Kane scores hat-trick to lift Spurs to second place in table

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - New father Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as Tottenham Hotspur crushed West Bromwich Albion 4-0 on Saturday to climb to second place in the Premier League table.Kanes hat-trick, which took his season tally to 15 goals, capped an outstanding performance that ensured Mauricio Pochettinos side maintained the standards set in last weeks defeat of leaders Chelsea. The result was never in doubt from the moment Kane put Spurs ahead in the 12th minute, with a Gareth McAuley own goal doubling the score before two more Kane goals late in the second half completed the win.Tottenham have now won six league games in a row, while Kanes goals were the perfect way for the striker to mark the birth of his first child, daughter Ivy Jane, who arrived last weekend. The only downside for Spurs manager Pochettino at White Hart Lane was the loss of Jan Vertonghen to a potentially serious ankle injury midway through the second half, the centre-back limping off in tears. This performance was in marked contrast to the corresponding fixture last April, when a 1-1 draw heralded the beginning of the end of Spurs bid to pip eventual champions Leicester City to the title.Nine months on, Pochettinos side are on the rise and this display confirmed just how far they have come since their disappointing collapse at the end of last season. An early left-wing cross from Danny Rose flashed in front of Ben Fosters goal and should have been turned home by Kane, who succeeded only in deflecting the ball beyond the far post.It was clear, however, that that miss was never going to prove costly and the England striker quickly made amends by firing his side ahead after a slick build-up that summed up Spurs vibrant display.Mousa Dembele, excellent throughout, was involved before Victor Wanyama played the ball into the feet of Christian Eriksen, who laid a short pass into the path of Kane on the edge of the West Brom box.The forward turned quickly and with Foster advancing, lifted the ball over the goalkeeper and in off the left-hand post.Kane should have added a second goal 12 minutes later when he produced a diving header from Wanyamas cross, only for Fosters outstanding, point-blank save to keep his side in the game. But the reprieve was brief as Tottenhams relentless pressure produced a second goal within a minute. This time Foster had no chance, with Eriksens low shot from the edge of the area taking two deflections -- the most significant off McAuley -- to leave the visiting goalkeeper wrong-footed.From that point, a Tottenham victory was inevitable and it took another fine save from Foster to prevent Kane from confirming his sides dominance with a left-foot shot that was diverted onto the post.Albion manager Tony Pulis reshaped his side at the interval, starting the second period in a 3-4-3 formation that mirrored Spurs line-up.The switch appeared to work, with West Brom winger Matt Phillips firing narrowly wide with his sides first meaningful effort on Hugo Lloriss goal. But the visitors response was short-lived as Tottenham quickly regained control, although they once again found Foster a formidable obstacle as they attempted to add to their lead. The third goal eventually came in the 77th minute when Kane acrobatically turned home Kyle Walkers right-wing cross after the hapless McAuley had been caught in possession.Kane completed his hat-trick five minutes later when he exchanged passes with Alli, who played in his England team-mate with a superb, scooped pass, and the forward beat Foster with a close-range volley.

Tennis: 'Underdog' Federer admits fear of unknown

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Roger Federer said he was clearly an underdog for the Australian Open and admitted to some uncharacteristic nerves on Saturday as he pondered a treacherous draw. The 35-year-old, back from a six-month injury lay-off, is seeded 17th at Melbourne Park, complicating his attempt for a record-extending 18th Grand Slam title. Two days from the start of the tournament, Federer was still in the dark about his first-round opponent as the qualifying rounds continued. Is it a lefty, a righty? Its a big deal. Is he a big server, a grinder? said the Swiss.A bit of an unknown here the first round because thats the part of the draw I care most about because of having not been playing.Federers path is strewn with hazards, as he faces potential matches with Tomas Berdych and Kei Nishikori before a possible quarter-final with world number one Andy Murray. Its a prospect to give even the ice-cool Swiss pause for thought as he tries to craft his comeback from the longest injury break of his career, prompted by knee problems.Federers absence raised inevitable questions about retirement, but he said he was delighted to be back in a Grand Slam draw -- even in the unaccustomed role of underdog.Yeah, why not (underdog) for a change? I mean, I prefer to be the favorite. Underdog is okay. Yeah, its fine, he said.As long as Im healthy and I feel like I can go four, five sets, I can go many matches in a row, then I think its going to be fun.He added: Its a great draw because Im in the draw. So for me Im super-pleased that I made it here, that I have an opportunity to win matches. How many remains to be seen. Im cautious myself. So, yeah, clearly an underdog this time around.Physical fitness could be a factor in what can be the most gruelling conditions of the year, with temperatures forecast to soar towards 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) next week.Federer has played only three singles matches since July, but he said he had been trying to simulate the endurance needed for five-set Grand Slam encounters in training.I trained as hard as I possibly could, so I will be ready for it. I did numerous sessions where I trained over two-and-a-half, three hours, he said.I feel Im ready. But, like I said, it is the unknown. Its the part that I can only know once Ive been there.Just walking on court will be a pleasure for the father of four, who said he had missed the atmosphere on tour during his time away from the court.I guess you do miss the matches at some point. You miss the feeling of winning, walking onto a stadium, seeing the guys, he said. You know, its like an extended family to some extent anyway. You walk around here... you see faces you havent seen in a while. Its just nice to see everybody again.

Tennis: 'Selfish' Serena says engagement hasn't sunk in

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - A glowing Serena Williams said shes so focused on trying to win another Grand Slam title she hasnt let her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian sink in.The American powerhouse broke the news of her impending nuptials with a poem in late December on her verified Reddit account, revealing that the 33-year-old went down on one knee during a trip to Rome. But as she attempts break Steffi Grafs Open era-record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles at Melbourne Park, Williams isnt allowing her personal life to interfere with her preparations.Ive said from the beginning, I just didnt want to think about it until after Australia because Grand Slams mean a lot to me, she said on Saturday. Its almost a little unreal right now because I havent taken it in. Im being rather selfish and focused on my career.Williams did say being engaged was really great, but she insisted tennis was her current priority as she sizes up a difficult first-round clash against Switzerlands Belinda Bencic -- in forecast sweltering heat.I wont allow it to sink in because Im so focused. Im really focused on training, cardio, all kinds of stuff, said the 35-year-old.Now Im on the road, already back at work. I dont want to get too happy because I want to stay focused.Seeded two, Williams, who lost the top world ranking to Angelique Kerber last year, has her work cut out if she is to go one better than Graf.If she gets past Bencic, she could then encounter either in-form Briton Johanna Konta, who won the lead-up Sydney International on Friday, or sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova in the quarter-finals.Williams has barely played since the US Open last September due to injury. Her build-up to the Australian Open was far from ideal when she was bundled out of the Auckland Classic last week in the second round.Despite the setback, the six-time winner remains confident.Ive been spending so much time on the court, she said of Melbourne Park. It feels really good to be back, just hitting on Rod Laver (Arena), hitting on all the stadiums, its a good feeling. I love it here.Bencic, a former world number seven who is coached by Martina Hingis mother Melanie Molitor, will be a big test. The Swiss starlet made the fourth round last year before injuries derailed her season and she has a 1-1 record with Williams, winning their last encounter in the Toronto semi-finals in 2015.Its never easy for me. So I always go out there, and all I can do is do my best, said Williams. I didnt come here to lose in the first round, or the second round, or at all.If I can play the way Ive been practising, it will be fine. I know shes been playing well, so it will be good for both of us.Despite her recent lack of time on court, nobody is writing off Williams, who is renowned for her fighting qualities. She entered the Australian Open last year under an injury cloud having played only a handful of matches, yet went on to make the final before a shock defeat to Kerber.Melbourne Park has been a happy hunting ground. She claimed her first Australian Open title way back in 2003, beating elder sister Venus in the final.

Football: Suarez, Messi keep Barca on Madrid's tail

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Luis Suarez scored twice and Lionel Messi continued his sensational form as Barcelona moved to within two points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid on Saturday with a 5-0 rout of Las Palmas.Madrid remain very much in pole position, though, with two games in hand, the first of which comes at third-placed Sevilla on Sunday.Suarez opened the scoring after just 14 minutes, but Barca had to wait until early in the second-half to double their lead when Messi scored for the seventh straight game. And Barca turned their domination into further goals as Suarezs second, Arda Turan and Aleix Vidals first goal for the club rounded off the scoring.Victory eased a growing sense of unease around the Camp Nou this week with divisions between the squad and the clubs board over ongoing talks to extend Messis contract beyond 2018.Suarez criticised Barca CEOs Oscar Graus claims that the club must show financial common sense in negotiating the Argentines new deal, that looks set to make him the worlds highest paid player.Meanwhile, on Friday, Pere Gratacos was sacked from his role as Barcas director of institutional relations with the Spanish football federation for claiming Messi wouldnt be as good without the help of his star teammates.Renewing Messis contract is indispensable to our club, Bartomeu told Catalan TV station TV3I always say to Barca fans to be calm. I am personally handling Leos renewal.I have spoken a bit with his team. We will speak when there is news to give. For now things simply have to run their course. As if giving Messi the chance to prove Gratacos wrong, Barca boss Luis Enrique surprisingly left out a number of star names with Neymar and Andres Iniesta left on the bench and Gerard Pique out his squad altogether amidst a busy January of La Liga and Copa del Rey action. However, unlike on many outings this season, Barcas understudies rose to the occasion.Portuguese international Andre Gomes has been much-criticised since his 35 million euro ($37 million) move from Valencia in July, but provided his first assist in a Barca shirt with a driven low cross that was swept home at the near post by Suarez. The club know what Leo wants, Suarez told BeIN Sports Spain. We are calm despite what has been said.Barca missed a host of chances to extend their lead before the break as Rafinha and Gomes fired off target with just Javi Varas in the Las Palmas goal to beat.Varas then produced a stunning stop when one-on-one with Messi. However, the keeper was at fault when the second did finally arrive seven minutes into the second-half as he spilt Rafinhas cross into the path of Messi to tap into an empty net to score his 27th goal in just 24 appearances this season.Suarez added his second of the afternoon with a tidy finish into the far corner just before the hour mark.Seconds later the Uruguayan should have sealed his hat-trick, but Turan slotted home the rebound after Varas denied Suarez as Barca struck three times in just six minutes.Suarez was handed a break for the final 20 minutes as he was replaced by Paco Alcacer and the former Valencia captain teed up Vidal to slot home from just inside the area for the fifth 10 minutes from time.Atletico Madrid remain four points behind Barcelona in fourth as they ground out a 1-0 win over Real Betis in a forgettable encounter at the Vicente Calderon.Argentine international Nico Gaitan got the only goal after just eight minutes as he stretched to turn home Sime Vrsaljkos deflected cross at the back post.

Tears as Muller grabs first title with Sydney win

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Luxembourg s Gilles Muller broke through for his first career ATP World Tour title with a straight sets win over Britain s Daniel Evans in the Sydney International final on Saturday.Left-hander Muller, 33, one of the Tour s biggest servers, finished too strongly for the 67th-ranked Evans, winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 in 88 minutes. He finally claimed a title after 17 years on the circuit with his victory continuing his impressive record of consistency in Sydney after reaching the semi-finals in the past two years.Muller at 34 was the highest-ranked player in the top 50 without a tournament title after losing in five finals, including two last season, both on grass in s-Hertogenbosch and Newport.Muller, who was handed his winner s trophy by Australian Grand Slam great Rod Laver, became emotional and broke down in tears during his victory speech at the presentation ceremony. What a night I ve waited a long time for this, he said.It just means so much to me to win this tournament in front of my wife and boys.Muller later told reporters: It means a lot. I was waiting a long time. I played my first final in 2004. We are in 2017 and I waited 13 years to win my first title. I m just very happy. For the past two or three years, it was probably my biggest goal to win a title. I always dreamed of that, and I was so close last year.So I was very scared and worried that I was going to be one of those players that maybe would never win a title.Everything that happened tonight was like in a movie. Rod Laver there, standing on centre court with the trophy, my kids in the stands, I can t ask for more.Evans saved two set points before the opening set went to a tiebreaker.Muller took the set with a forehand winner and a smash and then got a double-break to control the second set and cruise to victory.Evans, who knocked out the top seed Austria s Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals, was bidding to become the first British singles champion in Sydney since Tim Henman in 1997.He served too good. Obviously the first-set tiebreak was a big one, Evans said.It would have been tough for him to regain focus and go again if I d won the first set, but I didn t.He was good front runner. I couldn t get anywhere near his serve.

Chelsea thrash defending champions Leicester City 3-0

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Marcos Alonso proved an unexpected replacement for the absent Diego Costa as Chelsea won 3-0 at Leicester City on Saturday to consolidate their position atop the Premier League table.Costa, Chelseas top scorer, was missing after reportedly rowing with coaching staff about his fitness, but Spanish wing-back Alonsos double helped Antonio Contes side go seven points clear. If there are problems, I prefer to solve the problem in the changing room and not during the press conference, Conte said. If, and I repeat if, there are problems.Tottenham Hotspur climbed into second place after Harry Kane claimed a hat-trick in a 4-0 stroll against West Bromwich Albion, with Arsenal moving up to third after winning by the same scoreline at Swansea City.Chelseas 13-game winning run had been halted by a 2-0 defeat at Spurs on their previous league outing and preparations for the trip to Leicester were rocked by the Costa controversy.Asked to explain Costas absence, Conte would only say that the striker, who is reportedly the subject of an eye-watering offer from China, had been unable to train due to a back problem. But the Brazil-born Spain internationals absence was quickly forgotten as Eden Hazard teed up Alonso to sweep Chelsea ahead in the sixth minute at the King Power Stadium.Alonso struck six minutes into the second half as well, with a deflected shot, before Pedro Rodriguez headed in after Willian had been denied by Kasper Schmeichel.A good performance, because its not easy to come here, play the champions and win in this way, Conte told BT Sport. After the defeat to Spurs we started in the right way.It was Leicesters 10th defeat of the campaign and kept the champions in 15th place, five points above the relegation zone.Kane had earlier scored a stylish hat-trick as Tottenham pulled off a classy 4-0 demolition of West Brom at an appreciative White Hart Lane. The England striker, who became a father for the first time last weekend, struck three times and Gareth McAuley put through his own goal as Mauricio Pochettinos side recorded a sixth successive league win.It was wonderful football, said Spurs manager Pochettino.I think after Chelsea it was a big challenge to keep the momentum and show that we are mature enough to fight for big things and today was a very good example of that. The only low point for Spurs was an ankle injury that forced centre-back Jan Vertonghen off midway through the second half. Pochettino said the early signs looked very bad.Arsenal moved above Liverpool -- who visit arch rivals Manchester United on Sunday -- on goal difference after a pair of own goals helped them to victory at struggling Swansea.Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, slamming home his fifth goal in five games after Mesut Ozils header hit Alfie Mawson.Alex Iwobi drew own goals from Jack Cork and Kyle Naughton early in the second half before Alexis Sanchez sealed victory with a 73rd-minute volley that took his tally for the campaign to 14 goals. We were fortunate with the goals, but the chances were there, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who revealed Giroud had sustained an ankle injury. There are many good teams around us and everyone is doing well. We can only focus on our results and hope some go our way.It was a first home league game to forget for Swanseas new manager Paul Clement, whose team sank to the foot of the standings.Marco Silva had a more memorable league bow as Hull City manager, with Abel Hernandez scoring twice and Tyrone Mings putting through his own own goal as they came from behind to beat Bournemouth 3-1.Sunderland slipped below Hull to 19th place after a dispiriting 3-1 home defeat by Stoke City, for whom Marko Arnautovic scored twice and Peter Crouch headed in his 99th Premier League goal.West Ham United brushed off the absence of want-away star Dimitri Payet to sink Crystal Palace 3-0, goals by Sofiane Feghouli and Manuel Lanzini sandwiching a sensational Andy Carroll bicycle kick.Combative midfielder Joey Barton marked his return to Burnley, after an ill-fated stint at Scottish giants Rangers, by scoring a 78th-minute free-kick to secure a 1-0 home win over Southampton. There were emotional scenes at Vicarage Road as Watfords fans paid tribute to late former manager Graham Taylor, who died on Thursday aged 72, prior to their sides goalless draw with Middlesbrough.

Cricket: Crushing defeat my worst moment, says Sri Lanka skipper

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said after his team crashed to an innings defeat inside three days that their 3-0 series whitewash by South Africa was the worst loss of his captaincy career.Sri Lanka lost 16 wickets in a day as South Africas fast bowlers sealed victory by an innings and 118 runs on the third day of the third and final Test at the Wanderers Stadium on Saturday. The tourists were bowled out for 131 and 177 as South Africas four fast bowlers provided a relentless challenge on a pace-friendly pitch.I have been part of many defeats, but as a captain it is certainly the worst defeat, said Mathews.South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, meanwhile, hailed a dominant performance and said his long-term goal was to take South Africa back to the number one ranking in Test cricket. The series victory lifted them from fourth to third.Mathews said that he could not blame poor preparation for their failure to cope with fast, grassy pitches. We did our best by preparing pitches in Sri Lanka with lots of grass but unfortunately we couldnt handle it. We also prepared by practicing on bouncy surfaces. The Sri Lanka captain said he had no quibble with home teams preparing pitches that suited them. All teams want to win so you use home advantage to win games. Teams come to the sub-continent and they struggle. We beat Australia 3-0 but we need to find a way to win overseas as well. Maybe we need to play with more grass on our wickets at home.Mathews pointed out that it was a young and inexperienced team.Only three of our guys have played in South Africa before. We need to give these young players a chance. It is not easy to play in these conditions against four seamers of this calibre, he added.Du Plessis said South Africa had produced consistent cricket throughout the series. You expect in these conditions to be on top of Sri Lanka at times. For me is was about making sure that 90 or 95 percent of the time we can string together consistent performances and we did that with our batting, bowling and fielding.Du Plessis was unapologetic for asking for lively pitches.Especially when you play against sub-continent teams you want to make it uncomfortable for them because when you go there, like the tour of India (in 2015) there was not a lot of grass on those wickets. We wanted to take them out of their comfort zone. But they are a very young batting unit and they will learn from this and hopefully become better players.Looking ahead to a year which includes away series in New Zealand and England, followed by home fixtures against Bangladesh and India, Du Plessis said: We have clear goals. We have been goal-driven in the last six months and it has been very effective. We take it series by series, setting out our challenges and goals for specific series. We want to get back to number one, although it could take a bit of time with the number of games India are playing there. In a dismal day for the tourists, Sri Lanka were able to add only 51 runs to their overnight first innings total of 80 for four and seldom looked like providing sustained resistance in the second innings, despite a fighting 50 by opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne.South Africa new cap Duanne Olivier took five wickets for 57 runs in the match, while left-armer Wayne Parnell, in his first Test in three years, took six for 89.

Merkel warns Trump against protectionism

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Saturday against protectionist tendencies of US President-elect Donald Trump, citing lessons learned in the 2008 global financial crash and stressing the need to move forward together. My profound conviction is that there are more advantages... to moving forward together than when everyone resolves their problems for themselves. I am truly convinced of this, she told a press conference at a meeting of her CDU party.Asked if she believed protectionist tendencies by Trump could pose a threat, Merkel recalled the example of the 2008 global financial crisis, which came from the United States. As heads of state and government (of the G20), we said: We must resolve the problem facing us together, she said. And the response to overcome that financial crisis was not a response based on closing oneself off, but a response which called for cooperation, for common rules, for regulation of financial markets.I think this way worked, and naturally we are going to seek dialogue with the new American president, who will be inaugurated on January 20.On the campaign trail Trump notably threatened to take protectionist measures against Chinese and Mexican imports, and claimed a first success with a decision by US motor giant Ford not to build a new plant in Mexico.Trumps attitude has fuelled concern in Germany: on Thursday Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he was perplexed by Trump comparing the leak of a dossier of unsubstantiated allegations against him to something that could have happened in Nazi Germany.During the US campaign, Steinmeier was even more damning, saying the prospect of a Trump presidency was frightening for the world. He compared Trump to a hate preacher, saying he had much in common with fearmongers in Germanys right-wing populist AfD party and advocates of Britains exit from the EU.
