Pakistan eye perfect farewell for Misbah, Younis

Posted:

ROSEAU (Agencies) - With Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan walking out for a Test for the last time in their careers, Pakistan will be aiming to win the third and final Test against West Indies at the Windsor Park in Dominica to give them a victorious farewell. On the other hand, West Indies will be looking to spoil the international farewells of Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq and senior batsman Younis Khan in Wednesdays decisive third and final Test.Buoyed by a series-levelling win five days ago the hosts are in pursuit of a first Test series success in five years against a team ranked higher.Despite being routed for 81 on the final day of the second Test in Barbados, Pakistan are still in with a chance of pulling off their first-ever Test series triumph in the Caribbean with the third Test starting today (Wednesday). Its a special game for us because we have a chance to make history, said Misbah, focusing instead on the importance of the result for the team.Still, the fact that both himself and Younis will be retiring from international cricket after the match is a reality that could not be avoided. It gives us additional motivation and I hope its the same for the team as well, he explained.Sometimes the emotion will come in when you have an occasion like this but its important for us to just focus on our jobs and score runs for the team. After scoring 58 to become the first Pakistani to go past 10,000 Test runs in the first innings of the series in Jamaica, Younis has tallied just 11 runs in the next three innings. In contrast, Misbah was unbeaten on 99 in setting up the first Test win before falling for 99 in the first innings of the second Test, a disappointment he was quick to put in perspective.Ninety-nine is far better than zero, which is what I got in the second innings, he noted. If we perform up to our potential we can beat any side. We have to get our disciplines right and be at the top of our game.Following severe criticism from both camps over the surface at Kensington Oval, there was general acceptance that the pitch for the series finale appeared much better on the eve of the match despite again being virtually devoid of grass. It doesnt look too bad, was West Indies captain Jason Holders guarded verdict. It might be on the slow side to start but hopefully it quickens up as the game goes on.With Shannon Gabriel leading the fast bowlers demolition of the opposition for just 81 to earn a 106-run win less than a week earlier, no changes are anticipated to the hosts bowling attack. However the top-order batting remains a concern even if the selectors opt not to tinker with a winning line-up.Pakistan had already decided on their final eleven 24 hours before the start but Misbah chose not to reveal it.After enjoying tremendous success in the limited-over matches earlier in the tour, leg-spinner Shadab Khan struggled on Test debut in Barbados with match figures of one for 145.He is expected to make way for fast-medium bowler Hasan Ali in support of fellow pacers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Abbas.Pakistans greatest bowling threat remains Yasir Shah though, the leg-spinners match haul of nine for 177 in the losing effort in the second Test giving him 17 so far in the series.Prolonged showers two days before the match disrupted preparations and despite a scorching eve of the fixture, a forecast for more rain raises the prospect of the elements playing a significant role in the final result.Probable teams: Pakistan: Misbah ul Haq (captain), Azhar Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, Babar Azam, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed (wicketkeeper), Mohammad Amir, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Abbas.West Indies: Jason Holder (captain), Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Vishaul Singh, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich (wicketkeeper), Devendra Bishoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shannon Gabriel.

Test skipper Root eager for more ODI bowling

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Test captain Joe Root is keen to play his part with the ball as well as the bat when tournament hosts England bid to win next months Champions Trophy.Root, Englands number three in a one-day international team captained by Eoin Morgan, is one of the worlds leading batsmen in all formats. The Yorkshireman was in the runs during last weeks 2-0 ODI series win at home to Ireland, making 49 at Bristol and 73 at Lords. But the occasional off-spinner also starred with the ball, taking five wickets across the two matches, including an ODI best three for 52 in Sundays encounter at Lords.England relied on leg-spinner Adil Rashid as their lone specialist against Ireland, with Root providing spin back-up to his county colleague. That meant there was no place for Moeen Ali, an off-spinning all-rounder, in either of the matches against Ireland. There are those who feel Root is just as likely to take wickets in a white-ball context as Ali, primarily a batsman.Sundays match also saw Root bowl his maximum permitted 10 overs for the first time in his ODI career and he would have no qualms about repeating the experience following his three-wicket haul. Its so much better than scoring runs he said while speaking at sponsors NatWest banks Cricket has no boundaries campaign on Tuesday.I can see why some of the bowlers get so excited at times, because its great fun.England have three more ODIs later this month at home to South Africa ahead of the Champions Trophy and the Proteas powerful batting line-up could prove an acid test of Roots usefulness as a part-time bowler. We have so many options and such depth within the squad, he said. If I can play that role, I hope that gives us a bit more strength in other departments if need be.Root, however, stopped short of classifying himself as a fully-fledged all-rounder.I suppose its just if Im required... and if someone doesnt get hold of me as well, he said. A few things that I tried worked - and I hope I can continue to develop those variations, as small as they might be, and still be effective.A big part of my bowling is the mental side of it, trying to work out the conditions, the batters, the risk-reward in what might work in terms of field placings - and see if theyll take a gamble against me.It is possible Root could be rested from Englands three Twenty20s with South Africa to play in a round of pink-ball County Championship matches to gain experience ahead of the countrys inaugural day/night Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston starting on August 17.But the 26-year-old dismissed suggestions that he had any intention of retiring from Twenty20 internationals because of his increased workload as Test captain.Ive got no intention of resting from Twenty20 cricket, he said. So as much as possible, Ill be making sure Im available to play.

Sri Lanka evicts thousands of wasps ahead of Modi visit

COLOMBO: (AFP) - Sri Lanka has taken the unusual step of clearing thousands of wasps from a tea plantation to ensure Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not stung during his upcoming visit.Police in Hatton, 125 kilometres (78 miles) east of Colombo, hired a private company to remove the wasps from its picturesque tea fields which Modi will tour with his entourage on Friday. The private Bee Protection Organisation said they removed nests from two locations to ensure the Indian visitors could land in helicopters without stirring up trouble with the aggressive locals. There were two big nests near two helipads. At the time of landing, helicopters can disturb the wasps and they could sting people in that area, the head of wasp removal unit Tissa Bandara Thambavita told AFP.We have cleared the nests and declared the area safe for the VVIPs to visit. The winged evictees were removed humanely and relocated to a nearby jungle, Thambavita added. A team will remain on site to ensure those kicked out do not return before Modi touches down.It will be the second time in just over two years the Indian leader has visited neighbouring Sri Lanka. He will return Thursday as chief guest at the Buddhist celebration of Vesak, which marks the birth, enlightenment and the passing of the Buddha.Modi will address a Buddhist conference in Colombo before travelling by helicopter to the central tea country to open an India-funded hospital and address Indian-origin plantation workers. He will also visit Sri Lankas holiest Buddhist shrine, the Temple of the Tooth, before leaving Friday evening.Sri Lanka police have said they will deploy more than 6,000 officers to provide additional security during Modis overnight visit.

DONETSK, Ukraine: (AFP) - More than 10,000 people waving Russian flags and carrying portraits of Stalin watched tanks roll through Ukraines de facto rebel capital Donetsk on Tuesday in celebration of the Soviet Unions defeat of Nazi Germany. The display of military might used by the Moscow-backed insurgents in their three-year conflict against government forces violated the terms of a long-ignored 2015 peace deal.Donetsk straddles a demarcation line in the industrial east of Ukraine from which the big guns from both sides were meant to have been withdrawn almost two years ago.An AFP reporter counted 45 pieces of heavy military equipment -- ranging from a lone World War II-era tank to its modern versions used in the current war as well as rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns -- rumble through the citys main street.Donetsk separatist leader Alexander Zakharchenko led a march of about 1,000 fighters who held up a long banner painted the black and orange colours of Russias patriotic Saint Georges ribbon.Others carried portraits of warlords killed since Europes only war broke out in April 2014 and claimed more than 10,000 lives.Zakharchenko told the crowd that May 9 is the holiest day for us all.Immortal regimentThe other side of the frontline saw Ukrainian authorities join European nations in marking the end of World War II on May 8, 1945.The decision was meant to underscore Ukraines split from Russia and its embrace of the West after the 2014 pro-EU revolution. We will no longer celebrate this holiday along the Russian scenario, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told a group of soldiers. But Kiev police said 3,000 people carrying photographs of relatives who fought in what the Soviet Union called The Great Patriotic War still marched through the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday.Participants of the so-called Immortal Regiment march that was first staged in Russia in 2012 were confronted by a small group of nationalists who pelted them with several smoke bombs before being restrained by police. This march is being staged in Kiev so that it can be shown on Kremlin TV, right-wing protester Oleksandra Podkopayeva told AFP.Ukrainian media reported that a small fight broke out between the Kiev marchers and their nationalist foes near the Eternal Flame monument honouring fallen soldiers. The atmosphere was calmer on Donetsks central Lenin Square.Entire families watched the hardware roll by and cheered. It is time to finish it already.

US small businesses worry about trade policy, too

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Small business owners trying to break into international markets say US trade policies and the strong dollar affect their ability to export, states a report released Tuesday. The exchange rate has been a big one, said Jamie Deering, whose parents started Deering Banjo in 1975 in San Diego, California. Exports of the iconic American folk instrument account for 30 percent of the companys business. Many of the 16 small businesses featured in the report entitled The New Faces of American Trade also cite the strong US dollar as a factor weakening their potential to export, a complaint they share with larger manufacturers.A strong dollar makes US products more expensive, and thus less competitive, in overseas markets.Wei-Shin Lai, who with her husband Jason Wolfe invented SleepPhones -- wearable headphones in a flexible headband -- said the company had to pull out of the Boots convenience store chain in Britain because they could no longer compete due to the unfavorable exchange rate.It became untenable for us to make money, she said at a forum on the report Tuesday. Her company is based in the struggling Rust Belt city of Erie, Pennsylvania. The report, produced by the Global Innovation Forum, a nonprofit connecting small businesses with policymakers and resources to join the global marketplace, examined how these companies use internet resources to expand their export presence.Like bigger companies, small businesses favor open trade and consistent rules. And trade negotiations are key to keeping markets overseas open to American products. If were not at the table another voice will step in, Lai said. We need to be there, she said of international trade negotiations. Deering told the forum about changes in rules on exporting rosewood that have forced changes in production procedures, since the company uses rosewood inlay on their banjos.LoveBook, which produces customized individual books as gifts for a loved ones, has resorted to partnering with companies overseas to print their product, an arrangement which in many cases is easier than dealing with export rules.Co-founder Rob Patterson said 40 percent of sales from the Michigan-based company are exports, to 148 countries, and because of the delays involved in exports local sourcing makes sense.

'We're not from Beverly Hills' - Ramos warns Atletico

Posted:

MADRID: (AFP) - Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos insists the European champions will not be cowered by an intimidating atmosphere as they visit Atletico Madrids Vicente Calderon for the final time on Wednesday.Los Blancos are looking to seal their place in the Champions League final once more and enjoy a commanding 3-0 first leg lead. And Ramos hit back at the simplification of the rivalry between the two Madrid giants as Reals riches against Atleticos hard work.It seems like here we have grown up in Beverly Hills, said Ramos on Tuesday. Here there are people from humble backgrounds too.The sacrifice is what fills you with desire to win.An already intense rivalry has reached new levels in recent seasons as under Diego Simeone Atleticos status and ability to challenge Real has grown. However, Atletico have consistently fallen short against Real in the Champions League.Unless they pull off a remarkable comeback, Simeones men will bow out of European competition against their fiercest rivals for the fourth consecutive season. If I needed to motivate the players for a game like tomorrow I would need to leave the club, said Simeone.Tomorrow we face a very tough opponent that beat us 3-0 at their home, that beat us 3-0 in the first half of the season in the league and in two finales, one on penalties and the other equalising in the 93rd minute. It is clear it is a great challenge. However, the size of Atleticos task is illustrated by the fact that Real have scored in all of their last 60 games stretching back over a year.We have to defend well tomorrow. That will allow us to be in the game as long as possible, insisted Simeone on the threat of a Real away goal that would force Atletico to score five.I know what we are capable of. I know these players, Ive known them for five-and-a-half years and I have no doubt they are going to play well.No vertigoEven by their standards, Real are on the verge of completing the most glorious season in the clubs decorated history.Should Zinedine Zidanes men complete a La Liga and Champions League double, it will be Reals first since 1957/58.Moreover, they could become the first side in the Champions League era to retain the trophy. And Ramos insisted he is relishing a challenging end to the campaign rather than wilting under the pressure. There is no feeling of vertigo. The contrary, it is in our own hands, added the Spanish international. The good part of the season is coming, there are two weeks left and well see what happens in the end.I would settle to be in this position every year. After 50 years at the Calderon, Atletico move to the new 67,000 capacity Wanda Metropolitano next season. And Atletico captain Gabi admitted giving their historic home a memorable send-off adds even extra spice to Wednesdays clash. It is an even extra motive to think and feel the possibility of a comeback, even though we have an adverse result, he said. The other day at the Bernabeu after losing 3-0 all you heard were the Atletico fans. It gave me goosebumps. The fans shows us so much love and support, we have to show we can match their standards.Zidane is expected to resort back to the side that started the first leg after making nine changes for Saturdays 4-0 win at Granada bar the introduction of Nacho for the injured Dani Carvajal at right-back.Gareth Bale remains sidelined with a calf injury.Atleticos injury crisis at right-back is expected to be resolved by the return of Juanfran after three weeks out.Otherwise, Simeone is also expected to name the same side that started the first leg.
