Suicide bomber kills at least eight in Damascus: monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - A suicide bomber killed at least eight people in a high-security district of Damascus on Thursday, a monitor said.Eight people died when a suicide bomber targeted Kafr Sousa in the southwest of the capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.At least four of them were soldiers, including a colonel, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said.State news agency SANA said at least seven people were killed when a suicide terrorist detonated an explosive belt close to a sports club there.Part of Kafr Sousa is a restricted zone that is home to ministers, senior security officials and intelligence headquarters, but the explosion took place elsewhere in the district.Footage from the scene of the attack broadcast on state television showed what appeared to be blast marks and blood splattered across a wall next to the wreckage of a car.Such attacks are rare in Damascus, a stronghold of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad which has been fighting rebels in Syria for nearly six years. The Syrian capital is sometimes the target of shelling by the opposition forces who hold areas on the outskirts. On December 16 a seven-year-old girl wearing an explosive belt blew herself up outside a police station in Midan district, wounding three police officers. Two blasts near state security agencies in Kafr Sousa in December 2011 killed more than 40 people and wounded more than 150, the Syrian government said at the time.

Football: Real late show sets record 40-game unbeaten run

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema struck deep into stoppage time as Real Madrid set a new Spanish record by extending their unbeaten run to 40 games in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Sevilla to progress to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday.Holding a 3-0 first leg lead, a Cristiano Ronaldo-less Real looked set for defeat for the first time in eight months as an own goal from Danilo and second-half strikes from Stefan Jovetic and Vicente Iborra saw Sevilla lead 3-1 inside the final 10 minutes. However, Sergio Ramoss penalty and substitute Benzema salvaged Madrids run, which now surpasses the 39-game unbeaten run set by Barcelona last season.Possibly they deserved to win the game, but we fought until the end, Real boss Zinedine Zidane told GolTV.They deserved more tonight, but the tie is two games and (over the two legs) it is logical that we go through. Both coaches named weakened sides with one eye on Sundays crunch top of the table La Liga clash between the two back at the Sanchez Pizjuan. However, it was Sevilla who settled first as they forced Madrid onto the back foot from the off.We had a lot of chances, at least 15 against a team of the stature of Madrid, said Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli. We were very close. Unfortunately, we couldnt take our chances to show the difference there was between the teams.Kiko Casilla had already been forced into two saves from Sergio Escudero and Joaquin Correa before Danilo powered a header into his own net after just 10 minutes. In the absence of Ronaldo and Benzema, Mariano Diaz was handed a rare start up front and nearly levelled in bizarre fashion as Sevilla keeper David Sorias clearance ricocheted off the striker and inches wide. However, most of the action in the first-half came at the other end as Casilla saved three times in quick succession from Wissam Ben Yedder and Luciano Vietto to prevent Real falling further behind.Toni Kroos fired inches wide just before the break, but the vital away goal the visitors needed to kill off the tie arrived in spectacular fashion three minutes into the second-half.Marco Asensio pounced on a clearance from a Sevilla corner on the edge of his own area and ran the length of the field barely challenged before slotting below Soria. That left Sevilla needing an unlikely four more goals to qualify, but they continued to pour forward as on-loan Inter Milan forward Jovetic marked his debut by volleying home Escuderos cross six minutes later.Sampaoli threw on frist-team regulars Samir Nasri and Vitolo in search of more goals. And Madrids record run appeared to be over when Iborra forced the ball home from close range to make it 3-1 with just 13 minutes remaining. However, Casemiro was adjudged to have been pushed inside the area by Matias Kranevitter five minutes later.Against his former club, Ramos showed remarkable calm to chip the resulting spot-kick down the middle of the goal. And Benzema provided the final sting in the tale three minutes into added time when he saw off two tired Sevilla challenges before firing low past Soria to seal a 6-3 aggregate win.Earlier, Celta Vigo and Eibar completed their progress into the last eight having already built-up three-goal first leg leads over Valencia and Osasuna respectively. They will be joined by Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Alaves, Alcorcon and Real Sociedad in Fridays draw.

Golf: McIlroy trails by one in South Africa

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Several superb second-nine recoveries helped world number two Rory McIlroy fire a first-round 67 in the South African Open Thursday to trail leaders Trevor Fisher junior and Keith Horne by one shot.Experimenting with clubs from three manufacturers after previous supplier Nike withdrew from the market, the Irishman struggled off the tee as his round drew to a close. Wayward drives found the rough on the final three holes at Glendower Golf Club in the eastern outskirts of Johannesburg, but McIlroy demonstrated his class with superb recovery shots. He scrambled pars at seven and nine -- the Irishman played the back nine first -- and birdied eight for a five-under round and a satisfactory seasonal debut. When the four-time major winner last changed clubs, necessitated by signing a multimillion-dollar deal with Nike four years ago, he initially battled to adapt.I was a bit adventurous on my second nine, admitted the 27-year-old, who hopes to replace Australian Jason Day at the top of the rankings by the end of January. As my round drew to a close, I had to scramble on a few holes and did my bit by salvaging some pars.I played well, giving myself birdie chances, he said after being followed by a large, appreciative gallery in hot, partly cloudy conditions.Carding a 67 really pleased me and, given a continuation of the same good weather, I can definitely achieve a lower score.McIlroy was satisfied with his new clubs after a seven-birdie, two-bogey round over a 6,942-metre (7,100-yard) parkland course full of water hazards. It is nice to card a 67 in my first competitive round with the new clubs. I am sure I will become accustomed to them. There will be some chopping and changing as I go along. After four pars from the 10th, the relaxed Irishman collected four consecutive birdies before completing his first nine with another par.On the second nine, he picked up another birdie and bogeyed two straight par-fours before making two more birdies.South African Fisher -- 442 places below McIlroy in the world rankings -- held the clubhouse lead on 66 for much of the day thanks to a purple eight-hole patch that delivered seven birdies. The lone slip by recently off-form Fisher was a bogey five on 11 at a club hosting the second oldest national golf championship after the British Open for the third year in a row.Fellow South African Horne, ranked 383, took a share of the lead late in the opening round after birdieing seven holes and dropping only one shot.Sharing second place with McIlroy were South Africans Thomas Aiken, Dean Burmester, who eagled the par-five 15th, and Jbe Kruger and Jordan Smith of England. The world number two was among five former major winners competing and fellow Irishman Darren Clarke carded a 70, as did 59-year-old Englishman Nick Faldo.South African Ernie Els shot a 74 and compatriot Retief Goosen an 80 that included a triple bogey and two double bogeys.Defending champion Brandon Stone of South Africa returned a disappointing four-bogey 74 having carded a practice-round 61 over the same course three days ago.

Obamas' dog, perhaps not taking transition well, bites visitor

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Blood was spilled Monday at the White House, but the culprits politics were not to blame: the Obamas dog Sunny bit a teenaged guest of the family, leaving a gash above her cheekbone, TMZ reported on Thursday. The 18-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was trying to pet the animal, a female Portuguese water dog, when it bit her, according to the TMZ website, which specializes in celebrity news. The presidents physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, deemed it necessary to close the wound with a few stitches. The young victim posted photos of her bleeding face on social networks. She is expected to be left with a slight scar, which TMZ said upset her -- though it will give her a good story to tell for years. The Obamas have two Portuguese water dogs, a breed generally known for its peaceful ways. The older of the two, named Bo after the presidents initials, carries the prestigious title of First Dog. Sunny, who at four is half Bos age, was named after her generally radiant disposition. The White House has not speculated on whether Sunny might have been perturbed by the packing going on as the Obamas prepare to turn over their home of eight years to Donald Trump.Trump, incidentally, will be the first president in 150 years to enter the White House without a pet of any sort -- not even a turtle -- according to the Washington Post.

Pakistan will face Australia in first ODI today

Posted:

BRISBANE (Agencies) - Momentum will be with Australia, the home side, when it locks horns with Pakistan in the first of five One-Day Internationals in Brisbane today (Friday). The match will start at 8:20am (PST).Coming off a 3-0 series sweep of Pakistan in the preceding Test series, Australia, the ICC Cricket World Cup defending champion, looks a formidable unit, having whitewashed New Zealand in the Chappell-Hadlee series before Pakistan came calling.Chris Lynn and Billy Stanlake, the Queenslanders, will make their ODI debuts in the game, Steven Smith confirmed on Thursday. Lynn will join the middle order while Stanlake will partner Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and James Faulkner in the pace department with Josh Hazlewood having been rested. The only point of worry for Australia in the ODIs against New Zealand was the form of Aaron Finch. The right-hand opener managed just 22 runs from three games and found no place in the squad for the Pakistan games. Travis Head will partner David Warner at the top of the batting order in Finch’s absence, leaving no place for Usman Khawaja in the XI. Adam Zampa has also been left out, and Glenn Maxwell, back in the side after 13 months, will be the lead spinner.Where Australia looks like a settled side, Pakistan has been rattled, not only by the outcome of the Tests, but also by the loss of two experienced players from the squad. Mohammad Irfan, the paceman, flew back after the death of his mother, while Sarfraz Ahmed, the wicketkeeper, made the journey back home because of his mothers ill health. In its last ODI assignment, Pakistan brushed West Indies aside 3-0 at home last year. But facing a No. 9-ranked side at home is a different prospect from challenging the top-ranked Australia in its backyard.Pakistan will draw confidence from its performance in the warm-up fixture against Cricket Australia XI earlier in the week, where it stamped its authority with an emphatic 196-run win, albeit against a side with no big names.Babar Azam, who top-scored in the match for Pakistan with 98, will be crucial to Pakistans chances. In the series against West Indies he scored a century in each of the three games, and will look to bring some of that form into this series as well.In the bowling department, Hasan Ali, the right-arm seamer, displayed promise with 3 for 18 in the warm-up game. Junaid Khan, who flew in to replace Irfan, last played an ODI in March 2015, but the left-hand seamers ability to extract extra bounce might be handy in Australian conditions if he gets a look-in.Teams:Australia XI: David Warner, Travis Head, Steven Smith (capt), Chris Lynn, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade (wk), James Faulkner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Billy Stanlake.Pakistan (from): Azhar Ali (capt), Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Rahat Ali, Sharjeel Khan, Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz.

Amla admits relief after century in 100th Test

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Hashim Amla marked his 100th Test match with a century on Thursday, then said scoring runs after a lean period was more important than the occasion.Amla was unbeaten on 125 after he and JP Duminy put South Africa in command as they reached 338 for three at the close on the first day of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers Stadium. Duminy made 155 in a third wicket partnership of 292 with Amla as the home side made a strong start to their bid to complete a 3-0 Test whitewash.Im very grateful to reach 100 Tests, but to me the silver lining is to be scoring runs after the last couple of Test matches, said Amla.Amla had gone seven Test matches and 13 innings without scoring a century and hadnt reached fifty in his previous 10 innings. Im just glad to be playing this Test match but scoring runs was my focus, he said.At the beginning of his innings he didnt look like a man set to break out of a slump. He was dropped by Dhananjaya de Silva at gully off Suranga Lakmal when he had five and only scored six in the first 50 runs of his partnership with Duminy. When I first got in they bowled really well, he said. I just stuck in and had a bit of fortune. The left-handed Duminy was the dominant partner as he shepherded Amla through a tricky period. JP took the pressure off the team. For me personally I was just staying in my zone. When JP is on song he is a beautiful player to watch. His timing is immaculate and it is always a pleasure to bat with him.Duminy was caught at second slip off Lahiru Kumara in the penultimate over of the day after hitting 19 fours in a 221-ball innings. Amla, who took 109 balls to reach 50, stroked his way through his second half-century in 60 balls and by the end of the day had faced 221 deliveries and hit 16 boundaries.Amla said he had never felt completely out of form during his run of low scores. Thats the way the game goes sometimes. I always felt I was batting well. Fortunately the other guys were scoring runs. With a reputation for always being calm and unflustered, Amla was asked whether at any stage during his career he had felt the game was too much for him. He thought for a moment and then answered, No.Sri Lanka opening batsman Kaushal Silva said he thought his teams bowlers had started well. In the first hour our guys bowled really well but they were unlucky. After lunch the wicket settled and got really flat. The ball got soft and it was easier for the batsmen to score runs. But he paid tribute to Amla. He was a bit under pressure at the start. After he got 30 runs he got his rhythm back and was more the player we know he is. After getting his fifty he was playing fluently. It was a great innings.Amla became the eighth player and second South African after former captain Graeme Smith to mark 100 Tests with a hundred.Duminy cruised to his half-century off 62 balls with ten boundaries and went on to his sixth Test century after facing 140 deliveries and adding four more boundaries. Duminys previous highest score in three previous Tests at the Wanderers was 29.Amla and Duminy came together when both opening batsmen, Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar, were dismissed within six balls when the total was on 45.Cook and Elgar survived the first hour before both were out soon after the mid-morning drinks break.Kumara was Sri Lankas most successful bowler, taking two for 79.

Amla, Duminy tons put South Africa in command

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Hashim Amla made a century in his 100th Test match as he and JP Duminy put South Africa in command on the first day of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday.South Africa reached 338 for three at the close of play, with Amla unbeaten on 125 at the Wanderers Stadium.Duminy made 155 before he was caught at second slip off Lahiru Kumara in the penultimate over of the day, ending a third wicket partnership of 192.Amla became the eighth player and second South African after former captain Graeme Smith to mark 100 Tests with a hundred. After a lean run of form, Amla struggled early in his innings. The left-handed Duminy was the dominant partner as he shepherded Amla, who was dropped by Dhananjaya de Silva at gully off Suranga Lakmal when he had five.Amla only scored six in the pairs first 50 runs together. Gradually, though, Amla found his timing and he reached his first half-century in 11 Test matches shortly before tea. He had faced 109 balls and hit seven fours. He blossomed to hit his second half-century off only 60 balls, reaching his 26th Test hundred when he skipped down the wicket and lofted Rangana Herath over mid-off for his 14th four.Duminy, by contrast, cruised to his half-century off 62 balls with ten boundaries and went on to his sixth Test century after facing 140 deliveries and adding four more boundaries.Duminys previous highest score in three previous Tests at the Wanderers was 29.Amla and Duminy came together when both opening batsmen, Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar, were dismissed within six balls when the total was on 45.Cook and Elgar survived the first hour before both were out soon after the mid-morning drinks break.Cook, playing in a Test on his home ground for the first time, was leg before wicket to Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews for ten. He sought a review of umpire Bruce Oxenfords decision but was palpably in front of his stumps. In the next over Elgar, on 27, pushed at a lifting delivery from Kumara and was caught at first slip by Dimuth Karunaratne.Kumara finished the day with two for 79.South Africa opted for an all-pace attack and gave a first cap to Duanne Olivier, 24, with left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj being left out.Left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell replaced Kyle Abbott, whose contract with Cricket South Africa was cancelled after he revealed he had signed a Kolpak contract to play English county cricket with Hampshire. These are nice conditions for Duanne to make a debut, South African captain Faf du Plessis said at the toss.Hes got a bit of pace and skill. Our best team in general conditions has a spinner but at the Wanderers in the past spin doesnt really play a role.

'You are fake news': Donald Trump shuts down CNN reporter

WEB DESK (Dunya News) – Whenever it’s Donald Trump versus press, it’s always something really interesting and a showstopper. As a presidential nominee, his feud with then-Fox anchor Megyn Kelly is still fresh in our minds and the recent feud with the CNN reporter could be an alarming precedent for years to come.In a press conference at Manhattan, the president-elect disparaged BuzzFeed for its decision to publish a memo that contains unverified claims of Trump collaboration with Russian agents.During the press conference when CNN reporter Jim Acosta attempted to ask a question, President-elect refused to take the question.Im not going to give you a question. Youre fake news, Trump replied while taking questions from a different reporter.
