2nd Test: Azhar, Misbah give Pakistan the edge

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Misbah-ul-Haq missed a Test century by one run for the second consecutive match but Azhar Ali completed three figures as Pakistan took a first innings lead of 81, totalling 393 in reply to the West Indies 312 on the third day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday.Mohammad Abbas then removed Kieran Powell to a catch at the wicket in the 14 overs the home side faced in their second innings before the close of play. They will resume on the fourth morning at 40 for one, still needing 41 more runs to erase the first innings deficit with opener Kraigg Brathwaite and Shimron Hetmyer at the wicket.Deprived of the landmark when stranded on 99 not out in the first innings of the first Test in Jamaica, the Pakistan captain appeared destined to accomplish the feat on this occasion, only to be dismissed in a bizarre manner, triggering a mini collapse in which three wickets fell for 13 runs just before tea.Having survived an optimistic appeal for LBW against his West Indian counterpart Jason Holder the ball before, Misbah attempted to pull out of the way of the next delivery which lifted sharply and came off the glove for Shai Hope to gleefully hold the catch at second slip. His typically phlegmatic, unflustered innings lasted almost five hours in which he faced 201 balls, striking two sixes and nine fours. It was also the first time he was dismissed in the series after two unbeaten innings in Kingston. His surprise demise broke a brisk 57-run partnership with Asad Shafiq after earlier adding 98 with Ali, the opening batsman reaching a painstaking 13th Test century in mid-afternoon before he was caught at the wicket off Devindra Bishoo for 105, the leg-spinners third success of the innings.Alis marathon effort occupied seven-and-a-half hours during which he faced 278 deliveries, stroking just nine boundaries in an innings characterised by considerable discipline and patience.Buoyed by Misbahs departure, West Indies enjoyed further success just before tea when wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed became fast bowler Shannon Gabriels second wicket, edging an attempted drive to Powell at first slip.Off the very last ball of the afternoon session, Shafiq was ruled leg-before to the miserly Holder, although Pakistans tail wagged to the tune of another 64 runs after tea, Yasir Shah being last out to Gabriel, who led the home sides bowling effort with four for 81 off 32 overs. Those eventful sessions after lunch were in direct opposition to the tedium of the morning, where 54 runs came off 26 overs as Ali and Misbah batted with almost exaggerated care on a pitch showing increasing signs of wear and offering disconcertingly variable bounce. This pitch is very difficult to bat on and it was important that we did the hard work to get a first innings lead, said Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur in putting his sides very deliberate batting approach into context. We need our spinners to hit their lines and lengths on the fourth day because it will be extremely tough to chase any sort of decent target in the fourth innings here.

West Indies respond after Ali ton, Misbah out for 99

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Misbah-ul-Haq missed a Test century by one run for the second consecutive match but Azhar Ali completed three figures as Pakistan reached 329 for seven at tea on the third day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday.Deprived of the landmark when left stranded on 99 not out in the first innings of the first Test in Jamaica, the Pakistan captain appeared destined to accomplish the feat on this occasion, only to be dismissed in a bizarre manner.Misbahs exit triggered a mini collapse in which three wickets fell for 13 runs just before the interval after Pakistan eclipsed the West Indies first innings total of 312.Having survived an optimistic appeal for lbw against his West Indian counterpart Jason Holder the ball before, Misbah attempted to pull out of the way of the next delivery which lifted sharply and came off the glove for Shai Hope to gleefully hold the catch at second slip. His typically phlegmatic, unflustered innings lasted almost five hours in which he faced 201 balls, striking two sixes and nine fours. It was also the first time he was dismissed in the series after two unbeaten innings in Kingston. His surprise demise broke a brisk 57-run partnership with Asad Shafiq after earlier adding 98 with Ali, the opening batsman reaching a painstaking 13th Test century shortly after lunch before he was caught at the wicket off Devindra Bishoo for 105, the leg-spinners third success of the innings.Alis marathon effort occupied seven-and-a-half hours during which he faced 278 deliveries, stroking just nine boundaries in an innings characterised by considerable discipline and patience.Buoyed by Misbahs departure, West Indies enjoyed further success just before tea when wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed became fast bowler Shannon Gabriels second wicket, edging an attempted drive to Kieran Powell at first slip. Then off the very last ball of the session, Shafiq was ruled leg-before to Holder, giving the medium-fast bowler impressive figures of two for 23 off 23 miserly overs. An entertaining afternoon session that produced 103 runs for the loss of four wickets was in direct opposition to the tedium of the morning, where 54 runs came off 26 overs as Ali and Misbah batted with almost exaggerated care on a pitch showing increasing signs of wear and offering disconcertingly variable bounce.

Alitalia shareholders approve administration move

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Shareholders in Alitalia voted unanimously Tuesday to put the company into administration, moving the troubled airline a step closer to liquidation as efforts continue to find a buyer. The move follows last weeks rejection by staff of job and salary cuts which management had proposed as a condition for injecting new funds under a two-billion-euro rescue plan for the loss-making company.Alitalia said in a statement that flights would continue to operate as planned under the administrators, who were expected to be named by the Italian government after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening.Ministers said last week Italy would provide a bridging loan to keep Alitalias planes flying for around six months.Reports say the temporary credit line could be as high as 500 million euros but the centre-left administration has ruled out nationalising the company. If no buyer can be found, the administrators will have to organise its winding-up, with the potential loss of 20,000 jobs at the company and among suppliers.Despite that, polls suggest a majority of Italians are prepared to see their erstwhile national carrier go to the wall rather than pump in more cash.Consumer groups have threatened to sue the government if any more taxpayers money is spent on propping up the airline. In a joint statement, Etihad Airways, which has a 49 percent stake, and Alitalias Italian shareholders voiced deep regret at the outcome of the ballot.James Hogan, Etihads outgoing Australian CEO, said the staff vote had been the final straw for the Gulf carrier. We have done all we could to support Alitalia, as a minority shareholder, but it is clear this business requires fundamental and far-reaching restructuring to survive and grow in future, Hogan said in a statement.- New Etihad setback -======================Without the support of all stakeholders for that restructuring, we are not prepared to continue to invest. The plan rejected by staff involved cutting 1,700 jobs from a global headcount of 12,500 and wage cuts of up to eight percent.Alitalia has been loss-making for years and has been squeezed hard recently by the emergence of leaner, low-cost rivals on domestic and European routes, particularly Ryanair, which is now the market leader in Italy. The company lost 460 million euros last year and a similar loss is predicted for 2017. The restructuring plan envisaged a return to profitability by 2019 and a subsequent expansion of long-haul operations. The failure to turn Alitalia around is a setback for Etihad, which announced heavy losses of its own at the end of last year and then revealed in January that Hogan would leave the company later this year. The Abu Dhabi-based company acquired its stake when it saved Alitalia from bankruptcy in 2014 with a pledge to trim costs while improving service standards and capitalising on the brands association with Italian luxury and style.Hogan said significant improvements had been delivered. However, new marketplace challenges, including greater low cost carrier competition and the impacts of terrorist events on tourism demand, meant further, deeper change was required, he said.
