni forces and Shiite Huthi rebels near the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait, military officials said Sunday.Government forces launched an assault Saturday, recapturing the coastal Dhubab district, just 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of Bab al-Mandab which links the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.Since then at least 55 Huthis have been killed in fighting and 72 others wounded, military and medical sources said.Clashes since Saturday have also killed 13 loyalists forces, including an army general, Brigadier-General Abdul Aziz al-Majidi, a loyalist commander, told AFP.They said fighting was still underway Sunday as loyalist forces were trying to retake from the rebels a key military base in the Dhubab region.Al-Omari base is located in a mountainous region that overlooks the coastal road linking Bab al-Mandab region to Dhubab, and opens the way to rebel-held Hudaida port on the Red Sea.The Huthis, and allied fighters, on Sunday fired two ballistic missiles that were intercepted by the Saudi-led coalition that backs the Yemen government, a loyalist military source said.Landmines planted by the rebels had slowed down the advance of government forces, military officials said. The government and its allies in the Saudi-led coalition recaptured Bab al-Mandab strait in October 2015, pushing the Iran-backed rebels further north. But the rebels still control nearly all of Yemens Red Sea coast to the north, posing what the coalition says is a threat to international shipping. In September and October, two US warships and a United Arab Emirates vessel contracted to the coalition were targeted by missile fire from rebel-held territory.Pro-government troops seized Dhubab in early October 2015, but the rebels managed to recapture the area in February. The Yemeni conflict has killed more than 7,000 people since the coalitions military intervention began in March 2015, according to the United Nations. Also on Sunday, a drone likely carried out by US forces, killed a local Al-Qaeda leader in the central province of Baida, a security source said.

Truck-ramming attack kills four Israeli soldiers

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - A Palestinian rammed a truck into a group of Israeli soldiers visiting a popular tourist spot in Jerusalem on Sunday, killing four and wounding 17 others, authorities said. The driver was also killed at the location overlooking holy sites such as the Dome of the Rock and providing one of the most spectacular views of Jerusalem. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who visited the scene said in a statement: We know the identity of the assailant, who according to all indications supported IS (Islamic State group).Palestinian security officials said the driver was a Palestinian in his late 20s from east Jerusalems Jabal Mukaber neighbourhood. Palestinian media named him as Fadi Al-Qanbar.Five members of his family were arrested for questioning, Israeli police said.Chaos broke out at the scene when the truck ploughed through the crowd, as hundreds of soldiers took part in a tour about the history of Jerusalem.A lone terrorist drove his truck into a group of soldiers standing on the side of the road, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. They got off the bus, and as they were getting off the bus and getting organised, he took advantage.Reacting to claims that soldiers were slow to react, the army released a video of a soldier saying he shot after realising it was not an accident. An investigation is underway but this attack lasted several seconds and once the soldiers understood that it was an attack, they fired in the direction of the vehicle, said army spokesman Moti Almoz.Multiple bullet holes could be seen in the windshield of the truck. The military identified the victims as three female soldiers -- Yael Yekoutiel, Shir Hadjaj, Shira Tzour -- and one male, Erez Auerbach. They were all in their 20s.A video shared online showed a flatbed truck with a crane in the rear drive through a group of soldiers standing next to a bus.The driver then pulls off to the side and tries to reverse back towards where the soldiers were hit before the truck eventually comes to a stop.Visitors, including soldiers, are seen running for cover.I heard my soldiers screaming and shouting, said one of the tour guides, Lea Schreiber. I saw a truck that went on the side of the road. Soldiers starting shooting... There were orders and screaming everywhere. They told them to hide behind the wall because there was fear of another attack.Fawzi Barhum, a spokesman for Islamist movement Hamas, called the attack heroic and brave.Rosenfeld said it was not yet clear if the attack had been planned earlier or was spontaneous. It occurred on the fringes of the Armon Hanatziv Jewish settlement and east Jerusalems Jabal Mukaber, near UN headquarters at a spot leading to a promenade with picturesque views.France and the European Union condemned the attack, as did the UN envoy for the Middle East peace process, Nickolay Mladenov. It is reprehensible that some choose to glorify such acts which undermine the possibility of a peaceful future for both Palestinians and Israelis, he said. There is nothing heroic in such actions.A wave of Palestinian knife, gun and car-ramming attacks broke out in October 2015, but the violence had greatly subsided in recent months.Since October 2015, 247 Palestinians, 40 Israelis, two Americans, a Jordanian, an Eritrean and a Sudanese have been killed, according to an AFP count. Most of the Palestinians killed were carrying out attacks, according to Israeli authorities. Others were shot dead during protests or clashes, while some died in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip. Many analysts say Palestinian frustration with the Israeli occupation and settlement-building in the West Bank, comatose peace efforts and their own fractured leadership have helped feed the unrest.Israel says incitement by Palestinian leaders and media is a leading cause. The status of Jerusalem is one of the most difficult issues in the conflict. The Palestinians see east Jerusalem, which Israel occupied in 1967 and later annexed, as the capital of their future state while Israel views the whole city as its capital.
