West Indies claim late wickets as Pakistan close on 172-3

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - West Indies hit back with three wickets in the final hour after a 155-run opening stand as Pakistan reached stumps at 172 for three in reply to the home sides first innings total of 312 on the second day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Monday.Azhar Ali held firm at one end for an unbeaten 81 in a five-hour vigil after opening partner Ahmed Shehzad rode outrageous moments of luck to contribute 70 in the first-wicket partnership. He resumes on the third morning alongside captain Misbah ul Haq.Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo eventually broke through for the home side by having Shehzad caught at slip before adding the prized scalp of Younis Khan for a duck when the veteran pulled a long-hop to Shannon Gabriel at midwicket. In between those dismissals, Gabriel removed Babar Azam, also without scoring, to a catch off his own bowling. It was no more than the burly fast bowler deserved although his earlier misfortune was compounded by chronic no-ball problems.Dropped at mid-on by Vishaul Singh just as Pakistan started their reply in the morning session, Shehzad was then ruled LBW off Gabriel when on 21 in the post-lunch period only for the decision to be overturned after television replays determined the delivery to be a no-ball.Lightning then struck twice for the same man after he was stranded down the pitch and stumped to the bowling of off-spinner Roston Chase on 32, the batsman almost reaching the pavilion when he was summoned by the umpires to return to the crease as the replays again showed the bowler to have transgressed the front crease. There was variable bounce out there so it was really difficult to get going, but I have to admit that I had more than my fair share of luck, said Shehzad.I cant give enough credit to Azhar for the way he has played and if he can continue on the third day and help give us a lead, then we have a good chance to win this match and the series. Those lucky moments consolidated what had been Pakistans day until the final hour after they wrapped up the West Indies first innings within an hour of the start.Mohammad Abbas led the visiting bowlers effort with two more wickets to finish with four for 56, the best figures by a Pakistan fast bowler in Test innings at the venue, bettering Wasim Akrams four for 73 in 1988, as the home team lost their last four wickets for the addition of 26 more runs.West Indies hopes of pushing towards a total closer to the 400-run mark were dashed within the first nine deliveries of the morning as their first-day heroes, Chase and Jason Holder, were dismissed without any addition to the overnight total of 286 for six.Holder was the first to go, his late decision to pull away from an Abbas delivery resulting in an inside-edge to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed. Mohammad Amir then removed Chase, whose 131 was the first Test century by a Barbadian on home soil for 18 years. Drawn forward by a full-length delivery, his indeterminate prod resulted in a thick outside edge for Younis Khan to snare his third catch of the innings at second slip.Bishoo played in his usual pugnacious manner but Abbas request of his captain for another over reaped immediate rewards when Bishoo lifted an on-drive to Yasir Shah at mid-on. Shah then wrapped up the innings when Alzarri Joseph was bowled missing a heave at a full-toss in the leg-spinners first over of the morning.

Australia's Handscomb stars in Roses win

LONDON (AFP) - Australias Peter Handscomb made 86 as Yorkshire beat Roses rivals Lancashire by 79 runs in English county crickets One-Day Cup at Headingley on Monday.Test batsman Handscomb top-scored in Yorkshires total of 296 for nine. The 26-year-old Victorian faced 78 balls, including eight fours and two sixes.Yorkshire were 87 for three after England Test captain Joe Root fell for 21 but Handscomb and Gary Ballance (85) kept Lancashire, who opted to field first after winning the toss in overcast conditions, at bay with a 143-run partnership compiled in 20 overs. Both batsmen contributed to their own dismissals as they each fell short of a hundred, with Yorkshire losing six wickets for 66 runs as they fell shy of 300.But their total proved more than enough, with Lancashire collapsing to 217 all out inside 44 overs.Handscomb was in fine touch and closed in on three figures by smashing Luke Proctor for six, four, two and another six.But going for one more big shot, hia mistimed heave off the persevering Proctor was well caught by England paceman James Anderson, running in from deep midwicket.Ballance, looking to regain his England place, has already scored heavily with more than 500 runs in three first-class County Championship matches. He missed out on his fourth century in all formats at the start of this season when, two balls after being dropped reverse-sweeping, he was lbw to left-arm spinner Stephen Perry attempting a similar shot.Lancashires reply saw them undone by Yorkshires spinners, with England leg-break bowler Adil Rashid striking twice and Azeem Rafiq taking four for 47.But it was White Rose veteran Tim Bresnan who made the initial breakthrough when the ex-England pcamen got Procter to play on for 10.Lsancashire had, surprisingly, kept England Test opener Haseeb Hameed down the order but the Red Rose move was not a success as he holed out to mid-on for just eight. The big-hitting Liam Livingstone, a potential England prospect, struck fast bowler Liam Plunkett for two sixes before he was bowled by Rashids googly.Meanwhile England Test batsman Keaton Jenningss hundred set up Durhams 72-run win away to Warwickshire in their One-Day Cup match at Edgbaston.Jennings, the son of former South African wicket-keeper Ray Jennings, made a one-ay best 139, including 19 fours and two sixes, as Durham compiled an imposing total of 313 for five in a rain-reduced 39 overs.Durham fast bowler Mark Wood, who has been struggling with ankle problems, then took two wickets, including dismissing former England batsman Ian Bell for one, as Warwickshire were dismissed for 241 despite 92 from another ex-England international in Jonathan Trott.Woods return of two for 34 in eight overs was an encouraging sign for England, who have picked the fast bowler for this weeks two one-day internationals against Ireland, with the 27-year-old also selected to spearhead the tournament hosts attack in next months Champions Trophy.

USA Cricket Association faces expulsion from ICC

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - The United States Cricket Association (USACA) faces expulsion from the International Cricket Council (ICC), the sports global governing body said on Monday. The ICC Board said the ICC Full Council should consider the expulsion of USACA at its meeting in June, because the organisation has failed to co-operate with efforts to unify cricket in the United States.USACA had already been temporarily suspended from ICC membership in 2015, the third time in the last 12 years. The decision to pass this resolution was not taken lightly by the ICC Board, ICC chief executive David Richardson said in a statement. Our focus throughout this two year process has been on the unification of the USA cricket community behind USACA to grow and develop the sport, he said. But it has become clear that this is just not possible and, having invested so much time and resources into helping USACA and with little in the way of cooperation from USACA, the ICC Board now felt that the only remaining option was for the ICC Full Council to consider expulsion of USACA as a member of the ICC.USACAs refusal to engage in the process, to meet a number of fundamental reinstatement conditions, to provide responses to further requests for information and its apparent failure to put the ICC Board-approved constitution before its members without legitimate excuse undermines the all-important objective of uniting the sport.

Shehzad rides luck after West Indies out for 312

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Azhar Ali and an extremely fortunate Ahmed Shehzad navigated the afternoon session for an unbroken opening stand of 106 in reply to the West Indies first innings total of 312 at tea on the second day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Monday.Dropped at mid-on by Vishaul Singh off fast bowler Shannon Gabriel at the start of his innings before lunch, Shehzad benefited from two even more outrageous reprieves after the interval to be unbeaten on 40. His unconvincing innings has been in stark contrast to opening partner Ali, who will resume on an assured 54 in the days final period of play having stroked six fours off 109 deliveries. With the two batsmen labouring to keep the score moving along on a warm afternoon, Shehzad was ruled LBW off Gabriel when on 21 only for the decision to be overturned after television replays determined the delivery to be a no-ball.Lightning then struck twice for the same man after he was stranded down the pitch and stumped to the bowling of off-spinner Roston Chase on 32, the batsman almost reaching the pavilion when he was summoned by the umpires to return to the crease as the replays again showed the bowler to have transgressed the front crease. Those lucky moments consolidated what has been Pakistans day so far after they wrapped up the West Indies first innings within an hour of the start.Mohammad Abbas led the visiting bowlers effort with two more wickets to finish with four for 56, the best figures by a Pakistan fast bowler in Test innings at the venue, bettering Wasim Akrams four for 73 in 1988, as the home team lost their last four wickets for the addition of 26 more runs.West Indies hopes of pushing towards a total closer to the 400-run mark were dashed within the first nine deliveries of the morning as their first-day heroes, Chase and Jason Holder, were dismissed without any addition to the overnight total of 286 for six.Holder was the first to go, his late decision to pull away from an Abbas delivery resulting in an inside-edge to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed. Mohammad Amir then removed Chase, whose 131 was the first Test century by a Barbadian on home soil for 18 years. Drawn forward by a full-length delivery, his indeterminate prod resulted in a thick outside edge for Younis Khan to snare his third catch of the innings at second slip.Devendra Bishoo played in his usual pugnacious manner but Abbas insistence to captain Misbah ul Haq for another over reaped immediate rewards when Bishoo lifted an on-drive to Yasir Shah at mid-on. Composer seeks answers after US airport detention

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - A prominent composer has asked for answers and greater scrutiny of US airports treatment of travelers after he said he was detained for hours on his return to New York.Mohammed Fairouz, a longtime New York resident whose works are frequently played at major institutions such as Carnegie Hall, said he was pulled aside on April 24 at John F. Kennedy International Airport and held for nearly four hours without explanation. The composer, who was returning from a string orchestra recording session in Britain, hesitated to allege he was singled out because of his Muslim name. He said that most of the dozens of others in the detention room were from Latin America owing to flight timings.I dont feel like a victim. Im aware that Im a very privileged person and I can go out and write and speak and have a platform, Fairouz told AFP.The majority of people in that room dont have that platform. They are never going to know what happened. Theyre going to be intimidated, Fairouz said.Fairouz, who first wrote of his experience in a column in the British newspaper The Independent where he comments on politics, said he did not think the incident was linked to President Donald Trump who has championed a tough line on border controls.Instead, he suspected that officers were filling quotas on how many people to question -- and said the male-dominated group sorely needed female representation.A US Customs and Border Protection spokesman said he could not discuss individual cases but defended the agency, saying it has stopped thousands of violators of US law.US Customs and Border Protection officers strive to treat all people arriving in the country with dignity and respect, he said. But Fairouz said that officers brusque behavior ultimately had a devastating effect for the United States by discouraging law-abiding students and others from coming.Fairouz, who holds citizenship in the United Arab Emirates, said there was a double-standard in letting US airports off the hook. When passengers are interrogated in Dubai, the worlds busiest airport for international passengers, its in the press and its a human rights catastrophe, he said.Im not saying its wrong to address that, but its wrong when it happens in the United States, too, and were doing it every day here, he said. The son of late boxing icon Muhammad Ali said he was detained twice this year at airports and has spoken of filing a class-action suit on behalf of Muslim travelers.
