Nigeria president vows support for freed Chibok girls

Posted:

ABUJA (AFP) - Nigerias President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday vowed to help to 82 schoolgirls who have been freed from more than three years of Boko Haram captivity after a prisoner swap. The girls -- who were among more than 200 kidnapped in 2014 from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, northeast Nigeria -- travelled to the capital Abuja a day after their release to meet Buhari.I cannot express in a few words how happy I am to welcome our dear girls back to freedom, Buhari said in a statement, pledging that the presidency would personally supervise authorities charged with ensuring the girls health, education, security and general well-being.Presidential aide Bashir Ahmad tweeted a photograph of the girls, most of whom were sitting on the floor of Buharis official residence, as the president sat in an armchair dressed in white traditional robes. The meeting came shortly before Buhari was whisked out of the country on Sunday evening after weeks of concern over his health, heading to London for follow-up medical consultation, according to his spokesman Femi Adesina. The teenagers, who had been taken to a medical facility for checks after arriving in Abuja by military helicopter, met with the president for about 45 minutes, said an AFP reporter at the scene.Adesina said they had now been handed over to those who will supervise their rehabilitation. He did not comment on how many imprisoned members of Boko Haram -- whose fight to create a hardline Islamic state in northeast Nigeria has left at least 20,000 dead since 2009 -- had been released in the swap. But AFP understands at least three suspected senior commanders, all of them Chadian nationals, were handed over.Information Minister Lai Mohammed said he could not confirm claims that as many five militants were released. The girls arrived from the northeastern town of Banki, on the border with Cameroon, and were met at the airport by Buharis chief of staff Abba Kyari.Welcome our girls, welcome our sisters, we are glad to have you back, Kyari told them, describing it as a very joyous moment.A military source said one of the girls was carrying a baby with her, a boy of less than two years. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it facilitated the safe return of the girls as a neutral intermediary and tweeted photographs of girls boarding a military helicopter. Many of the students wore colourful akara print dresses, visibly tired from their ordeal. The presidency had announced late Saturday that months of talks with the jihadists had yielded results some six months after 21 other Chibok girls were freed with the help of the ICRC and the Swiss government.Boko Haram fighters stormed the girls school on the evening of April 14, 2014, and kidnapped 276 teenaged girls who were preparing to sit high school exams.Fifty-seven managed to escape in the hours that followed but the remaining 219 were held by the group.Boko Harams leader Abubakar Shekau claimed in a video message that they had converted to Islam. The audacious kidnapping brought the insurgency to world attention, triggering global outrage that galvanised support from the former US first lady Michelle Obama and Hollywood stars. The girls have become a symbol of Nigerias brutal conflict. Last month, parents and supporters marked the three-year anniversary of the abduction, describing the situation as an unending nightmare.Enoch Mark, a Christian pastor whose two daughters were among those kidnapped, said of the latest releases: This is good news to us. We have been waiting for this day.We hope the remaining girls will soon be released.Accounting for three other girls who have since been found, a total of 113 Chibok girls are now missing, although Shekau claimed last August that some had been killed in military air strikes.Boko Haram has used kidnapping as a weapon of war, seizing thousands of women and children, and forcibly recruiting young men and boys into their ranks. In a less publicised attack in November 2014, some 300 children were among about 500 people kidnapped from the town of Damasak, on the border with Niger, in the far north of Borno state. Most are still missing.

Euro rallies after Macron wins French presidency

Posted:

WELLINGTON (AFP) - The euro rallied to $1.1023 from $1.0998 in early Asia-Pacific forex trading Monday after pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron won the French presidency, scoring a resounding victory over far-right rival Marine Le Pen.The single currency reached its highest level since November on Macrons win, but the gains were modest compared to the reaction following his first round victory last month with markets largely pricing in Le Pens defeat. However, the 39-year-old former investment bankers victory effectively eliminates any risk of France leaving the single currency bloc. Its being interpreted as positive for risk sentiment as well as positive for the eurozone, Imre Speizer, senior markets strategist at Westpac NZ told AFP.I think what the Europeans have said in that corner of Europe is a resounding No to populism.Initial estimates showed Macron winning between 65 percent and 66.1 percent of the ballots -- a higher than expected score - and Le Pen scoring between 33.9 percent and 35 percent.Unknown three years ago, Macron is now poised to become one of Europes most powerful leaders, bringing with him a hugely ambitious agenda of political and economic reform for France and the European Union. But many analysts are sceptical about Macrons ability to win a parliamentary majority, meaning he might have to form a coalition of lawmakers committed to his agenda.Furthermore, his economic agenda, particularly plans to weaken labour regulations to fight stubbornly high unemployment, are likely to face fierce resistance from trade unions and his leftist opponents. He also inherits a country which is still under a state of emergency following a string of Islamist-inspired attacks since 2015 that have killed more than 230 people.Le Pen, 48, had portrayed the ballot as a contest between Macron and the globalists -- in favour of open trade, immigration and shared sovereignty -- and her patriotic vision of strong borders and national identities.

Bairstow stars as England win Ireland series

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Jonny Bairstows quickfire 72 not out set up Englands 85-run win over Ireland in the second one-day international at Lords on Sunday.Victory saw England take the two-match series 2-0 after they had launched their build-up to next months Champions Trophy tournament on home soil with a comfortable seven-wicket win at Bristol on Friday.Ireland, in their first ODI at the Home of Cricket, fought hard with the ball in front of a 22,000-strong crowd. But, as was the case Friday, they suffered a batting collapse after a promising start and were dismissed for 243 chasing 329 to win.Ireland captain William Porterfield did, however, make 82, the top score of the match, as his side, who could be granted Test status next month, restored some pride after being bowled out for just 126 in 33 overs at Bristol.England risked squandering a strong position when their Dublin-born captain Eoin Morgan (76) and Joe Root (73) fell in quick succession following a third-wicket stand of 140 to leave the hosts 213 for four. But Bairstow and fellow Yorkshireman Adil Rashid shared a sixth-wicket stand of 88 in just 46 balls that helped take England to 328 for six.Their county colleague Root was named man-of-the-match after also taking ODI-best figures of three for 52 with his occasional off-spin.If weve got guys who can bowl a few overs then its great, said Root at the presentation ceremony. Its been nice to get a few runs, a good stepping stone towards the Champions Trophy.Morgan added: We should have been more clinical, one of us should have got a big score, but Jonny and Adil led us home really well.Meanwhile Porterfield was proud of how Ireland bounced back from their Bristol battering.I thought we were much improved today, he said. After Friday it would have been easy to hide away, but we took a step forward.Porterfield opted to bowl first after winning the toss in overcast conditions that promised to assist his seamers. His decision was all the more understandable given Irelands embarrassing batting at Bristol.Tim Murtagh, one of several Middlesex players on show, took Irelands first wicket Sunday when he bowled Alex Hales (32) with a delivery that nipped back up the Lords slope.Left-hander Morgan slashed Kevin OBrien over long-off for six and also deftly late cut the medium-pacer for four. However, on 39, he nearly played to off-spinner Stirling only for the ball to touch the stumps without dislodging a bail.Root scored his runs in typically calm but brisk fashion on his way to a 57-ball fifty including five fours.Morgan followed him to the landmark, off 49 balls with two fours and two sixes. Both batsmen chipped to extra-cover off pacemen Peter Chase and Barry McCarthy respectively.Test wicket-keeper Bairstow, playing as a specialist batsman, led a counter-attack, belting McCarthy high over long-on for one of three sixes in a 44-ball innings also featuring seven fours.Bairstows charge helped England pile on 61 runs in their last four overs.Paul Stirling, like Morgan playing on his Middlesex home ground, launched Irelands reply with 48 at better than a run-a-ball.Stirling, at what was now a sun-drenched Lords, drove left-armer David Willey for three fours off successive balls in just the second over of Irelands reply. But his 42-ball innings, ended when he edged Jake Ball to wicket-keeper Sam Billings.Umpire Tim Robinson originally ruled not out but the former England batsmans decision was overturned on review.Stirlings exit was the start of an that saw three Ireland wickets lost for 19 runs.Root, as happened at Bristol, struck in his first over by bowling former England batsman Ed Joyce.Kevin OBrien briefly revived memories of his blistering hundred in Irelands thrilling 2011 World Cup win over England in Bangalore when he struck sixes off Rashid and Root before he holed out for 18.Porterfield, in sight of a century, tried to revive his side but was bowled attempting an extravagant lap-sweep off fast bowler Mark Wood, who ended the match by dismissing George Dockrell in the 47th over.

Macron elected French president: estimates

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron won Frances landmark presidential election, first estimates showed Sunday, heading off a fierce challenge from the far-right in a pivotal vote for the future of the divided country and Europe. The victory caps an extraordinary rise for the 39-year-old former investment banker, who will become the countrys youngest-ever leader. He has promised to heal a fractured and demoralised country after a vicious campaign that has exposed deep economic and social divisions, as well as tensions around identity and immigration.Initial estimates showed Macron winning between 65.5 percent and 66.1 percent of ballots ahead of Le Pen on between 33.9 percent and 34.5 percent.Unknown three years ago, Macron is now poised to become one of Europes most powerful leaders, bringing with him a hugely ambitious agenda of political and economic reform for France and the European Union. The result will resonate worldwide and particularly in Brussels and Berlin where leaders will breathe a sigh of relief that Le Pens anti-EU, anti-globalisation programme has been defeated. After Britains vote last year to leave the EU and Donald Trumps victory in the US, the French election had been widely watched as a test of how high a tide of right-wing nationalism would rise.Le Pen, 48, had portrayed the ballot as a contest between Macron and the globalists -- in favour of open trade, immigration and shared sovereignty -- and her patriotic vision of strong borders and national identities.Outgoing President Francois Hollande, who plucked Macron from obscurity to name him minister in 2014, said voting is always an important, significant act, heavy with consequences as he cast his vote.Major obstacles aheadMacron will now face huge challenges as he attempts to enact his domestic agenda of cutting state spending, easing labour laws, boosting education in deprived areas and extending new protections to the self-employed.The philosophy and literature lover is inexperienced, has no political party and must try to fashion a working parliamentary majority after legislative elections next month. His En Marche movement -- neither of the left, nor right -- has vowed to field candidates in all 577 constituencies, with half of them women and half of them newcomers to politics. We will reconstruct right to the end Well keep our promise of renewal he said during his last campaign meeting in the southern city of Albi on Thursday. Many analysts are sceptical about his ability to win a majority with En Marche candidates alone, meaning he would have to form a coalition of lawmakers committed to his agenda -- something new under Frances current constitution.Furthermore, his economic agenda, particularly plans to weaken labour regulations to fight stubbornly high unemployment, are likely to face fierce resistance from trade unions and his leftist opponents. He also inherits a country which is still in a state of emergency following a string of Islamist-inspired attacks since 2015 that have killed more than 230 people.Rollercoaster electionThe vote Sunday followed one of the most unpredictable election campaigns in modern history marked by scandal, repeated surprises and a last-minute hacking attack on Macron.Hundreds of thousands of emails and documents stolen from his campaign were dumped online on Friday and then spread by anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, leading the candidate to call it an attempt at democratic destabilisation.Frances election authority said publishing the documents could be a criminal offence, a warning flouted by Macrons opponents and far-right activists online. It was the latest twist in an election that has consistently wrong-footed observers as angry voters chose to eject establishment figures, including one-time favourite Francois Fillon, a rightwing ex-prime minister.Unpopular Hollande was the first to bow to the rebellious mood in December as he declared he would be the first sitting president not to seek re-election in the French republic, founded in 1958.In the first round of the presidential election on April 23, Macron topped the vote with 24.01 percent, followed by Le Pen on 21.30 percent, in a crowded field of 11 candidates. The results revealed Macron was favoured among wealthier, better educated citizens in cities, while Le Pen drew support in the countryside as well as poverty-hit areas in the south and rustbelt northeast.

Merkel's party scores strong win in state poll test

Posted:

KIEL, Germany: (AFP) - Chancellor Angela Merkels conservatives secured a strong win Sunday in state polls in northern Germany, early results showed, lending a boost to her bid to retain power in Septembers national elections.Voters in the small, northern state of Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea handed her CDU party 34 percent, while the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) clinched 27 percent, according to public broadcaster ZDF.Another public broadcaster ARD gave the CDU 33 percent and the SPD 26 percent. The results marked a blow for the Social Democrats who had earlier this year seen a surge in support since new leader Martin Schulz was chosen in February. But this enthusiasm appeared to be fading, and Schulzs supporters are increasingly fearful that the momentum he had been surfing will not carry him into the chancellery, which Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have held since 2005.The blow to the Social Democrats confidence came one week ahead of a far bigger regional vote in their stronghold of North Rhine-Westphalia, also Germanys most populous state.SPD deputy chief Ralf Stegner called Sundays result disappointing and a bitter day for Social Democrats in Schleswig-Holstein.Merkels CDU meanwhile was confidently looking to next Sundays polls.A good election result gives us motivation to go on fighting, said lawmaker Michael Grosse-Broemer, who heads the CDU parliamentary group in the Bundestag.Merkels party has seen a comeback, after losing a string of state elections over the past two years as voters punished the German leader for her liberal refugee policy that allowed more than one million asylum seekers into Germany since 2015.But with the pace of new arrivals sharply slowing, surveys show the conservatives gaining round. The populist AfD (Alternative for Germany), which has railed against the migrant influx, scrapped through on Sunday with 5.5 percent support, winning its first seats in the state parliament in Kiel, despite a vicious falling-out between moderates and hardliners inside the party. The result was however a far worse showing than at the end of last year, when it was the third most popular party nationwide. In good handsBeyond its significance as the last-but-one regional election before the September general elections, there were plenty of local peculiarities in Sundays vote.Popular SPD state premier Torsten Albig, 53, has led a coalition of SPD, Greens, and local Danish minority party SSW since 2012.His CDU challenger Daniel Guenther is 10 years younger and has been an energetic opposition leader at the regional parliament. The centre-right group there has sparked debate across Germany in recent years with populist proposals like requiring pork to be served in school canteens -- a nod to voters fearful of Islams influence on public life. This years campaign has seen battles over education, policing and roads, a top concern in a state with a population of 2.8 million thinly spread across almost 16,000 square kilometres.Another battleground is wind farm construction near residential areas -- no small matter in a windy coastal region whose turbines are a key element in Germanys energy transition away from nuclear and fossil fuels. Both major parties have sent their heaviest hitters to Schleswig-Holstein in recent days, with Schulz making appearances in Kiel and Luebeck Thursday. But his interventions have done little to counteract criticism that the former president of the European Parliament has so far failed to offer concrete attacks against Merkel and the right.Schulz has an uphill battle ahead to defeat Merkel, a leader so popular that one CDU election poster in 2013 simply showed her fingers clasped in their habitual diamond shape alongside the slogan Germanys Future In Good Hands.

Hope for Arsenal as Wenger breaks Mourinho hex

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Arsene Wenger bested Jose Mourinho in the Premier League at the 13th attempt as Arsenal beat Manchester United 2-0 on Sunday to revive their challenge for Champions League qualification.Quick-fire second-half goals by Granit Xhaka and United old boy Danny Welbeck at the Emirates Stadium condemned the visitors to their first defeat in 26 league games, since a 4-0 thrashing at Chelsea on October 23.Arsenal remain sixth, six points behind Manchester City, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League berth, but they are now just two points below fifth-place United and retain games in hand on both Manchester teams.Wenger overcame Mourinhos Chelsea in the 2015 Community Shield, but this was the first time he had got the better of his old foe with league points at stake. While the odds remain stacked against Arsenal, they will approach their final four matches with hope intact that they may yet squeeze into the Champions League for the 20th season running. For United, the Europa League now looks even more like their best hope of securing Champions League football for next season.Mourinho made no fewer than eight changes to the team that won 1-0 at Celta Vigo last Thursday, an advantage United will hope to defend in this Thursdays semi-final return leg at Old Trafford.Matteo Darmian, Ander Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were the only players to keep their places from Uniteds win in Vigo. The shake-up yielded a full debut for 19-year-old Axel Tuanzebe, who lined up at right-back but was charged with the task of following Alexis Sanchez wherever he went. With Darmian shadowing Mesut Ozil on the other half of the pitch, Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata -- back after a seven-week lay-off with a groin injury -- found themselves playing as auxiliary wing-backs.The visitors had two early sights of goal, Wayne Rooney heading over and Anthony Martial drawing a near-post parry from Petr Cech, but it was Arsenal who made most of the running.Persisting with their new 3-4-2-1 shape, the hosts were allowed to advance deep into United territory and chances soon arrived.Xhakas stroke of fortuneAaron Ramsey drew a smart save from David de Gea in the ninth minute, his drilled effort from an inside-right position obliging the Spaniard to drop to his right and palm the ball behind.Welbeck twice threatened, only to be thwarted by blocks from Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain warmed De Geas palms with a deflected effort from 25 yards.A lapse in concentration from Rob Holding almost gifted United a goal just beyond the half-hour.His blind pass from wide on the Arsenal right rolled straight into the path of Rooney, but Cech raced from his line to produce a sprawling block. The second half was trundling along at the same, fairly pedestrian pace before two goals in the space of three minutes dropped victory into Arsenals lap. They took the lead in the 54th minute thanks to a huge stroke of fortune as Xhakas speculative 25-yard strike smacked into Herreras turned back and looped over the despairing dive of De Gea.Before United had had time to clear their heads, it was 2-0.Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is thriving at right wing-back, shaped a cross into the box and Welbeck met it on the edge of the six-yard box with a header that cannoned into the net via the underside of the bar.Mourinho sent for reinforcements, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford joining the fray in place of Mkhitaryan and the hapless Herrera. But Arsenal continued to boss possession and United came no closer to reducing the arrears than a Rooney free-kick -- one of several long-range efforts by the visiting skipper -- that Cech turned behind.Mourinho gave a debut to 20-year-old midfielder Scott McTominay in the closing stages, but there was little else for United to cherish.
