Football: Rashford edges Man Utd towards Europa League final

Posted:

VIGO (AFP) - Marcus Rashfords stunning free-kick 23 minutes from time put Manchester United on the brink of reaching the Europa League final with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Celta Vigo on Thursday.Celta goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez kept the Spaniards in the tie before half-time with a string of saves to deny Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jese Lingard. However, he was wrong-footed by Rashfords free-kick as United took a giant step towards reaching the final in Stockholm on May 24.And United manager Jose Mourinho hailed his wonder kid who has stepped up in the absence of top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic due to cruciate ligament damage.Hes a 19-year-old kid in love with football, said Mourinho. He works, hes mature and what matters is not his age but his quality.Rashfords 11th goal of the season was just reward for Uniteds superiority as they close in on not just the prestige of winning the Europa League for the first time, but also the prize of guaranteed Champions League football next season it would bring. In the first-half Sergio had a couple of very important saves and the way we started the game and controled the game in the first half I think we deserved a better result, added Mourinho. But the opponent was difficult, the stadium was difficult, so I cannot be happier with the players and their work.Celta, by contrast, failed to rise to the challenge of their first ever European semi-final, but they did have the first big chance just 10 minutes in.Nemanja Radojas cross picked out the unmarked Daniel Wass, but the Dane miscued his header horribly wide with just Sergio Romero to beat.Thereafter, it fell on Alvarez to keep Celta in the tie.And he refused to give up hope of making the final.Nothing is impossible, said Alvarez. We have to recover as soon as possible and go there to show we are a brave team. His best stop came on 21 minutes when Rashford took aim from just outside the box and his shot was curling into the top corner only for Alvarezs fingertips to turn the ball behind.Paul Pogba was making his return after missing Uniteds last two outings, and the worlds most expensive player looked a class apart in midfield.A powerful run from the Frenchman teed up Mkhitaryan for the visitors best chance of the first 45 minutes. However, Alvarez rushed from his line to block from the Armenian. And Alvarez was called into action again moments later to parry Lingards imprecise shot after he had been played in by Rashfords through ball.Celtas top scorer Iago Aspas was anonymous before the break, but started the second-half brightly and saw flicked header float just wide.Pione Sisto was then denied by a fine save from Sergio Romero as the Danes deflected shot threatened to loop over the Argentine.Celtas greater attacking intent was offering United more space on the counter-attack and Rashford didnt make the most of one promising opening after skipping past Gustavo Cabral. However, the 19-year-old showed his class moments later as he won a free-kick on the edge of the area and then picked himself up to curl home a wonderful effort into the far corner.Aspas had Celtas best chance to respond but fired wide when Jonnys cross was fired into him at an awkward height.Celta have already overcome losing the first leg 1-0 at home on their run to the last four with a 2-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk in the last 32.But the Galicians need lightning to strike twice at Old Trafford on May 11 as United look set for their first European final since 2011.

Spanish court orders Barca's Neymar to stand trial for fraud

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - A Spanish court on Thursday ordered Barcelonas Brazilian star Neymar and his parents to stand trial over alleged fraud and corruption in the players transfer from Santos in 2013.The National Court also ordered Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell, as well as the two clubs, Barcelona and Brazils Santos, to be sent to trial over the affair. They will stand trial for business corruption and fraud, the court said in a statement.Neymars arrival from Brazils Santos has been a huge success for the Spanish champions on the pitch but a judicial nightmare off it.The 25-year-old striker is being investigated in Brazil and Spain over his headline move to La Liga.Barcelona originally published the transfer figure as 57.1 million euros ($62.3 million), with 40 million euros of that given to the players family. But Spanish authorities believe the true transfer figure was at least 83 million euros. In November, prosecutors recommended that the striker be handed a two-year jail sentence and a fine of 10 million euros for alleged corrupt practices.Sentences of two years or less are habitually suspended for first time offenders in Spain. The case initiated with a complaint from Brazilian investment company DIS, which owned 40 percent of Neymars sporting rights at the time of his transfer.DIS received just 6.8 million euros -- 40 percent of the fee paid to Santos -- with the company claiming it was cheated out of its real share because part of the transfer fee was concealed by Barcelona, Santos and the Neymar family.

Golf: Ko wins opener in LPGA's Ochoa Match Play

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - World number one Lydia Ko beat hometown favorite Ana Menendez 3 & 2 on Thursday to launch her campaign at the LPGA Lorena Ochoa Match Play, where Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn set up a second-round sister duel.New Zealands Ko, who was forced out of last weeks Texas Shootout with an eye infection, was the first winner of the day in the tournament that switched this year from its former stroke play format. She seized the lead with a birdie at the par-five second, and was able to take advantage of some miscues by Menendez -- who won two holes with birdies but never got ahead.Ko won the 14th with a par to go 3-up and sealed the win when they halved the 16th with birdies.Hopefully, that last birdie is good momentum going into tomorrow, Ko said. Playing with a hometown girl you know one of the favorites I knew that it was going to be a tight one and it was fun.Match play is definitely a different game to stroke play, she added. I enjoyed it, but you just never know.Ariya Jutanugarn, the top seed in her bracket, advanced with a 5 & 4 win over Amy Anderson while eighth-seeded Moriya beat Alana Sharp 2 & 1.We talked about (playing each other) after we saw the pairing, Ariya said. We said we are lucky we hadnt booked a flight yet. We never know who is going to go back early so we are happy about that. The Thai sisters were paired together in the final round of the Texas Shootout, but Ariya said they had faced each other in match play only once, in an amateur event in Canada. We always try to be ourselves so shes probably going to say that shes going to go out there and play her best, so I say Im going to play my best, Moriya said.Belgiums Laura Gonzalez Escallon, the 16th seed in her bracket, notched the biggest upset of the day -- a 2 & 1 victory over two-time major champion Chun In-Gee of South Korea.Gonzalez Escallon won four holes with birdies, including the winning putt on the 17th.I am excited with this win -- the odds were completely against me, said the Belgian, who played university golf in the United States and graduated to the LPGA tour from Symetra Tour.Englands Charley Hull overcame a fainting spell and a two-hour delay because of lightning to post a gritty 2 & 1 victory over American Nelly Korda.I felt really faint on the 12th fairway and I just kind of collapsed... I kept seeing flashing lights and thats when the medics came out, Hull said.I was a bit low on blood sugar so they gave me some Pepsi and a syrup with lots of sugar in it. I started feeling a little bit better but I still felt sick.

Basketball body lifts 'hijab ban' during games

Posted:

HONG KONG (AFP) - Basketball chiefs reversed a controversial ban on professional players wearing headgear Thursday after fierce criticism that the rule undermined diversity by disallowing religious coverings like the Muslim hijab. The decision by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) means religious headwear can now be worn on court. The new rule comes as a result of the fact that traditional dress codes in some countries, which called for the head and/or entire body being covered, were incompatible with FIBAs previous headgear rule, it said in a statement.A furious Qatar withdrew their womens basketball team from the Asian Games in 2014 because FIBA said they were not allowed to wear headscarves on safety grounds, calling the ban an insult. Many sports, including football, now allow women to wear the hijab. In the same year, FIBA also ran into trouble when Sikh players from India were forced to remove their turbans at the Asia Cup in China and had to tie their hair with elastic bands. The new guidelines, which will take effect in October, stipulate that headwear must not cover any part of the face, including eyes, nose and lips.It must also be black or white, or the same dominant color as the uniform, and not be dangerous to players. The decision comes at the end of a two-year testing period in a process that worked toward relaxing the previous restrictions.

West Indies stun Pakistan to win 2nd Test

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Shannon Gabriel produced an outstanding effort of consistently fast bowling to lead the West Indies to a 106-run victory over Pakistan 80 minutes after lunch on the final day of the second Test at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday.Set a target of 188 after leg-spinner Yasir Shahs seven for 94 wrapped up the home sides second innings at 268 at the start of the day, the tourists were never in contention after the pace barrage on a deteriorating pitch led by Gabriel, whose innings figures of five for 11 contributed to Pakistans demise for just 81 off 34.4 overs. It equalled the lowest total ever in a Test innings at the venue set by India, also in a losing effort chasing 120, against the West Indies in 1997 and leaves the series at 1-1 going into the final Test in Dominica starting next Wednesday.Troubled by injuries and no-balls throughout his comparatively brief career, the burly fast bowler earned the Man of the Match award with overall figures of nine for 92, the third-best by a West Indian against Pakistan.Only wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed and fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who contributed 23 each, offered any resistance to Gabriel, Alzarri Joseph (two for 42) and Jason Holder (three for 23), the West Indies captain having the satisfaction of taking the final wicket when Ahmed was caught by Roston Chase on the long-on boundary to trigger the Caribbean sides celebrations. We knew we had a chance once we got a lead over 150, said Gabriel as he savoured the success.I just concentrated on bowling the right areas at pace and everything worked out for me and the team. This was a total team effort.Gabriel started the rout with the wicket of first innings century-maker Azhar Ali as the opening batsman miscued an attempted pull for Shimron Hetmyer to take a diving catch at midwicket.Joseph, sharing the new ball with Gabriel, struck in the very next over when Babar Azam flicked at a leg-side delivery for wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich to snare the chance and consign Pakistans brightest batting talent to the indignity of a pair.Joseph should have also accounted for Ahmed Shehzad but the opening batsman, who enjoyed generous slices of luck in scoring 70 in the first innings, was missed at first slip edging an attempted drive. That disappointment was replaced by even more jubilation in the West Indies camp though, as Holder replaced Gabriel and immediately earned the prized scalp of Younis Khan. Adjudged LBW by on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough, Younis challenged the decision only to have it confirmed by the television replays. With Joseph tiring, Gabriel was recalled into action to replace the gangling Antiguan and the burly Trinidad and Tobago tearaway responded with two critical wickets in the space of three deliveries.Captain Misbah ul Haq was first ruled not out to vociferous appeals but replays following a challenge showed an inside-edge that lobbed to Shai Hope at gully and sent the Pakistan captain back to the pavilion without scoring. He was joined just a few minutes later by Asad Shafiq when the new batsman edged his second delivery for Powell to take the catch at first slip at the third attempt.West Indies deserve all the credit for the way their bowlers performed today but I felt we let the match get away from us by letting them get so many runs in the second innings, said Misbah. Our intention was to bat normally and put away the scoring opportunities but they never really came early enough for us to get going.Pakistan were in danger of their lowest-ever total when Shehzad and Shadab Khan fell shortly after lunch at 36 for seven. However Ahmed and Amir took them past the ignominious low of 49 in a 42-run stand that only delayed the inevitable.Gabriel was brought back into the attack to the break the partnership with the wicket of Amir and completed a five-wicket innings haul when he bowled Shah for the fourth duck of the innings. It was then left to Holder to finish off the match with the wicket of Ahmed even if it meant denying Gabriel a first ten-wicket match haul in Test cricket.

Morgan promises no let-up against Ireland

Posted:

BRISTOL (AFP) - England one-day captain Eoin Morgan has insisted the absence of three first-choice players due to Indian Premier League duty is not a sign they are taking this weeks matches against Ireland less than seriously.Dublin-born Morgan is set to captain against his native country in a two-match series, with Fridays fixture in Bristol and Sundays clash at Lords the first occasions Ireland have played England in England. For England, the matches mark the start of their build-up to next months Champions Trophy on home soil, with Morgan eager to lead his adopted country to their first global 50-over title. Its something with huge potential and which weve been building towards for 18 months now, Morgan told reporters in Bristol on Thursday.Weve marked it as the halfway stage to the 2019 World Cup ... were not taking this game for granted. The strength of the side were putting out reflects that, and its a really important summer for us -- so were taking it as seriously as any other fixture.England, however, will be without all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, as well as wicket-keeper Jos Buttler, because of the trios IPL commitments.By contrast, Morgan has interrupted his IPL stint. But with Stokes making a maiden Twenty20 hundred in the franchise competition on Sunday, Morgan was in no doubt the trio would gain more from playing in the IPL at this time than coming back to face Ireland.Yes, I think they will, he said. Thats the emphasis behind the decision.I think its the right decision, part of our development as a side to get as many players (as possible) playing in the biggest and best tournaments in the world -- albeit T20.This year weve had more players at the Big Bash, seven, and eight players at the IPL -- which shows a lot of strength. To rub shoulders with some of the biggest and best names in the world and put in performances like Ben Stokes did the other night bodes well for our future development.Morgan made his international reputation with Ireland before switching to England aged 22 in 2009.But even if Ireland are granted their longed-for Test status next month, Morgan said there was no chance of him switching back..No, thats very cheeky, he said.No chance, no chance.

Billings happy with England glove story

Posted:

BRISTOL (AFP) - Sam Billings will hope an off-season of globetrotting round the worlds top Twenty20 leagues pays dividends when he plays for England against Ireland in this weeks two-match one-day international series against Ireland.Billings will be deployed as a wicket-keeper by England even though Test gloveman Jonny Bairstow is in their squad for the Ireland matches, which start with Fridays clash in Bristol. It will be the first time Billings has been behind the stumps for eight months but the 25-year-old is confident he can pick up where he left off with county side Kent.Billings and England one-day captain Eoin Morgan have both returned from stints in the Indian Premier League while the likes of the teams regular one-day keeper Jos Buttler and all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have remained with their franchises. However, the absent trio will all be back for Englands tilt at the Champions Trophy on home soil next month.England have never won a major global 50-over trophy but Billings said what he had heard of the field in between some useful contributions for the Delhi Daredevils suggested the rest of the world now regarded them as a major threat following a shambolic showing at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.Previously in this country, we havent made one-day cricket a priority as such -- but now people are petrified of our side, and you only find that out by talking to them, Billings told reporters in Bristol on Thursday.Theres a buzz around the reputation of the England team in white-ball cricket -- its amazing to think about that transition from two years ago.Stokes gets a hundred, three man-of-the-match awards -- everyone knows what he can do -- and then theres Woakes, Buttler. Its kind of gone full circle -- people now thinking they have a seriously good squad. The competition for (England) places is phenomenal.Billings meanwhile is in no doubt he has become a better player as a result of his limited overs travels. Its been a fantastic opportunity to play in probably the best league in the world in terms of a franchise tournament -- its high intensity every game. From the Big Bash (in Australia), to (Englands limited-overs series in) India, to the Pakistan Super League and the IPL -- so it has been a lot of cricket. But no doubt my game has moved forward.Billings, however, has been deployed as a specialist batsman in all of those tournaments.I think the last time I kept wicket in a game was September for Kent (against Essex in the County Championship), so its been while. But Im looking forward to the challenge, and Ive also got the added benefit that Ive kept since the age of 10 -- Im a natural wicketkeeper as such.I have the years banked with the wicket-keeping and I hope its like a duck to water.Ive been practising.Dublin-born Morgan for one had no qualms about handing Billings the gloves for both Fridays match and Sundays clash at Lords. These two games are an opportunity to have a look at Sam, in a very similar position to where Jos would play, and hes more than capable of filling that position, said the captain.Turning to Bairstows reaction, Morgan said: He understands the position hes in.Its completely different to his Test position, where hes the number one wicket-keeper.The dynamics of our one-day team are always changing, and might need to change in the lead-up to the World Cup -- so having an understanding and acceptance of it is part of the game.

South African Ingram extends contract with Glamorgan

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former South African international batsman Colin Ingram committed himself to a further two years with English county side Glamorgan on Thursday. The 31-year-old -- who played the last of his 31 one-day Internationals for the Proteas in 2013 -- will play all formats this season but restrict himself to the limited overs competitions next term.Ingram, who also played Twenty20 cricket for his country, has been a success at the county -- scoring 1,712 runs across all formats in his first campaign. However, a knee injury last season prevented him playing in the County Championship but he starred for them in the limited overs competitions.I am delighted to commit to Glamorgan, said Ingram, who recorded three centuries in One Day Internationals for the Proteas. After being sidelined by injury from first-class cricket last year Ill be focusing more on the white-ball game from next season. However Im intent on playing for Glamorgan across all formats for the rest of this season and will do everything I can to ensure we enjoy a successful year.

French court rejects neutral gender on official documents

Posted:

PARIS: (AFP) - Intersex people born in France cannot hold official documents identifying them as gender neutral, the countrys highest appeals court ruled Thursday. In its ruling against the case of a 65-year-old psychotherapist who uses the pseudonym Gaetan, the court said French law does not allow judges to recognise a neutral sex.Intersex people have characteristics such as chromosomes or sexual organs that dont clearly fit the typical definitions of male or female.Gaetan sought to change official documents listing them as male to instead give a neutral gender.Gaetan is neither a man nor a woman. They do not feel like a man or woman. They cannot become a man or a woman. And they do not want to become a man or woman, said Gaetans lawyer Bertrand Perier.Any judicial recognition of a sex outside the categories of male or female would have profound repercussions on rules of French law, necessitating a slew of legislative changes, the court said. The case of Gaetan, who lives in eastern France and is married to a woman, wound through regional courts before landing in the imposing Cour de Cassation on the River Seine in central Paris. Two years ago, a family affairs judge in Gaetans birthplace of Tours ruled in the psychotherapists favour. The following year, however, an appeals court rejected the ruling, saying it feared the simple adjustment of a document risked officially recognising an entirely different gender category.I do not belongWhen I look at myself naked in the mirror, morning or night, I can see I do not belong to a mans world or a womans world, Gaetan told AFP at the court before the proceedings. The court Thursday said the plaintiff has, in the eyes of outsiders, the appearance and social behaviour of someone of the male sex.According to the United Nations, between 0.05 and 1.7 percent of the global population is intersex -- about the same percent that have red hair.Sometimes this is apparent at birth, while at other times it becomes noticeable at puberty. Those linked to chromosomes may not be physically evident.Belgian runway model Hanne Gaby Odiele significantly raised awareness of neutral gender issues earlier this year by publicly revealing that she is intersex.New York -- Americas largest and one of its most liberal cities -- last year issued the first US birth certificate marked intersex.
