Yasir six-for puts Pakistan in command against West Indies

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Yasir Shahs stranglehold of the West Indies continued on the fourth day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday as the leg-spinner snared six for 90 to re-open the prospect of a first-ever Test match victory at the venue for Pakistan going into the final day.Despite a patient, disciplined Test best of 90 from Shai Hope and a succession of half-century partnerships that raised expectations of the home side batting their way to safety, West Indies slipped from the relative comfort of 235 for four to be 264 for nine at stumps. They go into the final day on Thursday ahead by 183 runs with the last pair at the crease. On a deteriorating pitch, Pakistans final target may still be a challenging one as they seek the historic win which would also give them a first-ever Test series triumph in the Caribbean.Man of the Match in the seven-wicket win the first Test in Jamaica, Shah was again the key performer when it mattered most for Pakistan.Hope appeared to have blunted the threat successfully through more than five hours of watchful batsmanship. However within sight of a maiden Test hundred, he drove Shah to cover where Azhar Ali held the catch that triggered the late slide.Having broken an 80-run fifth-wicket partnership with Vishaul Singh, Pakistan were celebrating again off the very next delivery as Singh was on his way back to the pavilion, bowled off the inside edge by seamer Mohammad Abbas for 32.Three wickets fell for one run when Younis Khan held his fifth catch of the match, a brilliant reflex effort at slip to remove West Indies captain Jason Holder off Shah. In his farewell series like captain Misbah ul Haq, Younis is now the only fielder to have taken 50 catches after the age of 35 in Test cricket. Its about staying fit and staying sharp and expectant in the field, the 39-year-old explained. This pitch is pretty much like what we play on at home and in the UAE (United Arab Emirates), so if we play properly and concentrate we should be able to get whatever the target is on the last day.In rampant mood after the late success, Shah then disposed of Shane Dowrich and Alzarri Joseph in quick succession just before the close to leave Devendra Bishoo and last man Shannon Gabriel to carry the fight for the home side into the last day. With more and more questions being asked about his continued presence in the regional side given a paltry average of 15.40 and a topscore of 41 prior to this innings, Hope went a long way in responding to the critics in a situation where the West Indies were always likely to capitulate. He came to the crease in the morning after Pakistan struck an early blow when the West Indies resumed at 40 for one, Mohammad Amir bowling Shimron Hetmyer before the left-hander could add to his overnight score of 22.Kraigg Brathwaite continued to bat resolutely in partnership with Hope, the pair putting on 56 for the third wicket despite the varying challenges posed by the tourists combination of pace and wrist-spin.It was Shah, the more experienced of the specialist slow bowlers, who provided the breakthrough when he removed the obdurate Brathwaite for 43. Fresh from a century in the first innings, Roston Chase proved an able partner to Hope for the rest of the morning and then deep into the afternoon session, their fourth-wicket stand producing 58 invaluable runs when Chase was deceived by a flighted Shah delivery to be caught-and-bowled for 23.

Dollar gains as Fed stays on track for gradual rate hikes

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar gained Wednesday after the Federal Reserve signaled it was on track to gradually lift interest rates, raising expectations it will again act in June. The wording of the Feds policy statement strengthens the prospect of two more increases in the benchmark lending rate this year, boosting the dollar against the euro and other major currencies.Global equity markets were mixed. The Dow finished slightly higher, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both fell modestly. Frankfurt rose modestly, while London and Paris dipped. The Fed gave a generally upbeat outlook on the US economy, saying that some weak data in the first quarter were likely to be transitory and predicting that economic activity would expand at a moderate pace.Several analysts said the statement clears the way for the US central bank to lift rates next month, although that partly depends on US data. A key release comes Friday with issuing of the US jobs report for April.Given the tone of the statement, we believe the bar for inaction in June is high, a note from Barclays said. The committee seems eager to look through any weakness and has, at long last, reached a consensus, in our view, that a gradual pace of rate hikes this year is warranted. The euro was down against the dollar ahead of Sundays second round of Frances presidential election, in which moderate Emmanuel Macron is expected to beat his far-right, anti-EU opponent Marine Le Pen. The two candidates traded insults in a heated TV debate on Wednesday ahead of this weekends runoff.Crude prices remained under pressure after the US government reported a much smaller fall in oil stocks than analysts had expected. In earnings news, Apple shed 0.3 percent after reporting a 4.9 percent rise in second-quarter profit to $11 billion. But iPhone sales came in slightly lower than in the year-ago period.Media shares fell sharply following results from Time Warner that were generally strong, but included disappointing advertising revenue at its Turner broadcasting division. Analysts worry that the growth of streaming services is hitting broadcasting profits.Disney lost 2.4 percent, Twenty-First Century Fox, 5.1 percent and Viacom, 7.3 percent. All three will report earnings in the coming days.French oil giant Total meanwhile lost the top market capitalization spot in the Paris CAC 40 index on Wednesday, making way for the luxury behemoth LVMH.

Stubborn Hope helps West Indies increase lead

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Shai Hope anchored the West Indies second innings resistance with a patient, unbeaten 68 in lifting the home side to 197 for four - a lead of 116 runs - at tea on the fourth day of the second Test against Pakistan at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Wednesday.Belying a mediocre record in eight previous matches, Hope battled with admirable patience, discipline and skill for almost four hours in negotiating the threat of the tourists bowlers, especially leg-spinner Yasir Shah exploiting the variable bounce and sharp turn of a deteriorating pitch. He resumes in the final session with Vishaul Singh (18 not out), the left-hander also under considerable scrutiny after three previous failures since his debut in the first Test of the series in Jamaica. With more and more questions being asked about his continued presence in the regional side given a paltry average of 15.40 and a topscore of 41 prior to this innings, Hope went a long way in responding to the critics in a situation where the West Indies were always likely to capitulate. He came to the crease after Pakistan struck an early blow when the West Indies resumed at 40 for one, Mohammad Amir bowling Shimron Hetmyer before the left-hander could add to his overnight score of 22.Kraigg Brathwaite continued to bat resolutely in partnership with Hope, the pair putting on 56 for the third wicket despite the varying challenges posed by the tourists combination of pace and wrist-spin.It was Shah, the more experienced of the specialist slow bowlers, who provided the breakthrough when he removed the obdurate Brathwaite for 43.Bowling round the wicket and seeking to exploit the rough areas outside the right-handers leg-stump, Shah managed to get a delivery to bounce and turn sharply to take the shoulder of the bat for Younis Khan to pull in his fourth catch of the match diving to his right at slip.Fresh from a century in the first innings, Roston Chase proved an able partner to Hope for the rest of the morning and then deep into the afternoon session, their fourth-wicket stand producing 58 invaluable runs when Chase was deceived by a flighted Shah delivery to be caught-and-bowled for 23.Pakistan are yet to win a Test match at Kensington Oval in six previous attempts dating back to 1958 and victory here will also earn them a Test series triumph in the Caribbean for the first time ever ahead of the final Test in Dominica in a weeks time.
