Golf: Storm pips McIlroy for 'dream' SA Open triumph

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Graeme Storm of England defeated world number two Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland in a play-off Sunday to win the South African Open 83 days after losing his European Tour card.Storm, 249 places below McIlroy in the world listings, regained the right to compete only because American Patrick Reed was sidelined for playing insufficient events last season. This is a dream come true. The whole experience this week has been absolutely incredible, said Storm after his triumph at Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg.I also have to thank Patrick Reed. I got my playing card back because he did not play enough events and I have embraced the second chance with both hands.I am in shock, he admitted after winning a competition first staged in 1893, and the second oldest national golf championship after the British Open. What can I say? This is surreal. I have just beaten a golfer who is the best in the world right now.Gracious loser McIlroy said: Obviously it is disappointing to finish runner-up, but Graeme has played well all week and what a story it is for him.He thought he had lost his card at the end of last year and now he is standing with a trophy in his hands after the first event of this year. I am delighted for him.I wish I could have done a little more, but it is not a bad way to start the season and gives me something to build on in the weeks ahead.Storm, whose only other European Tour triumph came 10 years ago in the French Open, won with a par four at the third extra hole when McIlroy missed a seven-foot putt.It was the third time McIlroy, who trails Australian Jason Day in the world rankings, had been involved in a European Tour play-off, and the third time he failed.Three strokes ahead going into the final round, Storm carded a 71 while McIlroy, second overnight, fired a 68.Storm had a let-off at the penultimate hole of the final round, which he parred, when McIlroy dropped a stroke having taken two shots to get out of a greenside bunker. They finished on 270 -- 18 under par -- one stroke ahead of Englishman Jordan Smith, who closed with a 68.The play-off was confined to the 18th and McIlroy twice survived wayward drives to salvage pars, and match the steadier Storm.McIlroy was short and just off the green with his second shot at the third extra hole, then narrowly missed a par putt while Storm reached the green in two and two putted for victory.Storm closed with a round of two birdies and one bogey over the 6,942-metre (7,100-yard) parkland track.Taking anti-inflammatory tablets to ease a back pain he suffered since Thursday, McIlroy birdied five holes and bogeyed one in his final round. It was his second South African Open appearance, eight years after missing a play-off by one shot when a virtual unknown.Defending champion Brandon Stone of South Africa, on the back foot after an opening 74, closed with a 71 to finish 11 shots adrift of Storm and McIlroy.

ICC bans substandard helmets for batsmen in cricket

LAHORE (Dunya News) - International Cricket Council (ICC) banned substandard helmets on 15 January and warned cricketers to start wearing helmets which have been approved as safe, reported Dunya News.ICC warned that if a player would not wear the safety approved helmet, it could earn them a one match ban. After getting warnings, there would be a deadline of 2 matches before the player gets banned.ICC general manager Geoff Allardice said that this decision was taken for the safety of the batsmen. ICC had suggested British quality helmet for safety in June 2016, which was made in November 2015.It is also pertinent to mention that Australian batsman Phil Hughes had died after being hit by a bouncer in domestic match. ICC has been given special preference to helmet qualities and safety since then.

NATO 'obsolete,' says Trump as he suggests Russia nuclear deal

Posted:

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, Jan 16, 2017 (AFP) - President-elect Donald Trump, in remarks published on Sunday, described NATO as obsolete and suggested a deal with Russia that would reduce nuclear arsenals and ease sanctions on Moscow. He also hailed Britains exit from the EU and backed a speedy trade deal with the UK, but condemned as catastrophic Chancellor Angela Merkels decision to open Germanys doors to a flood of refugees.I said a long time ago that NATO had problems, Trump told The Times of London and Bild, Germanys biggest-selling daily.Number one, it was obsolete, because it was designed many, many years ago, he said.Number two, the countries arent paying what theyre supposed to pay.I took such heat, when I said NATO was obsolete. Its obsolete because it wasnt taking care of terror. I took a lot of heat for two days. And then they started saying Trump is right. He added, though, NATO is very important to me.On the campaign trail, Trump said he would think twice about helping NATO allies if the United States were not reasonably reimbursed for the costs of defending them. His comments caused consternation among eastern European NATO countries nervous about Moscow following Russias annexation of Crimea and involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. After Trumps victory, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance had been a bedrock of transatlantic security for almost 70 years and was especially needed at a time of new challenges. This is no time to question the partnership between Europe and the United States, Stoltenberg said.Spending has been a common source of friction within the 28-nation alliance over recent years. The core military contributor to the alliance is the United States, which accounts for about 70 percent of spending. In 2014, stung into action by Russias intervention in Ukraine, upheaval in the Middle East and North Africa, NATO leaders agreed to reverse years of defence cuts and devote the equivalent of two percent of economic output to defence. The countries arent paying their fair share so were supposed to protect countries, Trump said in Sundays interview.Theres five countries that are paying what theyre supposed to. Five. Its not much.In other remarks carried by The Times, Trump suggested cutting a deal with Russia in which nuclear arsenals would be reduced and sanctions against Moscow would be eased. They have sanctions on Russia -- lets see if we can make some good deals with Russia. I think nuclear weapons should be way down and reduced very substantially, thats part of it, Trump said. But Russias hurting very badly right now because of sanctions, but I think something can happen that a lot of people are gonna benefit, said the president-elect, who has previously expressed admiration for Russian leader Vladimir Putin. There were no details about the specific sanctions that Trump had in mind, or their range.Under Barack Obama, the US applied various sanctions against Moscow for its involvement in Ukraine, the Syrian war and for alleged cyber attacks to influence the US election.Washingtons European allies imposed sanctions against Russia over Ukraine in 2014. Those measures were renewed on December 19.In other remarks, Trump said Brexit is going to end up as a great thing and said he backed a trade deal with post-EU Britain, which would be good for both sides. Were gonna work very hard to get it done quickly and done properly, said Trump, confirming he will meet British Prime Minister Theresa May soon after his inauguration on January 20.Other countries will leave the European Union in future, Trump prophesied, largely due to the pressure the bloc was put under following a significant uptick in migrants and refugees arriving. If they hadnt been forced to take in all of the refugees, so many, with all the problems that it... entails, I think that you wouldnt have a Brexit. This was the final straw that broke the camels back, he said. But he also criticised Merkel for letting Germany admit undocumented migrants enter the country, insinuating that this posed a security risk.I think she made one very catastrophic mistake and that was taking all of these illegals, you know taking all of the people from wherever they come from. And nobody even knows where they come from, Trump said, adding he had great respect for the chancellor.Merkel took flak at home after her open-door policy aimed at desperate Syrian refugees brought 890,000 asylum seekers to Europes biggest economy in 2015, contributing to the rise of an anti-migrant movement. But in 2016, that figure dropped back sharply, to 280,000 arrivals the government said last Wednesday.

Outgoing CIA chief warns Trump to watch his words

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Outgoing CIA chief John Brennan on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Donald Trump, warning him to watch what he says and suggesting the president-elect doesnt understand the challenges posed by Russia.Brennans stern words -- which sparked a quick Twitter retort from Trump -- were the latest salvo in the ongoing feud between the incoming Republican leader and US intelligence agencies, who have concluded Moscow meddled in the November election. The 70-year-old Trump, who takes office on Friday, has nevertheless been effusive in his praise of Vladimir Putin, saying that if the Russian leader likes him, it would be an asset to help repair strained ties with Moscow. The Senate Intelligence committee meanwhile has launched a bipartisan probe into Moscows alleged interference in US politics -- which could force officials in both Barack Obamas administration and Trumps government to testify.I dont think he has a full appreciation of Russian capabilities, Russias intentions and actions, Brennan said of Trump on Fox News Sunday. I think Mr. Trump has to be very disciplined in terms of what it is that he says publicly, Brennan said. He is going to be, in a few days time, the most powerful person in the world, in terms of sitting on top of the United States government and I think he has to recognize that his words do have impact, the CIA chief added.Hes going to have the opportunity to do something for national security as opposed to talking and tweeting, he said.Spontaneity is not something that protects national security interests.US intelligence agencies allege that Putin ordered a covert effort to interfere in the election to boost Trump and harm his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton.A report from the Director of National Intelligence released this month said hackers working for Russia penetrated Democratic Party computers and accounts to release files embarrassing to Clinton, and also conducted a campaign of media manipulation with the same aim.Trumps feud with intelligence agencies has been stoked by the leak of an unsubstantiated report that Russia had gathered compromising personal and financial material on the president-elect, and alleged close links between Trump and Kremlin aides during the campaign.Hours after Brennans rebuke, Trump slapped back at intelligence leaders on Twitter, echoing the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward, who called the alleged Russia kompromat dossier garbage.Thank you to Bob Woodward who said, That is a garbage document...it never should have been presented...Trumps right to be upset (angry)...about that...Those Intelligence chiefs made a mistake here, & when people make mistakes, they should APOLOGIZE. Media should also apologize, Trump tweeted.Incoming Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday dismissed notions that the Trump team and the Kremlin had made contact during the 2016 race. This is all a distraction, he said on NBCs Meet the Press. Its all part of a narrative to delegitimize the election and to question the legitimacy of his presidency. The unsubstantiated dossier about Trump, Russia and possible compromising material -- compiled by a former British MI6 intelligence agent doing opposition research for Trumps campaign opponents -- also said Moscow had incriminating video of the president-elect.The fact that intelligence agencies had offered Trump a synopsis of the dossier -- which was later published in full online by BuzzFeed -- lent the allegations credence. But Brennan said the intelligence community was only making sure that the president-elect was aware that it was circulating.I think there are some very salacious allegations in there -- again, unsubstantiated, he said, adding it was a responsibility in the minds of the intelligence directors to inform Trump as well as the Obama White House of the report.Brennan bristled at Trumps likening of the US intelligence community to Nazi Germany, calling it outrageous.I do take great umbrage at that, the outgoing spy chief said.Pence blamed the scandal on media bias, in an interview with CBS.

Football: Sevilla late show ends Madrid's 40-game unbeaten run

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - A stunning stoppage time winner from Stevan Jovetic ended Real Madrids Spanish record 40-game unbeaten run on Sunday as Sevilla scored twice in the final five minutes to win 2-1 at the Sanchez Pizjuan.Cristiano Ronaldos penalty put Madrid in front 23 minutes from time, but Sergio Ramoss own goal levelled before Jovetic, making his La Liga debut on loan from Inter Milan, curled home from 25 yards.Victory takes Sevilla to within a point of Real at the top of the table, but Madrid also have a game in hand.Sevilla had been just seconds away from ending Reals run just four days ago until Karim Benzemas stoppage time equaliser allowed Real to advance 6-3 on aggregate in the Copa del Rey after a 3-3 draw on Thursday. However, the bad blood from that match boiled over as former Sevilla favourite Ramoss clash with the most fervent section of the home support continued with the Real captain roundly jeered every time he touched the ball. And the home fans took extra delight as it was Ramos, so often Reals saviour with important late goals, who inspired Sevillas fightback when he turned into his own net before Jovetic struck in the most dramatic of circumstances.Until the final five minutes Real had looked defensively solid as boss Zinedine Zidane switched to a back three to match up with Sevillas favoured formation. And in contrast to Thursdays goal fest, the sides cancelled each other out in an intense first 45 minutes short on clear-cut chances.Ronaldo had the best opportunity of the first-half when he sliced wide from Benzemas dangerous cross.Luka Modric had a penalty claim waved away at the start of the second-half, whilst at the other end Wissam Ben Yedder tested Keylor Navas with a low drive that the Real keeper comfortably gathered. However, the match and title race, looked to be swinging decisively in Reals favour when Sergio Rico clipped the heels of Dani Carvajal as the Madrid full-back burst into the area midway through the second-half.Despite Vitolos best attempts to damage the penalty spot as Ronaldo prepared to take, the Portuguese comfortably dispatched the ball into the bottom corner for his 23rd goal against Sevilla.Reals run has been littered with late goals and fightbacks, but for once the European champions were on the receiving end of a stunning turnaround late on.Firstly, Pablo Sarabias fiercely dipping free-kick caught Ramos off guard as he powered a header into his own net.The Spanish international nearly scored another own goal seconds later as he turned Jovetics dangeorus drive over the barBut Jovetic, who only joined Sevilla on Tuesday, scored his second goal in as many games for the Europa League holders two minutes into stoppage time he curled the ball into the top corner from despite Navas getting a hand to his effort.

Pakistan record first ODI win in Australia in 12 years

Posted:

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Pakistan beat Australia by six wickets in the second one-day international at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, their first ODI win on Australian soil for 12 years. The win was also Pakistans first ODI victory at the MCG since 1985 and levels the five-match series at 1-1.Australian captain Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bat first on a flat-looking wicket, but Pakistans opening pair Mohammad Amir (3-47) and Junaid Khan (2-40) bowled superbly to help restrict the home side to 220 all out. They were backed up by left arm spinner Imad Wasim (2-37), whose 10-over spell in the middle of the innings tied the batsmen down and slowed the scoring. The modest total never looked enough once Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez (72) and fellow opener Sharjeel Khan (29) had put on 68 for the first wicket.Babar Azam chipped in with 34 before Shoaib Malik (42 not out) and Umar Akmal (18 not out) guided the visitors home with 2.2 overs to spare.I think the bowlers did a great job for us, said Hafeez, who was also named man of the match. We wanted to get a total on the board that we were comfortable with because the ball wasnt coming onto the bat.The bowlers took wickets at the right time and kept the pressure on.Australia went into the match without a recognised spinner and were made to pay the price on a two-paced wicket that favoured the slower bowlers.Their seam attack did its best to restrict the Pakistan batting, with Josh Hazelwood (0-32) the most impressive despite not taking a wicket, and James Faulkner (2-35) effective with his changes of pace. But the other bowlers were ineffective and expensive, with off-spinner Travis Head going for 23 runs off his 2.4 overs.Amir and Junaid Khan set the tone early with their impressive opening spells.Junaid, brought into the team in place of Wahab Riaz, induced an edge from the dangerous David Warner (16) to leave the Australians on 31-1. Junaid soon added the scalp of Usman Khawaja when he edged to first slip Sharjeel Khan, who took a fine catch low to his left.Australia promoted all-rounder Mitchell Marsh up the order but the experiment failed as he scooped the first ball he faced from Amir to Imad at cover to leave the home side 41 for three.Head then joined Smith in the middle and hit five boundaries on his way to 29 before he edged Hasan Ali to Mohammad Rizwan with Australia on 86 for four.Smith (60) brought up a hard-fought 50 from 91 balls with only two boundaries and no sixes, but with eight overs to go he got an inside edge onto his pads and then stumps to give Imad his second wicket. There was a steady procession of wickets until Faulkner skied a ball to point off Amir to leave Pakistan needing only 221 to level the series.Smith said the Australians had paid the price for attacking too early and losing key wickets before the spinners came on to bowl.We were probably about 40 runs too short -- the bowlers did a pretty good job of trying to contain them, but we just werent good enough, he said.

Paris summit warns against 'unilateral' steps in Mideast conflict

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A conference for peace in the Middle East on Sunday warned Israel and the Palestinians against taking unilateral steps on Jerusalem and on borders that could imperil a negotiated solution to their seven-decade conflict.Around 70 countries attending talks in Paris called on the two sides to avoid moves that prejudge the outcome of negotiations on final status issues, including inter alia, Jerusalem, borders, security, refugees. The participants in the conference will not recognise such steps, they warned in a statement. They also agreed that the basis for the negotiations should be the 1967 borders, before Israel occupied the West Bank and east Jerusalem, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault told a press conference.France organised the gathering to reaffirm global support for a Palestinian state existing alongside an Israeli state -- a scenario the Palestinians fear could be jeopardised by Donald Trumps incoming US administration.Neither Israel nor the Palestinians attended the conference, which the Palestinians supported but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed as futile.US Secretary of State John Kerry, attending the talks on his farewell tour, said he had negotiated to prevent Israel being treated unfairly. We did what was necessary to have a balanced resolution, Kerry told reporters and confirmed he had spoken to Netanyahu during the meeting to reassure him.Kerry noted that leading Arab nations had endorsed the US outline of a solution which insists on the need for two states, one of them Israel recognised as a Jewish state. The Palestinians welcomed the closing statement, with Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Secretary General Saeb Erekat saying it had stressed the need to end the Israeli occupation.Israel though said the conference, and others like it, made peace harder to find since they encourage the Palestinians to continue to refuse direct talks with Israel.Ayrault said the conference participants had set out the 1967 frontiers as the cornerstone of final-status negotiations. The basis is the 1967 borders and the major UN resolutions, he said. The conference comes as Trumps campaign pledge to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem sparks deep concerns for peace in the Middle East.Ayrault said such a move, which would support Israels claim that Jerusalem is its capital, would be a provocation.Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas has warned it would destroy peace efforts. The Palestinians regard Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, while Israel proclaims the entire city as its capital. The status of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest issues in the conflict. When you are president of the United States, you cannot take such a stubborn and such a unilateral view on this issue. You have to try to create the conditions for peace, Ayrault told French TV.President Francois Hollande told the gathering that the prospect of two independent states coexisting side-by-side -- seen as increasingly elusive -- remains the goal of the entire international community. But Netanyahu, who insists only direct talks with the Palestinians can bring peace, said before the meeting it was a last gasp of the past.Abbas has accepted Hollandes offer to come to Paris to discuss the conclusions of the talks but Netanyahu has refused, French diplomats said. The conference was mainly symbolic, but came at a crucial juncture for the Middle East, five days before Trump is sworn in as president.Trump has said theres nobody more pro-Israeli than I am and his choice for ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, is a hardliner who says he looks forward to working from Israels eternal capital, Jerusalem. The conference came a month after a landmark UN Security Council resolution criticising Israeli settler activity that outraged Netanyahu. The vote passed after the Obama administration -- in a parting shot at Netanyahu -- took the rare step of abstaining rather than using its veto to protect Israel.EU foreign ministers are set to discuss the Paris conferences conclusions on Monday.A European diplomat said it was uncertain whether they would issue a statement, with Britain and some central European countries reluctant to upset the Trump administration.Britain only attended the Paris talks as an observer and so did not sign the statement.Israeli-Palestinian efforts have been at a standstill since a US-led initiative collapsed in April 2014.Tensions have spiralled recently following a wave of Palestinian attacks and inflammatory rhetoric on both sides.Israels ongoing expansion of settlements on occupied Palestinian territory is also seen as a major obstacle to a resolution.Abbas warned starkly on Saturday about the consequences of an embassy move. Any attempts at legitimising the illegal Israeli annexation of the city will destroy the prospects of any political process, bury the hopes for a two-state solution and fuel extremism, in our region, as well as worldwide, he said.
