Latham ton propels New Zealand to Ireland rout

Posted:

DUBLIN (AFP) - New Zealand captain Tom Latham led from the front with a century as his side beat Ireland by an emphatic margin of 190 runs at Malahide on Sunday to win the one-day international tri-series with a game to spare. The Black Caps face Bangladesh in Wednesdays final match at Clontarf, when Latham will receive the trophy.Defending an imposing 344 for six, New Zealand needed only 39.3 overs to bowl out their hosts for 154, with Matt Henry, just returned from the Indian Premier League, taking three for 36.Ireland captain William Porterfield top scored for his side with 48 from 50 balls (five fours and a six) but when he was fourth out at the start of the 19th over for 75, the innings went downhill fast.Niall OBrien followed in the next over and wickets fell steadily with all six Black Caps bowlers striking.Only a last-wicket stand of 25 between Barry McCarthy and Peter Chase, the No 11 who hit a career-best 14, delayed the inevitable. The strength of this New Zealand team is their batting, however, and while Latham led from the front with his third ODI century, from 109 balls with eight fours and four sixes, it was the even faster scoring around him from Luke Ronchi (35 from 31) and Neil Broom (38 off 42) that was so impressive. When Latham was third out -- dismissed for 104 -- at the end of the 36th over, with the total on 212, the Ireland bowlers enjoyed their best spell, but the entry of Colin Munro changed all that. He thumped 44 off 15 balls with three fours and four sixes in a prolific 57-run stand with Mitchell Santner. In all 72 came off the last four overs. It was a new look Black Caps side as they also welcomed back all-rounder Corey Anderson from the IPL -- although he was restricted to 20 off 24 balls with just one six -- while Adam Milne also made his first appearance of the series.Ireland dropped the experienced Kevin OBrien and Tim Murtagh but it yielded no improvement as they slumped to a 10th successive loss against a full member nation.Latham was fortunate to reach his century as, 11 runs short he was caught at third man but, after the television umpire was consulted, bowler Craig Young was ruled to have over-stepped and a no-ball was called.

Zverev stuns Djokovic to win Rome Masters

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Germanys Alexander Zverev stunned four-time Rome champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 to win his first Masters title on Sunday, confirming his status as a French Open dangerman. The 20-year-old Zverev claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title after becoming the youngest player in a decade to reach a final at this level and will move to 10 in the world as a result of his impressive victory.Despite a clinical straight sets win over Austrian Dominic Thiem on Saturday, world number two Djokovic produced a flawed performance on centre court that saw him curse and swear as he struggled to find a way back into the match.Overall, Djokovic had 27 unforced errors to 14 for Zverev, who also had 16 winners to the Serbs 11.Zverev now has four career titles, three of which have come this year, while Djokovic, who turns 30 on Monday, was denied what would have been a record 31st Masters title.Playing against Novak, one of the best players to ever play -- it was an honour being on the court with you, said Zverev, the first player born in the 1990s to win a Masters title.Youre an amazing player. Unfortunately this week you didnt win, but Im sure as we get closer to Paris youll be one of the favourites for the title.Zverev broke in the first game of the final on his way to the first set and carved out the crucial first break of the second set in the third game.I knew I had to be aggressive from the first point on and to the last, added Zverev, who has known Djokovic for many years having trained with the Serbian. It was very important for me to be able to stay this aggressive and dont let him take over the game.Against someone like Novak, its always very tough to get into rallies. I thought maybe if hes a bit cold, hell give me one or two unforced errors in the beginning which can help me to break him.So all tournament I served quite well, so I was quite comfortable on my serve. It was more a question if I could break him. I wanted to get a shot from the beginning, so it worked out well.Djokovic turns to AgassiDespite playing twice on Saturday, when he was forced to complete his rain-interrupted quarter-final against Juan Martin del Potro before facing Thiem, Djokovic struggled to find rhythm against Zverev. He complained of conditions that were completely different, with a lot of wind and just very fast and bouncing (balls). He was quick to applaud his conqueror, calling Zverevs win absolutely deserved. But he added: On the other hand, I mean, he didnt get much from my side. I played very poor today. Just couldnt find any rhythm.Djokovics frustrations boiled over when he was handed a warning for an audible obscenity in the eighth game of the second set before he was broken again in the ninth as Zverev celebrated his first Masters title.Despite the defeat, Djokovic will start the French Open, which gets underway next Sunday, as one of the leading favourites having completed the career Grand Slam in Paris in 2016.He then confirmed eight-time Grand Slam title winner Andre Agassi would coach him in Paris. In the WTA event, Ukraines Elina Svitolina continued her brilliant season with a clinical 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 upset win over injury-hit Simona Halep.Halep, who won the Madrid Open last week, needed treatment after going over on her right ankle in the second set as she hit a return from the baseline. In the decider, the Romanian, who had won 26 of her past 30 matches on clay, was visibly hurting and was helpless to prevent Svitolina from claiming her fourth title of the season after wins in Taipei, Dubai and Istanbul.Svitolina now has a tour-leading 31 match wins this year.I think I can be proud of myself for handling the pressure, because I played some tough matches here. Today I needed to show that I am there and I want to win and Im ready to do it, said Svitolina.Halep added: I never like to give up during the match. I dont want to stop the matches. So I just wanted to try to win the second set.

'Arab Nato' summit witnesses Iran isolation calls

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - US President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Muslim countries to deny sanctuary to extremists and called for international isolation of Iran, which he accused of fuelling sectarian conflict and terror. From Lebanon to Iraq to Yemen, Iran funds, arms and trains terrorists, militias and other extremist groups that spread destruction and chaos across the region, Trump said in a major speech in Saudi Arabia.Until the Iranian regime is willing to be a partner for peace, all nations of conscience must work together to isolate it... and pray for the day when the Iranian people have the just and righteous government they so richly deserve.Trump, visiting the kingdom at the start of his first foreign tour since taking office, told dozens of Muslim leaders invited to Riyadh for a special summit that he brought a message of friendship and hope and love.He appealed to Muslim nations to ensure that terrorists find no sanctuary on their soil and announced an agreement with Gulf countries to fight financing for extremists. He said Arab, Muslim and Middle Eastern nations have born the brunt of the killings and the worst of destruction in this wave of fanatical violence.KSA King accuses Iran of exporting terrorSaudi Arabia’s King Salman on Sunday accused regional rival Shiite Iran of exporting extremist Islamic movements to the world and vowed to eliminate the Islamic State group. The Iranian regime has been the spearhead of global terrorism since the (Ayatollah Ruhollah) Khomeini revolution in 1979, King Salman said in a speech to leaders including US President Donald Trump. We did not know terrorism and extremism until the Khomeini revolution reared its head, he said.Saudi Arabia was also determined to eliminate the Islamic State group, the king said of the Sunni Muslim jihadist organisation.

Erdogan elected as Turkey ruling party's chairman

Posted:

ANKARA (AFP) - Turkeys ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Sunday elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as its new chairman, returning him to the post he held for over a decade up until August 2014, party officials said.Erdogan, who was the only candidate for the job at a special AKP congress, takes over from Prime Minister Binali Yildirim as the party boss following constitutional changes agreed in an April referendum on expanding his powers.Hayati Yazici, AKP deputy chairman, announced that Erdogan had received 1,414 votes from delegates and confirmed he would return as party leader, to cheers from the audience in the Ankara stadium.Erdogan led the party from its establishment in August 2001 until he became the first directly-elected president in August 2014.Between 2003 and 2014, he was prime minister for three terms leading what is by far the most effective Islamic-rooted political force in modern Turkish history. But under the old constitution, the head of state had to sever ties with their political party and Erdogan in August 2014 left the AKP and stepped down as chairman after his election as president. After the April 16 referendum on creating an executive presidency, Erdogan was able to rejoin the party and become chairman once more as he seeks to take control of the party and its direction. In his speech after his election, Erdogan said the congress was a new start for Turkey and its citizens. In the next few months, from the fight against terror to the economy, from expanding rights and freedoms to investments, in every field, this new period will be a leap for Turkey.

Trump 'conveys US message of love' to Muslim states

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP/Reuters) - US President Donald Trump told dozens of Muslim leaders Sunday he brought a message of friendship and hope and love, in a keenly awaited speech on Islam in Saudi Arabia. He urged Muslim countries to ensure that terrorists find no sanctuary on their soil and announced an agreement with Gulf countries to fight financing for extremists.Trump has called on all countries to work together to isolate Iran, accusing the Islamic republic of fuelling the fires of sectarian conflict and terror.Until the Iranian regime is willing to be a partner for peace, all nations of conscience must work together to isolate it, he said.President Donald Trump called on Arab leaders to do their share to fight extremism.Trump, who generated controversy with his push to ban many Muslims from entering the United States, described the fight against terrorism as a battle between good and evil rather than a clash of civilizations. This is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life, and decent people of all religions who seek to protect it, Trump will say in the speech, according to excerpts of the speech released by the White House. That means honestly confronting the crisis of extremism and the terror groups it inspires. And it means standing together against the murder of innocent Muslims, the oppression of women, the persecution of Jews, and the slaughter of Christians.Trumps America first philosophy helped him win the 2016 election and has rattled allies who depend on U.S. support for their defense. The president, who is struggling to contain a brewing political scandal at home, made clear in his address that Washington would partner with the Middle East but expected more action in return.Terrorism has spread across the world. But the path to peace begins right here, on this ancient soil, in this sacred land, he will say in Saudi Arabia, the first stop on a nine-day tour that includes Israel, Italy and Belgium. The speech is part of an effort to redefine his relationship with the Muslim world after Trump frequently attacked Muslims on the campaign trail last year and tried to ban many from entering the United States. The approach was also designed to contrast with former President Barack Obama, whom Trump has criticized for his handling of the fight against Islamic State. We are not here to lecture, we are not here to tell other people how to live, what to do, who to be, or how to worship, Trump says. But we can only overcome this evil if the forces of good are united and strong, and if everyone in this room does their fair share and fulfills their part of the burden...the nations of the Middle East cannot wait for American power to crush this enemy for them.Trump received a warm welcome from Arab leaders, who set aside his campaign rhetoric about Muslims and focused on his desire to crack down on Irans influence in the region, a commitment they found wanting in Obama.
