Bangladesh confident of Champions Trophy chances

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - Bangladesh still have two more warm-up matches before their Champions Trophy opener but captain Mashrafe Mortaza admits their five-wicket victory over New Zealand sends them to England with confidence high. The warm-up games will be important, wickets will be different from here but we will learn something from the games against Pakistan and India, so they are two big games, said Mortaza,We missed out in the first game against Ireland and the first game against New Zealand was tough but we did really well in last two games and confidence is high at the moment.New Zealand, after half centuries from skipper Tom Latham (84), Neil Broom (63) and Ross Taylor (60 not out), slumped from 208 for three to finish on 270 for eight while in their winning reply Bangladesh soared from 199 for five to 271 for five, reaching their target with 10 balls to spare. The stars in the sixth wicket partnership were Mushfiqur Rahim who finished 45 not out from 45 balls and Mahmudullah with 46 not out from just 36 balls with six fours and a six which included his 3,000 one-day international run in his 141st match.Mahmudullah is very experienced, said his captain. You cant buy experience and in our batting side we also have Tamim and Shakib, who is not in the best mood but Im sure he will come back and Mushy and Mahmudullah are also in the runs so hopefully we can go on from here.Latham was named man of the series after adding to the century he scored against Ireland in their previous game, but he praised the players who came into this series to replace those still at the Indian Premier League.Guys not usually in the side have stepped up like Hamish Bennett, Scott Kuggeleijn and Colin Munro, they all played a part throughout the series and thats good for the depth of New Zealand cricket, he said.Weve two more games and the squad will change (he hands over the captaincy to Kane Williamson) so it gives us time to gel together as a group, but the cricket we have played in this series has been pretty good and it will stand us in good stead for the Champions Trophy and the first game against Australia. But Latham refused to admit that Bangladesh have the upper hand when the teams meet again in Cardiff on June 9.Credit to Bangladesh today, they batted very well and paced their innings perfectly, he said.We couldnt get over the line but we beat them last week and when we play again in the last group game in the Champions Trophy we have to start again and so do they.

Football: Pogba sends grieving Man Utd to emotional Europa triumph

Posted:

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Paul Pogba dedicated victory to the victims of this weeks Manchester terror attack after propelling Manchester United towards a 2-0 victory over Ajax in Wednesdays Europa League final.A night that began with a moment of silence, then applause, in memory of the 22 people who died at Manchester Arena on Monday ended with United completing their trophy collection through goals from Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. We played for the people who died, Pogba told BT Sport. These things are terrible all over the world, in London and in Paris. We went out focused to win and we won for Manchester and the country.Reminders of the attack were everywhere at Stockholms Friends Arena, from Uniteds black armbands to the chants of Manchester from their fans, while Pogba, too, was grieving, following the recent death of his father.United manager Jose Mourinho told reporters: If we could, we would obviously change the peoples lives for this cup, immediately. We wouldnt think twice. Does this cup make the city of Manchester a little bit happier? Maybe. But we just came to do our job.Victory enabled Mourinho, who said prior to the game that he and his players were struggling not to think about the tragedy, to bring his maiden Old Trafford season to a successful conclusion. He had already guided United to glory in the League Cup and despite a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, success in the Europa League means his side will return to the Champions League next season.United became only the fifth club -- after Juventus, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Chelsea -- to have won the Champions League, the Europa League and the now defunct European Cup Winners Cup.Mourinho, a UEFA Cup winner with Porto in 2003 and two-time European champion, has now won all four of the major European finals he has contested.Ajax were appearing in their first continental showpiece match since the 1996 Champions League decider and fielded a team with an average age of 22 years and 282 days -- the youngest to have ever started a major European final.Peter Boszs effervescent team caused United some uncomfortable moments, but without ever threatening to pull off an upset.Obviously both sides were affected (by the attack in Manchester), but once you play the final, for that moment you forget it, said Bosz.Im disappointed because you play finals to win them. We didnt. I havent see the Ajax that Im used to, which means good football, high pressing and being dominant.High pressing was difficult because Man United only played long balls and didnt take any risks in the build-up. I think it was a boring game.Denied a glorious homecoming by a serious knee injury, Uniteds Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was present instead as a spectator to see his current side take on the team where he made his name.Pogba put a volley fractionally wide in the first minute and in the 18th minute he found the target, albeit with a helping hand. From Marouane Fellainis lay-off, the French midfielder let fly with a left-foot shot that flicked off Davinson Sanchezs left foot and looped past Ajaxs helplessly wrong-footed goalkeeper Andre Onana. It was the biggest return yet on Uniteds world-record 89.3 million pound ($115.8 million, 103.2 million euros) investment in Pogba, who celebrated by pointing to the sky.Moments later, Antonio Valencia stung Onanas palms after a raid down the United right. The English side then took their foot off the pedal, enabling Ajax to start finding space in dangerous areas, but within three minutes of kick-off in the second half they had tightened their grip on the game.Juan Matas corner from the right was headed down by Chris Smalling and with his back to goal, Mkhitaryan held off Joel Veltman to flick the bouncing ball past Onana and claim his sixth goal in the competition.Onana was called upon to field a header from Fellaini and United goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved from substitute Donny van de Beek. But there was little to worry Uniteds fans, who continued to defiantly chant the name of their grief-stricken city as the final whistle neared.

Tennis: Nadal targets 10th title in French Open generation game

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - With the worlds top five filled for the first time by players over 30, Rafael Nadal is poised to tighten the old guards Grand Slam grip by capturing an unprecedented 10th French Open. The Spaniard, written off as a contender in Paris after a quarter-final loss to Novak Djokovic in 2015 and an injury-enforced pull-out before the third round last year, arrives at Roland Garros as the new favourite to add the 2017 title to victories in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.The 30-year-old has already reached the magical 10 titles number this year at the claycourt events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. For good measure, he also won Madrid for a fifth time, ending a seven-match losing streak, stretching back over two years, against Djokovic in the process.Nadal boasts a sensational career record at Roland Garros -- 72 wins and just two defeats, to Djokovic in 2015 and an injury-affected shock loss to Robin Soderling in 2009.That defeat to the Swede opened the door for Roger Federer to win his only French Open title. However, Federer, at 35, the oldest man in the top five, is skipping the French Open to save himself for an assault on an eighth Wimbledon.Djokovic, the defending champion in Paris, and world number one Andy Murray are struggling for form and confidence, leaving Nadal as the man to beat when the tournament starts on Sunday.Even losing in the Rome quarter-finals to young pretender Dominic Thiem has not diminished the Spaniards confidence. To win four tournaments before Roland Garros, nobody has ever done this, said Nadal, who will turn 31 on June 3.But I have matched my best performances before arriving in Paris.Nadal has also thrived on hard courts in 2017, reaching his first Slam final in three years when he lost in five sets to Federer in Australia despite being a break to the good in the deciding set.He was also a beaten finalist against Federer in Miami while his title triumph in Madrid gave him a record-equalling 30th Masters title to add to his 14 majors.Nadals record on clay against the worlds top two is also heavily-weighted in his favour -- 8-2 against Murray (2-0 at Roland Garros) and 10-5 when facing Djokovic (5-1 in Paris). This years Roland Garros will be the last for Nadals coach, his uncle Toni.In contrast, Djokovic will work with US legend Andre Agassi for the first time, having dropped his long serving back-up team in a desperate attempt to get his career back on track.Djokovic completed the career Grand Slam at last years French Open when he also held all four majors. On clay this year, he has at least been on an upward curve -- quarter-finals in Monte Carlo, semi-finals in Madrid and a runners-up spot in Rome where he was comprehensively demolished by Alexander Zverev.Djokovics relationship with the 47-year-old Agassi, an eight-time major winner, is limited, for the moment, to just the French Open.Andre is someone that I have tremendous respect for as a person and as a player. He has been through everything that Im going through, said the Serb.Murray, defeated by Djokovic in the 2016 final, has endured a wretched season by his standards with an elbow injury not helping his cause. He lost third round in Monte Carlo, made the semis in Barcelona, was a third-round loser in Madrid before an opening defeat in Rome to Fabio Fognini. There is no reason for it from my end. Im just not playing good tennis, said Murray, who had his best year on clay in 2016 but who has now failed to reach a final in his last five events.World number three Stan Wawrinka, the shock champion in 2015, is also struggling with just two wins on clay all spring.Should the likes of Nadal, Djokovic and Murray falter, then the much-hyped NextGen, featuring the likes of Zverev and Thiem could profit. On Sunday, Zverev, 20, became the first player born in the 1990s to win a Masters title.Thiem, the 23-year-old world number seven, stunned Nadal in Rome after losing to the Spaniard in the Madrid and Barcelona finals. However, he was crushed by Djokovic in the Rome semi-finals, winning just one game.At last years French Open, he made the semi-finals, winning just seven games off the Serb.

Manchester terror attack probe widens as US leaks grate

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Britain raced Thursday to track down a jihadist network suspected of orchestrating the Manchester concert attack, as a row escalated between London and Washington over leaked material from the probe. As more children were named among the 22 victims of Mondays massacre, the suicide bombers father and brother were arrested in Libya and British police arrested a seventh person in connection with the investigation. But they were left furious by repeated leaks of material shared with their US counterparts, which provides an awkward backdrop for Prime Minister Theresa Mays meeting with US President Donald Trump at the NATO summit in Brussels later Thursday. In Manchester, northwest England, feelings were still raw following Abedis attack on a concert by US pop star Ariana Grande -- especially so as the bomber was born in the city. But Manchester United fans stood together in defiant mood as their teams triumph in European footballs Europa League final brought some much-needed smiles to a city still in pain. The club dedicated their trophy to those killed, while manager Jose Mourinho said they would gladly exchange it if it could bring their lives back.According to photographs from the scene of Mondays attack at the 21,000-capacity Manchester Arena, Abedis device appeared to be fairly sophisticated.Images obtained by The New York Times newspaper showed a detonator that bomber Salman Abedi was said to have carried in his left hand, shrapnel including nuts and screws, and the shredded remains of a blue backpack. But after of the bombers identity and details of the probe were leaked, the intelligence-sharing relationship between close allies London and Washington was left rocking. We are furious. This is completely unacceptable, a government ministry source said of the images leaked from inside the US system. The National Counter Terrorism Policing body said the breach of trust caused great damage and undermines our investigations.University dropout Abedi, 22, grew up in a Libyan family that reportedly fled to Manchester to escape the now-fallen regime of Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi. His father Ramadan and younger brother Hashem were detained in Libya, authorities there said.A spokesman for the Deterrence Force, which acts as Libyas Government of National Accords police, said the brother was aware of Abedis plan and the siblings were both members of the Islamic State jihadist group. The attack was the latest in a series of deadly incidents across Europe claimed by IS that have coincided with an offensive on the groups redoubts in Syria and Iraq carried out by US, British and other Western forces.Hashem had been under surveillance for a month and a half and investigation teams supplied intelligence that he was planning a terrorist attack in the capital Tripoli, the Deterrence Force said on its Facebook page.A relative told AFP that Abedi had travelled to Manchester from Libya four days before the bombing.British officials said Abedi had been on the radar of the intelligence community before the massacre. Its very clear that this is a network that we are investigating, Manchester police chief Ian Hopkins told reporters.Six men and one woman have been arrested and were being held in custody, with the probe widening beyond Manchester to Nuneaton in central England.Elders at the south Manchester mosque believed to have been frequented by Abedi insisted that his actions were wholly alien to their preaching, and pointed the finger at online radicalisation. This act of cowardice has no place in our religion, said Fawzi Haffar, a trustee at the Didsbury mosque.French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said Abedi had likely been to Syria after the trip to Libya, citing information provided by British intelligence services to their counterparts in Paris. In any case, the links with Daesh are proven, he said, using a term for IS.Britains terror threat assessment has been hiked to critical, the highest level, meaning an attack is considered imminent.Armed troops were sent to guard key sites, a rare sight in mainland Britain. The attack was the deadliest in Britain since 2005 when four Islamist suicide bombers attacked Londons transport system, killing 52 people.May was to hold a meeting of Britains emergency committee on Thursday before heading to Brussels.A national minutes silence was to be observed at 11:00am (1000 GMT) for those killed and the dozens seriously wounded. After the NATO summit, May is heading to the G7 gathering in Italy on Friday. However, she will curtail her trip, returning home late Friday, missing the Saturday talks in Sicily.NATO leaders are expected to formally sign up to the US-led coalition against IS, according to one diplomatic source. The bombing came just over two weeks before a snap general election set for June 8. Campaigning will resume on Friday.A total of 64 people are being treated in hospital, including 20 in critical care, medical officials said. Twelve of the injured are aged under 16. One of those killed was an eight-year-old girl.

US funding cuts would make it 'impossible' for UN to do its work

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - President Donald Trumps plan for deep cuts to US funding to the United Nations would make it impossible for the world body to continue its work to advance peace, development and human rights, the UN spokesman said Wednesday. The US State Department has laid out plans to slash Washingtons budget for diplomacy and foreign aid by more than 30 percent, including a dramatic cut of 60 percent of US funding for peacekeeping missions. The budget as its proposed now would make it simply impossible for the UN to continue all of its essential work advancing peace, development, human rights and humanitarian assistance around the world, said spokesman Stephane Dujarric. The United States is the biggest contributor to the United Nations, paying 22 per cent of the $5.4 billion core budget and 28.5 per cent of the $7.9 billion peacekeeping budget. Last month, the US administration cut funding to the UN Population Fund, which provides reproductive health and birth control services in more than 150 countries.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had criticized the US move, saying that the funding cut of $32.5 million could be devastating for the health of women and girls worldwide.Guterres, who took over from Ban Ki-moon five months ago, has vowed to trim the UN bureaucracy and make the world body more effective in its responses to world crises. The UN chief is very conscious of cost-cutting and has instructed all departments to look for ways to spend money more wisely, said Dujarric. But he added: We will need resources to deliver on our mandates.UN officials cautioned that the budget proposal could undergo changes in the US Congress.I think we would want to see the conclusion of the budgetary process before we make any comment, said Atul Khare, an under-secretary-general for peacekeeping.Last month, Trump urged UN Security Council ambassadors during a working lunch in Washington to take a close look at the UN budget, saying expenditures had absolutely gone out of control. But Trump added that if the United Nations showed results, he would back away from budget cuts because youre talking peanuts compared to the important work youre doing. The US presidents budget proposal was released this week as the UNs budget committee began work in New York to approve expenditures for the 16 peacekeeping missions. The council has agreed to shut down peacekeeping missions in Ivory Coast, Liberia and Haiti, and is expected to significantly draw down the joint operation with the African Union in Sudans Darfur region.

Ten die in police operation at Brazil farm

Posted:

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Nine men and a woman were killed Wednesday during a police operation in northeastern Brazil that activists say was linked to a long-running conflict over land rights in the country.Police said they were serving warrants linked to unrelated criminal investigations when they came under gunfire at the Santa Lucia farming estate, some 860 kilometers (530 miles) from Belem, capital of Para state. However, the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) -- which is connected to the Roman Catholic church and acts on behalf of the rural poor -- said police were carrying out property re-integration ordered by a municipal judge in the city of Redencion. No officers were injured in the shooting, according to authorities, who said said autopsies were underway on those killed. The violence recalled the massacre of nine people during a land dispute in a remote part of western Brazil that shook the country last month. The victims in that violence, including an Evangelical pastor, reportedly were knifed and shot to death. The CPT said at the time that the killings were part of a pattern of brutal pressure from rich landowners to displace small-scale farmers from lucrative territories.Sixty-one people were killed in land conflicts in Brazil last year, the highest number since 2003, according to the CPTs latest annual report.

Morgan ton sets up England win over South Africa

Posted:

LEEDS (AFP) - England captain Eoin Morgans fine century laid the platform for a 72-run win over South Africa in the day/night first one-day international at Headingley on Thursday.Victory over the Proteas, the worlds number-one ranked ODI side, gave England a morale boost just a week before they host the Champions Trophy tournament featuring the worlds top eight 50-over sides and put them 1-0 up in this three-match series.South Africa, set 340 to win, made steady progress while the experienced Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis shared a second-wicket stand of 112.But they both fell in quick succession to leave the Proteas 149 for three.South Africas innings never recovered and they were dismissed for 267 with five overs to spare.Earlier, Morgans 107 -- his 10th ODI hundred for England -- was the cornerstone of the hosts 339 for six.England had slumped to 198 for five but Morgans sixth-wicket stand of 117 with fellow left-hander Moeen Ali, who made a dashing 77 not out on his return, turned the tide. Both batsmen struck five sixes apiece.Ali, omitted from the preceding 2-0 series win over Morgans native Ireland, ended the innings in style when he hoisted the last ball, from Chris Morris, high over deep square leg.Ali was named man-of-the-match after also taking two wickets with his off-spin.South Africa skipper AB De Villiers opted to field first after winning the toss despite sunny blue skies above Headingley seemingly offering good batting conditions. His decision was quickly rewarded when Jason Roy (one) was caught behind off left-armer Wayne Parnell in just the second over. Both Alex Hales and England Test skipper Joe Root made runs on an easy-paced pitch before they each fell to Andile Phehlukwayo. The 21-year-old seamer struck with his first ball Wednesday when Hales, on 61, flat-footedly chased a wide ball and got a thin edge to wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock.Phehlukwayo then undid Root (37) with a bouncer the local hero mishooked to Amla. But Morgan twice lofted Phehlukwayo for six.Ben Stokes, back from impressing in the Indian Premier League, holed out for 30 and fellow IPL star Jos Buttler, replacing in-form Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow, glanced to short fine leg on seven.Morgan, however, went to his hundred when he hooked fast bowler Kagiso Rabada over long leg for six.He holed out off Morris soon afterwards to end a 93-ball innings but Ali kept going as England plundered 102 runs in the last 10 overs.England then had an early breakthrough when dangerman de Kock fell for just five after skying Chris Woakes to opposing keeper Buttler. But Amla again proved a thorn in Englands side with a typically elegant near run-a-ball 73.Fast bowler Mark Wood, however, removed the stylish South African when he had Amla lbw but only after England successfully reviewed Australian umpire Rod Tuckers not out call. There was rather less doubt when du Plessis was caught behind off Yorkshire fast bowler Liam Plunkett.De Villiers looked good while making 45 off 38 balls, including seven fours, but with his side falling behind the run-rate, he fell in similar fashion to several team-mate when he holed out off Ali.His exit left South Africa 225 for seven and the contest ended when tailender Rabada was caught behind off Woakes, who took four for 38.Before the match started, players and officials were joined by spectators in observing a minutes silence in memory of the victims of Mondays terror attack in nearby Manchester that killed 22 people and injured dozens more. The series continues at Southampton on Saturday and concludes with next Mondays match at Lords.
