Tens of thousands in U.S. cities protest Trump immigration order

Posted:

WASHINGTON / NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people rallied in U.S. cities and at airports on Sunday to voice outrage over President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting entry into the country for travelers from seven Muslim-majority nations. In New York, Washington and Boston, a second wave of demonstrations followed spontaneous rallies that broke out at U.S. airports on Saturday as U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents began enforcing Trump’s directive. The protests spread westward as the day progressed. The order, which bars admission of Syrian refugees and suspends travel to the United States from Syria, Iraq, Iran and four other countries on national security grounds, has led to the detention or deportation of hundreds of people arriving at U.S. airports. One of the largest of Sunday’s protests took place at Battery Park in lower Manhattan, within sight of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, long a symbol of welcome to U.S. shores.Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York told the crowd that Trump’s order was un-American and ran counter to the country’s core values. What we are talking about here is life and death for so many people, the Senate Democratic leader said. I will not rest until these horrible orders are repealed.Demonstrators yell slogans during protest against the travel ban imposed by U.S. President Donald Trumps executive order, at Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, California, U.S., January 29, 2017. REUTERS/Ted SoquiThe march, estimated to have grown to about 10,000 people, later began heading to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office in lower Manhattan. In Washington, thousands rallied at Lafayette Square across from the White House, chanting: No hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here.It was the second straight weekend that Washington was the scene of protests. Last Saturday, hundreds of thousands of women participated in an anti-Trump rally and march, one of dozens staged across the country. On Sunday, many of the protesters left the White House area and marched along Pennsylvania Avenue, stopping at the Trump International Hotel where they shouted: Shame, shame, shame.A crowd that police estimated at 8,000 people eventually arrived at the steps of the U.S. Capitol, where a line of uniformed officers stood guard. As the crowd passed the Canadian Embassy en route to the Capitol, protesters chanted: Hey hey, ho ho, I wish our leader was Trudeau. It was a reference to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Saturday Twitter message affirming his country’s welcoming policy toward refugees.Trump defended the executive order in a statement on Sunday, saying the United States would resume issuing visas to all countries once secure policies were put in place over the next 90 days.People gather to pray in baggage claim during a protest against the travel ban imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order, at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Dallas, Texas, U.S. January 29, 2017. This is not about religion - this is about terror and keeping our country safe.‘NEVER AGAIN MEANS NEVER’Aria Grabowski, 30, of Washington, was carrying a sign that read: “Never again means never again for everyone.”Above the slogan was a photograph of Jewish refugees who fled Germany in 1939 on a ship that was turned away from Havana, Cuba, and forced to return to Europe. More than 250 people aboard the ship were eventually killed by the Nazis.About 200 protesters chanted on Sunday afternoon at Washington Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia near the U.S. capital.About the same number gathered at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, where anxious families awaited relatives detained for hours after flights from countries affected by the presidential order. At Los Angeles International Airport, hundreds of people had gathered to protest Trump’s order, as chants of refugees are welcome here echoed through the arrivals hall.Organizers estimated that more than 10,000 people packed Boston’s Copley Square to hear Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a vocal critic of Trump and a leader of the Democratic Party’s liberal wing, and other speakers.During the protests, dozens of Muslims, some of them kneeling on protest signs, bowed in prayer on rugs laid out on a grassy patch of ground in the square.Activists march to the US Capitol to protest President Donald Trump’s executive actions on immigration in Washington January 29, 2017. REUTERS/Aaron P. BernsteinIn Houston, which was already filling up with visitors for next Sunday’s Super Bowl, about 500 people marched through the downtown.Jennifer Fagen, 47, a sociology professor at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, said she hoped she did not lose her job for protesting.I’m Jewish, and it’s supposed to be ‘never again,’ Fagen said, referring to the Holocaust. Jews should be the first ones to defend Muslims, considering what has happened to us, and it seems it’s being repeated under Trump. At Detroit Metropolitan Airport, police cordoned off sections of terminal as up to 3,000 demonstrators chanted, No hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here.Among the demonstrators were Wail Aljirafi and his wife, Samyeh Zindani of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and their three children. We want them to feel that they’re always included, Zindani, a Yemeni-American, told Reuters.Demonstrators on the second day of anti-Donald Trump immigration ban protests inside Terminal 4 at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco, California, U.S., January 29, 2017. It makes me feel like I am not wanted here.

Police set up a perimeter around the mosque.A few dozen people were inside the Islamic Cultural Center when the shooting began just after 8:00 pm (0100 GMT Monday), CBC reported, citing its French-language service Radio-Canada.According to CBC, Quebec City Police Constable Etienne Doyon said at the time of the attack mostly men were gathered at the mosque for evening prayers.Quebec City map - AFPThe center’s director said at least five people were killed, but that information had not been confirmed by police, CBC said.According to witnesses cited by Radio-Canada, two men entered the center and opened fire on the people inside.Quebec’s prime minister, Philippe Couillard, said in a series of Twitter posts that the government was mobilized to ensure the security of the people of Quebec.Quebec categorically rejects this barbaric violence, he wrote. Solidarity with Quebec people of Muslim faith. The Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec, which is also known as the grand mosque of Quebec, had already been the target of hate: a pig’s head was left on the doorstep last June during the Muslim holy month of Ramazan. The attack comes as Canada has vowed to open its arms wide to Muslims and refugees after US President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration ban Friday sparked travel chaos and outrage around the world.Canada will offer temporary residence permits to people stranded in the country as a result of Trump’s order, the immigration ministry said Sunday.Let me assure those who may be stranded in Canada that I will use my authority as minister to provide them with temporary residency if needed as we have done in the past, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen said at a news conference.Trump has suspended the arrival of all refugees to the US for at least 120 days and barred entry for 90 days to people from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.Hussen, who is of Somali origin, did not condemn the US measure but stressed that Canada would continue to pursue an immigration policy based on compassion while at the same time protecting the security of its citizens. We welcome those fleeing persecution, terror and war, he said, echoing a welcoming Twitter post by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday.According to the latest Canadian census, from 2011, one out of five people in the country are foreign-born.Canada has welcomed more than 39,670 Syrian refugees between November 2015 and early January 2017, according to government figures.

Understrength Aussies restrict Black Caps to 286

Posted:

AUCKLAND (AFP) - Australia limited New Zealand to 286 runs in the first one-day international in Auckland on Monday, giving their understrength batting line-up an achievable target. The tourists suffered a blow before play even began when a back injury forced wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade out of a team already missing David Warner, Usman Khawaja and captain Steve Smith. Without his big-name scorers, stand-in captain Aaron Finch opted to give his pace attack a run after winning the toss. It paid dividends as New Zealand struggled for runs despite sunny conditions and the short boundaries at Eden Park.Nerves appeared to get the better of the Black Caps, who are desperate to avenge a 3-0 whitewash in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy last December.Opener Martin Guptill (61) was the only top-order batsman to fire, bringing up his half century off 47 balls. But he could not forge a big partnership as Tom Latham (7), Kane Williamson (24) and Ross Taylor (16) all went early. After Guptill was clean bowled by Marcus Stoinis, it was left to the middle order to offer resistance through Neil Brooms dogged 73 and typically fiesty 48 from 45 balls from Jimmy Neesham.Paceman Trent Boult added a welcome 16 runs at the death, although coach Mike Hesson would have hoped for a 300-plus target in the conditions. Medium pacer Stoinis was the best of the Australian bowlers, picking up three for 49 in his second ODI, including the prized scalps of Guptill and Williamson. While the tourists batting line-up is depleted, it still contains the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Shaun Marsh and should be capable of making 287.

Syrian army says retakes key rebel area near Damascus

Posted:

DAMASCUS (AFP) - The Syrian army said on Sunday that it had recaptured a flashpoint area from rebels near Damascus that supplies water to the capital.Wadi Barada had been the scene of fierce fighting in recent weeks between regime and rebel forces that tested a fragile nationwide truce and left millions in Damascus facing water shortages. Our armed forces... have accomplished their mission by restoring security and stability in the region of Wadi Barada, the army said in a statement carried by state television. The announcement came a day after the army entered the water pumping station in Wadi Barada for the first time in four years.Under a deal with the authorities, rebels can choose to stay in the area but hand over their weapons, or leave to the northern province of Idlib, last major bastion of the armed opposition.Hundreds of rebels began to leave Wada Barada on Sunday for Idlib, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. Around 5.5 million people in Damascus and its suburbs have been without water since fighting intensified in the Wadi Barada area in late December.Government forces have battled to regain control of Wadi Barada and the water installation at Ain al-Fijeh since rebels overran the area before Christmas.Damascus governor Alaa Ibrahim said Sunday that repair work had begun at the plant, adding that while damage to the facility was significant, he hoped mains water would resume to the capital soon.Earlier in January, residents agreed a truce with Syrian authorities to allow maintenance teams into the area, but the deal was called off and violence flared after a chief mediator between the two sides was murdered.More than 310,000 people have been killed since Syrias conflict broke out in March 2011 with anti-government protests that were brutally repressed. Many battlefronts have quietened since a nationwide ceasefire by regime backer Russia and opposition ally Turkey came into effect last month.

Merkel slams Trump travel ban, cites Geneva convention

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday slammed the restrictions on immigration imposed by US President Donald Trump, saying it was not justified to target people based on their background or religion. Her spokesman said Merkel had raised the issue in a telephone call with Trump on Saturday, reminding him of obligations under international human rights law.The chancellor regrets the entry ban imposed by the US government against refugees and nationals from certain countries, spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement. She is convinced that even in the necessarily resolute battle against terrorism it is not justified to place people from a certain origin or belief under general suspicion. The German government will now examine the consequences of the ban for German citizens with dual nationality, he added.Trump has caused consternation at home and abroad after signing a sweeping executive order on Friday suspending refugee arrivals and barring visas for travellers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for the next three months.A federal US judge on Saturday blocked part of the ban, ordering authorities to stop deporting refugees and other travellers stuck at US airports.Merkels condemnation comes a day after she spoke by phone with the new US president, when they discussed a range of issues from relations with Russia to the situation in the Middle East and NATO.Statements released by both sides after the call made no mention of the immigration ban, but Seibert on Sunday said Merkel had reminded the US billionaire of his human rights responsibilities. The Geneva Refugee Convention calls on the international community to take in war refugees on humanitarian grounds, he said. The chancellor stressed this policy in yesterdays phone call with the US president. In an interview with European media earlier this month, Trump said Merkel had made a catastrophic mistake in allowing a record number of migrants into Germany.More than a million people, including hundreds of thousands from war-torn Syria, have arrived in Germany since the chancellor opened the countrys doors to those fleeing conflict and persecution in 2015.Although the number of arrivals has slowed significantly in recent months, concern over the influx has fuelled support for the rightwing, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.Trump also came under fire Sunday from former European Parliament president Martin Schulz, who is running against Merkel for Germanys Social Democrats in a September general election.Trumps outrageous and dangerous comments about women, religious communities and minority groups were unacceptable, he said. But not all German politicians condemned the US leader. Bavarian state premier Horst Seehofer, a Merkel ally but also one of her strongest critics on immigration, praised Trump for sticking to his campaign pledges. He is implementing his campaign promises one by one with consistency and speed, Seehofer told Germanys bestselling Bild am Sonntag newspaper.Seehofer added however that he did not agree with all of Trumps decisions.

47 killed in Madagascar wedding crash: police

Posted:

ANTANANARIVO (AFP) - At least 47 people, including 10 children and a newly-wed couple, were killed when a truck carrying a wedding party and guests veered off the road and plunged into a river in Madagascar, police said Sunday.Police said the accident occurred early Saturday outside the town of Anjozorobe, around 90 kilometres (56 miles) from the capital. The truck was transporting passengers who had attended a wedding the day before. There were a total of 47 deaths, including 10 children and the newly-wedded couple, police spokesman Herilala Andrianatisaona told AFP. Twenty-two others were injured. The police have blamed the driver for taking too many passengers on a truck meant to carry only goods.According to our hypothesis, the truck driver, cognisant of the offence he was committing, which was transporting too many passengers in a vehicle meant for carrying goods, drove fast to escape traffic police checks. The driver lost control of his vehicle after having negotiated a wrong turn and ended up in the Mananara river, said Andrianatisaona. It is common practice for trucks to carry passengers on the large Indian Ocean island. They are usually capable of manoeuvring the islands bad roads.

Golf: Closing eagle lifts Rahm to first USPGA Tour title

Posted:

LA JOLLA (AFP) - Spains John Rahm claimed his first US PGA Tour title in style Sunday, rolling in an eagle putt from the fringe at the final hole to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.Rahm had broken free of the group tied for the lead at 10-under with a birdie at 17.At the par-five finishing hole on the South Course, he reached the back fringe with his second shot. Rahms effort from 60 feet snaked toward the hole and into the cup to cap a seven-under 65.His 13-under total of 275 proved to be enough for a three-shot victory as the bevy of golfers on his heels stalled late.Taiwans Pan Cheng Tsung and American Charles Howell shared second on 10-under 278.Englands Justin Rose closed with a two-under 70 to head a group on 279 alongside Americans Keegan Bradley (67), Pat Perez (70), Patrick Rodgers (72) and Tony Finau (71).Rahm, 22, had opened with a bogey, but after birdies at the third, fifth and 11th he put himself among the leaders with an eagle at the 13th.Thanks to 13, I got myself into it, said Rahm, whose second shot from a fairway bunker left him an 18-footer for eagle.Rahm said his thought process all day was far different from his mindset at last years National, where he finished third after leading or sharing the lead over the first two rounds. There, he said, he was second-guessing himself on the greens, afraid of over-hitting and costing himself pars.Today it was just completely different, Rahm said. I was just focused on making putts and hitting the right shots.Pan, a 25-year-old also chasing a first US tour title, had reached 10-under for the tournament after birdies at eight, nine and 10, but he couldnt find another birdie.Howell earned his share of second with a birdie at 18 that capped a 68 and put him in the clubhouse at 10-under before Rahms late-round heroics.J.J. Spaun was 10-under after a birdie at 17, but found the water en route to a double-bogey at 18, while Finaus challenge effectively ended with a bogey at 15.Brandt Snedeker, the defending champion gunning for a third title at Torrey Pines, just couldnt get much going even though hes an old hand at storming finishes on the picturesque course hugging the Pacific coast.Snedeker was seven shots adrift after 54 holes when he won in 2012, and rallied from six back last year. With a share of the 54-hole lead this time around, Snedeker shot a one-over 73 to join a group sharing ninth on 280.

Football: Monaco score in last minute to draw 1-1 against PSG

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Bernardo Silva struck an injury-time equaliser as Monaco salvaged a deserved point in a 1-1 draw at reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain to keep the visitors top of Ligue 1.Edinson Cavani scored his 21st league goal of the season with an 81st-minute penalty at the Parc des Princes, but Portugal international Silva fired home in stoppage time to thwart the hosts.Monaco moved back above Nice, who were 3-1 winners over Guingamp earlier on Sunday, on goal difference with Unai Emerys PSG remaining three points behind in their quest for a fifth straight title. Its not the best result, but its not the worst, said Emery. We will keep going as our objective is to win the title. Its difficult and today we had a good opportunity which we lost but there will be lots of chances.Julian Draxler returned from a calf problem in place of Angel Di Maria, who scored twice in Tuesdays 4-1 win at Bordeaux in the League Cup semi-finals, while Adrien Rabiot came in for the injured Marco Verratti in Paris.Monaco will meet PSG in the final in Lyon on April 1, and coach Leonardo Jardim recalled Valere Germain to partner Radamel Falcao in attack with Fabinho shaking off illness to start after coming off the bench in Wednesdays 1-0 defeat of Nancy. We always work to win, said Jardim. Perhaps after trailing 1-0, a draw is not a bad result but our idea was to come here and take three points.Fabinho forced PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp to tip over in a lively first half, albeit one with limited chances as Pep Guardiola scouted his sides upcoming opponents -- Manchester City are set to face Monaco in the Champions League last 16.Monaco keeper Danijel Subasic was called into action just before the break, first parrying a low drive from Lucas before scrambling to his feet to block a follow-up effort from Cavani. The visitors nearly caught PSG out within 30 seconds of the restart as Falcao spun inside the area before drawing a save from Trapp before Thomas Lemar drilled the rebound against Rabiot. However, Trapp hobbled off shortly after with an apparent hamstring problem sustained making a save from a swerving Lemar strike and was replaced by Alphonse Areola.A devilish low ball across the face of goal from Lemar then flashed between the legs of Jemerson and away to safety as Monaco looked the likelier to break the deadlock. But PSG were awarded a penalty when Djibril Sidibe tugged Draxler back as he sought to get on the end of a cross, with Cavani calmly converting to give the hosts the lead. But Monaco, who arrived in the capital averaging over three goals a game and unbeaten in their last seven trips to the Paris in the league, kept pressing and were rewarded when Silvas low drive from outside the area skipped past Areola.Earlier, Mario Balotelli secured a first win in four games for Nice as they ended a run of three successive draws with victory at home to Guingamp.Alassane Plea struck after 11 minutes to give Nice the lead at the Allianz Riviera and Jean-Michael Seri, back from Africa Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast, added a second before half-time.Jimmy Briand pulled a goal back for Guingamp on the hour but Balotelli, who was targeted with racial abuse in last weeks game at Bastia, sealed the win three minutes from time.Nice coach Lucien Favre admitted it had been a struggle at times and insisted his side would continue to take things step by step.We scored three goals at key times. Guingamp didnt have many chances but we sat back and suffered. We have to keep taking it match by match and we have a big one at Monaco next Saturday, said Favre.Lyon slumped to a 2-1 home defeat against Lille on Saturday as Yassine Benzia punished his former side with his first goals of the season, while Bafetimbi Gomis netted a hat-trick as Marseille thrashed Montpellier 5-1 on Friday.

White House hints at including Pakistan in immigration ban list

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus in an interview to the US media on Sunday said that President Donald Trump could issue additional executive orders expanding the list of Muslim-majority countries whose people are banned from immigrating to the United States.Reince Priebus said that Pakistan and other countries could be added to President Donald Trumps executive order banning travellers from seven nations linked to terrorism. Now you can point to other countries that have similar problems, like Pakistan and others. Perhaps, we need to take it further. But for now, immediate steps, pulling the band-aid off, is to do further vetting for people travelling in and out of those countries, the White House official added.Presently, visitors from Afghanistan and Pakistan are subject to extreme vetting in the United States, as per Trumps executive order. United States is home to thousands of Pakistani-Americans and Pakistani permanent residents. In the interview, Priebus justified the ban and stated that the Trump Administrations priority is to protect Americans. The seven-nations currently affected by Donald Trumps immigration ban are Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Libya.

Trump, Saudi king back 'rigorously' enforcing Iran nuclear deal

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trump and Saudi King Salman want to rigorously enforce the Iran nuclear deal, the White House said Sunday, despite the US leaders long opposition to the agreement. The pair, in a phone conversation, also spoke of the need to address Irans destabilizing regional activities, fight the spread of radical Islamic terrorism and establish safe zones in war-ravaged Syria and Yemen, the White House statement read.No further details were provided about those plans.Trump opposed the nuclear agreement signed by Israels arch-foe Iran and world powers, including the United States, in 2015 and has said he wants to undo it.Some of his key nominees have adopted an openly anti-Iran stance, including secretary of state candidate Rex Tillerson, who is seeking a complete revision of the accord.Israeli President Netanyahu said last month that there were many ways of undoing the Iran nuclear deal and that he would discuss that with Trump. But before he left office, former president Barack Obama warned against rowing back the pact, emphasizing its significant and concrete results. The deal places curbs on Tehrans nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.Tehran is a major foe of both Washington and Ryad. The Sunni majority Saudi kingdom is engaged in a power struggle with the Shiite country for dominance in the region.Trump and King Salman agreed on the importance of rigorously enforcing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and of addressing Irans destabilizing regional activities, the White House said.Trump also spoke by telephone with the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, committing to further strengthen cooperation on fighting radical Islamic terrorism, the White House said.It said the pair also discussed establishing safe zones for refugees displaced by conflict in the region, and the crown prince agreed to support this initiative.
