At least 11 Russian activists detained on Moscow's Red Square: monitor

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - At least 11 activists were detained on Moscows Red Square on Friday as they were reading Russias constitution out loud, a group that monitors protest activity said. OVD-Info, a website that tracks the detention of activists, said among the activists detained was Ildar Dadin, the first and only person in Russia to have served prison time for contravening a tough law clamping down on protests in the country. The activists were taken to a nearby police station, OVD-Info said. It remains unclear whether they could face charges. A policeman approched us and warned us that if we dont leave, they will detain us, Dadin told TASS news agency. Ten minutes later police detained us.Lawyer Alexei Lipster told RIA Novosti news agency that Dadin was still in police custody but that officers had not written up a report. Dadin, 35, was jailed in December 2015 for the supposed crime of holding repeated peaceful demonstrations against President Vladimir Putins rule without official permission. In a letter to his wife smuggled out from prison in November, Dadin alleged he had been tortured behind bars, as well as threatened with rape and murder. His allegations exploded into the public eye, shining a spotlight on abuse that forced the Kremlin to pay attention.Putin in January ordered a review of the penitentiary services work, although it was not explicitly linked to Dadins case.In 2014 Russia controversially introduced criminal charges for those who breach rules at protest rallies twice or more in a period of 180 days.

West Indies crawl to 218-5 at stumps against Pakistan

Posted:

ROSEAU (AFP) - West Indies replicated their opponents dour batting effort in crawling to 218 for five off 100 overs in reply to Pakistans first innings total of 376 at stumps on day three of the third and final Test at Windsor Park in Dominica on Friday.Leg-spinner Yasir Shah lifted his series-leading wicket tally to 20 with three victims in the morning session but the home side then showed resolve with all-rounder Roston Chase leading the defiance in a topscore of 60 before being forced to retire hurt in the final session.Struck painfully on the right elbow attempting a pull at Mohammad Amir operating with the second new ball, the lanky right-handers departure after 190 minutes at the crease gave Pakistan a measure of optimism which was heightened when Vishaul Singh fell leg-before to Mohammad Abbas to make the score 189 for five. However captain Jason Holder, despite sustaining a painful blow as well on his left shoulder, held firm with Shane Dowrich and the pair will resume on the fourth morning heartened by the prospect of Chase returning at the fall of the next wicket to continue his innings. For all of Shahs perseverance and the efforts of the fast-medium bowlers it was Azhar Alis part-time leg-spin which broke a stubborn 55-run fourth-wicket partnership between Chase and Shai Hope in mid-afternoon.Having batted grittily for almost three hours, Hope mistimed a drive off the very last ball of the post-lunch session to be caught for 29. He was a model of correctness and discipline until his critical error of judgement. In contrast, Chase played more positively. Nevertheless both found run-scoring difficult and had moments of good fortune.Troubled again by Shah operating round the wicket, Chase was given out on 23, caught at slip by Younis Khan as he swung at the leg-spinner. However the decision of standing umpire Richard Illingworth was overturned on review of the television replays. There was more frustration for the bowler in his very next over as Asad Shafiq failed to hold on to a fierce square-cut from Hope.Earlier, Shah raised Pakistans hopes of dismissing the West Indies cheaply despite the placid pitch. He broke a 43-run opening partnership when Kieran Powells miscued heave was well caught by Azhar Ali running in off the boundary. With Kraigg Brathwaite plodding along in his usual stoic manner at the other end, Shimron Hetmyer sought to seize the initiative only for Shah to bring his enterprise to an end when an original not out verdict by presiding umpire Bruce Oxenford for an appeal for a leg-side catch by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed was overturned on television review. There was no doubt though to Ahmeds second dismissal of the morning as Brathwaite, who had grafted his way to 29 off 123 deliveries through three-and-a-half hours, pushed forward to Shah in the last over before the interval and edged a catch high to the wicketkeepers right.

Rain thwarts Tamim's hundred bid against Ireland

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - The first match of the tri-series in Dublin between Ireland and Bangladesh was abandoned after just 31.1 overs because of rain, cutting short a fine innings by Tamim Iqbal. The Tigers were 157 for four against hosts Ireland when the players were forced off the field, with Tamim 64 not out from 88 balls. The opening batsman was unable to play the full range of his attacking strokes because his side found themselves in trouble at 70 for four. But in partnership with Mahmudullah he led an impressive recovery, with the latter 43 not out when the rain came.Peter Chase, who had been Irelands most consistent bowler in last weekends one-day internationals in England, was again their best bowler, striking twice in four balls to dismiss Soumya Sarker, caught behind from the fifth ball of his first over, and then Sabbir Rahman, to only his third ball, after a rash pull shot was well caught at long leg by the diving Tim Murtagh.Mushfiqur Rahim hit three boundaries in his 13 from just 17 balls before he got a thick edge and was well held at slip by Gary Wilson off the bowling of Durham seamer Barry McCarthy.Shakib Al Hasan, captain for the day while Mashrafe Mortaza serves a one-match ban, also scored quickly but he was Chases third victim when the bowler returned for a second spell, to a second catch by wicket-keeper Niall OBrien. But Tamim and Mahmudullah finally hauled the worlds seventh ranked team back into the match and both were looking dangerous after adding 87 from 99 balls. The rain, which had delayed the start by 25 minutes, returned at 1.30pm and just over three hours later with the rain still falling the captains shook hands with both teams taking two points. There was a blow for Ireland on the morning of the match, when leading batsman Ed Joyce was ruled out with a stiff back. Stuart Thompson was brought in as the extra seamer on a green Irish wicket.Joyce hopes to be fit for Irelands next game against New Zealand on Sunday while Bangladesh will return to action next Wednesday for their game against the Kiwis, when Mortaza will be available.

West Indies 152-4 at tea in third test against Pakistan

ROSEAU (AFP) - Azhar Alis part-time leg-spin broke a stubborn fourth-wicket partnership as the West Indies reached 152 for four in reply to Pakistans first innings 376 at tea on the third day of the third and final Test on Friday.Having batted grittily for almost three hours at Windsor Park in Dominica, Shai Hope mistimed a drive off the very last ball of the afternoon session to be caught for 29, ending a 55-run partnership with Roston Chase.Chase will resume in the final session on 41 with Vishaul Singh expected to partner him in the middle. On a pitch offering little encouragement for the faster bowlers, leg-spinner Yasir Shah posed the greatest threat to the batsmen after he had taken all three wickets to fall in the morning session, lifting his tally in the series to 20.Hope, who impressed with a patient, determined innings of 90 on the penultimate day of the second Test in Barbados, was again a model of correctness and discipline until his critical error of judgement.Chase, who scored a fluent century in the first innings of that match at Kensington Oval, was more positive in contrast.Nevertheless both found run-scoring difficult and had moments of good fortune.Troubled again by Shah operating round the wicket, Chase was given out caught at slip by Younis Khan as he swung at the leg-spinner.However the decision of standing umpire Richard Illingworth was overturned on review of the television replays. There was more frustration for the bowler in his very next over as Asad Shafiq failed to hold on to a fierce square-cut from Hope.Earlier, Shah raised Pakistans hopes of dismissing the West Indies cheaply despite the placid pitch.Entrusted with the ball at the start of the day by captain Misbah-ul-Haq, the premier spinner did not disappoint, breaking a 43-run opening partnership between Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell.Attempting to heave a delivery over the midwicket fence, Powells miscued shot was well caught by Azhar Ali running in off the boundary to send the left-hander back to the pavilion for 31.With Brathwaite plodding along in his usual stoic manner at the other end, new batsman Shimron Hetmyer sought to seize the initiative from the bowlers. His intentions were clear when he hoisted Shah for the only six of the innings so far.But the bowler exacted swift revenge as an original not out verdict by presiding umpire Bruce Oxenford for an appeal for a leg-side catch by wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed was overturned on review when television replays revealed a faint touch of the ball onto the batsmans glove. There was no doubt though to Ahmeds second dismissal of the morning as Brathwaite, who had grafted his way to 29 off 123 deliveries through three-and-a-half hours, pushed forward to Shah in the last over before the interval and edged a catch high to the wicketkeepers right.

Global cyber attacks hit British hospitals, Spanish firms

LONDON (AFP) - Britains National Health Service declared a major incident after cyber attacks hit dozens of hospitals on Friday, as security experts pointed to a global campaign that also disrupted Spanish businesses. Some of the affected hospitals had to divert ambulances, scrap operations and shut down their computer systems or ask patients to avoid contacting their family doctors unless absolutely necessary. At least 16 organisations within the state-run National Health Service, some of them responsible for several hospitals each, have reported being struck.A number of NHS organisations have reported to NHS Digital that they have been affected by a ransomware attack, NHS Digital said in a statement.NHS Incident Director Anne Rainsberry said: We ask people to use the NHS wisely while we deal with this major incident which is still ongoing.Pictures posted on social media showed screens of NHS computers with images demanding payment of $300 (275 euros) worth of the online currency Bitcoin, saying: Ooops, your files have been encryptedIt adds: Maybe you are looking for a way to recover your files, but do not waste your time.It demands payment in three days or the price is doubled, and if none is received in seven days the files will be deleted, the screen message claims. In Spain, employees at telecom giant Telefonica were told to shut down their workstations immediately through megaphone announcements as the attack spread.Forcepoint Security Labs said that a major malicious email campaign consisting of nearly five million emails per hour was spreading the new ransomware. The group said in a statement that the attack had global scope, affecting organisations in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Mexico.Top spooks on the caseBritains National Cyber Security Centre and its National Crime Agency said they were looking into the UK incidents, apparently caused by a piece of malware called Wanna Decryptor. At this stage we do not have any evidence that patient data has been accessed, the NHS Digital statement said. This attack was not specifically targeted at the NHS and is affecting organisations from across a range of sectors, it added.Several individual health service trusts in England reported severe problems.A spokesman for Barts Health NHS Trust in London said it was experiencing major IT disruption and delays at all four of its hospitals. We have activated our major incident plan to make sure we can maintain the safety and welfare of patients, the spokesman said.Ambulances are being diverted to neighbouring hospitals. Two employees at St Bartholomews Hospital, which is part of Barts Health, told AFP that all the computers in the hospital had been turned off.We have been told that we need to shut down all the computers and even our Wi-Fi on our phones. No computers are currently working, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to press.Caroline Brennan, 41, went to the hospital to see her brother, who had open heart surgery. They told us there was a problem. They said the system was down and that they cannot transfer anyone till the computer system was back up so he is still in the theatre. They told us to come back in 30 to 40 minutes. They said they started the system again.Systems shutdownDerbyshire Community Health Services in central England said on Twitter: All IT systems have been temporarily shut down.Blackpool Hospitals NHS Trust in northwest England, which includes six hospitals, said: Please dont attend A&E (accident and emergency) unless its an emergency. The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust in eastern England scrapped all outpatient, endoscopy, cardiology and radiology appointments scheduled for this weekend as it did not know how long the attack would last.Kubo Macak, a cyber warfare expert at Exeter University, said that if the investigation shows that the cyber attack was directed by an outside state, it would amount to a violation of the UKs sovereignty.

McLaren accept Alonso ultimatum

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - McLaren-Honda boss Zak Brown said he accepted Fernando Alonsos challenge to give him a race winning car for next year, and had no concerns at him leaving the circuit to play tennis after another engine failure. The newly-installed American told reporters at the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday that he had watched the previous days news conference during which two-time champion Alonso, who is taking leave from the team to miss the Monaco Grand Prix later this month and instead race in the Indianapolis 500, issued his personal ultimatum.Totally understand his position... Hes a two-time world champion that wants to be a three-time world champion and hes only going to do that in a car that would win.As he said, he would love to stay at McLaren. Weve given him a great environment, he really enjoys it here -- weve got to give him a winning car.Sitting here today in Barcelona, its hard to know when that will be -- other than weve designed lots of winning cars.Weve seen other engine manufacturers make significant progress over the season, as you saw with Renault a couple of years ago, where they started and where they ended up.As he said, hes going to wait until after the summer break, which is what weve agreed.Alonso said he would be open to offers for next year if by late summer he had not been convinced that McLaren-Honda could provide a winning car.On Friday morning, in front of his home fans, he suffered another engine failure when he spun on his own oil leak before completing a lap in opening practice. After returning to the pits, he left the circuit to go back to his hotel and play tennis.Brown laughed off the incident.Well, his session was over, he said.I think youre not going to learn a lot by watching other cars go around so obviously he wanted to get rid of some energy, built-up energy, so I dont have any issue with that.

White House opens movie theatre to public

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Visitors to the White House can now visit the cloakroom-turned-movie theater where Dwight Eisenhower used to sneak off to watch westerns and where Jimmy Carter screened All The Presidents Men.The decision to open up the private presidential theater -- set up in a large cloakroom by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1942 -- was made by Melania Trump, the presidents wife. The White House belongs to the people of this country, the first lady said.I believe everyone who takes the time to visit and tour the White House should have as much access to its rich history and wonderful traditions as possible. It is my hope that our visitors truly enjoy the newest piece of the tour.Among the biggest movie buffs to have occupied the Oval Office were Eisenhower, a fan of westerns and Gary Cooper flicks in particular and Richard Nixon, who liked black-and-white musicals such as Yankee Doodle Dandy. An even bigger cinephile was Carter, who held two or three movie nights a week.Carter watched 480 movies while in the White House, more than any other president. His first White House movie showing was All The Presidents Men, the story of the Watergate scandal that toppled Nixon.Despite being a former actor, Ronald Reagan was not such a big viewer, although he did like to watch his own movies with his wife Nancy on his birthday, according to the White House Museum website. He did however remodel the screening room to have 51 tiered seats.George W. Bushs tastes ran more to the Austin Powers spy spoof series, although -- as the wars he launched in Afghanistan and Iraq ground on for years -- he was said to have turned more to gritty combat movies like Black Hawk Down and the Vietnam film We Were Soldiers.Barack Obama screened To Kill a Mocking Bird to mark the 50th anniversary of the film about racial prejudice in the US South. The first movie put on by Donald Trump when he came to office in January was Finding Dory, the animated tale of a fish looking for its parents. It was screened the same weekend that protests broke out across the US over Trumps travel ban on visitors entering the US from seven predominantly Muslim states. The theater is located in the East Wing of the White House, which also feature Roosevelts WWII bomb shelter. The first movie ever screened in the White House was Birth of a Nation, a 1915 movie about the Civil War that sparked controversy for glorifying the Ku Klux Klan.

Egypt, IMF in initial agreement on next aid tranche

CAIRO (AFP) - The International Monetary Fund said Friday it will release the second tranche of a $12-billion loan to Egypt, in a vote of confidence in the countrys economic reform programme. The amount of $1.25 billion must still be endorsed by the IMF board following an expert-level agreement announced after a visit to Cairo, an IMF statement said.According to Egypts finance minister, Amro al-Garhi, the tranche should be disbursed in the second half of June. This agreement is a vote of confidence by the IMF staff in the continued implementation of the Egyptian authorities programme on economic reform, the IMF statement said.Since the 2011 revolt against Hosni Mubarak, the Arab worlds most populous country has seen a sharp decline in tourism revenue and reduced foreign investment, caused by political instability and security issues. In November last year, the IMF approved the $12-billion three-year aid package for Egypt, at the time releasing an initial $2.75 billion. To obtain the IMF lifeline, Cairo undertook to implement drastic reforms, adopting value added tax, cutting public energy subsidies and in November floated the exchange rate of the Egyptian pound. Before November, the official rate was 8.83 Egyptian pounds to the US dollar, but it has since weakened and on Friday was averaging 18 pounds per dollar, according to the Central Banks website.Fridays IMF announcement comes after a visit to Cairo by a delegation charged with reviewing Egypts economic reform programme, its statement said. This agreement is a vote of confidence by the IMF staff in the continued implementation of the Egyptian authorities programme, the statement said.Foreign exchange shortages are resolved and interbank market activity is recovering.
