India to boycott China summit due to unrest in held Kashmir

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India signalled it will boycott a summit in Beijing on Sunday on boosting Chinas trade links to the rest of the world, setting off a new dispute between the neighbours. The two-day summit is expected to be attended by Russias President Vladimir Putin, Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and 26 other leaders.Without announcing a formal boycott, an Indian foreign ministry spokesman highlighted concerns about Chinas so-called One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative, a massive undertaking to link the country with Africa, Asia and Europe through a network of ports, railways, roads and industrial zones. The spokesman also reaffirmed Indias opposition to a Chinese-Pakistani economic corridor that runs through the occupied Kashmir.Guided by our principled position in the matter, we have been urging China to engage in a meaningful dialogue on its connectivity initiative, said foreign ministry spokesman Gopal Baglay in a strongly worded statement released late Saturday. We are awaiting a positive response from the Chinese side, Baglay added.Regarding the so-called China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is being projected as the flagship project of the... OBOR, the international community is well aware of Indias position. No country can accept a project that ignores its core concerns on sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor passes through Gilgit and Baltistan in Azad Kashmir.Indias is also concerned because the 3,000 kilometre (1,850 mile) corridor ends in the strategic Pakistani port of Gwadar. India fears the port could become a Chinese naval base facing its navy in Mumbai.India have had a series of niggles over the past year.China has opposed Indias entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the club of countries sensitive nuclear technology, and UN action against a militant leader, Masood Azhar.China in turn protested after India last month let Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama visit Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims. The foreign ministry spokesman said India had been formally invited to the Beijing summit. But he said India believes that connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognised international norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality. There have to be principles of financial responsibility to avoid projects that would create unsustainable debt burden for communities.India insists that connectivity projects must be pursued in a manner that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity, the spokesman said.Chinese officials had earlier said they expected India to send an official delegation to the summit.

Trump sees 'fast' decision over new FBI director

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Donald Trump said Saturday he would act quickly to appoint a new FBI director following his controversial dismissal earlier this week of James Comey -- a move that was still reverberating around Washington.Trumps administration -- embroiled in a deepening crisis over the sacking and its shifting explanation of events -- is interviewing the first candidates for the post on Saturday, US media reported. We can make a fast decision, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One before flying to southern Virginia, where he delivered his first commencement address as president at Liberty University, an evangelical Christian school. The White House has provided no set timeline for the process of replacing Comey.Asked if the decision or an announcement could take place before he leaves for Saudi Arabia on Friday, Trump said: Even that is possible. I think the process is going to go quickly.Theyve been vetted over their lifetime, essentially, he said of the candidates, describing them as very well-known, highly respected, really talented people, before adding: And thats what we want for the FBI.On Saturday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy Rod Rosenstein were interviewing acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, Texas Senator John Cornyn, former federal prosecutor Michael Garcia and former assistant attorney general Alice Fisher, The New York Times reported, citing a source familiar with the meetings. They may also speak to at least one more candidate: Adam Lee, who heads the FBIs office in Richmond, Virginia, according to Fox News. They are among a dozen candidates being considered for the job.- Who are the candidates? -===========================The choice of a new FBI director seen as independent from the White House will be closely scrutinized as Trump faces an avalanche of criticism for firing Comey, the man in charge of a criminal probe into his campaigns possible ties to Russia. The 49-year-old McCabe, a career FBI agent, has taken part in a number of high-profile investigations, including probes into the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and the attacks against US installations in Benghazi, Libya in 2012.McCabe contradicted Trump this week, telling lawmakers that Comey enjoyed widespread support among the FBIs rank and file, and that the probe into alleged Russian meddling in the election was a highly significant investigation.Cornyn, the number two Republican in the Senate, served as Texas attorney general before his election to the Senate in 2002.Garcia served as assistant secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and US attorney under former president George W. Bush.Fisher headed the Justice Departments criminal division, also under Bush.Other candidates include former New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly, former Republican senator Kelly Ayotte, and South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor who headed the Benghazi investigation in the House.Trumps nominee must be confirmed in the Senate, where Democrats and some Republicans have fiercely criticized Comeys firing, which came on Tuesday. FBI directors are appointed for a 10-year term. The president is reported to have asked Comey whether he could be loyal to him during a dinner meeting in February shortly after his inauguration.Comey promised only that he could be honest, The New York Times reported.Trump denied that account in a Fox News interview on Friday.Addressing the graduating students at Liberty University on Saturday, Trump appeared to defend his leadership, saying that doing what is right requires a willingness to face criticism from those who lack the same courage.Nothing is easier or more pathetic than being a critic, he said, because they are people that cant get the job done.

Microsoft re-releases security update after cyberattacks

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Microsoft has taken the unusual step of re-releasing security updates for some older versions of its Windows platforms to counter a massive global wave of cyber ransomware attacks. In a blog post, the US tech giant recalled that it had published an update in March to address the weakness exploited in Fridays attacks, a security flaw exposed in documents leaked from the US National Security Agency. The attacks struck targets in dozens of countries, ranging from British hospitals to Russian banks. Those who have Windows Update enabled are protected against attacks on this vulnerability, the company said in the post published on its website. For those organizations who have not yet applied the security update, we suggest you immediately deploy Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010.The so-called Wannacry virus notably attacks Windows XP, which in principle has not been supported by Microsoft since 2014.Some of our customers are running versions of Windows that no longer receive mainstream support. That means those customers will not have received the above mentioned security update released in March, it said.Given the potential impact to customers and their businesses, we made the decision to make the security update for platforms in custom support only, Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003, broadly available. The companys latest operating system, Windows 10, was not targeted in the attack, Microsoft said.We are working with customers to provide additional assistance as this situation evolves, the company said.

CA threat to not pay players in wages row report

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Cricket Australia (CA) has threatened its contracted players they will not be paid beyond June 30 unless they accept the governing bodys proposed overhaul of player remuneration, a report said Saturday. The escalating tension between CA and players reached new heights after chief executive James Sutherland told them in a blunt email to accept its offer.Fairfax Media reported that Sutherland sent the email on Friday to Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) chief Alistair Nicholson who then forwarded it to players around Australia. The email casts doubt on what team Australia could field after June 30, with a two-Test series scheduled in August in Bangladesh, ahead of a home Ashes showdown with England later in the year, Fairfax Media said. The email read: CA is not contemplating alternative contracting arrangements to pay players beyond 30 June if their contracts have expired. In the absence of the ACA negotiating a new MOU (memorandum of understanding), players with contracts expiring in 2016-17 will not have contracts for 2017-18... if a new pay deal is not struck. The ACA had moved on Friday to enter mediation with CA over the pay negotiations, which show no sign of resolution. In the email Sutherland told Nicholson: The ACA is fast running out of time to engage with CAs proposal and optimise the outcome for players. In the coming weeks, CA and states will be making contract offers to players. The terms of these contracts will be consistent with CAs proposal, and contracts will be conditional on a new MOU being in place.Australias top cricketers will effectively be free agents from July 1 unless a deal is made.Sutherland has accused the ACA of having unfairly placed current players in a difficult position.Australias players union has rejected CAs offer, saying it is unfair and disrespectful.Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins Saturday tweeted on social media in response:Players are staying strong fairshare and former Test paceman Mitchell Johnson added:Players past & present will stay strong fairshare.
