South Africa 'concerns' after Manchester attack

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - South Africas team manager said his side had genuine concerns about remaining in England following the deadly terror attack in Manchester, but there are no immediate plans to return home. The Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack at the end of a concert by US pop star Ariana Grande at Manchester Arena on Monday that killed 22 people, including children.Britains deadliest terror attack for 12 years took place just two days before the start of a three-match one-day series between England and South Africa in the nearby city of Leeds. It is the first international fixture of a lengthy, three-month tour for South Africa that includes the June Champions Trophy and subsequent four-Test series against England. No major international cricket has taken place in Pakistan since 2009 because of security concerns following an attack, while England one-day captain Eoin Morgan and opening batsman Alex Hales refused to tour Bangladesh because of safety fears. But having received security briefings from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), whose security advisor Reg Dickason is well-respected throughout the sport, South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said his side were happy to remain in England as things stood. As you can understand we have some genuine concerns, the players are uneasy... there was a lot of chatter at the breakfast table, Moosajee told reporters at Leedss Headingley ground on Tuesday.I am happy to say weve had constant communications from the ECB and their security manager. There have been guarantees put in place that security arrangements will be supplemented, starting today. Were told there will be more visible police at the stadium, at practice sessions as well as the hotels we will reside at.Moosajee said the hotel the South Africans are booked in for in Manchester for the last Test is literally walking distance from where events unfolded last night and there has been genuine concern. The process has started to make the players reassured that arrangements are in place to keep them safe. While players had briefly talked about leaving England, Moosajee stressed: As things stand theres no mention of us even thinking of abandoning the tour. If the intelligence information tells us something else we would obviously have to reconsider.Champions Trophy tournament director Steve Elworthy was not anticipating any withdrawals. Were planning for all eight teams to be here, Elworthy said. Its critical and paramount that we deliver a safe, impressive and exciting tournament for everybody involved.

England's Anderson set for lengthy lay-off

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England spearhead James Anderson could be out of action for up to six weeks after officials announced Tuesday that the Lancashire paceman had torn his groin. The 34-year-old, Englands all-time most successful Test bowler with 467 wickets, collapsed while bowling for Lancashire against Roses rivals Yorkshire last Friday. He was unable to bowl for the rest of the match but did make an unexpected appearance as a batsman, making an unbeaten eight off seven balls towards the end of a drawn match at Old Trafford.Anderson is now set to miss the return fixture at Yorkshires Headingley headquarters while medical staff at the England and Wales Cricket Board try to determine the full extent of the injury. The experienced swing bowler no longer features for England in white-ball cricket and the first Test of the season, against South Africa at Lords, does not start until July 7, although groin injuries can take six weeks to heal.England chiefs would want Anderson to prove his fitness in one of Lancashires three further Championship fixtures before the series opener with the Proteas rather than run the risk of him breaking down during a Test match.A scan has confirmed that Lancashire and England seamer Jimmy Anderson has a tear to his right groin, said an ECB statement issued Tuesday. He will be fully assessed on Wednesday by the ECB medical team to understand the extent of his injury. He will miss Lancashires Specsavers County Championship Division One match against Yorkshire at Headingley commencing on Friday June 2.

Trump budget proposes broad Pentagon funding boost

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trumps proposed 2018 budget calls for a significant jump in the Pentagons vast budget, though it falls short of the historic spending bonanza sought by more hawkish Republicans.Pentagon budget documents released Tuesday call for $574 billion in general defense funding, with an additional $65 billion for supplemental wartime spending -- for a total of $639 billion. The proposed spending boost represents an increase of more than $50 billion -- about 10 percent -- over 2017 funding levels for the base budget, but an increase amounting to only about three percent over projections envisioned by the Obama administration.Even though the United States already spends more on defense than the next seven nations combined, some lawmakers and Pentagon officials have long bemoaned spending caps introduced in 2011 as impacting all services.Since enactment of the Budget Control Act in 2011, the world has become a more dangerous place with rising terrorism and more aggressive potential adversaries, Pentagon comptroller John Roth said. The military has during that same period of time become smaller, readiness has eroded and modernization has been deferred. Thats not a good place to be.Trump in February promised what he said would be one of the greatest military buildups in American history but hawkish Republicans have said his proposed increases are insufficient. The additional money for defense would be offset by deep cuts to the State Department, the Environmental Protection Agency and a variety of social welfare programs. The world is a very dangerous place these days, so there is a compelling justification for this budget, said Lieutenant General Anthony Ierardi when asked why Americans should accept the extra spending.

Peshawar early Ramazan moon sighting expected, KP govt helpless

Posted:

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government looks helpless in front of the private moon sighting committee headed by Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai of Masjid Qasim Khan.It is very much expected that early moon sighting of Ramazan will be repeated in Peshawar. KP government has ordered the federal government to intervene in the matter and make the privately run committee obey Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The rift between the official Ruet-e-Hilal Committee and its privately run counterpart is not new. One-day difference between first Ramazan and Eid holiday has become a usual practice over the past few years. Any different results are not expected this year either as both of these committees will hold separate meetings for moon sighting. It is hard to hope for a consensus in the making. In this regard, KP government has expressed utter helplessness. KP Auqaf Minister Habibur Rehman claimed it is the duty of federal government to develop consensus for Ramazan moon sighting between the committees. He said there is no law to resolve this issue, adding that the provincial authorities cannot arrest the Masjid Qasim Khan cleric. “Under which legal authority should we arrest Mufti Popalzai?” he asked. On the other hand, senior member of KP Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Maulana Abdul Ghafoor said he is hopeful for a joint session comprising representatives from both committees. It looks as if both the provincial and federal government made no serious for same-day Ramazan and Eid nationwide. No doubt, legal limitations also add to this difficulty.
