Sarkar spearheads Bangladesh rout of Irish

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - A dashing unbeaten 87 by Soumya Sarkar inspired Bangladesh to an eight-wicket victory over hosts Ireland in the fourth match of the Tri-Series with almost 23 overs to spare on Friday. After dismissing Ireland for just 181 in 46.3 overs, the Bangladesh batsmen did much as they pleased with opener Sarkar hitting 11 fours and two sixes in his 68-ball innings. He shared an opening stand of 95 in 14 overs with Tamim Iqbal and then 76 for the second wicket with Sabbir Rahman who hit 35 from 34 balls.Tamim saw much more of the strike in the first wicket stand, facing 54 balls for his 47.He gave only one chance, to wicket-keeper Niall OBrien when he was 57, but by that stage Bangladesh needed only 60 to win. After scoring only one run in his first two innings of the series, Sabbir made a cautious start but he was quickly into his stride and only with the end in sight did he play one shot too many and was caught on the mid-wicket boundary.Kevin OBrien took his 99th ODI wicket when he had Tamim caught behind by his brother and Peter Chase again bowled with good pace and was the unlucky bowler when Sarkar was dropped. It was the Bangladesh bowlers who set up the comfortable chase with left arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman the pick of the impressive attack with four for 23.He was backed up by captain, Mashrafe Mortaza, who took two for 18 and debutant Sunzamul Islam also claimed two wickets, his first being Irelands best batsman and top scorer Ed Joyce for 46.Joyce had missed the first two games of the series with a back injury but he had to play a rearguard innings as he lost three partners in the first 15 oversAndrew Balbirnie was surprisingly sent in at number four, even though Niall OBrien had scored a century in Irelands last game against New Zealand, and it proved a mistake as he had scored only 12 before Shakib Al Hasan beat his defence.OBrien again looked comfortable, reaching 30 off 42 balls but his attempt at hitting a second six was intercepted inside the boundary by Tamim who held a good catch above his head. When Joyce miscued to the same fielder in the same position in the next over, Ireland were 126 for five only late resistance by George Dockrell with a resilient 25 off 50 balls ensured Bangladesh did not have to bat before lunch. The second half of the game proved a formality for the Tigers who play New Zealand in their final game on Wednesday. The series continues on Sunday with Irelands final game, against the Black Caps.

West Indies hand Beaton debut in Afghanistan series

ST. JOHNS (AFP) - West Indies on Friday called up uncapped fast bowler Ronsford Beaton into their 13-man squad to face Afghanistan in a three-match Twenty20 series next month. The tall 24-year-old fast bowler has so far played 36 T20 matches, with 31 wickets including best figures of 4-9.Test skipper Jason Holder has been rested after a gruelling battle against Pakistan which saw West Indies lose the Test, ODI and T20 series. After the T20 Series against Pakistan (which was lost 3-1) we felt that it was important to keep the same group together so that the coaches can continue developing the young players, said Courtney Browne, the chairman of the selection panel. This coupled with the vast T20 experience of some of our senior players can help us to build a very formidable unit.West Indies, the defending world T20 champions, insisted they will not take Afghanistan lightly, especially as the Asian side are pushing hard to be granted Test match status. In developing a high performance unit there is never room for complacency and our expectation is to win against a team that is ranked lower than us in the ICC rankings, added Browne. The three games against Afghanistan will all take place at Warner Park in St Kitts -- on June 2, 3 and 5.The two teams will also play three one-dayers later in the month.West Indies squad to face Afghanistan in a three-match Twenty20 series in June:Carlos Brathwaite (captain), Samuel Badree, Ronsford Beaton, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Rovman Powell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Jerome Taylor, Chadwick Walton, Kesrick Williams.

Assange claims victory after Sweden drops rape probe

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Julian Assange claimed victory Friday after Swedish prosecutors dropped a seven-year rape allegation against the WikiLeaks founder, but insisted the proper war over his future was only just beginning.Assange gave a clenched fist salute as he stepped into the daylight on the balcony of Ecuadors London embassy, where he has been holed up since 2012.But the 45-year-old Australian said the road was far from over and declined to reveal whether he would leave the embassy after five years cooped up inside.British police would arrest him immediately for breaching earlier bail conditions if he left the embassy, while US authorities have warned they regard WikiLeaks as a hostile intelligence service.Today is an important victory, Assange told reporters and a small band of supporters crowded around the tiny balcony, after emerging wearing a black shirt and jacket. But it by no means erases seven years of detention without charge. In prison, under house arrest and almost five years here in this embassy without sunlight. That is not something that I can forgive. It is not something that I can forget.- Uncertain future -====================Earlier in Stockholm, Marianne Ny, Swedens director of public prosecutions, said the rape investigation had been dropped because there was no reason to believe that the decision to surrender him to Sweden can be executed in the foreseeable future. It is no longer proportionate to maintain the arrest of Julian Assange in his absence, she said.Despite the probe in Sweden being dropped, Assange would still face arrest if he set foot outside the embassy, a flat located just behind the plush Harrods emporium.Assange jumped British bail by entering the embassy and claiming asylum, saying he feared he would eventually be extradited to the United States.US justice authorities have never confirmed that they have Assange under investigation or are seeking his extradition. But US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last month that we will seek to put some people in jail, when asked if arresting Assange was a priority for Washington.US prosecutors have been drafting a memo that looks at charges against Assange and WikiLeaks members that possibly include conspiracy, theft of government property and violations of the Espionage Act, according to The Washington Post.US President Donald Trumps administration has put heat on WikiLeaks after it embarrassed the Central Intelligence Agency in March by releasing files and computer code from the spy agencys top-secret hacking operations. While today was an important victory and an important vindication, the road is far from over. The war, the proper war is just commencing, Assange said.He said his lawyers were in touch with the British authorities and hoped to begin a dialogue about the best way forward. And the former computer hacker said that despite the extremely threatening remarks emanating from Washington, he was always ready to engage with the Department of Justice. The department said Friday it had no comment at this point on Assange.Asked if London would now support a request to extradite Assange to the United States, British Prime Minister Theresa May said: We look at extradition requests on a case-by-case basis.Assanges Swedish lawyer, Per Samuelsson, said his client plans to move to Ecuador because its the only nation where he is safe.- Decision a scandal -========================In Sweden, Assanges accuser was left stunned by the prosecutors decision. It is a scandal that a suspected rapist can escape justice and thereby avoid the courts, her lawyer, Elisabeth Fritz, told AFP in an email. My client is shocked and no decision to (end the case) can make her change (her mind) that Assange exposed her to rape, she said. The accusation against Assange dates from August 2010 when the alleged victim, who says she met him at a WikiLeaks conference in Stockholm a few days earlier, filed a complaint. She accused him of having sex with her -- as she slept -- without using a condom despite repeatedly having denied him unprotected sex.Assange always denied the allegations, which he feared would lead to him being extradited to the United States and facing trial over the leak of hundreds of thousands of secret US military and diplomatic documents in 2010, which brought WikiLeaks to prominence.

Trump leaves on foreign trips to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Europe

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - From Riyadh to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Rome, Brussels and Sicily, Donald Trump left a swirl of domestic woes behind Friday as he embarked on a first foreign trip that will be closely watched in capitals the world over.Trumps extraordinarily dense first trip -- six stops in eight days, and countless face-to-face meetings from Saudi King Salman to Pope Francis via Frances new leader, Emmanuel Macron -- is fraught with perils for the president. The avalanche of revelations in the run-up to his departure have eroded Trumps standing at home -- where the parallels with Richard Nixons ill-fated presidency are now being openly drawn. They also revived questions about his ability to strike a presidential tone with his foreign counterparts.Truth is, nobody knows how Donald Trump is going to act or what hes going to say in meetings of this kind because hes never done it before, summed up Stephen Sestanovich of the Council on Foreign Relations.White House staff cast the 70-year-olds friendly but candid style as an asset in his dealings with foreign leaders. But as the Republican takes his first steps as head of state on the world stage, his every word, action and tweet will be under the microscope.Getting ready for my big foreign trip. Will be strongly protecting American interests - thats what I like to do he said on Twitter before his departure.Known to dislike long trips, the president was joined by his wife Melania, who has until now cut a highly discreet figure at his side. His daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner -- two of his closest advisors -- were also on board Air Force One.What message will Trump be taking to the world? On foreign policy, the president has pulled back spectacularly from his most provocative campaign pledges, towards a stance in many respects similar to his predecessor Barack Obama. But the real estate magnate will still need to explain to foreign partners how his favorite slogan -- America First -- can be compatible with multilateralism.President Trump understands that America First does not mean American alone -- to the contrary, insisted his national security advisor, H.R. McMaster.Catchphrases aside, many questions remain unanswered. Speech on IslamThe White House touts a historic trip during which Trump -- in visits to Saudi Arabia, the Vatican and Jerusalem -- will reach out to leaders of the worlds major monotheistic faiths.During his two days in Riyadh, he will likely seek to strike a contrast with the Democrat Obama, who was widely viewed with suspicion by the Sunni Muslim monarchies of the Gulf. The combination of tough talk on Shiite Iran, a lower-key focus on human rights, and the likely announcement of new arms deals should in theory earn the US leader a warm welcome.Trumps delivery of a speech on Islam before dozens of Muslim leaders gathered in the Saudi capital could prove a far more delicate exercise, however, given the tensions sparked by his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority nations -- now stuck in the US courts.Ill speak with Muslim leaders and challenge them to fight hatred and extremism, and embrace a peaceful future for their faith, Trump promised ahead of the trip.In Israel, Trump has hopes -- though it is still unclear how -- of reviving the moribund peace process, meeting both his friend Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in Bethlehem. But the Israeli leg of his trip is already awash in controversy -- from a row over his visit to Jerusalems Western Wall, the holiest prayer site for Jews, to Trumps alleged disclosure of Israeli intelligence to Russian officials.Trumps meeting with Pope Francis -- two men at odds on everything from climate change to refugee policy -- remains highly unpredictable, although the pontiff says he will give Americas bullish leader an open-minded hearing. Finally, the presidents trip will wrap up in Europe where his shifting pronouncements on Brexit, NATO and the future of the European Union have sown confusion among longstanding allies.Trump will meet members of the North Atlantic alliance in Brussels, before heading on to a G7 summit in Taormina, a picturesque Sicilian town overlooking the Mediterranean.Does he invest in the relationship with the Atlantic partners in the same way that every president has done since Pearl Harbor? wondered Charles Kupchan, former advisor to Obama. He came into office suggesting not. He has since said and done things suggesting maybe. But I think everyone will be watching for that.Trump has yet to personally reassert the US commitment to Article 5, NATOs mutual defense clause. The Nixon tripHow his trip is perceived by fellow Americans is key for the president.Well aware of heightened concerns about terrorism, the Republican hopes to bring back hard commitments from US allies in the fight against the Islamic State group. But however powerful the images of Trumps globe-trotting turn out to be, they have little chance of eclipsing the scandals convulsing his White House back home. For ex-CIA analyst Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, the comparison that springs most obviously to mind is with Nixons 1974 trip to the Middle East, which he hoped would yield a diplomatic success to divert attention away from the Watergate scandal. It did not work, said Riedel. The American media concentrated on the Watergate scandal, they treated the trip as a side show... and the Watergate scandal kept dripping and dripping.

Uber to expand with online cargo services

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Uber is expanding into a new field with a version of its on-demand ride application that lets truckers book cargo hauls with simple taps on smartphones.Uber Freight rolling out in the US was touted by the company as an app that matches truckers or trucking companies with loads, and streamlines payments. We take the guesswork out of finding and booking freight, which is often the most stressful part of a drivers day, Uber said in a blog post available online Friday. What used to take several hours and multiple phone calls can now be achieved with the touch of a button.Truckers signing onto the service are vetted, according to Uber, which did not provide details regarding checks done on those involved.San Francisco-based Uber made no mention of its efforts in self-driving vehicles, particularly trucks for cargo or deliveries.Uber acquired commercial transport-focused tech startup Otto late last year as the company pressed ahead with its pursuit of self-driving technology.Google parent Alphabet in February filed a lawsuit accusing Uber and its self-driving vehicle unit Otto of stealing technology from Waymo, the former Google car division. The suit contends that Waymo manager Anthony Levandowski took technical data with him when he left to launch a competing venture that went on to become Otto.Levandowski, a co-founder of 90-person startup Otto, was put in charge of Ubers efforts to develop self-driving technology for personal driving, delivery and trucking. The case is making its way through the court, but a partial injunction issued by a US district court judge ordered Uber to do everything in its power to prevent information taken from Waymo from being used at the on-demand ride company and to return all copies to Waymo, or the court, by the end of this month.

Pakistan to drag India to ICJ over Kashmir dispute: sources

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan is to drag India to International Court of Justice (ICJ) over Kashmir dispute, sources reported on Friday.Top authorities in the government are mulling to move to the United Nations (UN) court over the dispute with India for decades over Occupied Kashmir that would entail water tensions among other differences.Reportedly, Pakistan is to dispatch an ad-hoc judge to the international court while a legal team would also be formed to assist counsel in the ICJ for Pakistan, Khawar Qureshi.Sources privy to the government have reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sought recommendations of institutions concerned in this regard. The development has come in a day after the UN court ruled over Indian plea granting injunction order in death row inmate Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case. It was reported today that Pakistan has filed a plea in ICJ to have Jadhav’s case reheard within six weeks. If Pakistan moves to ICJ over Kashmir dispute, it would be the third case in the arch-rivals’ history that ICJ was approached in regards with. Earlier in 1999, Pakistan claimed USD60 million in compensation after a Pakistan Navy aircraft, flying well inside Pakistani territory, was downed by India.ICJ had then ruled in its verdict that it did not have jurisdiction to hear the case. This year, India filed a petition in the international court to seek provisional stay of Jadhav’s execution who was convicted of espionage by an impartial military court. It should be mentioned here that Pakistan has observed multiple times on several international platforms that the world community should held implement resolutions of the United Nations in the held-valley.India and Pakistan have gone to war at least thrice over the dispute in the past.
